Very disappointed with my recent visit. I've shopped here before without issue, but this experience…read morewas completely different. First, Google listed the opening time as 10 a.m., but the store did not open until 11. We had driven from Baltimore to get ahead of bad weather, tried calling multiple times, and found the voicemail full. There's no website to confirm hours, so we were left guessing whether to wait. Once inside, we spent nearly two hours selecting eight fabrics for multiple projects. Many fabrics were not priced, and the single employee cutting fabric had to repeatedly walk to the front of the store to ask the owner for pricing or answers to basic questions, which made the process extremely slow. The final issue was a large-print fabric that had deep slashes running several yards into the roll, along with visible black marks. I asked that the damaged portion be cut off or that cutting begin from the other end of the roll. The owner refused and told me that if I didn't like it, I didn't have to buy it, stating multiple times that they are a "for profit store." I have over 50 years of experience buying fabric and have never been expected to pay for clearly damaged yardage. We ultimately walked out without purchasing anything, leaving eight rolls at the cutting table--well over $1,000 in sales lost. It's disappointing to see how much this store has changed. It was once staffed by knowledgeable, helpful people who wanted to assist customers. I won't be returning.

Inside several spaces in an industrial building, they sell to some of the area's top restaurants. I picked up four large bowls for my wife and she loves them. I am so happy to report back and say that I loved my experience at Material Things. I participated…read morein an 8 week course with about 12 students where I started out having a hard time making anything. By the end of my course I've made some beautiful bowls and mugs along the way that I'm super proud of. During my time in classes with Kiel (wonderful guy but he has recently moved to AZ) he created a chill space each week. The class had some beginners and also some intermediate throwers and Kiel did a seamless job helping everyone and sharing his expertise. During the class each week we were able to throw on the wheel to create new pieces and take our creations from start to finish. For the $360 price tag I think that it was a great investment into a new hobby. I made about 10 different pieces that I took home with me at the end of that I'm very proud of. Also I want to give a huge shoutout to the owners for opening up the space during the very stressful Election week so that anyone in courses could come and have an outlet every single day. Typically their open studio hours are 4x a week but they made the decision to offer them everyday and for extended hours. Their kindness deserves so much praise and I wish nothing but the best for this business. I'm looking forward to taking future classes with the owner Katie and also inviting friends to join me :) Thank you to the Material Things Team
