This is one of my favorite rock n roll clubs/bars in Iowa! Located right off the Mississippi where…read morethe boats are docked to shore, this is a great place to cast your anchor and hang out for a night and watch some music! When entering the bar you might think you are in a different land, and in a different time! It feels kinda like an Irish pub in a dungeon! But there's a pool table so you know your safe! There are two long bars one on the side room where the music is and one in the main room! I have been here numerous times of the past 10 years and the bar tenders always seem to be the same. And they are great! Prices are great too, you can get your fancy whisky or craft brews, but they also carry cans of PBR, and Old Mil for us on a budget! The music room is great, it has great sound, and Aaron H. who has booked here for years brings in great stuff, a totally curated room of music! The locals just come here cause there is live music and they usually leave satisfied in their choice cause Aaron has great taste! I have been lucky enough to play here a few times and every time I have had a great time! They have a great back patio as well, but like I said they are right off the Mississippi so it might get kinda buggy sometimes! This is a total gem if you find yourself in Dubuque!

But, the vibe and scene of The Famous Mockingbird channels the ghost of Campbell Steele and does it well. If you have a chance to see a concert/show here - here is what you need to know: 1) you can buy your tickets in advance with no service fee 2) arrive early (at least 30 mins) to get your seat, for general admission on a sold out show, you might go earlier. 3) speaking of seating, the venue consists of a few high top tables and bistro tables. Arrive early to snag one of these. There is also a few high top to the side of the "stage" and behind the stage area by the bar. Otherwise you stand. 4) it's a small venue, but not too loud. Very cozy and intimate with a cool vibe. 5) they only serve beer (mostly local and some light beer standards) and wine 6) the front of house offers some fun retail opportunities such as beautiful local jewelry and prints. I appreciate the great new rotation of artists The Famous Mockingbird will bring to the area. Please support them and live music!

The Englert Theatre is an Iowa City treasure…read more I had the pleasure of attending the Nutcracker with my family this past weekend and The Englert Theatre did not disappoint. The theatre is well maintained; it's a cozy space and there isn't a bad seat in the house. Additionally, the staff is passionate and insanely helpful. The Theatre was opened over 100 years ago (1912) by a husband and wife (the Englerts) -- it actually used to be a stable. Mr. Englert passed away in 1920 and it changed ownership (of which ended up running the theatre for 80 years before selling). It almost burned down in 1926 but after a huge amount of fundraising, was rebuilt to its 1920s glory and charm. Eventually, the City of Iowa City was persuaded to purchase the theater and hold it in trust until funds could be raised for a newly formed nonprofit to purchase and renovate the space. In 2004, after an immense amount of fundraising, the Englert returned to the community with its first live performance in over 40 years. Truly, a Downtown Iowa City, gem. The Englert has two huge festivals each year -- Mission Creek and Witching Hour. Beside that you can catch a plethora of different shows throughout the year-- all of which seem to be priced accordingly. I'd probably give this closer to a 4.5 rating, vs 5. I only say that because in my nearly 30 years as an Iowa City resident, I can't say many of the shows have attracted me to attend. Additionally, concessions are limited. I must note: my mother-in-law wasn't insanely thrilled with how handicapped accessible the bathrooms were. (Though there is an elevator and there are wheelchair accessible seating areas on both floors.) Iowa City has a parking problem, so it's not the Englert's fault. I'd recommend the Dubuque Street Parking Ramp. But all in all, how lucky are we to have The Englert live and thrive in Iowa City?

The general admission floor area gains you an up close and personal experience right up to the stage. Unlike many venues there's even a concession stand near the front area. You can't beat $3 cans of beer at a concert. Of course being a casino there's even a few dozen slot machines within the venue to pass the time while waiting for your act to start. We saw The Struts and they really put on a high energy show. Our tickets were $30 and with that we were within touching distance of the group throughout the show. Also, cigarette smoke. But I really wanted to see The Mavericks perform so I went with my best friend. I was surprised how nice it was. I had a floor GA ticket and my friend was stuck standing by the bar. I tried to upgrade her ticket to no avail. They said the floor was filled to capacity due to fire rules. However we were able to get her down there anyway. I almost laughed out loud at their definition of "full". In New Orleans or Philly, this floor would only be considered 2/3 full. There was plenty of room which made it great! The acoustics were quite good. Great sight lines. Staff friendly and drinks cheap. No one was smoking in the music venue, only in the casino itself. Free garage parking. There are a couple of restaurants and a Subway if you want a quick hoagie. I did not eat here.
