We went to three other bars that were packed. This one wasn't. That should have been the clue. Thirst won out and we went in and were promptly not greeted by the bartender. Of course the four other patrons watching the race were probably getting the best of service, but since no one said a single word, I couldn't tell you. Gus, we overhead his name later, begrudgingly walked over to where we stood at the bar (perhaps a good five steps from where he started) and asked us what we wanted to drink. I gave my order and asked if the kitchen was open due to having seen a menu on the wall and two other patrons with dirty dishes. He looked at me like I spoke another language, so I repeated it. I believe the word yes, came from his mouth. I couldn't tell because he never spoke another word to us. Not, can I get you something to eat? Would you like a refill on that empty beer? Would you like me to tell you how much you owe so you can get out of here? The drunk guy to the left spoke to us, the couple to the other side of us left and yet, good old Gus was worried more about his winning the NASCAR race. Which he did much to the dismay of the drunk guy. So, we pushed money towards him and he gave us change. My husband, sweetheart that he is, even left a buck tip on the $2 we spent.
