Szechuan Beef with fried rice
Brian B.

Back in the day, I use to frequent Gin's quite a bit. It was my go to on Sundays. I stopped going after I started noticing their poor inspection scores. Since they have improved vastly, I decided to give them another try. I placed my order for pickup. The interior didn't seem to have changed at all. My food wasn't quite ready, so after paying I had to sit for a few minutes. I ordered the Szechuan Beef lunch special with fried rice and an egg roll. The entree had a good flavor but had weird aftertaste. The rice was disappointing as it was cold and didn't have a lot of flavor. The best part of the meal was the egg roll and the hot oil. I prolly won't be back any time soon.

Sweet/sour Pork

Quick service, delicious tender sweet/sour pork bites even when reheated leftovers, flavorful fried rice with bits of onion, carrots and peas. Crispy and full of veggies egg roll. Large serving of red sweet sauce. Highly recommend!

Shrimp with lobster sauce, fried rice and crab rangoons

They have lunch specials every day, even on the weekends that include fried or white rice and eggrolls or crab Rangoon's and tea. I like the transparency and listening skills of the servers. They provide information on the menu and they ask for our preferences if we would like green onions on the soup, if we wanted wontons to crumble into i,t if we needed any spicy sauces, etc.. They have an upstairs and downstairs dining area so if you can't do stairs, you can opt for the other side. It is nice, dark and cool inside it is triple digits in Texas and so it is a purrfect cavelike coolness to have your lunch .

It's been years since I went to Gin, but we used to go there for lunch often when I worked nearby. Ate there today and it was just as good as I remembered. I had the pork with green beans and they were delicious. I am glad to see that the beef noodle soup is still on the menu--I'll order that again when the weather is cooler. The staff is wonderful--friendly and accommodating. And one of my favorite parts: it was quiet enough that our group could actually hear each other! We will be back.

Orange chicken

Food was good! The service was good also very attending, haven't been here in awhile and it was still so good! The inside is a little outdated with a weird smell but other than that will be coming here again.

Ask the Community - Gin Chinese Restaurant

Is this place still super dirty? What are their latest health scores?

It depends what you mean by "super dirty" LOL. The place will never be pretty and pristine. The building is old, and the facility landlord hasn't done a good job of keeping any of the stores in that shopping center maintained well. If you mean their… Read more

I ordered the crispy dumplings (pork) and spring rolls as appetizers, and the spicy noodle soup as my entree. My server came to take my order, and brought me the items as they were ready. The entree came out before the appetizers. The spicy noodle soup was spicy (as named) and it was good, but it was incredibly oily and the noodles were overcooked, so I didn't eat much of it. I would definitely recommend ordering this with rice, or taking it home and making your own. The dumplings and spring rolls were crispy, but nothing special. I did like the duck sauce they had -- I would have asked my server for more of it, but she was busy in the back or something, not sure. I wish she would've checked in on me a bit more during the visit so I could have gotten more napkins and sauce. The service was alright. I wish I would've gotten checked on a little bit more, but she was nice and helped me pack my noodles to go. Overall, this spot wasn't terrible, but if I had to choose, I'd probably try another place.

Each of the lunch specials come with crab rangoon, egg roll and soup (I chose egg drop soup). We had the Shrimp and Vegetables, Sesame Chicken, and Triple Delight. We noticed the decor had changed (yes, I said it had been many years) and it was quite nice! We were seated promptly and placed our drink order (tea came with lunch). We ordered Rangoon as a starter. The lunch specials came with soup and egg roll, and fried rice. DH ordered his litmus test dish for American style Chinese- General Tso chicken. The portion was generous. The sauce was tasty. The chicken pieces tasted like your average frozen nuggets tossed in sauce. It's that familiar "seasoning" to the chicken and coating- iykyk. Not bad at all, just not the best. He enjoyed his egg drop soup. I opted for Hunan Beef. The sauce was thicker than I prefer, with an almost gelatinous consistency. The hot and sour soup was nice, a little more sour than hot. We both thought the fried rice that came with lunch was a little bland. Maybe the entree version is better? Each special was under $10, and it's definitely a great value.

Walked in and waited for a few minutes before someone handed us menus and told us to sit wherever. Just handed us menus...in a kind of "just go sit down kinda way". Not real friendly. The appetizer we ordered (veggie steamed dumplings) came out with one less dumpling than promised on the menu. My wife's noodles were nothing special, as was my spicy/numbing pot. I felt my pot in particular, was over-loaded with huge chunks of veggies that could have been better chopped as to be more manageable. More chicken and beef in that chicken and beef pot, too, please ... The person waiting on us, if you could call it that, was not personable and could not have cared less about interacting. His drive by meal drop-offs were the epitome of antisocial. Probably won't return.

I have been to this restaurant several times which I did like. It rank higher than the other few places available in San Antonio. The service is always good and from observing I see a lot of Chinese families visiting and chit chatting with who seems to be the owner. I do like that a lot! It gives a positive sign about the restaurant itself The portions are huge! I ordered the whole chicken? Sichuan style. I asked if it is the whole chicken I don't know if language barrier lol she did the sign of no no with her hand. It is actually maybe equal to 2 chickens! Not complaining! I was very happy with it! I will keep on returning to try more things on the menu

It was the in between time of late lunch 2:30-3pm so we thought we would miss the Sunday afternoon church rush. The parking lot and restaurant was full but didn't let it scare us. Shrimp Shumai and pork bao buns were so good. My kids asked for seconds We also ordered the sweet and sour chicken, spicy eggplant/tofu, shrimp& broccoli and the combination fried rice.
