So I grimaced and groused the whole way to Carrboro about having to go to this restaurant, which I had given two chances before to impress me, and been disappointed on both occasions. In the last two years, I'm not sure whether they've acquired a new chef -- or just a whole new attitude -- but I was pleasantly surprised with my menu exploration this evening. Things certainly started off well when we were told about the 1/2-price bottles of wine on Tuesday. We selected a Malbec and put our food orders in. A plate of thinly sliced airy bread was brought out with a side dish of peppery olive oil. And then our first courses. For me, a savory tart of creamy mushrooms, spinach, and thin slivers of cheese. It blended perfectly and just melted in my mouth! My main course was the lobster rolls (3): a lobster salad atop house-made rolls. The rolls were small (as expected at a tapas restaurant), but the lobster salad heaped on top was fairly generous, and the lobster not stingy. I also ordered the house-cut fries for the table -- they were plenty enough to share and were deliciously seasoned. I was catching up with some old colleagues of mine, and had a dinner that lasted 3 hours. During this time, the waiter did not once make us feel rushed -- he even let our paid checks sit on the table until after we'd left. Nor did the waitress skip refilling our waters; she continued to stop by the table and make sure we were topped off. That's an A+ for service, and notably improved marks for food as well! It gets my stamp of approval... I guess third time's a charm. read more

I went in to GlassHalFull expecting a run-of-the-mill, pretentious wine bar with a modest food menu, but instead was introduced to one of the best restaurants in the Chapel Hill / Carrboro area. We chose the cheapest red on the menu (Bodega Catena Zapata malbec, $28.99) because if a restaurant can find a good cheap wine, then they probably know their stuff. And luckily they know their stuff. The atmosphere was light, open, dress-casual, and could be a great place to take a business client. Unfortunately our waiter left a lot to be desired-- he knew nothing about wine, very little about the food menu, was super slow, and seemed nervous; I can only assume it was his first day on the job. But lucky for him, the sommelier was very knowledgeable and friendly, and it more than made up for our waiter's downfalls. Last but not least, the food was amazing. Yes, the salmon dish was served on a small plate and still cost $14, but this is one of those restaurants that doesn't try to gorge its patrons on too much food-- they understand that quality outweighs quantity, and the quality at GlassHalFull is remarkable. We ordered a side dish of brussel sprouts that were parboiled, then sauteed with sliced apples and a syrup/sherry concoction, and it was honestly one of the best sides I've ever had, and definitely the best brussel sprouts I've ever eaten. read more

I went here a while ago with a friend- the food was decent and the prices were a little high for me. But what really disappointed me was that they serve foie gras. As the ASPCA notes on foie gras: "The birds' livers become so enlarged...that according to documentation by veterinarians, the animals must experience unspeakable pain and suffering. Birds have literally exploded from these forced feedings." I could give many, many more examples of the truly horrific things unearthed about this industry, but I will leave it at that. I wish Glasshalfull would remove this item from the menu. It's hard to have a meal at a place with this product on the menu. I won't return to this restaurant and will steer my friends and family to other great Carrboro restaurants so long as they have that item on the menu. read more

I've never been treated with such rudeness, distain and utter lack of kindness as on my visit to Glasshalfull on June 22. I'd made a reservation on Resy for my daughter and me for 5:15pm. When I arrived I was the only person in the restaurant except for two women in a booth. I stood and waited several minutes for the hostess to appear and she then led me to a small table along a banquet lined with many other empty tables. Wanting some coziness and privacy I asked if we could please have one of the many empty booths. She refused stating that they were for larger parties or had been requested. Well, I was requesting, and since there were at least 20+ empty tables I thought it was a reasonable request. She again refused. When I politely asked again she went to get her manager, who looked around at the empty restaurant and unkindly said NO I could not have a booth. At that point my daughter arrived, and she and I agreed that we did not want to be treated as though they did not want our business, so we left. We drove up the street to Venable Restaurant, were greeted kindly and with a smile, and though there were other diners there and we had no reservation, we were seated at a nice table (for four), and then enjoyed an excellent dinner with smiling and thoughtful service. As a longtime resident of the Carrboro area I will never go back to Glasshalfull. The previous owners would never had treated a customer in the way my daughter and I were. I'll also advise anyone I know to not give them any business. read more

