I have been coming to Gilbert's for a little over 10 years now. It seems they always the things the box box stores don't have. This is a hardware store the way hardware stores used to be. I come in here mostly for stem and diverter rebuilds for the old bath/shower systems in rental properties: they will rebuild the hot, cold and diverter stems while you wait. I have always been very pleased with their services and they also build screens for windows and replace screens if you bring them in. Overall, Gilbert's is a great hardware store with good pricing and very helpful employees. read more

Amazing service! 10/10!! Gilbert's is the reason why you NEED to support local shops. This hardware store is filled to the brim with everything you can think of for your home projects. The best part is the staff is incredibly friendly and very knowledgeable if you have any questions. A family member directed us to Gilbert's for a home repair issue in our laundry room. We stopped in around 9am on a Saturday and were immediately greeted by two kind women who helped fixed up a contraption for us. They also thoroughly explained how to install the product and let us know they'd be welcome to answer any questions we had if it didn't work out. A kind employee even offered to order me in a product that they didn't have stocked. You cannot beat that kind of service! The laundry tub has now been fixed with no issue. This mom and pop hardware store is a lifesaver. It has way more selection than Home Depot or Lowe's, and friendlier staff! I went to multiple locations of those two aforementioned big box stores and they didn't carry what I wanted. I stopped by Gilbert's, was helped by an associate, and within minutes she gave me the item I'd been searching for everywhere. There is no better hardware store anywhere! You are always greeted at the door and one if there knowledgable staff asks if you need help with anything. They offer ideas, tips and actually teach you how to do simpler tasks like replacing a cord or unplugging a clogged drain. my trip today was to get a modified phillips screw for an old cabinet hinge that they cut to size for me. What a great Hardware Store. I felt like I'd walked back in time with my Grandfather to a place he used to take me as a child growing up in rural Wyoming in the shadow of the Rocky Moubtains. You can tell they take great pride in this establishment. Clean, tidy, and well organized. It was like something you'd see in a Norman Rockwell painting and that isn't to say it was old and outdated. On the contrary they had exactly what I needed, they just managed to capture what I see as a disappearing part of our Americana. The folks at Gilbert's are fantastic. I'm handy enough to be dangerous, and these folks help and educate me every time. They are patient, knowledgeable, kind and understanding. Being on the border of Grosse Pointe, they understand older homes, and deal well with senile citizens trying to fix things on their own. They also help you fix things - as opposed to replacing - like a Home Depot. Went in to get a sink part for mom's sink. Was immediately approached and helped by a friendly salesperson. He found the piece immediately and we were at the cashier in less than two minutes. The staff continue to not wear masks correctly, and some not at all. They have NO sign on the door stating you must have on a mask to enter the store. But they do have a sign on the door stating that customers are not allowed to take pictures of the employees, because someone did take a picture of a staff person not wearing a mask and they posted it on Facebook. Then I walk in and there are three guys standing there with masks under their chins! There was also an employee who before the election I overheard telling a customer that she needed to vote for Trump! No wonder they don't want to wear masks! I like this place and live down the street and have been shopping there for 6 years. They have a good selection and friendly staff. I'm holding back stars for 2 reasons. First, you are not allowed to browse yourself and it makes me feel like they think I'm going to steal something. The staff is very knowledgeable but they hold your hand and if there are different choices for an item, they choose for you and quickly walk the items to the register. Two of my items today were found to be the wrong size when I got home- I would have liked to look through the other options while there. I also would have liked to go up and down the aisles without a sales guy breathing down my throat. I didn't buy some other items I could have used because I felt rushed. Second, they have a preferred contractor list and I am a licensed Michigan Residential Builder. Since I live down the street and have been shopping there for six years I inquired about getting on it but not expecting it to help business much. The owner Blair probably doesn't realize he offended me but right off the bat he said "no, you have to be in business a lonnggg time, like 5 years. I explained this was my 15th year (did I look like a bum or something?) and I have Angies List reviews if he wants to see them. "I AM Angies List and I don't refer WEIRD businesses like yours anyway" He says. I'm a carpenter and specialize in garage construction and repairs. Carpenters and builders are on his list. That just rubbed me the wrong way to treat me that way after I've been shopping there for six years paying higher prices to support his local business- How about giving back, Blair and support other local businesses. No people will not help you here, even a women carrying a door out by herself...had to ASK for someone to hold to open the door. Recently purchased a nearby home one month ago. During this time I have spent a minimum of $300.00 on misc. items at Gilbert's Hardware Needed a hollow $48.00 door cut down 1.25 inches--was promised completion in two days....5 days later I called, said person confirmed door was finished. Upon arrival, door was not finished. Employee directed me to a person named Blair, who then explained bottom of door would be hollow. I gave my permission to cut the door. They insured the door would be completed same day. At pick up I was charged $35.00 to cut 1.25" off of my door, said employee explained that door was not hollow At the bottom, which I already knew after checking the solid portion dimensions of the door. My complaint is that they charged me $35.00 for trimming 1.25 " off $48.00 door; promised a two completion, which took almost six days. I confirmed with Home Depot that they would have trimmed the door for free. To top it all off, NO ONE helped me with the door to my car. I had to request assistance for someone to hold the door open while I struggled by myself, to carry Ici out to my car. Ha!! As I stood in line waiting to pay, I witnessed another customer picking up a window which was not complete and sent to the back for more work. HORRIBLE SERVICE!! WILL NEVER GO BACK!! read more

When is the last time you were approached in a friendly manner immediately when you enter a store and offered help. Each time I go to Gilbert's Hardware, that's what happens. The store is always well staffed, they know their inventory, they give advice, and even have a list of handymen they recommend if the job is too big for yourself. Be EXTREMELY careful about hiring from their so called "preferred contractors" list. Insist on multiple outside references. Do not trust the list. The pair we hired, I'll call them "Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum" as they insist on working as a team, overcharged for what they offered, made serious errors that damaged our historic home, then refused to fix their shoddy work. If you call to complain, Gilbert's will only tell you that these "contractors" don't work for them. Gilbert's of course makes money from their "contractors" by stipulating that they buy their supplies from, you guessed it, GILBERT'S. What a racket. read more

Gilbert's is the best hardware store on the Eastside. The customer service is crazy good. The staff will find what you need in a matter of seconds. If they don't have an item they will direct you to a competitor that may stock it. The prices are slightly higher than Lowe's / Home Depot, but you will never get Gilbert's customer service at any big box store. After all your time is valuable too. Get what you need fast and finish your project. A few years ago my son needed some supplies for a physics project. Two of Gilbert's employees helped my son and wife locate everything he needed to complete the project. For a purchase that probably cost less than twenty bucks, two employees helped my wife and son. Gilberts has long been the best service hardware store in the area. Small, great stock, easy to navigate and good customer service. This has changed. As of now, 10/8/2020 their sales people are no longer required to wear masks while waiting on customers. Going into any of their narrow, poorly ventilated aisles with a sales associate is risking your life. I had that experience just recently and, of course, was wearing a mask. When I asked him why he was not wearing a mask, he said, "Thirteen hours wearing a mask gets really long.". Nobody has to wear a mask for 13 hours, and moreover, they can have them around their necks and put them on quickly when a customer approaches. Later, I called back and talked with the manager. He told me that they had not been wearing masks for quite a while and than none of THEM had gotten sick. Gee, Thanks! Additionally, he made some lame reference to the new law - perhaps the supreme court ruling against the governess? He fluffed me off. DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE IF YOU WANT TO STAY COVID FREE!
