Came with my cousins to get our hair done for a formal event that evening. I had an appt for a wash and style so I came in & perused some photos on my phone so I could show Rick, my hairstylist/owner. My cousin was first so we sat for a bit until Rick arrived as we came in a few minutes early for our appointments. I wanted long, flowy curls that would stand up to a few hours and into the night since I knew my hair would relax with the humidity and just naturally since my hair is long and fine. By the time it was my turn, I discussed my idea with Rick, showing my photos and telling him my hair doesn't hold a curl after awhile so I have to spray it with a lot of hairspray. He washed my hair with very warm water, then blow-dried/blow-out first to dry my hair. If the water is too hot, just communicate that. The hair dryer reminded me of my Dyson the way the air flowed and sounded. Afterwards, Rick sprayed my hair with an extreme hold hairspray prior to curling with a curling iron then sprayed again w/hairspray. I'd say only one time I felt the hot curling iron really close to my scalp. Otherwise, things went smoothly. I was probably finished within an hour. My curls were definitely sturdy. I asked Rick if he would tease the back of my hair since I like volume but he didn't want to add another dimension & mess with the curls. The curls held below the chin for the rest of the night but fell around my face and around my head. I think it was the humidity and because I have fine hair. It was a pretty style and my cousin who has really thick hair had curls that lasted all day and into the evening. My other cousin had an updo with soft face-framing curls. That was very elegant and the design of her bun in the back was intricate. Rick did a nice job working with her shorter-length hair with lots of bobby pins and creative design. If I could give this place more than five stars, I would! I called every single salon on island with the same message explaining what I needed help with and this place was the only place that texted me back with compassion and real help that same day. I was at the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit on Oahu and had a hospital bun. I had a lot of seizures within a short period of time which matted and dreaded my hair. I could not detangle it myself and it was weighing on my self-confidence. After so much hair loss already, I wanted to save the length. This team responded to my request of detangling with such care, compassion, and patience. When I arrived I was assured that they were going to take care of me and my hair. This team was so kind to me and worked diligently on my hair for at least 3.5 hours. I was reminded that this is why they do what they do in this service industry. They accomplished this tedious task with gentleness, wonderful hospitality and fun. Towards the end of the detangling Jamie wanted to trim the ends of my hair to make my hair fuller with cleaner ends. I was floored by this team's generosity as they did NOT even charge me for this service that took up hours of their time and much effort. Jaime- you are the best! This team is extraordinary and I am forever grateful for their dedication to their work, their generosity and their kind hearts. This is a rare thing to find these days. Just okay. They make you sit and wait for your appointment before even acknowledging you, and the wash chair is really uncomfortable. Anne Marie drives way too fast in her little sports car and nearly hit me and my child in the parking lot of their new location, then was rude when I confronted her. If she knew I was a past client and not just another tourist, who knows if she would've acted the same. Either way, I won't be supporting this business or the owner again. read more

