They have such a stellar reputation that I first worried their excellent reputation would mean a high price tag - but their costs were reasonable and very fair. Alex, our Project Manager, did an excellent job helping us find paint colors, patiently helping us look through samples and figure out what would look best for our house. Submitting this review after reading several recent negative reviews of work done by Gikas. We have used Gikas for several projects over a period of years. Most recently a basement overhaul to use the space as a social/entertaining area. As with earlier projects, we are totally pleased with all aspects of their work. They tiled the entire floor area, painted the walls and installed new lighting. They even installed a large wall TV. While I have no reason to doubt the negative reviews, that has never been our experience. I would not hesitate to contact them for projects in the future. read more

I went with Gikas to paint my house and complete some minor carpentry work based on their reviews, references, proposal, and price, which was quite a bit lower than other bids I received. They were nice enough to deal with, but unfortunately, the quality of the work is not as expected. The painting work done by my previous contractor lasted 12 years, but Gikas's work has failed after less than 6 years. Paint is peeling and cracking, nail heads are rusting through, and caulk was used in places where it should not be applied, such as where shingles meet the roofing material. This does nothing but trap water and lead to premature rotting of the shingles. They used a mixed bag of wood to replace trim...some was green pressure treated, while the other wood was pine with very large knots that have bled through the paint due to not being properly sealed. There were other issues that are too numerous to mention in this type of review, so suffice to say, I will be using my prior contractor to paint the house this time, regardless of price differential. read more

Repairs to my house were delayed by a month. The first date that was set the workers nevered showed. The second date , only one worker arrived, and did not speak a word of english......and wasnt sure why he was sent. The third date, when they work was finally performed, the workers showed up three hours late. read more

We have had the most awful and bizarre experience with this place. The first time we made an appointment they cancelled it the day off and never showed up for the rescheduled date. A year later, we tried again and called them over for some major work on our home including roofing needs and landscaping/repaving on the house. A guy came over and acted like we didn't need work done when we desperately did. He kept saying "sure, sure", and hardly even looked at the areas that needed attention. We never got a quote even though we called 4 times after the visit. I guess you guys really don't care about what probably would have been over 20k in work. Really rude and pathetic. read more

I am giving this rating based upon limited interaction with Gikas. I called last week to request a quote on a kitchen cabinet painting job. I was told "we will have one of our estimators get in touch with you". I called again on Saturday after going days without hearing from anyone. The girl who answered the phone was not very pleasant. I asked her if she even had a record of my initial call and was told "I don't know I don't have that information" in a snippy attitude like I was bothering her. If this is the way they act BEFORE imagine what type of service you would get AFTER they have your money. Found another company. read more

We had Gikas Roofing & Gutters replace our house and garage roofs in Montclair in February 2023. They did an excellent job, although this was a large, complicated job. On the house roof, two layers of asphalt shingles and a layer of cedar shingles had to come off, and then some insulation, new plywood decking, and new shingles installed. The roof has a flat part, three dormers, and a gable. The workers were fast and courteous, worked carefully, and cleaned up every day and at the end of the job. Communication with the owner, George Mihalis, and his foreman, Masterson, was good. The roofs were done in three days. Some gutters (mainly on the garage) were done quickly and well on the fourth day. I got estimates from a total of 6 companies, based in Montclair, nearby, and farther away, and George was by far the best at listening, suggesting reasonable solutions, and following up in writing. And his crew executed the job exactly the way it was written up in the estimate. Drew Knapp (973-783-3226) was very helpful in setting up this job, and in advising me on this and other projects. We had our kitchen, living room, mud room, and powder room painted just last week. Hernane and his team, Johnny and Julio, made it so simple! It was a totally painless week. I originally thought we should all stay somewhere else for the week, but these guys were so considerate and careful. When they left each evening, everything was back in place so that I could cook a meal for dinner. The work itself is beautiful and meticulous - not a detail was missed. The price was more than fair, too - we had an estimate from another local company that was about the same amount but did not include the ceiling. Called at night about an urgent roof leak. I was initially impressed because there is an answering service. Then, the next morning at 7:59 AM I received a text from George asking what is a good time for him to stop by. Fantastic service, right? Gikas just completed a significant partial remodel of the interior of my house. Hardwood floors stained and refinished on one level, new hardwood floors on the other. Some ceilings repaired, one completely replaced, entire interior painted. New recessed lighting. The job did take longer than expected due to some unanticipated issues (requiring more work). Contract price didn't change. Workers were courteous and thorough. Job was done quite well. This was the 3rd time I've used Gikas for projects, and this was by far the biggest job. I bought a new condo and needed someone to paint. I just had back surgery and had no idea who to hire. I mentioned this to my dear friend who used Gikas to do her entire Essex Fells house- inside and out. They were very happy & even added crown molding inside that looks gorgeous. So I called and Christine met me at the condo and went over everything. Because my friend referred me, they started the next day. Christine was so knowledgeable it was quite impressive. She was so kind and compassionate to my situation and the fact I just had major surgery and need to be out of my current condo by December 15th. I would, without the shadow of a doubt, refer this company to all of my friends and family. They do just about any project you could need. Working Gikas has been a great experience. As first homeowners, we were very selective and particular in finding a contractor we could trust. When George came out to see the scope of work he understood exactly what we wanted, and offered options that were reasonable. Alex was our project manager and he was very responsive and flexible. We were especially appreciative of Alex following up to ensure we were on the same page throughout the entire process. Once his team started the work, we were so happy we chose them. The team was very polite and asked questions to make sure we were happy with the final product. We had exterior siding repaired, gutters replaced, interior drywall water damage fixed and repainted, a new exterior door installed, and front door restored/ repainted. Nightmare roof replacement. Cost a fortune and they did a sub-par job (left nails and a costco 36-pack of water on the roof). As well as a mess around the entire house (never cleaned up). Customer service was non-existent. Didn't take responsibility for the shotty work. Then 2 months later after a heavy day of rain we had a major leak in a room we've never had a leak before (prior to this new roof). I thought I was done with them but now I need them to fix their crappy work and I know I'll have to continue to deal with bad service until this gets fixed. Paid for the name since they seemed to have a good rep, but totally not reputable. The one thing you pay for with a new roof is no leaks and now we have one after the first significant rain. read more

