Had a good experience. If you plan on bringing anyone under 18 they will also need a picture id of some kind. School id or library card will work as long as it has their name and a picture on it, no exceptions!!! Other than that everything went well. Range is adequate, but not fancy which is just fine with me. Guys in office were pleasant enough to deal with. The staff is very friendly and very helpful. They've been under new ownership for a couple of years now, and some of the complaints here seem to be about the old ownership. ..one of the few places with long rifle ranges in the area (up to 200m). The binoculars I brought were not enough to see my placement at distance, and the staff noticed and helped me out at no charge - giving me a high visibility "lightly used" target, and checking with their spotting scope to help me dial it in. Will absolutely go back - they already earned a repeat customer. My husband and I came here to zero our new rifles, and it was a really pleasant experience. The two 'old guys' who were running the counter were very humble but serious men. You never really know what you're going to get when you go to a gun range, and these two were very safety conscious, direct, and sincere. I felt safer because of their actions, and honestly that's everything you want from a gun range. I can see how some people with ego problems may be offended by strict rules, but I personally would feel more comfortable bringing newbies here rather than anywhere else. The range itself is also strangely idyllic, if a little rustic. There's a river back behind the lane of trees that marks the back boundary, so there were butterflies and caterpillars and wasps flitting about; some long legged water birds would fly above us sometimes. The whole firing line stopped for about five minutes so a cat could wander itself across the field. It was really peaceful. Check your ego at the door and just have a nice time. Living in Kaufman since January, I've discovered that there's no local range available, so I'll be checking out Mesquite, Terrell, and the surrounding communities. Lived on the South side of Richland Chambers Lake for almost 12 years with several friends who had their own ranges set up on their land. Some were extremely well thought out and equipped. read more

The man who works the check in desk is rude and their range rules are ridiculous. You can only have one gun on the line at a time and the rest have to stay in your vehicle. If you want to shoot another gun, you have to take the previous gun to your car, get a new one and walk all the way back. I brought my 15 year old niece with me and he pointed out that she as under age. I said "Yes, sir... I'm going to teach her today". He rolled his eyes and said "Well, you just better be sure to supervise her.".... like I'm going to just let her run across the firing line or something. If you shooters haven't checked out this gun range in the last few months, you owe it to yourself to take another look. Under new management by a couple of real nice guys. about every 30 minutes the range master declares a cease fire ( going cold). Anyone who wants to go for the walk does so at this time. Once everyone has returned, Range master declares going hot is. The shooting starts back up. I have checked several ranges From Dallas to Greenville. Just my opinion, but I think this one is right on target. Their calendar year membership is only $7.00 The other ranges I looked into wanted $25. I only found one other that even had a 200yd range Shoot for the day all day for $20.00 Change range and get out another gun. Just tell the Range Master so he can put your Breech Lock Quick Change Bushings card in the new slot Ranges include 10 and 25 pistol and 50, 100 and 200 yard for rifles. You must qualify at the 100yd range to shoot at the 200. It's not hard. Just proves your guns are sighted in. So bottom line is nobody I've found in the last 2 years can beat their price. Was an amazing experience at the range, it's been a while since I went to go shooting and the guy at the desk was super friendly and the prices were reasonable. And the rules are pretty straight forward so nimrods don't mess it up for others. When it gets busy he I redacta with his customers and helps out in any way he could. $7 for the ticket which is yearly and $20 daily when you go and shoot plus a free target. Very solid range and I most defiantly will be coming back to break in a few more guns! read more

I have been going to Gibson range since 2006 when I moved to Mesquite From FT Hood, back when the original owner( A WWII Vet) owned the place. Now his son and daughter own it. The rates are reasonable . I shoot all of my firearms there with no problems. After 20 years as a 11Bravo infantry platoon sergeant, this range is home to me. Bring what you need, they do take debit cards and they do have some ammo for sale. I bring my own chairs, cooler , and gun equipment. If you have a legal suppressor , you are allowed to shoot with it. My wife and I have never had any issues with this family owned range. If you can't stand the heat of the day or the rules of this small business then go to the fancy Frisco Gun Club and pay an arm and a leg to shoot in short ranges with air conditioning and have flunky instructors grabbing at your wife's or daughters. Gibson is a true John Wayne range, meaning no frills just hot metal and dirt. Leave your snowflakes to melt at home. read more

