The only reason there's a star on this review is that my hair turned out great. The stress and insanity it took to get there, though, was just too much.
I came to Delray for a friend's wedding and, having hair that immediately frizzes up in the face of any humidity, I asked said friend for a recommendation on a good place to get a nice blowout near the wedding. Nothing fancy/complicated, just a blowout. She recommended Glavidia - and was even using her to prepare for her wedding. Great!
My friend and I made an appointment for 2pm - they said it was all that was available the day of the wedding. Totally fine - we figured that'd give us plenty of time to go check into our hotel/change/put makeup on before the 7pm wedding. At the time of making the appointment, I asked if I could get my side bangs trimmed in addition to getting my blowout - what I thought was a very simple request. I was told that I would have to wait for Glavidia to get back to the salon from getting the bride ready to do that herself. Okay...
We arrived at 1:50pm and were told that there'd be a bit of a wait - that we could go get coffee or lunch (...before going to a wedding?). Neither of us were in chairs having anything done until close to 3pm. Neither stylist asked us for reference on what we wanted and immediately began putting both of us into super tight curls - we were told that Glavidia would do the finishing touches on us once she was there and that they were just prepping us.
We then sat in the salon for TWO AND A HALF HOURS in tight, tight pincurls and bobbypins while being told Glavidia would be there soon, that she just left, that it wouldn't be long. While being told this though, they also said, "Well, you could go across the street and get a drink - so you're not playing catch-up when you get to the wedding."
...what? We're going to drink beer from the convenience store next to the salon before the wedding we both flew from Manhattan to attend? Were they implying we'd be late? What kind of suggestion is that?
Thankfully we had our bags with us - as we still had not checked into the hotel, which we had told the salon - so we ended up having to do our makeup for the wedding there while waiting for Glavidia. During this entire time, we were offered coffee and water exactly once. I got my coffee. My friend never got her water.
When Glavidia finally showed up at 5:30, she did our hair very well - but because she's only one person, it had to be one at a time. The only thing I was disappointed in was that she took exactly one pass at my bangs without checking to see if they were even or as short as I wanted - you know, the bang-cutting that was such a big deal when I initially scheduled the appointment. I had to have them fixed by a salon at home.
We were made fun of by the salon employees for being stressed out about the timing(!!!) - but we didn't get out of the salon until 6:15 to drive to the hotel, check in, and change into our dresses. We barely made it to the wedding.
After this entire saga, we were charged $80 each for full updos, even though neither of us had that or requested it. From their website, I had figured a $40 blowout and $10 curls would net me out at $50. But because they didn't listen to us at the outset, they charged us that much - and, not to mention, we had sat in the salon for nearly FIVE HOURS WITHOUT APOLOGY. We didn't have time to argue. We basically had to throw down our credit cards and run as fast as we could to the wedding.
I've never seen such poor planning in my life. I would think one of the most basic parts of running and operating a hair salon would be scheduling appointments and making sure you have the staff to properly attend to those appointments.
Glavidia is skilled at what she does, and if you have the time to wait five hours to complete a blowout, I guess this is the place for you. read more
