This is a very early review, but absolutely warranted! Ron used his trusty connections and facilitated his roof guy to come fix my center patio, which was leaking and botched by my soon to be fired contractor. One phone call and Ron got his guys to come to my house the very next day and did a fantastic job. Normally, it's very difficult to get a roof guy to respond that quickly, but because Ron was calling in a favor, they started working the next day! AMAZING! A total 180 compared to my previous contractor who has made a lot of empty promises and abandoned this project multiple times spanning over a period of several months! But let's focus more on the positive, ie, Ron. He is a straight shooter, very responsive, extremely knowledgeable, very by the book, trustworthy and honorable. I found Ron by reaching out to a SF Realtor, Kevin Ho via his YouTube Channel. I will update or add another review as we continue to work on my center patio. These folks did a job for me and I couldn't have been more pleased. Most importantly, the work accomplished what I wanted done with room to spare -- more than anything because of Rudy's skill (if not artistry) at what he does. Throughout the experience, I found the whole team to be solid, conscientious, and reliable. I could see how much effort they were putting into getting things done correctly, even checking up on things afterward. It was pretty clear that they would have tweaked or redone the work if necessary. Also, if ever anybody didn't arrive at the appointed time, it was because they were EARLY, not late! Gil Contstruction & Assc. just finished renovating one of our home bathrooms. We could not be happier with the results or the process. Things we especially liked: 1. Even though our job was relative small, it was a complete re-hab down to wall studs & subfloor and we felt like we got white glove treatment all the way through. Put yourself in the hands of Tony Park (650) 222-2433) and all will be taken care of. 2. You get professionals during all critical phases of work. (When it is time for electrical you get a real live electrician that has years of experience and knows what he is doing and knows all the electical codes). Ditto for the plumbing, waterptroffing, tile work, etc. 3. All of these people are dedicated to your satisfaction. When they see something that they believe could be better they will make a suggestion. Tony Park especially is very good at communication. He keeps you fully appraised at all times and he will not leave you hanging. As far as he is concerned, the job is not done until the owner is satisfied. I've known Ron Gil for 10 years and he has done multiple jobs on our condominium building in SF including siding work and a seismic retrofit as well as work on our Oakland Hills (Montclair Home) which is outside of Gil Construction's service area which he did as a favor to me and my wife. I needed a contractor to fix a leaking and rotting terrace at my mother's house in San Francisco. I received a referral to Gil Construction from my realtor and the results exceeded my highest expectations. The best aspect of working with Gil Construction was the quality of all the people I dealt with. The team of people, all highly skilled and easy to work with, contributed to the successful completion of my project. This high quality team is what you would hope for when you contract with a construction company. My first contact was with Mary, the office manager for Gil Construction. Her fast and thorough response to my initial and subsequent inquires is one big factor for me in deciding to go with Gil Construction. I worked with Mary on billing, scheduling, change order approvals, getting questions answered, and resolving various issues. She seemed to be always available and returned emails almost instantaneously. Mary made communication and resolving any issues with the company fast and easy. Ron Gil, the owner of the company, came out to assess the situation and write up an estimate. He is experienced, personable, knowledgeable, and honest. I experienced the same professionalism, competency, and customer orientation when I worked with Ron's partner, Tony, on permits & scheduling. The cost is reasonable and what I would expect to pay for a high quality terrace replacement. The construction crew was a joy to work with. The foreman, Rene, communicated frequently with me to give me the status of the repairs and to talk over any change orders. He and his partner, William, are both skillful in their craft. The quality of their finished terrace reconstruction is first-rate and exceeded all my expectations. The deck specialist, Armando, also gets high marks for his personable nature, expertise on decks and water leaks, and the high quality of his work in installing our wooden deck. Other workers were called upon as required for other aspects of the job. As my elderly mother lived in the house during the month and a half construction period. I gave Rene full access to the house during this time. Over the seven weeks, the construction crew was trustworthy, respectful, pleasant, and completed the job with very little disruption for my mother. The quality of the people makes all the difference in a construction project. Gil Construction appears to have all the right people, from the owners, to the office manager, to the foreman, to the construction specialists. I was referred to Ron from my Realtor (Betty Taisch). We had just bought a nearly original Lakeshore home and wanted to update the kitchens, baths, floors, and remove a non-load bearing wall. After receiving multiple bids for the job, Ron's bid won based not on being the cheapest, but being the most thorough and itemized as possible. What most homeowners don't realize is, with most bids, it's not what they list, its the upsets they don't list. Ron brought in several specialized sub-contractors in order to provide a very comprehensive quote. This is not something the other GC's did. Ron maintained accessibility throughout the entire job, and his foremen Rudy and Rene ensured progress, safety, and trust. Gil Construction finished our job in 3 months and transformed our house in to a home. Fast forward a year after Gil Construction had completed our initial renovation, we hired Ron for a window retrofit replacement to mute some road noise and increase energy efficiency. Separately, he even saved our home from serious damage when we discovered two roof leaks into the garage and living space. His roofing specialist, Armando, is a God send. Even in an emergency situation (this during El Nino), Ron expedited Armando's services within a few hours. Gil Construction is really wonderful to work with. They are effective, efficient, and flexible; they know how to get the job done right the first time; and they're cost sensitive without cutting corners on quality. We have used them for several projects; the most recent, completed this summer, involved repairs to subfloors and indoor stairwells. They did a great job and even finished their work ahead of schedule. Gil Construction also works with a carpet installer, Paul Ondricek, who is really great. His business isn't listed on yelp so I'm going to plug him here. He did wonderful work on a really difficult installation at a great price. I had a 750 square foot garage (new construction) that needed sheet rock, taping, texturing, window and door trim and paining in a hurry. My original contractor flaked; my friend recommended "Gil Construction in Millbrae. I called Gil Construction, Tony Park came out the next day, I told him what I needed. Next day I had an estimate, three days later the work started. Two weeks later, the work was complete. If "Yelp" had ten stars, Gil Construction would get ten stars. Their contractors, were cautious, on time, cleaned up and did an outstanding job with beautiful results. If I ever need a contractor, I'm calling Gil Construction period. read more

