Loved the outdoor cafe experience and the plethora of pastry and bread options. I settled on a pretty basic but delicious breakfast sandwich and was disappointed I could not sub out the gluten free bread that was clearly listed on the menu. No substitutions. Came here for breakfast and always wanted to come again for lunch. One thing that sucked is apparently you can't change the sandwiches. I wanted the Italian, but didn't want fontina which sucked so I tried to make my own Italian. However, a lot of the ingredients I was looking for were not on the list. My Italian was: prosciutto, mortadella, salami, mayo, arugula, oil, red onion, and tomatoes for a total of $30!!! The bread they use is a perfect mixture of crunchy, soft, and I love that they grill the bread as well. The brisket bahn mi I enjoyed better probably cause it cost less half as much and tasted better. The meat and bread quality is just so good I understand the hype. Eating outside in Los Angeles is so nice we ended up getting some pastries that I thought were interesting such as the tahini croissant, date miso cookie, and pistachio cookie. I have gone to this establishment for brunch 10 years apart and saw Gjusta change from a bakery/brunch establishment with minimal seating to a full patio arrangement. Lively ambience aside (I mean c'mon, a stones throw away from Venice Beach), let's talk the food. The first time I came I had a delicious poppyseed bagel sandwich with no cream cheese, just chicken, tomato spread and greens. The second time around I had shakshuka and brought some baked goods (tahini brownie and baklava croissant - ingenuous and delicious) home for my husband. I basically inhaled my shakshuka-perfectly sauced and egged and had some surprise jalapeños that I sopped up gingerly with their house made bread. There's plenty of patio space outside and the front is always busy -- make sure to pick which line to stand in whether you are getting express (coffee, pastries) or food (in the back). The management of this establishment is extremely lackluster, weak, and all over the place in the worst ways. If you patronize this establishment, it's wholly and only due to seeing other transplants to our city cruising through "hip" places in entitled belief that overpaying for simple food, when little of it is fresh beyond bread items, along with seating yourself, is a status-bringing activity as long as others of that ilk see them too. There are a zillion fantastic, local places to indulge in our wonderful city that employs locals, delivers wonderful cuisine and service on their own merits, and treats Los Angeles as a largely working-class place than this depressingly distorted perception that it must be a perpetual front and flex like everywhere is Bel Air or Bev Hills shown on reality TV. This establishment is placating to the latter nonsense because nouveau riche transplants, or mostly those faking being exactly that from everywhere except LA which makes up most of them, feel warmly validated by paying over $20 for a simple bagel with toppings as long as they can show on their social media that they sat outside with their league, so to speak, at a supposedly hipster cafe in Venice like they're supporting local business when this establishment has an admitted reputation for treating their workers like complete garbage. Was in LA for a weekend and got this reco. Nice location, not too far from the beach. The premise: a bakery. The reality: a cafeteria. We arrived at 1:45 PM on a Sunday afternoon. First of all, it's unclear where to enter. You enter into the seating area. Then you enter the doors that say "IN/OUT" (use "IN" to get in). It's awkward because it looks and feels like the kitchen door and there are servers going in and out with large plates of food. Anyway, you get in, and then take a left and go get a number. Then get in line and *wait for your number to be called* because only then you get to order. There's time to think about what you want because there's probably a line but having a number is crucial. We ordered our food - a few sandwiches and a salad. Don't forget to take the number table stand they give you. Go back out those doors (OUT), and look for seating. Good luck to you because on a gorgeous weekend, there won't be any seating. Go sit on the benches. Nobody really helps you find a place to sit. If you speak good Spanish, then do that. Or take your elderly grandma because you'll get seated faster (and your grandma will like to get out). The food may arrive earlier than you think. I was wandering around looking for seating and happened to be carrying my number around (this is different than the first number, ok? it's the table stand number), and the server asked me where I was sitting and I said, "I don't have a table," and so he just handed me a plate with one sandwich on it and left. So, they don't help you find a table even though there is a sign that says they do. Anyway, waited around for about 15 minutes, got a salad and another sandwich again with no table. Finally swooped in like vultures on a vacated table (still dirty), and ate our food. Oh yeah, this is a restaurant, not a game where you find tables. Anyway, let's talk about the food. The market salad was a pile of very fresh lettuce with a nice dressing on it. My daughter said she felt like a rabbit eating it so I ate most of it. The American Banh Mi was not spicy, so they nailed that. It was pretty good. The salmon burger was proclaimed to be, "delicious" by my other daughter, so there's that. All in all, the food was good. The ambiance reminded me of those movies where people order salads at an outdoor patio restaurant - for obvious reasons. I don't know if the baked goods are really good because we didn't have any. Recently moved to LA from Stanford, and I can say this is my favorite place to connect with old and new friends. The menu has something for everyone, including kids. The early morning vibe is neighborly and friendly. Sitting outside on the wooden benches and tables is a pleasant way to start the day. Mi gusta, Gjusta. Gjusta is a pretty bad ass bakery in Venice Beach. This eatery is famous for their fresh baked bread, pastries, coffee, and lunch items. Why someone would give them less than five stars is mind boggling. Yes, it's expensive. Yes, parking sucks. And yes, it'll take forever to get your order. But the experience of dining here goes beyond the food. The storefront gives off the vibes of an old time market place. There's hustle and bustle and it slightly feels like the set of a film. Despite the hate, they also have a constant line out the front door and a picturesque patio on the back porch. I love that they sell a number of house-made items, including jams, honey, and fermented goodies. They even own the space next door, where they sell Gjusta home goods and beauty products. Pretty much the perfect place to shop if you're ever in the market for a house warming gift. I recently stopped by and tried their egg sandwich without meat and their apple strudel. It was under seasoned and served cold even though it was supposed to be hot. Just sad. The tahini brownie I took home also was not good. Overly bitter and cakey. Not chocolatey at all or fudgey somehow. The woman at the counter was very sweet though and helped me walk through bakery options with no nuts in them. Don't worry, you will get more attitude, this time from a manager! Order was placed, manager went to check on a salad (if it was still available), it was....she forgot to ring it in. When she (with attitude) read back the order....good luck hearing anything with the music and million people talking....we missed that she missed the greek salad. All food comes out everyone is eating except one and she had to go track down the food, wait even longer for the salad and then eat by herself which she just ended up throwing away. I come here often. This was one of the most pretentious, attitude-filled experiences to date. They automatically charge a 20% service fee on all bills fyi. Beyond that hefty service charge, menu prices are quite steep here, imo overpriced. Build your own sandwich: we got pastramilax on an open-faced sesame bagel with dijon, sprouts, capers, pickled red onions. each topping has a different price, and none of those prices are listed on their menu lol, so it can get expensive depending on your add-ons. avocado was $5 extra which was found criminal. it was good but somewhat standard to any other lox on bagel place in LA.