I used the range to fire my rifle and pistol for the first time. Hours as of 9-11-13: Closed Monday and Friday. Open Tu,Wed,Thur,Sat. and Sunday from 10am to 5pm Rates: One time range fee is $7.00/year then $15/day for the use of the range (you get one target with that) *for the 200 yard range you have to pay an extra $10. An additional target is included. CASH ONLY!!!!! (even for ammo) No shotguns or AK Pistols (I think you can shoot the 410 Judge pistol???) You CAN shoot full metal jackets even if a magnet sticks to the bullet or case. No Rapid fire (2-3 sec between rounds) Leave your guns and ammo in your vehicle while checking in the office. One gun on range at a time. You must leave other guns in vehicle. ****I had a problem with my rifle. I went in to tell the manger that my rifle jammed and that I was going to switch to my pistol. Well he asked what kind of rifle and went out and tried to fix it for me. Upon leaving he even gave me his recommendation for a good pistol to take the CHL with and his choice was confirmed by my local gun shop, and police. My time at Gibsons was very enjoyable. Never, ever again. I went to this range as it was the closest one that would allow me to shoot my surplus combloc ammunition on a 100m range. I was the only one there and greeted by a sour old lady with a dog that would not stop barking. Even though I adhered to every rule, asked permission to do *anything* (keep in mind that I was the only person at the place and still waited around ... sometimes for 10 minutes for a "cease fire" after asking if I could change my target). I followed all the rules, did not get kicked out like some of the other reviewers, but was treated like an intruder. Her attitude went beyond anything that I would call "rude" or "poor service"... the woman is downright mean. She is an angry, sour and permanently pissed-off person and no amount of polite "yes ma'am/ no ma'am", smiling or calm obedience changed that. It's not worth the 30min drive or the permission to shoot FMJ to be treated like complete crap. C.J.S. had it right... by far the worst range in DFW. I can't overstate how mean this woman was. I've done call center tech support and have never been treated with as much malice as she greets her customers. read more

Have never met a more biblically pig-headed and unreasonable proprietor in my career. I'm an audio engineer who was location scouting outdoor gun ranges for scientific research purposes, and this location was absolutely perfect; out of the way, quiet, no highway noise like the Garland location, and lots of room for reverb to travel to capture impulse responses. After quoting me a price of $10,000 to rent the facilities for the day, he informed me I would not be able to use recording equipment of any kind. Please do not support such incredibly stunning and arrogant backwoods ignorance. It makes me wonder what they are trying to hide if they are turning away a client who is willing to pay $10k a day to conduct research. read more

I have been here once before (about 25 years ago) and it was old then. However, as a former member of the Frisco gun club I needed a place to take my son to zero his new deer rifle and have a little fun with a few other guns. I read the reviews and I will confess I was a little concerned but I knew I wanted a place that was outdoors and where we wouldn't be rushed. I knew the prices going in so I wasn't surprised. It is $22 for first timers. Anyone capable of writing a review on Yelp (Karl B) is smart enough to know the prices before you get there. When we arrived Chuck (the owner) had us each read a printed copy of the range safety rules. Two pages of large print that can be read in under a minute. The rules are simple, crystal clear and completely reasonable. Every range everywhere follows nearly identical rules. Also, leave your guns in your vehicle until you are checked in as no guns are allowed in the office. This is also completely reasonable. We were checked in by Chuck who was polite and professional. I think some customers may have an unrealistic expectation of customer service. Most people want to get on the range and start shooting and Chuck understands this. As far as the actual facilities, they have a 25, 50, 100 and 200 yard line. My son and I were put next to another gentleman and his two sons. At first I wondered why he would put us close together when it was just the five of us. But I soon realized that it was easier for him to view us. He kept us under constant observation but was never intrusive and only spoke to us when we spoke to him. When we did he was friendly and helpful. As a side note, part of the experience of shooting is getting outdoors and meeting new people and making new friends. I really want to thank the other guests for letting my son shoot a couple of their World War Two era rifles. He really enjoyed himself which is what matters the most. In the end it is about the experience. If you want to shoot at a good range that isn't overpriced or overcrowded this is the place. It has everything you need. Experienced shooters will love it. Inexperienced or high maintenance shooters probably won't. read more

