All the appetizers were great... we had them all... but the Brussels sprouts were the best. Now the bad: PLEASE TAJE THAT RUBBERY RIBEYE OFF THE MENU. I realize that these places, Crooks included, feel they HAVE to have a steak for the men folk?!? Try a nice flat iron. And forget the fries?!? I understand it's A Thing.... but is a bad thing. Really, this is a 3.5 rating. This is a charming little restaurant in Carrboro with mostly good food and the service is fine. It could easily be a 5 star place, though, with just a few minor changes. First and foremost (and I hope the management/chef/owner reads this)... they need to change the menu every once in awhile! Sometimes they offer a special and maybe a different fish dish or salad now and then, but they need to offer a lot of new things before we will go back. We have been eating here for nearly two years and I could honestly tell you the entire menu by heart. Many of the dishes are good: the Copa, a flatbread with shiitake mushrooms, Taleggio cheese, figs and arugula, is divine. The mini lobster rolls are delicious and my husband loves the sliders. The tuna is also pretty good- nice and fresh, but the accompanying cauliflower cous cous leaves a bit to be desired - it is just mushy and not very flavorful. And the portion size of the main dishes is quite small for the price. The outside patio is lovely and I recommend trying to be seated there. If there are more than 10 people inside it becomes absolutely impossible to hear. The racket is crazy! A few cloth panels on the ceiling to absorb sound would work wonders... or even just felt or something on the bottom of the chairs. This is one of my favorite places in the Triangle. I love the atmosphere inside and like the little seating area outside. My first trip there we got mini-burgers which were great and the Fritto Misto, which was also delicious. The second time we went we went more in and got the Charcuterie and Cheese to start with and they were awesome. Unfortunately they didn't have the antelope when I was there that time so I got some lamb I think that was awesome (can't find the lamb on their menu right now but I'm pretty sure that's what I had). I have been to Glasshalfull a few times, and went for lunch the other day and sadly have to say, it was not up to par. The first time I went was a few years ago and my husband and I enjoyed their appetizers and a glass of wine. You can't judge a place by this. I subsequently met a friend for lunch about a year later and enjoyed sitting on the outdoor patio and at that time the food we had was quite nice. I recall a very flavorful cauliflower cake on top of a bed of mixed greens. This lunch a couple days ago was pathetic. I ordered a mixed green salad with shrimp and the salad was the tiniest portion, with literally no dressing at all, and was served with a shred of cheese and about 5 grilled shrimp. My friend ordered the mini burger on mixed greens and once again, someone must have been sleeping in the kitchen because her greens were also dry. The shrimp were cooked nicely and had a good flavor but for this plate of food to be $15 was absurd. I never could get the servers attention and we were both hungry enough and in a time crunch. Unfortunately she never come back except to bring us the check. For me, the price did not match the quality and why wouldn't they bother to make a large salad (for pennies extra) and make an effort to add a cherry tomato or something and at least dress the damn thing for that price tag? I was hungry when we left and had to stop and get something else to eat. What a drag. read more

We really wanted to like it here. They have a very gourmet menu but overall it lacked flavor for us tonight. The warm shrimp salad was awesome to split as an appetizer. The local beers were good as well. My husband ordered the bone in pork chop and I ordered the market fish special. Both were just okay and over 20.00 a plate. We finished with their dessert special which had a mild cake served with orange marmalade and fresh fruit. Amazing potential, didn't quite wow us with the flavor. I recently rediscovered Glasshalfull. I had gone several times while in college for special occasions and was under the impression that they were overpriced for what I got. It was good, but not for how much they wanted. I recently decided to give it another go after driving by and seeing their sign about lunch. I was very pleasantly surprised. The lunch specials were all under $10 and you could get a salad for about $4. I ended up getting the sliders and was blown away. They're on par with Al's Burger shack (though obviously smaller). Cooked to perfection and paired with delicous toppings, I had made a great choice. I've been back a few times since then, always for lunch. I'm happy with the variety and the price and plan to go back again. read more

