Being extremely low maintenance in general; I would choose adventures every day.. I just want to wash, brush & GO! I've been going to the same stylist on O'ahu for over a decade, so of course I was nervous to embark on a new relationship here on Kaua'i. Apparently, when it comes to my hurrr, I have high standards. Go figure! ‍ So I Google-stalked Boston Hair Design & called them to discuss this new adventure. Annmarie took my call & appeased my concerns. She booked me with her hubby Rick, the lead stylist at the salon. Rick is awwwwweeeessssooommmmmeee...! I mean we chatted like old friends immediately & the conversation just went happily for the entire time it took for him to take on the 90% pirate / 10% mermaid locks. I'll admit... I went a year & a half without a trim. It was dangerous territory for his first attempt. He listened to my needs & cut my hair to accommodate my lack of desire to maintain (yes even brush at times) or style. And I was stoked when he was all done!!! A lot of stylists will try to make your hair what they want to see or attempt to solicit a ton of expensive products. Having done dealt with this cray mane for over 30 years, I know what I want & what products work for me. Lots of trial & error! And Rick was down with that. Looks like I discovered my stylist for at least the next decade. And a couple of friends down at Boston Salon. Yeeee; that's a win for me, now to hit those sails! For review purposes; my hair is weathered like a surfer. I'm Caucasian, but my hair has taken on a similar texture to Latina ladies: thiiiicccckkkk & full to the max. I haven't dyed it in over 15 years & use organic shampoo & conditioner & a wet / dry brush. It's dry even if I go days without washing it. And again, I'm a brush & go kind of gal so no products after the shower, except for maybe some coconut oil...

I had an appt for a wash…read moreand style so I came in & perused some photos on my phone so I could show Rick, my hairstylist/owner. My cousin was first so we sat for a bit until Rick arrived as we came in a few minutes early for our appointments. I wanted long, flowy curls that would stand up to a few hours and into the night since I knew my hair would relax with the humidity and just naturally since my hair is long and fine. By the time it was my turn, I discussed my idea with Rick, showing my photos and telling him my hair doesn't hold a curl after awhile so I have to spray it with a lot of hairspray. He washed my hair with very warm water, then blow-dried/blow-out first to dry my hair. If the water is too hot, just communicate that. The hair dryer reminded me of my Dyson the way the air flowed and sounded. Afterwards, Rick sprayed my hair with an extreme hold hairspray prior to curling with a curling iron then sprayed again w/hairspray. I'd say only one time I felt the hot curling iron really close to my scalp. Otherwise, things went smoothly. I was probably finished within an hour. My curls were definitely sturdy. I asked Rick if he would tease the back of my hair since I like volume but he didn't want to add another dimension & mess with the curls. The curls held below the chin for the rest of the night but fell around my face and around my head. I think it was the humidity and because I have fine hair. It was a pretty style and my cousin who has really thick hair had curls that lasted all day and into the evening. My other cousin had an updo with soft face-framing curls. That was very elegant and the design of her bun in the back was intricate. Rick did a nice job working with her shorter-length hair with lots of bobby pins and creative design. The shop has a modern & spacious feel. There's a eyebrow services place adjoining the shop.

I only did my hair with here but I just want to say thank you to Angelina for creating such an awesome up do for my wedding day a few weeks ago. I searched all over for a stylist in Kauai. For me that was one of the hardest searches. Kauai is not as busy as the other Hawaiian island so modern, up to date stylist are far and few between. At least from the Internet pool. I planned my whole wedding through the Internet. I did find one other salon although they took forever and a day and by the time they responded they were booked. Angelina responded to my call promptly and with so much joy and excitement, she made me excited as well after my endless search. She responded to emails and replied to all my questions on a timely manner. The day of the wedding she was the first person I saw and after a weeks vacation in Hawaii prior to that day I was in need of some pampering. She made me feel at home in her tiny studio enough for myself, my photographer, my mom and her but it was intimate enough to have an awesome conversation with the 3 of them. Angelina was very kind and listened to my wants and that can be seen through my photos and her work. She made my hair look like a bouquet of roses it was so beautiful. My husband was worried because I have a lot of hair and he loves it down but I really wanted it elegant. He absolutely loved it, thought I looked amazing and a little sexy too. ;). Thanks a million. The woman I spoke with told me they could fit me in that same day at 5:30 p.m. and explained that the charge would be $35 per 30 minutes. When I arrived, it turned out she was the stylist who helped me. She patiently worked through the matting before closing time at 7:00 p.m. and was able to save my long hair with relatively little damage or cutting. The only hair that needed to be cut were two small rope-like knots to help separate them. I was incredibly grateful for her patience, skill, and care. Mahalo to Queara (Kiara) for taking the time to help me. I highly recommend her to anyone needing a stylist who is both knowledgeable and compassionate.

Just from that facial I knew that she had a talent for making women feel beautiful. She has a calm demeanor and she's really sweet. Since then, Mia has done my makeup a few times and I've seen her for waxings as well. Mia has a lot of experience with makeup and it's apparent in her work. I've gotten artistic makeup done with her--pudding on my head type of artistry-- and bridal makeup for a photo shoot. Each look was unique and pretty, yet still looked like me. None of that--oh my goodness she's wearing choke makeup kine---it was me wearing makeup, more like the makeup just accentuated my features. Mia also does waxings, which here in Hawai`i is a must! However, her shop for waxings and facials are on her home island of Kaua'i. So if you're ever visiting Kaua'i or if you're from Kaua'i, look her up for a facial and waxings. I've gotten a wax from her a few times and it's been much more manageable than other wax experiences I've had. She uses hard wax---much better in my opinion-- it takes a little bit more patience, BUT there is MUCH less irritation than from strip wax. Strip wax may be fast--but a bit more uncomfortable--to me at least. Mia is the total package, she has a talent with makeup, aesthetician work, and has the pleasant demeanor which I look for in a person in this type of work.
