Overall the food was edible, service was friendly. Inside the restaurant had a family restaurant vibe and food came out pretty quickly. We ordered a pizza, ribs, and Italian beef. The pizza was edible, the ribs were not very good but also edible, the Italian beef we were disappointed to find out that they changed the menu from having an addon of "sweet peppers and onions" to "peppers and onions." The change from sweet peppers to peppers changed the taste and doesn't really warrant an extra charge to have slightly cooked bell peppers. Beef was salty but tender. Such a fun place and feels so historic. Mafia themed with lots of flyers and other things on the walls. Beautiful old building. Nina, our waitress was so fun and friendly and soooo busy covering the bar and many tables. I had some of the best ribs I've ever had, so tender and not drenched in sauce, with a side of cole slaw and waffle fries. My French 75 cocktail was very tasty. We picked The Exchequer for dinner after a matinee show at The Auditorium Theater. Location wise, it was great. The decor was fine if you're into Al Capone. They had Marquee so the Cubs were on which is always a plus. The service was friendly, but a bit slow. The food was fine but not outstanding. My teens liked their burgers. The steak frites was a bit tough and my "medium" was more like "medium well." The fries were good though and the onions and butter on top gave things a good flavor. And this is just me being picky but I hate being served a steak on a plastic plate. I would go back but probably try a burger or sandwich. read more

Ahh Exchequer! A place loaded with memories from my college days. This spot had a warm and cozy vibe, plenty of solid food options, and great service. 20 year old me would usually get a patty melt or chicken tenders. 40-something year old me shared a Caesar salad and deep dish pizza with my friend. The Caesar salad was fresh and flavorful. We got the mob pizza which has sausage, pepperoni, garlic and Italian beef. It was cheesy and garlicky! Just off the Amtrak at Union Station. Checked into a hotel. On short walk and searching Yelp for brew pub and pizza around me - here I am. Pub has a lively convivial vibe not far from the waterfront. Starting with a good floral fresh hop IPA. TVs to watch a little sports. I'm sitting at the bar - cool bartender. And playing some really upbeat music on the jukebox. right now Johnny B Good from the 50s or 60s is grabbing my attention. Nice start to the first trip to Chicago. Came to Exchequer for dinner. The place gives old school Chicago vibes. The restaurant is dimly lit and decorated with posters. Our server was very friendly and checked in on us without being too much. We ordered the goat cheese appetizer. The portion size was very big. The tomato sauce was well balanced and it tasted great with the Italian bread. I ordered the chicken parm sandwich with fries with my appetizer. First time checking this place out. It's got some good history - highly recommend reading up on it if you love Chicago history. Place was clean and a pretty straight forward American fare bar/restaurant. Got a table in mid-afternoon on a Saturday without issue. Food was ok. Waitress was really nice - felt bad because I think she was the only one waiting tables and doing stuff behind the bar. Definitely understaffed. Overall, good experience. Came here for authentic deep dish pizza and was very happy with our dining experience! Our server was very helpful in choosing the right sized pizza for our group. We ordered all meat and one with chicken, both were delicious and very hearty! Every bite is full of cheese. The side salad was perfect to cleanse the palette between cheesy bites of the pie. We had dinner here with my cousin a few weeks ago on a Thursday. They were staying nearby and picked this place. I've walked past her a million times but never been here. It's good, and has a very cool old school vibe. It's definitely a great place to bring out of town visitors. The pizza was fine (which in Chicago is definitely good enough), and a decent thin crust. At the last minute, a friend and I felt like pizza after work Friday night and I called to see if I could get a 5p reservation. It was easy to make and was there waiting for me when I arrived. They do seem to have open table but open table showed it was blocked out, maybe because it was too close to the time. They were willing to seat me even though my friend hadn't arrived and gave us a great booth towards the back. Decor is British pub but also feels very old school Chicago since this bar is 50 years old, under the el tracks on wasbash in the loop. We were greeted quickly and weren't ready yet. But a few minutes later someone else came to take our orders so we didn't wait long. However they were out of cider which is what my friend had been interested in. He settled on wine and I had a Guinness. The pizza took a normal length for pizza. The cost seems pretty high but definitely paying for location and ambiance. They call their 12" medium which fooled me especially with the higher price so we probably could have gotten the large since we were really hungry and wouldn't have minded leftovers. Still, it came packed full of toppings, lots of cheese, abd and a perfect browning on the cheese. I prefer the place near me, Mugs, because their pizza is more flavorful with basil added. But once I thought to add some salt , it was improved. My friend inhaled his, raving about how good it was. The check came quickly but we felt comfortable staying for a while because it wasn't full. Because we were doing a staycation in the Loop, The Exchequer Pub was one of the places I wanted to stop in at. It's been years since I was in here, but I gotta say, it was like going home after being gone for a while. The decor has not changed and they still have that lead ceiling that can jack up phone reception. They still have the movie poster from Psycho on the wall and the mug shot of Frank Sinatra being arrested for "Seduction"...HAHAHAHAHA! The Exchequer Pub always had a solid, no frills menu, with good pastas and sauces and great pizza. And the service was always friendly, even when things get hectic. We arrived at 4:45 pm for our reservation and the place was fairly empty. But I would say about 20 min later, people started trickling in, then flowing in. By the time we wrapped up, there was a line to get into the joint. We did not do appetizers because we wanted to get an entree and split the Lamb Chops (Four lollipop Greek style lamb chops served with roasted Greek potatoes). This was very good and there was nothing to take back to the room. The lamb chops were of a decent size and seasoned just right. The potatoes were also good. Although they were wedges, they fell apart (in a good way) when trying to pick one up to transfer to my plate...it got eaten nonetheless. For dinner, we all got the Capone's Rigatoni with meatballs and vodka sauce (for me and my BFF) and marinara for The Doctor. This was a nice size serving and this did go home with all of us for enjoyment later. The one thing I did notice that had not change was the number of pizza boxes going up front. They do a great take out business. The prices are great considering you are downtown in Chicago and you definitely get you money's worth. In town for business and went here for a bite. The vibe of the place is good, and seems like a nice spot to go and watch a game. The problem was the actual stuff I went there for. Ordered a draft beer and it was completely flat. I mean, I don't think I have ever had one that had less carbonation in it. Ordered a burger and fries and the burger itself was pretty solid, but the fries were cold like they had been sitting for a while. For the price of things, I had hoped to have a better solid bar meal, but instead could have had better for less somewhere else. I would give it another shot if I'm back in the area and maybe would try the pizza or the beef, but there are a lot of other options that will probably get my attention first. read more