I met Ron Gil of Gil Construction after 2012's late winter rains turned up leaks under my front door and at one corner of my living room picture window. Another contractor visited before Ron, and was pessimistic that either my picture window or door could be salvaged. He estimated it would cost $5,800 to replace the window, and $2,200 to replace the door. Ron didn't think either the window or door would require replacement. He showed me how to do a leak test with a hose to isolate the front door leak, and felt that caulking would fix the picture window ... and he was right. The window doesn't leak anymore. I'm $5,800 richer! Impressed, I contracted with Gil Construction to handle a much larger dry rot problem under the stucco. The job took close to a week, and required a permit. Ron's crew was prompt, friendly, diligent, and did everything they said they were going to do. I also contracted with Gil Construction afterward for other jobs. I've never worked in the construction trades, and can't judge their work as a professional might. But I have socked away many grown-up years dealing with other professionals in fields I don't know well, and think I'm reasonably good at sniffing out the dishonest and incompetent. Ron is certainly honest. He has had many, many chances to 'upsell' me that he hasn't taken advantage of; if anything, I have had to lobby for more expensive repairs, as he seems to want to save me money. He also seems to know the ins and outs of San Francisco's houses very well. He said he's been in business here for twenty years. On one occasion, I wasn't entirely satisfied with one repair. I discussed this with Ron on the phone, and he sent out another crew to take another look at the work. They wound up spending more than half a day here, and I wasn't charged for the labor. I had to call Ron back to insist that he at least charge me for the additional materials. If I hadn't called, he would have thrown them in for free. The own downside: eventually news about this company will spread, and it will get tougher to book them. One staffer with a genius for tracing leaks -- Hugo -- is already tied up most of the time. read more

Ron and his crew always did right by me. They are a solid, down to earth, construction company that got the job done and made tremendously difficult things look easy. I trusted Gil Construction with everything from foundation work, to framing, to a bathroom remodel. With each project they exceeded my expectations time and time again. None of the projects were straightforward, my house was a funky old Victorian where everything was non-standard and wonky. It was very clear from the way they approached the projects that they knew what they were doing. They were not the cheapest, but the small extra expense was certainly worth it. Being able to sleep at night and relax knowing that they had the project under control was worth every penny. Gil Construction recently completed concrete sidewalk and curb replacement work in response to a Notice to Repair from the DPW. The scope affected multiple properties, ours and an adjacent neighbor. The pricing was competitive, the concrete work was done carefully, started and completed on schedule, and with a minimum amount of disruption to garage access. It was very easy to set up an estimate appointment with Ron Gil. Mary Hernandez, the office manager, was always quick to respond to phone calls and emails. They are flexible, and offered the option that I could pick up the Street Improvement Permit myself from the Bureau of Street-Use and Mapping on Market St to save a few bucks. I'd recommend this company for residential projects like this. Coincidentally, I found that Gil Construction had done the complete kitchen and multiple bathroom renovation on our residence before we owned it. The workmanship is top notch, some of the best I have seen. read more