We recently bought a badly neglected townhouse in a 55 plus community in Woodland_Park NJ. A neighbor highly recommended Gikas. They responded quickly , did a walk through, prepared a proposal and started demolition immediately. The field supervisor Alex stepped in and took complete control of the project which included Gikas staff and all of the other licensed sub contractors. I recently hired Gikas P&C to restore cracked plaster ceilings in two highly visible rooms in our home. The first crew was timely in both proposal and start of work. There were issues with the finish. A second crew was dispatched, headed by Alex. Alex heard my concerns, made the necessary changes and within 2 hours my ceiling and moldings looked good as new. They said George was not responding to them. I understand the rudeness from the receptionist apparently if the owner can behave poorly what can we expect from his staff. Buyers be aware. Gikas not only did not do the job right and used the wrong paint, the manager also lie to cover it up. Summer 2019, contracted with Gikas to paint the entire exterior of the house in Montclair. The contract included carpentry works to repair/replace the damaged wood siding and column base. To my surprise, the painters just started painting the primer coating without cleaning and properly preparing the surface. We noticed that they were painting the primer before doing any carpentry works to repair and replace the damaged wood work, the team leader kept saying the carpentry work would be done soon. However, the carpentry works were not done at all when they almost finished the primer coating. When we question them again because it does not make sense to finish the primer coat, then replace the damaged wood boards then paint the replaced wood board after, the team leader kept saying it would be done soon. No carpentry works were done before the painter wanted to start to put on the finish coat of paint. The contract specifically promised using the top of the line Sherwin Williams exterior paint -Emerald. However, when we checked the paint containers, we realized the painter was using regular Benjamin Moore paint. When we questioned the team leader, he insisted they were using the Sherwin William paint as specified but just put that in a Benjamin Moore container when applying it. When we complained to the manager, he went to the job site and sent us photos showing couple of clearly old Sherwin William 5 gallons container as evidence. To confirm my suspicion, I asked our tenant to go out to look at the container including the lid which have the seller's label of the lid. When my tenant went out to check, they threw away the lids. My tenant went picked up the lid and sent me a photo of it. Sure, it was not Sherwin William paint. When confronted with the evidence, the manager finally admitted that they were not using the paint they promised. We terminated them. Gikas left behind the empty paint cans in the side yard after picked up their ladders. We picked Gikas first because it is our home town neighbor. However, the lying and cover up was the deal breaker as we did not belief that was an honest mistake. It seems they subcontracted the job to other painters during the busy season. No longer trust their words, we hired another reputable painter to finish the job knowing it increased the total costs. read more

Just before the holidays Gikas completed demolishing and rebuilding a two-story deck for my house in Montclair. They were able to take something that was the worst part of my house and make it something remarkable.