Definitely on the list to go again! Loved the lightening/mood and overall design of the restaurant. Food is absolutely wonderful. I was there with a group of 9 people and got to try a various dishes. I personally got the Chicken and Lamb liver pâté. It was wonderful. Although it was a small dish, the spread was more than enough for the bread it came with. The waitress brought more bread after I finished my first bowl. Definitely a place to go with a group of people if you want to try bits and pieces of the small dishes. GlassHalFull is one of my favorite date night or girls night spots in Carrboro, NC. The atmosphere is always fun and flirty, and the outside area is lovely in the spring/summer. I went here tonight with one of my best girlfriends, and we shared many glasses of wine and a ton of tapas. We had the cheese plate (get it) with perfect pairings of fig jam, perfectly roasted cranberries, and quince paste. Then we shared brussel sprouts caramelized to goodness. Followed by a potato and leek soup and a nice red snapper with papaya and yummy spicy salsa. Expect to pay more than you would at most tapas places - both for service/atmosphere and the good food. It's worth it for a nice night out in this area. Love this place for a fun girls gathering or a steamy date night. You can also buy a bottle of wine (classy) to go from the wine shop that's part of the restaurant. So I've dine at Glasshalffull for dinner, lunch and drinks and appetizers and each time has been phenomenal! The food has always been fresh, unique and delicious. The last time I dined here for lunch I had a potato latke "sandwich" which was so delicious and refreshing since their lunch menu is similar to their dinner menu and I was hoping to try something a bit different. I have also tried the mini lobster rolls, brussels sprouts, and charcuterie plate and loved these as well! Although I did want to make a quick note that the first time I had the brussels sprouts it was wonderful yet the second time around they were a bit more greasy. I'm just hoping that this was a fluke since everything else has been so delicious. But what sets Glasshalffull apart from other places is the quality of customer service, which has always been great each and every time I've visited. Additionally, they have a wine shop located inside where patrons can purchase a bottle of wine and have it with their meal at the additional cost of a cork fee (I believe it is either $8 or $10). I haven't done this yet but have ordered off their wine list which I find to be a pretty diverse selection. But if you don't agree with me, luckily they have a larger selection to choose from in their wine shop/retail store! They also serve craft beers on tap and I've seen that they have advertised their mojitos on the drink list, I'll investigate this later! The atmosphere here is very laid back, with lots of light and space. I've enjoyed meals both inside and outside and as the summer weather is making its way back to Carrboro, I highly recommend their outdoor patio! Nothing beats enjoying the warm weather with delicious foods and a nice bottle of wine! The only drawback to Glasshalffull is that their prices are a bit steep compared to similar restaurants, however their customer service, tapas-style plates, variety of fresh and local foods as well as the option of their wines in their retail shop make it worth it in my opinion. read more

We made reservations ahead, it was a special occasion with a long time friend. PERFECT CHOICE. We were all delighted not only by our initial greeting but the server's excellence and the delicious meal that followed. We had had the chicken/duck liver pate long ago and its flavor consistent with our memory. (Covid really clipped our restaurant outings). The hanger steak was tasty, tender and complimented by a simple salad. It appealed to all of us even though I rarely eat red meat. And then, desserts! Perfect size...satisfying but not overwhelming and delicious so that we want to go back again to savor each AGAIN. They were Chocolate Buddino, Buttermilk Orange cake, Brownie with coconut ice cream. As mentioned, portions were just right, not overwhelming as are some at other restaurants. Ambiance is vibrant and on this Monday night, certainly not what I would call "intimate." Not to worry, we were celebrating a long time friendship and shared a fine wine through our meal that had been recommended by our knowledgeable server. This is a happy memory for sure. read more