My husband and I came here for drinks and dinner on a whim after hearing about it from friends for the longest time. The food, the wine, the atmosphere, and the service were all excellent. It really is a great spot to relax on a Saturday night. For dinner we shared the chicken and duck liver pate, mini lobster rolls, mini burgers, and crab mac and cheese. Of everything we had the lobster rolls were my favorite--the rolls were warm, soft and buttery and stuffed full of fresh lobster with just enough mayo to bring everything together. The crab mac and cheese was my least favorite. It was tasty and had massive amounts of crab, but it was just not sharp enough for my taste--maybe it needed a little more parmesan. It was the only dish we had that we both agreed we probably wouldn't order again. I did love the little fingerling potato chips on top though--they were a really nice touch. Go ahead and try it yourself; I'm a little bit of a mac and cheese snob :). Anyway, we had a great time and really enjoyed our meal. We'll definitely go back! read more

The fish was succulent and cooked to perfection. The scallops came with a celestial puree of sweet potato and a relish of sweet pecans. Yumiferous! Appetizers: The brussel sprouts and coca are a must; we usually order a few for the table and they're empty by the time we leave. Entrees: Beet and Kale lasanga (5/5): good portion for dinner; this is a dish with tons of flavor. The beet and kale were a tasteful combination and even the meat eaters enjoyed it! Farmers market ratatouille (3/5): kind of bland and I just didn't really like the taste of the dish - it was a marinara sauce base. Dessert: The dessert is always great. Also had the fries. Reallh well seasoned. The portions look pretty small coming out, but I was full by the end. I also had a cocktail (the sidecar) which had good flavor, but I think I'd rather get a beer if I go again because it would be half the price and twice as much to drink. Our service was great. My parents just moved to the Chapel Hill area from Hawai'i so my significant other and I went out there to welcome them to the mainland. After a busy couple of days unpacking boxes and buying warm clothes, we were all ready for a nice dinner. Our meal at Glasshalfull last Wednesday was just what we needed. The atmosphere was comfortable and inviting and the services was spot-on. This is my favorite place in Chapelboro. It has the second best of everything, and I say that in a sincerely positive way. I could go maybe one place better for cocktails, or wine, or food, but I couldn't have the all-around terrific experience I have here literally every single time I come out at any of those places. Unique American dishes served in a beautiful ambiance in Central Carrboro. The item menus are all unique and multiple plates stood out to me. The fries are a must (ask for a side of their aioli sauce, it's served with ketchup originally). As an appetizer, the Coca (Spanish bread topped with figs, goat cheese, and arugula)- a restaurant favorite. If you want something refreshing and light, I'd recommend the beet salad which is served with walnuts and goat cheese. The last fish I tried was the sweet potato lasagna. Everything tasted great; however I must warn you that the portions are pretty small so if you like to eat a lot, order a bigger entree or several small ones. There's a huge bar in the middle of the restaurant and outdoor seating! I love how this space is divided and each table feels like it's own private area because of the dimmed lights, although the space is open. I went there this evening. It is exceptionally delicious. My absolute favorite moment of the evening, was when they brought the succulent portion of Foie Gras. Oh. My. God. Rounded up a couple of girlfriends to check out this wine bar and indulge in their half priced bottles of wine on Monday. They only take reservations for 6 or more people so we had to wait a bit for a table but not bad. Mariah was our server and she did a fantastic job taking care of us even though they were busy. They have a wonderful wine list with many types I've never tried before and since their bottles were half off we ordered a pinot nero to share. A nice bottle of red for $15, YES PLEASE! I spotted Pate on their menu which I don't normally see so we started with that. Good portion for the price and the accruements enhanced the flavor of the Pate nicely (the black cherries were to die for). For dinner I went with the COCA; Crisp Spanish flatbread with caramelized onions, goat cheese, preserved figs, shallot, garlic, shiitake mushrooms, and arugula ($12). To be honest, I wasn't blown away with this dish but it wasn't bad either. Very filling but the bread was a bit soggy. After all was said and done we agreed to return for their wine special and each order the Pate for dinner. read more