After the huge rains last winter, I had leaks all over the south wall of the four story building I own. My tenants spoke of soft plaster around their windows and I saw streaks of water coming from the top corner of my living room. My hardwood floors were buckling...in a word, it was a mess. After 3 false starts with other people, Ron came to look around. He inspired so much confidence; he clearly knew how to help me. His bid was very reasonable. When, during the project, it became clear that more work needed to be done, he handled the subs. He also ensured a connection with an excellent house painter, Rich DeMartini. I cannot tell you the sense of relief I had at the end of the project when I knew the work was done, and done well. As I look forward to some "fun" projects, Gil Construction will be my go-to contractor. I recommend him and his company without reservation. read more

Professional, moderate rates, knowledgeable, and above all - responsive. Ron has done two jobs for us over the years, and both times we've been really pleased. The first was a concrete and drainage job, which led us to hire him for a pretty major foundation/remodel job a few years later. I've worked with a lot of contractors, and Ron and his crew stand out as really wonderful, especially in contrast to the norm. Gil Construction isn't the cheapest, but they're not the most expensive either, and they really know what they're doing, from building to city codes and the permit process. We had a relatively simple, but an involved project that I had procrastinated getting it done for years, mainly because I've been dreading finding a contractor to deal with it. Thanks to Yelp, I came across Gil Construction, and after few bids from various places, I contracted the work with them. I cannot comment on the cost comparison, as the bids I received were so varied in degree and scope so it was all over the place, but I found their proposal to be the most straight-forward, cost reasonable, and primarily, I really liked how they handled any questions I had with the project in a thorough and professional manner, (and putting up with my various, "hmm.. may be I should have this looked at while we're at it..." scenarios), I went with them. I am SO GLAD I did. I met with Tony, the project manager, several times before and during the project, and he was always on time. So were their subcontractors. None were ever late. I found that to be quite impressive. Work was neat (it involved taking out concrete and putting in new stuff, and if you ever worked with concrete, you know how messy that can be!), workers were all pleasant and friendly, and very competent. They swept after themselves at the end of the day every day. I was very impressed how clean the work was. I was especially impressed with the quality of the subcontractors they brought in to get the job done. Each and every one were neat, clean, competent, friendly, and prompt. When we ran into potential problem ("hmm.. is the foundation stable if we take this concrete out!?") instead of ignoring it and plowing on just so they can complete their work and get paid, they took the time to assess the situation to make sure their work will not cause further problem, before moving ahead. One cannot ask for this kind of peace of mind.. it's bad enough coordinating subcontractors, but having all of them be so professional was a wonderful experience. I was grateful that what I procrastinated for so long had been fixed so professionally, and to be working with a professional staff like Tony and his crew. I have couple other "big projects" that will also need to be dealt with, and when the time comes, I will definitely be giving Gil Construction a call again. Highly, highly, recommended! read more

My Parents and Brother have used Gil Construction on large home remodel and repair projects. My neighbor and I hired him to replace a leaning retaining wall and fence. Ron's quote was second lowest in price. But of note: much more detailed in his description of the scope of work. We went with him based on my family's experiences. Ron and Company delivered! On the promised start day truck, crew and equipment were at the curb promptly at 8AM. All equipment and materials both in and out, had to be hand carried through my home. Even though I had prepped, the crew went to the extra effort of moving furniture, and protecting the floors. They also protected the plants! Most amazing they swept and vacuumed their way out of my house when done. This was a small-ish but "heavy" construction project completed in less than two days! After an offer I made on a house outside the city was accepted, I had four days to get my SF Victorian condo staged and ready to sell. My realtor recommended Ron and he came out right away to give me an estimate on what needed doing (touch up painting, wall repair from a prior roof leak that had been fixed, stair and baseboard repair, door replaning doors and other minor detail work), and what was best left undone. He gave good, solid advice, a fair (not inexpensive) estimate ... and had a crew there and working like crazy the next day (nice guys, all of them). But the five stars comes from how Ron acted when I called upset about some problems/ misunderstandings on the paint work and some stair refinishing ... he had a great attitude, was on the job site right away, switched out one crew member and had his guys working late on a Saturday night to make sure everything was done exactly as it needed to be exactly when it needed to be. He's just a really great, honest person ... easy to talk to, realistic and up front about costs, responsive and fair, and it's clear he really cares about ensuring customer happiness and high quality workmanship. Anyone can be gracious when things are going perfectly, but grace, charm and incredible responsiveness when things aren't going so hot ... what more could you ask for. read more