So, I wasnt surprised about the size of the entrees nor the price. I got the veggie lasagna which was quite tasty. It had a unique mix of beets and kale. It was much better than the many lasagnas you generally get but I felt it could have been slightly spicier or even had some additional herbs. As an appetizer, I ordered the fried brussel sprouts which were quite tasty and had lemony tangy flavor to them. They tasted great at the restaurant but unfortunately there were considerable side effects afterwards. Maybe, I just have an averse reaction to brussel sprouts; im not sure. This place is pretty good, but I definitely had high expectations for the food after viewing the menu online, and it passed with a solid B- We started with the cheese and charcuterie plate, which was delicious, but it's hard to go wrong with those. The Coca Flatbread was decent, but not drool-worthy. I got the Lobster Rolls which were pretty good. I loved the actual roll it was in, but overall it was pretty dry and could be elevated with simply a nice wash of melted butter on the inside of the roll. Both these dishes were served luke-warm and quickly got cold. Overall, I wanted these dishes to deliver more than they did. We were hit was crispy, delicious flavors, sweet figs, salty shallots and mushrooms, spicy arugula and garlic, which all came together in this perfect elegance! it was an A+. 2. The Beet and Kale Lasagna - I give it an A. It was unique, very tasty, cooked perfectly, nice textures and all the flavors of an "A"-dish. 3. The Mahi (Dolphin/Dolphinfish - Coryphaena hippurus) special of the day, was overcooked and under seasoned. I felt bad that a nice piece of fish was treated that way :( It'd give the fish a D-, however... I would give the vegetables that came along with it a solid B+.. quite tasty and yummy! So, overall, the vegetables were not quite enough to save the dish... it was, unfortunately a C or C-. The prices seemed fair, maybe a touch over-priced. Nothing to write home about though. I really enjoy a good wine bar, one with a casual but memorable feel. Too often they tend towards pricy tapas and Prix fixe, reserved only for the greatest occasions. Glasshalffull charges typical prices for wines by the bottle or glass. Entrees can be steeply priced for the portion, vegetables and grains being more accurate than meat and seafood. That said the food quality is superb. I tried the duck conditions, skin crisped to perfection and with sour sweet pickled onions over bitter raddichio it was evenly balanced. The portion was good but certainly small. The crab Mac and cheese I'm told is outstanding, I haven't had the pleasure myself. Service was good if abrupt. It's definitely a glass half full experience. My personal gem. I love this place. To be honest I've only been for lunch. However, it's great. It's basically a menu of small plates with diverse and upscale tastes and a very reasonable price. Loved the goat cheese caramelized onion bread pudding with shiitake mushrooms. Also lobster rolls are great, full of chunky lobster meat and virtually no filler. Super yum. We were a fairly large table and even though it was a later 7 PM on a Saturday, the place was packed for the two hours we were there. The menu has a tapas feel, but it still worked well even when we all ordered our own entrees. I got the duck confit which was absolutely perfect. The skin was perfectly crispy and the meat was moist and delicious. The sweet potato purée worked so well with the red cabbage and duck that I wanted a second plate! The flavors are subtle yet vibrant and combine in some ways that I've never seen before. And at only $4 per bite! The wines are likewise decent, though the selection isn't what I'd normally like to see from a wine bar. This is my third visit over the past couple months. Date night, business lunch, and birthday celebration were the occasions. Very consistent with food quality and service on all three visits. I really enjoy the atmosphere and seating options inside and outside. The menu selections are good, and the specials like the top rib-eye steak special always make it tough to decide what to order. We also really enjoy the appetizers; cheese plate, duck and chicken liver pate, and olives are some of our favorites. My wife and I can make a meal on this part of the menu alone. I don't know what to rave about most: the wine, the food, the dessert, or the service! A friend and I wanted a girl's date and we definitely picked the right place! Mondays are half-price wine bottle nights, so we were obviously thrilled! The selection is fantastic, and the staff is very knowledgable. We both stopped reading the menu at the "crab macaroni and cheese," so it's possible there are even more brilliant combinations that we just didn't get to. Portion was light, which was perfect for such a rich dish, and delicious! And then we tried the bread pudding. I've honestly never felt such an attraction to...anything. It was amazing! As in, hyphenate my last name with "bread pudding" amazing. Our waitress was wonderful throughout the night. She gave great recommendations about wines and suggested the dessert. I went twice for lunch this month to this place after not having been there in quite a while. I was extremely disappointed! The first time I was by myself and ordered the coca. It was completely covered in at least and each of baby arugula drenched in dressing, once you finally got to the coca it was ok, just ok and much smaller than the coca I had ordered before. The second time, I was with 2 friends and all three of us left hungry. The portions were super small, served in small plates. I have been to most every restaurant in the Chapel Hill / Carrboro area and this is by far my favorite! They have amazing vegetarian options. Highly recommend the pea lasagna, as well as the mushroom risotto (me and a friend each got one and split). Everyone at the table loved their respective appetizers and entrees. I love the ambiance inside as well, kind of an industrial chic vibe that's upscale yet casual enough to still be comfortable. Overall the food is inventive and super high quality, but not in an intimidating or trying to hard way. I will absolutely be returning here! Went out for a fancy but not too fancy dinner. Atmosphere and decor were really nice. Service was fast but not particularly friendly. The menu is great--there's something in there for everyone. Our appetizer, the goat cheese and fig flatbread, might have been our favorite dish of the night. For entrees, we were both deciding between the duck and the lamb, so we ordered one of each and split it. The duck was nice but a little on the bland side...nothing exciting. The lamb, however, was wonderfully juicy and delicious with a bit of heat. Wish there had been a bit more polenta and a little less sauce, or just another piece of bread to sop up the deliciousness. Quality and portions are going down unfortunately. Salad wasn't of the same quality as before. Could have been bag of salad from the grocery store. Ordered swordfish that was very thin and skimpy on a bed of lettuce and mango. Skimpy piece of fish on a HUGE bed of cheap lettuce. They charged $38 for it and I was still very hungry. To cap it off was served cold coffee at the end. We love the atmosphere but the food was not good. The menu needs a facelift. My wife had risotto which was another skimpy portion. I get it restaurants need to recap covid losses but this experience was bad and we won't be coming back. read more

