As I hear, this is a Chicago deep dish classic. And other than the big bummer that we couldn't get dairy-free spinach (their spinach comes pre prepared with dairy) on our make-your-own pie... the food was excellent. I even took a slice home to try cold, and really enjoyed it cold too. Give the vegan cheese a try - we added artichokes, tomatoes, and jalapeños to our vegan pie (and red pepper flakes for an extra punch). I actually dream about going back to this place, it was that good. Come to think of it... they do sell their frozen non-vegan pies in Meijer-- perhaps one day they'll carry the vegan version. read more

While in town for a work conference, I was looking for authentic Chicago deep dish pizza and was pleasantly surprised to find this restaurant while walking around the area. Upon entering, hubby and I were greeted by an open door, upbeat music, and warm employees before being quickly seated. Upon inquiring about a vegan deep dish pizza, our waitress Gaby informed us that it would take 45 minutes to an hour to be ready. Considering the long cook time for our pizza, I ordered the hummus plate appetizer which was flavorful and had a great balance of pita bread, hummus, and veggies. As our deep dish pizza arrived at our table, hubby and I were impressed by how perfectly cooked it looked. The pizza was delicious and flavorful vegan cheese then topped with black olives, green olives, and mushrooms. The crust was crispy with the hint of sweetness which we later learned was due to the use of sweet corn in their crust. Gaby was a friendly and attentive waitress who made sure our drinks were constantly refilled. The deep dish pizza is the best I've ever had! What I appreciate most is the consistency, whether I've visited this location or another Gino's East, the quality is always outstanding. You know exactly what you're getting, and it never disappoints. I also love their make-your-own pizza options, which allows you to customize your perfect pie. Since deep dish takes a little time to bake (as it should!), their appetizer selection is a huge plus and makes the wait enjoyable. Overall, another fantastic experience. Had lunch at Gino's after reading so many great reviews and wanting to try an iconic spot. I didn't know deep-dish pizza would be so filling. My group of three ordered a small I think?... and we could not finish it. It was good though. The Mozzarella sticks with ranch were fire. I think we just went at an off time because it took quite a bit of time to receive our dessert. We put in the brownie when we ordered our main food, but we had to wait like 45 min after we were done to actually get it. So glad my daughter found this restaurant while we were visiting Chicago! It was very busy on a Friday night, even though we got there early that evening. Service was great. My daughter ordered the 9 inch deep crust, pizza and had a hard time finishing it on her own. One of the servers came to cut it and put one slice on our plates. Another server told us what makes their pizza unique is that the crust is made from cornbread. It was so delicious. I could've eaten the crust by itself. I know some people put Geno's East down a little compared to those other pizza places in Chicago, but I don't know why. First, I do prefer their sauce over the place, for me it seems a little sweeter and more tomato forward. I also prefer the one giant piece of sausage over the entire pizza so each bite gets sausage. We decided on deep dish for our first meal in Chicago. We've tried all the chains before and came back here because we remember the crust being light and flaky. We arrived around 7 on a Friday night and were seated in about 10 minutes. We know deep dish pizzas take a long time, so we started with the harvest salad. It was delicious but wish it had romaine instead of iceberg. To kill our time waiting for the pizza, we also ordered a thin crust Diavola. It was really good. For deep dish, we got the Meaty Legend. It came out quicker than 45 minutes since they said they weren't that busy. Their signature crust had really good flavor but we would have liked it a little crunchier. The mixture of the meets was delicious. For dessert we got the deep dish brownie. It was light and fluffy like a cake and had good chocolate flavor. They have Pepsi so I had to get an adult beverage. The white sangria didn't seem like it had alcohol in it, but it hit me hard after a long day of travel. Julio was a very attentive server. There were games on the TVs. And although the atmosphere here was great, I don't feel their pizza lived up how much this place was hyped. I have been to several outstanding Italian restaurants that have served authentic food with fresh ingredients and this was not one of them. Maybe this was because on our visit we were extremely limited on what we could dine on as Gino's only provided us one slice of mediocre pizza which was made with an unflavored sauce and a crust that was average. I will say it was nice that the pizzas were brought out on hot skillets fresh out of the oven, but I would of been so much nicer if the pizza had some wow factor from better ingredients and preparation to deliver a memorable taste. read more

Taking 2 deep dish pizzas from this location "to go" on a recent trip to Chicago turned out to be massively disappointing: a regular cheese pizza from Costco has more cheese than this supposed "deep dish"!! No "cheese pull" whatsoever!! And I paid $70 to carry this waste in a cooler bag on my 3 hour flight home?! I wanted to avoid getting the mass-produced version shipped nationwide by buying/picking up in person, and the pizza DID seem to be made in-store (because it wasn't shrink wrapped and wasn't perfectly formed), and so it IS representative of the product at this location, making it even more disappointing. I've been loyal to Gino's since my first trip to Chicago 30 years ago, but that ends now: love the crust, but it needs to be filled! read more

This was our 1st experience with Chicago deep dish -- to mixed reviews. I loved the proportions of cheese and sauce, but my daughters did not. We also tried the sticks and dips. The spinach sticks were...odd. Not bad, not great. Almost like spinach dip in a mozzarella stick form. We got our pizza delivered, and I don't recommend it. Our pizza was a bit soggy, and the crust separated easily from the bottom/rest of the pizza. The mozzarella sticks were not stretchy, likely because they cooled. read more

This is the smallest Gino's I think I've ever been in--although most of the Gino's East locations have been closed! This South Loop location is much easier to get to than the one in Streeterville, and we had zero problem parking around 7pm on a Wednesday. That was truly a surprise, not gonna lie. In that spirit of full honesty... I was a little disappointed. The crust of our pizza tasted a little different than it has in the past--Gino's used to have this distinctive yellowy-orange crust because they had a cornbread crust. This was considerably lighter than it has been and it did not have that distinctive taste. I hope they didn't alter their recipe to taste like lesser chains, because the Lou's and Giordano's of the world have long been overrated. I'm glad I got to taste a pizza I've been curious about though--the Chicago Fire--because I usually get the Gino's special. The CF was alright, but not nearly as spicy as I'd expected, and it won't replace my usual choice. I was really surprised to find that there is no baby changing station anywhere. I asked, and they don't, so be aware of that. But in 2024 there are places without them which was a surprise, and luckily my car was right out front so I could change her in the back because I don't know what I would have done otherwise--I may have had to leave. read more