Although in general, I'm a fan of GlassHalFull and will continue to eat there, it's a little bit of a mixed bag. It's one of the few places I know of in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area with a good small plates menu, which is a type of restaurant I enjoy, especially when it has a good selection of wine. I love being able to try a couple bites of a bunch of stuff rather than just one entree. It's just that here... it's really expensive to do that. The food itself is really good. I LOVE the Frisee Salad (not as fancy as it sounds), but I also am a big fan of blue cheese and fruity vinaigrettes, and their homemade (I think) cherry vinaigrette is fantastic. The short ribs are also delicious, mostly because of celery root puree (not gross like it sounds like it will be). But the prices add up on you... quickly. The small plates are priced primarily in the $8 - $15 range, and two people can easily split 4 - 5 of these for a full dinner. Add a bottle of wine and you have a $100 meal that you may not have planned after looking at the menu. For example, the delicious short ribs cost $15 and were three two-bite-sized pieces of ribs. The thing is, you could probably eat here on the cheap if you planned it -- some of the salads are pretty significant at only $8ish a piece. Add a side, and you have a filling meal for yourself. But if you're going to experience it the way it should be... it's not gonna be that cheap. The atmosphere leaves me with a similar mixed feeling. Inside, it is beautiful, with a wine-cellar-meets-Carrboro-restaurant-in-an-upscale-but-not-pretentious-way. The bar is open and cool, and the staff is friendly. It has good lighting and big windows. However, GHF suffers from that poor restaurant design thing when they put a bank of small tables along one long booth, with a chair on opposite side, and the tables are so close together, you feel like you're going to be sliding your ass into someone's food if you have to get up to go to the bathroom, and that the people on either side of you can hear your entire conversation. It may be efficient, Clever Restaurant Designer, but it is unpleasant for your customers. There are other tables besides those, but they are metal chairs and tables that don't seem nice enough for a place you're going to drop $50 a person in. Plus, the chairs aren't super comfy, just OK. The service for me was pretty good. Attentive waiter who knew a lot about the food and wine, came back often, and made some good suggestions on what to order, etc. A little pushy on asking us about dessert, then coffee, then after-dinner adult beverage, so it seemed like he was trying to push up the bill, but whatever. Anyway, GlassHalFull seems like it'd be a really fun place to come for Happy Hour to have a glass of wine and share a small plate or two at the bar. I'll come back here for dinner, but I'm sure I'll continue to be grumpy about how close it comes to Awesome... but ultimately settles down into Pretty Good. read more

although the quality of the food is excellent, I was very disappointed in my experience. First of all, they wanted to charge a "plate fee" for us to enjoy birthday cupcakes from home after we had paid a huge amount for food and wine. We ended up going to the Open Eye to enjoy our dessert. Also, my friend called ahead of time to ensure a particular type of wine was available by glass (which is on the menu, by the way). The wait staff told her that it was only available by bottle in their retail section and suggested she could buy a bottle for $30 and pay a corking fee when she only wanted one glass. Why they couldn't open the bottle and pour her a glass I will never know. There are lots of great restaurants in the area. I would rather give my business to a place that cares more about the patrons. Doubt if I will go back. read more

Went here for a birthday dinner because a friend told me to try the lobster rolls! We ended up ordering those, the chilled local yellow tomato soup, the burrata salad, and the NY strip steak. The lobster rolls weren't exactly what I expected, but they weren't bad. It tasted more like tuna salad though than an actual lobster flavor, just in my opinion. I would still recommend trying them though. The yellow tomato soup was a cold soup, and had a nice subtle flavor. However, for the price, they don't give you much soup. It was served in one of those flat soup bowls, and usually, in my experience, the restaurant at least fills it up to the rim of that. Ours was filled up about halfway of that, which doesn't leave you with much soup at all. Flavor was good overall though, just wish we had more of it. On to the salad...no complaints there. Burrata is a softer kind of cheese in the middle of some greens, and it tasted really good! This was my first time eating a burrata salad, though, so I didn't really have any expectations. The NY strip steak was a good-sized portion, but next time, I probably would've tried something a bit more adventurous. The cocktails were also decent - I didn't try the wine, although the selection seemed pretty good. Overall, it was a nice experience, but not somewhere that I'm dying to go back to. However, if you've never been here, I would recommend giving it a shot! read more