We came here with a large party (20 people) for a celebration on a Friday evening. The ambiance was nice and romantic and they had ample space to host us. The food options on the menu however, was not worth the price in my opinion. Be prepared to pay a good amount for small portions. I ordered the Coca (Spanish flatbread with caramelized onions, goat cheese, figs, shiitake mushrooms, and arugula). It was very tasty and I enjoyed it. I also tried other dishes. The fries were good (how can you go wrong with fries?). The mushroom risotto and the lobster rolls weren't very impressive. I'm usually not a fan of brussel sprouts, but there's were really delicious. As expected, Glasshalfull has an extensive list of options for wine. My friends and I shared a bottle of Chardonnay. However, when the waiter (Kyle) gave us our checks, he charged us for a $50 bottle of wine. According to him, that was what we ordered. As broke graduate students knee-deep in loans and debt, we would not have ordered a bottle that expensive and knew we pointed to a cheaper one on the menu when we gave him our order. We spoke with the manager and he was kind enough to switch the pricing. Another unexpected charge was put on our checks also. Midway through dinner, our waiter asked if anyone ordered a risotto. No one in our party did, so after coming to the conclusion that no one in the restaurant ordered it, he said he was going to give it to us and left it on our table to eat. We all thought that meant it was on the house, but it ended up on our bill. We disputed the charge and he said he would take it off, but ended up swiping our cards with the charge on it and explained that the risotto would be taken off our credit cards at a later time (kind of sketchy). So I'll be keeping my eye out on my credit card statement to make sure it was actually taken off. I probably won't come back for a meal here, but it's a decent place to get together with friends and order drinks. The service was unsatisfactory and the food was good but overpriced. read more

The sliders are good, as are the fries, and they really do have a great way of serving wine. And the location can't be beat. Which is not a big deal to me when a restaurant is crowded and the servers are busy. But when I see a group of servers crowded around near the kitchen talking and restaurant full of empty tables, it becomes a bigger issue to me. The food was nothing impressive. I liked the brussel sprouts. I also go the seared tuna, which was really bland and cooked too well to be that bland, and the mini lobster rolls which were just terrible. The bread was dry, the lobster was dry. Maybe they were trying to something fancy, I don't know, but it wasn't like any lobster roll that I've ever had, or enjoyed, before. And I'd just let it go if the place were cheap, but their menu hits a mid-range price point, so I would have expected better. Wouldn't recommend, wouldn't try again. read more

