I absolutely love Gingers. I have had way too many great times there to count. It's very laid back, whether empty or packed. The owner Sheila is cool and the bartenders are great. Iveth makes the best Bloody Mary's and Martini's around and Candice is also a welcomed surprise when she is behind the bar. I mostly like Ginger's. It's pretty relaxed, the pool table is comfortably situated in the back room instead of right in front of the doors, and they have my favorite mixing combination of beers on drafts. It's an unpretentious place to just hang out with friends and play a bad game of pool. However, I want to note that I have had the experience where gross straight men harass my friends twice now. I hope these are isolated incidences. read more

My friends and I were walking up and down 5th ave. We saw this spot and heard the bumping tunes. We didn't realize it was a lesbian bar until we saw a whole bunch of lesbian couples. I checked this place out Halloween weekend with a friend, sadly I wasn't feeling well that night but the bartender was so nice. Talking to us and giving me advice as to what would make me feel better. We were there early but it got crowded pretty fast once people started to come in with there costumes on. The music choose wasn't the best, nothing I felt the need to dance to but I wasn't up for too much dancing anyway. I would like to go back on a typical Saturday and see what its like. read more

Totally lame. I've tried going here several times since Cattyshack closed. Each time I hope that the people and atmosphere has magically migrated. It has not. It's got all the makings of a good bar - great outdoor space, reasonable prices, and a pool table. But it's just so lame. I had an awesome experience here. It's filled with queerness and fun shit. My queer gal pal and I just moved to Bklyn, and this spot totally fulfilled our desire for gay friendliness. It's not really hopping with QPOC per se but it has a range of patrons of various ages and culture, which I dig. There was an $8 beer/shot deal and hella fun karaoke on Thurs nights. read more

Stopped in Valentine's night with my girlfriend to grab a couple of drinks after work. I liked the vibe immediately: fairly diverse crowd, not too packed, fun music, and fast, attentive service. We chilled in the back room and talked while watching a group play pool, and I didn't feel as though I had to yell in order to be heard. The music (and, of course, alcohol) made me want to dance, but it doesn't seem like that's a thing here. I'll totally be back. read more

I have a lot of love for Ginger's. It's a solid place to go for a decent happy hour (from 5-8pm), has a great yard, a pool table, a semi-crappy juke box, and it's either totally dead or totally packed. Truth is, it's never really that spectacular, but i have so many great memories here. Most of the bartenders are friendly. The only real problem I have is that their mixed drinks have gone up way too high, and they're usually very weak. I'm not a beer drinker, and I find it really frustrating that I can no longer afford to get drunk at what used to be my second home. As a result, I haven't gone back much. Gingers is ok. As a professional blk person i would never reccomend it. There are statues of black servants from the 19 century on the wall ( think aunt jemimah and uncle ruckus...literally). To make matters worse the black slave statues are next to clown statues. When I asked the bartender about this she said thst the owners girlfriend was a "black phillipino woman" that purchased the black samba statues in the phillipines. Drinks are average, typical dive bar and does not take debit and credit cards. read more

I always wanted to make this my local hangout because I live in the neighborhood, but I am so sick of walking in there and seeing an old man behind the bar. This was my 2nd time at Ginger's. The first time I was brought here was after a Tegan and Sara concert. Some girls whom I was chopping it up in conversation with while waiting outside for the band to come out invited me after the meet and greetings were done. I've never really gotten asked to go to a bar before by people I've just met ha ha. Whoa, I just told you my life story or something. Anyways, the back area of this place had a nice chill atmosphere. I enjoyed Ginger's for the little outdoor area and the fact that the bartender mixed my drink well. Weak Jack & Coke's are no joke! Music is by jukebox so the patrons control what plays. There's also a pool table but I didn't even try to play. Some ladies are just a little too aggressive when it comes to pool... or so I've heard. read more

Ginger's is a nice, quiet bar. A good place to meet with friends, have a drink and catch up. But, for me, Ginger's is dangerous. There is a backyard outdoor seating area where you can drink and smoke. I smoked almost a whole pack of cigarettes the last time I was there. The bartender was very nice. The bar was overall very mellow and I was happy that I didn't have to shout into the ear of the person sitting several inches from me in order to carry on a conversation. read more

This is a good bar to come to when you want to relax with your friends. My friends and I visited sometime in the afternoon on a Sunday so it was pretty empty. They had two domestic drafts for one deal which was kind of nice. There is a pool table and a nice outdoor seating area for when the weather is nice. Overall I think this is a good place to come with friends to catch up. I'm not sure what the scene is like on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night. read more

It was Brooklyn Pride and one bartender here was clearly not prepared to do the job with courtesy, patience and professionalism. I ordered three beers and her first response was "We don't have that!" Technically, it was a beer they offered, but they had run out unbeknownst to me. The appropriate thing to do should have been to tell me what was available, but this girl was clearly too drunk or emotional to act accordingly. Next, I ordered a substitute beer and offered this rude bartender my debit card. She rolled her eyes and said it was cash only. Mind you- it was packed in the place, it was my first time there, so if there were any signs indicating 'cash only', I missed it-- rightfully so. In any case, I turn to my friend, who had already begun pulling out and counting cash for our drinks. I turn around to the bartender who is still rolling her eyes again, and who says "Do you see what you're doing? You're at a bar. Be ready!" She was clearly feeling herself and not realizing she was speaking to someone who respected himself enough to retort, "You need to calm down. I apologize for the thirty seconds it's taking to get you cash, but you need to calm down." She's taken aback and says "Did you seriously tell me to calm down? Do you do want these drinks 'cause I can take them away?!" At this point, all I could ask the childish bartender was "Are you being productive right now?" She was too dumb to understand. I put down my money, and walked away before things escalated. She needs to be let go. If you're a bartender and can't remain emotionally constant during a rush, you should not be a bartender read more

As someone who grew up in California and lived in San Francisco among all flavors of people, it never occurred to me that I would be treated badly - distinct from indifferently - at Gingers. One look at me and my friends and one bartender whips up shots that were not the ones I ordered, the cran and vodkas were ALL cran, and the bartender had the gall to say that the reason the drink was practically purple was because the cranberry coming out of the gun was "concentrated". Sorry, Gingers, I'm taking my girls somewhere else the next time we head out. Good luck surviving in this economy when you're hostile to newcomers who patronize your establishment. read more

Wow this bar has gotten soo gross. I stopped by in late december after hanging out a bit at Excelsior and found this bar's general atmosphere to be a turnoff. I don't feel that it's fair to criticize the place because an older crowd comes here. Even older lesbians need a bar. However let's keep it real: if you're going to serve food at a bar don't serve soup or anything that smells like gas. They were serving broccoli soup in the back of the bar and the whole place stunk so bad that after one round of drinks my friend I just had to get hell out of here. read more

considering that nyc technically has only two proper lesbian bars, this gets an extra star for being one of the two. i've always felt welcomed here whether it was with a date or just hanging out with friends. it's easy to meet and chat with people here without it being oppresively crowded like cubbyhole. it gets another star for having a great outdoor space with picnic style tables and cute school desks....this reminds me i haven't been in a while so i should do that soon. read more
