I discovered this restaurant several years ago while on a trip to Gulf Shores/Orange Beach and it's been a must-visit on all of our subsequent trips. The buffet is full of all sorts of delicacies and I always leave fat and happy. The unique setting only adds to the meal. Highly recommended!

It was our first and last trip to the Gift Horse Restaurant! The building was ever bit as old and historic as the advertisement says. The history is amazing but that's where the amazing stops! It's buffet style with fish and shrimp brought to you table. I believe the food was leftover from lunch. Some of the containers only had a few spoon full left. I was adventurous and tried a little of everything! Boy was I sorry, one dish after another. Dry, cold or just down right awful is about all I can say! I'm just glad a took a small amount of each item. There was No way I was going back for seconds! The fish and shrimp were good, but not $27 worth of good. $2.95 for each can coke. The homemade desserts were worse that the buffet if that is possible. They too looked and tasted old and store bought. Now the service was very pleasant and welcoming but that the best I can say about this place. Save yourself a lot of disappointment and money! Don't go to the Gift Horse Restaurant!

We had to wait about 15mins for a table which was fine bc it was dinner time and it's a popular spot. We sat down and it wasn't 2 mins when the Famous rolls came out. The young man who threw them was super nice and I swear he should be in the MLB, he's got an arm on him I tell ya. Honey caught his roll with no issues. I caught mine straight in the chest and it exploded. It looked a little worse for the wear but BOY WAS IT GOOD!!!! Our server was super friendly and got everything out to us quickly. There were various servers with fried okra, macaroni and tomato's, black eyed peas, and other amazing sides. My only complaint was that they wouldn't serve me from the kids menu. I had a medical procedure that doesn't allow for me to eat much and the server said she wasn't allowed to serve me from that menu. Aside from that, everything else was amazing and we had a blast. We loved it!!!

Our waiter Holden promptly greeted us and brought us drinks. He gave us a few minutes to look over the menu and we finally decided on country fried steak. A gentleman came around with fried okra before our meals came out and it was delicious. This was our first time trying okra and it did not disappoint. Our meals came out pretty quickly and we sat waiting to have rolls "throwed" at us. My husband spotted the roll thrower, put up his hand, and had a roll "throwed" at him that he ended up partially catching with his hand and his chest. I was slow raising my hamd and had to wait for my roll. Surprisingly, I caught the roll. It was soft, but heavy. We then waited for the girl to come around with the apple butter and molasses. We each got a scoop of apple butter and proceeded to enjoy our rolls. We also had the fried potatoes with onions which was the best side second only to the rolls themselves. The sides with our entree - french fries, corn bread, peaches- were okay, but I could do without them. The mashed potatoes and gravy were a good pairing with the country fried steak. The real winners were the "throwed" rolls, friend potatoes with onions, and the okra. Holden was wonderful and attentive. He provided a box to take my leftovers, offered us togo drinks even though all we ordered was water, and went back and got me togo silverware so I could enjoy my leftovers in the car. I don't know if we would go out of our way to return, but it was a fun experience and we enjoyed most of what we ordered.

One of the standout touches is the little shop inside, filled with all kinds of great finds--soaps, mists, lotions, and even kitchen accessories. It's a fun bonus that makes the experience feel a bit more unique. We came in with a group of 16, and they were able to accommodate us in a separate space across from the main area, which worked out really well. If you're planning a visit with a large group, I'd definitely recommend calling ahead. Major shoutout to our server--she handled splitting the check six ways like a pro. Everything came out correctly and fairly close together, which is no small feat with a group our size. I ordered the mahi sandwich, and it was delicious. The bun was perfectly buttered, and the fish itself was flavorful and well-prepared. They also offer a salad bar if you're looking for something lighter. Prices are on the higher side, but that's pretty standard for seafood. Some dishes were served whole--bone-in and all--which caught a few people in our group off guard, but to me, that's usually a sign of freshness. The food did take a bit of time to come out, but given the size of our party, it was understandable. Overall, I really enjoyed our visit and would happily come back.

I felt he was being sarcastic but other than that he was fine. All the staff we encountered were nice. Mom and I ordered the fried shrimp. I love shrimp so it was a no brainer for me. He sold my mom on it since they have the best fried shrimp in the gulf (that's actually on the wall too). My sister got the grouper special. Food came out quickly. We loved our food. Coleslaw was good and you got a good portion size. My sister said her grouper was seasoned well and fried perfectly. Bad: They fried the stuffed crab shells, looked like toasted ravioli from St. Louis. Over cooked and dry. Chicken tender appetizer was a nice portion size but tasted awful. We think they needed to change their grease. The chicken was decent on inside but bad oil soaked breading and made it inedible. If you want your tea or soda to taste good you might want to order water. Our drinks were watery and had too much ice. Cola was see through, sweet tea very weak and watery. Ambiance: if it's cool enough to eat outdoors do so. Inside is a dreary grey with black tables and overall feeling of depression it's so dark. If you are getting a steak they seem to do that well. Otherwise would not recommend.

It's the food folks go there for. The oysters were fresh and served in a simple appealing way. The fish was white and firm and delicious. The grilled shrimp they are famous for do not have a savory flavor, tastes more like they were grilled with honey on them. We were not expecting that at all. We did not like the 30 dollars worth of sweet shrimp. It does come in very generous portion if you like that type of flavor. Hush puppies were pretty darn good, light, nicely seasoned with good flavor. The Cole slaw was excellent. All portions were generous. Overall they are friendly, the service is personable and efficient! Ambiance is that of a local diner style, not fancy just comfortable. We liked everything but the sweet grilled shrimp. We are from the north and maybe it is just a southern style we aren't familiar with or used to consuming. The gumbo is pretty good too.