Met some friends here before an event at the Auditorium Theatre on a Sunday evening. It is a convenient spot if you're attending something in the loop and a place that is reasonably priced with typical bar food and pizzas. There is plenty of garage parking around and the L stops make this place easy to access. The old gangster/mob references all over made us google the history of the place, which turns out has quite an extensive history! It was really cool to learn how the building relates to the 20s and Al Capone. We had a reservation and service was fairly slow, despite the restaurant not being completely full. Maybe it was an off night for everyone? It was about 10 minutes for a server to come check in on drink orders, which took another 10 minutes to get. They do have a full bar and were willing to make drinks off the menu, which was great. There are also vegetarian options, which was another reason we were pulled to this place for my friend. After placing our order, it was another 30 minutes before we got our food. Most tables around us were echoing the same sentiment about the wait. Unfortunately, we couldn't order a pizza due to concerns about not being able to take any leftovers into our show. So we chose bar/finger food and everything was fairly average. The wings were decent but nothing to rave about. The salad was the best part with the most flavor. The burgers were mildly warm and the fries were cold. There was supposedly a "special sauce" but I didn't have any on mine, nor did my friend. My friend specifically asked for an impossible burger and they served her a regular burger. Luckily we caught it and then it took her another 15 minutes to get her food. It seems the pizza is really the place to go, so if I'm back around I would want to try that. Also really trying to give this place the benefit of the doubt about the off night with the wait. We gave ourselves 2 and a half hours before our event and we barely made it on time due to the wait. If I'm around and not on a schedule, I'll probably go back and try the pizza with friends. It wasn't a horrible experience, but was average at best. read more

I have eaten here twice now and probably won't return. Nothing bad happened to make me not want to come back. It's just this place doesn't really stand out. The service is slow and lackluster, quite the opposite of other restaurants that surround the area. On another occasion, a friend and I stepped in for some pizza. We timed that it took 25 minutes for our leftover pizza to be boxed. The food is okay. It's not great, not terrible.