I went in with my long thick hair for just a trim while I was on vacation. I asked for an inch and a half off with some long layers in the back and a little framing around my face. Easy right? I saw AnneMarie and I left with basically a Rachel haircut from the 90s. A ton of short layers going halfway back my head. It's like a shaggy cut? WTF. By the time I realized she wasn't doing what I asked it was too late. I was too upset to say anything and I even tipped her! I have no idea how to fix it without just growing it out and I'm so upset. I look ridiculous! As others have said she was distracted greeting customers and answering the phone. Maybe she forgot what I asked for? I spent so long growing out my hair. I took a shot thinking it was just a trim and based on other reviews thought it would be fine but it was not. I'm so crazy upset and sad now. This will take so long to fix if it can even be fixed. Being part pirate & part mermaid can be quite exciting... However hair maintenance with all the salt, sand & sun adventures isn't exactly fun; I mean would you rather spend time enjoying the beautiful outdoors or tackling dreadlocks? Being extremely low maintenance in general; I would choose adventures every day.. I just want to wash, brush & GO! I've been going to the same stylist on O'ahu for over a decade, so of course I was nervous to embark on a new relationship here on Kaua'i. Apparently, when it comes to my hurrr, I have high standards. Go figure! ‍ So I Google-stalked Boston Hair Design & called them to discuss this new adventure. Annmarie took my call & appeased my concerns. She booked me with her hubby Rick, the lead stylist at the salon. Rick is awwwwweeeessssooommmmmeee...! I mean we chatted like old friends immediately & the conversation just went happily for the entire time it took for him to take on the 90% pirate / 10% mermaid locks. I'll admit... I went a year & a half without a trim. It was dangerous territory for his first attempt. He listened to my needs & cut my hair to accommodate my lack of desire to maintain (yes even brush at times) or style. And I was stoked when he was all done!!! A lot of stylists will try to make your hair what they want to see or attempt to solicit a ton of expensive products. Having done dealt with this cray mane for over 30 years, I know what I want & what products work for me. Lots of trial & error! And Rick was down with that. Looks like I discovered my stylist for at least the next decade. And a couple of friends down at Boston Salon. Yeeee; that's a win for me, now to hit those sails! For review purposes; my hair is weathered like a surfer. I'm Caucasian, but my hair has taken on a similar texture to Latina ladies: thiiiicccckkkk & full to the max. I haven't dyed it in over 15 years & use organic shampoo & conditioner & a wet / dry brush. It's dry even if I go days without washing it. Aloha I wanted to share my experience I walked into Boston hair design the lady that was working very nice asked me who Im seeing I wasn't sure, she told me I was seeing Rick the owner. Great was happy getting my hair fixed the review were pretty good ones. So I waited awhile another lady walked in. She had the same appointment as me but hers wasn't approved by him mine was , I told the lady isn't my appointment at 3pm? So she had to go tell him he has the bring person for the appointment. So he called me over .. I cut my own hair and I didn't cut so good in the back, he asked me how I wanted it cut we had something to work with not much but my hair wasn't a lost cause. He made is sound like he couldn't fix it. I told him I can just leave. This guy Rick the own charges 70$ bucks he didn't even cut much off my head, he did have to think a little about my bob and what would work out because I did cut my own hair. I've cut my hair many times sometimes I messed up and every time Oliver fixed it with no problem, Oliver wasn't availability this time I need it fixed ASAP Most salons on Kauai are 35 to 50$ 70$ is mainland prices we are a small island and there's no real Master hair cutter on Kauai even worth 70$ bucks not even close I have a 40$ hair cut max! I know my hair very well I know what a good bob looks like, when you have a good bob show stoping. People stop and say wow your hair is amazing that hasn't happened so far. Rick did cut my hair better then me haha this time! He asked if I wanted my hair blow dried all the way well for 70$ bucks I wanted it washed with a head massage and neck and blowed out and a style hello !!!! Never will I spend my hard working money at Boston hair I will tell all my friends and family my experience and hope they don't spend any money here either. This has happened to many other people to I hope they share their own experience at this place so people know where not to go visitors and tourists. Rick is rude in a nice way , he's also little arrogant. Only thing that stood out was the nice lady that greeted me when I first walked into the salon she gets a start for her friendliness. 70$ plus 10$ tip for 40$ hair cut! Unreal! read more

They are good at what they do, BUT they charge by gender and not for length of hair, which seems unfair considering I am a female with hair shorter than my brother's hair. My hair is way above my shoulders and I simply got a trim and a trim for women is $60, but his trim was $35. Also, when they blow dry my hair the air is super hot and hurts. read more

Being a bridesmaid in a destination wedding was a complete blast. The most stressful part for me, was worrying about how to do my make-up in the Hawaiian humidty. I am so happy we found Chelsea Masters. She was reliable and timely with all her texts/emails. She was early and professional to set up her make-up station. For sale on the walls are art works by local Kaua'i artists!! I went to Owner Ann Marie for a trim and to freshen up my hair color. The color we used several months ago faded slowly into a very beautiful dusty color, very on pointe! The stylists here over the past five years have all been amazing! At first, I was not so sure about this hair salon because of the fact that I had never had my hair highlighted before. The staff and the people at the salon made me feel very comfortable and seemed like they knew what they were doing with my hair. Rick is absolutely the best hairdresser I have ever had. He's funny, sweet, extremely talented and an expert stylist. Anne Marie is excellent too. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. However, the skill is the reason I go there. I have extremely fine thin hair which is not easy to style or cut. Rick has given me a chic asymmetrical cut that is easy to care for and style.