The burger served at lunchtime is probably the best burger I've ever had. I've moved to Chicago and just tried Kuma's Corner's burgers (nationally recognized as great burgers), but I think Glasshalfull's are better. At Glasshalfull, the burger is not an overwhelming size. It's juicy, gooey, and seasoned well. The fingerling potatoes on the side are good, not great, but they don't taste as heavy/greasy as fries would. We also tried Glasshalfull's 3 course dinner (Monday thru Thursdays 5-6:30pm), which was a good value at $20 per person with a few choices of appetizers, entrees, and desserts. The highlight for me was a chicken skewer I tried as the entree. Chicken doesn't usually "wow" me, but this did. It was juicy and had a great charred flavor with a tasty dip and vegetables with it. I like that they had healthy choices. You may not get huge portions, but the quality is worth the price. I probably would feel it's a bit pricey to order small plates a la carte for dinner and prefer trying the lunch menu and dinner deals instead. Service has always been attentive. With so many disappointments as far as my yelping experience for 2013 so far, I am pleased as pie to give a 5-star rating to Glasshalfull! I absolutely loved this place! A group of us went to Glasshalfull for dinner. We were quickly seated, with our reservation helping us with that, in a neat little tucked away area near the bar. Score- Duke bball was on and I wanted a sneak peak at the game while pretending it wasn't completely bugging me that I was not watching the game back at the hotel. I digress.... Our server (a wonderful gal I share a name with) suggested a few wines and one of my dining companions chose a bottle of the Jean-Louis Poudou carignan "vieilles vignes" Coteaux de Peyriac. Highly recommend!!!! She was very thorough as she went through the menu questions we had and offered suggestions for each pallate. We all ordered several different items, starting with the cheese platter, which included local Hillsborough made cheese. I ordered the mini burgers with aged cheddar, applewood bacon, and truffle aioli...this was of course before I gave up meat recently...but it was very good at the time, and filling! It came with 3 mini burgers and I got through 1.5 of them. I am the girl who would eat cardboard if there were truffle aioli on it! For dessert, we ordered different items to try, including the S'more Terrine, and the Apple Two Ways. Everything was to die for!! The atmosphere is elegant, softly lit, and warm. I've been a few times in the past couple months and I must say I'm kicking myself a bit for not going there sooner. After all, there it is plain as day across from Open-Eye Cafe and Neal's Deli. With its jealously available parking, those big glass windows, and cool outdoor seating. I finally got over myself and have been going there. Went there today for lunch and it was great. I wasn't very hungry since I had eaten at Foster's earlier, but had their beet salad. Damn they put a lot of beets in it. The toasted pistachios were money too. The goat cheese was normal, but I loved the salad. 2 kinds of beets! My wife had the toast sandwich and it seemed small, but was more filling than it appeared. The side of fries was nice too: thin, handcut, fried nicely, good portion size for two. We finished lunch with a shared berry brulee. That was really good. The cream was a yogurt based one, so it was lactose free and rich. I liked that. It had a wonderful almond sugar crust. A little like frosted flakes, but much classier. I'd have that dessert again in a heartbeat. The fresh berries on it were great too. Service was great. Erin was polite and attentive. It's great to have another place to go to in Carrboro. read more

I've been here a few times, and it's middle of the road. First, I must say that a reservation is highly recommended. I have come here once or twice and was met with frustration from the hostess when I would say I didn't have one. Plus, this place gets packed! It's popular with couples who are out on date night. I do like the outdoor patio seating! I have come here with a group and as a duo. Both times, the service was a little lacking. I've sat outdoors and inside, and it didn't seem to change. It was tough to request a water refill. From a food perspective, the menu could use some more variety. There are no main entrees with chicken. The vegetarian mains are lasagna and risotto, two heavy dishes. The fish entrees are heavily shellfish-weighted, so anyone with that allergy may need to take a second glance. On the other hand, the appetizers and other vegetarian dishes are intriguing! On one occasion, I had the dish with scallops, and it was decadent and filling. Also kind of pricey, the dish had a scallop or two that wasn't cleaned properly. On another occasion, I went for wine and dessert. I had the chocolate budino, and man, was the dessert rich! It could have been shared between two people. I have tried different red wines here, but I haven't found one that I like yet. Luckily, the wine offerings come from different geographic regions, so the hunt is not over. Bottom line: I may be back to try some of the appetizers and/or vegetarian options. The food is indulgent, so bring your appetite. Also, make that reservation! read more