TLDR- overpriced, poor but not terrible customer service, selectively enforced rules. only stays in business because it has a 200 yd line and allows FMJs. Avoid if possible, grit your teeth and minimize time with owner if you go. Has a 25,50,100,200 yard line, FMJ ammo is allowed, and it's outdoors- those are all the good things, and also the only reasons why anyone would want to come here . I came here recently because I wanted a chance to shoot past 100 with my rifle. I was informed by the owner that that costs extra money and I wouldn't be able to do it my first time- these rules were not written down. Range fees are 22 bucks for the first time and 15 subsequently but I won't come back. The owner is not extremely hostile or openly antagonistic as some reviews state, but is extremely standoffish and makes you feel unwelcome. I get the feeling he would've found a reason to hate me if I spoke to him for more than a couple minutes. He also seems to selectively enforce rules. For example, rule 1 is no SKS or AR15 type rifles (which is ridiculous: i would say the AR15 is the most common rifle in Texas), however two gentlemen showed up with AR15's and begun plinking away for an hour with no problems. The owner stays inside the shop all day and does not supervise anything going on in the range, only coming out every half hour to call a cease-fire. read more

I have heard pretty bad reviews about this place but I decided to go anyway to see for myself. Went on a Friday, found the old man Mr. Gibson who was plenty helpful and welcoming as it was my first time there. We went through the range rules, which I fully understood. I shot almost the whole day with no issue, following all cease fire commands. Also allow time for other shooter who has issues with clearing their weapons. All in all, one has to follow the range rules and he will be fine with you and will welcome you back. Also so saw the the .45 hole that a dumb cop (go figure) made while trying to impress .... I don't know who. Oh forgot saw his 'infamous' son on the 'infamous' couch but didn't see the 'infamous' dog or wife. Good place to shoot. read more

This is an excellent gun range...beware of the negative reviews. As long as you abide by the rules of the range (great common sense rules) you won't have any problems. I felt more safe here than at other pulley driven ranges. Don't miss out on this range because of other reviews. The staff was friendly as well, monitor the range appropriately to keep it safe for all. If they get on to you for something you're probably doing something less than safe. The range is very bare bones, but you can shoot fmj on the 100 and 200 yrd range unlike elmfork. It is a bit of a haul to get out there from north dallas, but overall it is a good experience. The owner is a bit of a curmudgeon, but if you need your ego stroked, perhaps shooting isn't for you. If you break the rules you will get bitched at. Put your big boy pants on and take it like a man. The rules are there for your safety. The prices are good for what you get. Only reason I didn't give 1 star is because they allow FMJ at this range. There's normally 2 people working there, a female and a male. My understanding is that they're brother and sister. The lady has always been a pleasure to deal with, the man on the other hand has no place in the firearms community. Also if you own any NFA firearms, don't even think about bringing them to this range. You will be ridiculed and told how stupid you are for owning them. Also any kind of AR/AK platform pistols, leave them at home because they're not welcome either. Safety? What's that? While the man / range safety officer sits inside for 99% of the time only to come outside to blow a horn a call a cease fire. Guess what? This is a flag party. If you like having a loaded firearm pointed a you or disassembled right next to you, this is your place. The entire time he's inside the fuckery that goes on on the range is honestly laughable. Read the comments, half of the people who come here don't know how to operate their weapon. You will spend 99% of your time on this range unsupervised(this shouldn't be a problem). Why did I even go to this range? Because I was too stupid to know any better. For anyone considering going to this range, let me provide you with some alternatives that make this place look like 12 benches set up in the middle of Somalia. ETTS in waxahachie is top notch, could not speak more highly of them. Also garland public shooting range is night and day better. No FMJ at garland but they allow rifle, pistol(no matter what kind) and shotgun. Also B tactical up by Greenville and TDSA south of Dallas. One last thing to mention, if you're looking to introduce someone to the shooting sports, DO NOT bring them to Gibson's Outpost. I made this mistake, was ridiculed for shooting a SBR and my little cousin refuses to go shooting again. The guy who owns this place is a complete FUDD. Also if you need further review of this man's character, go up the street and talk to the manager or flight school on the airport. They know him too. Why? I was kicked out because my ready-set position was at a 45 degree angle and not by my side. When I told him that keeping a loaded gun pointed down at your side is dangerous, he kicked me out. Stay away from this range because I did not feel safe here and all ranges should feel safe. read more

First off I never write reviews. I am doing so because I am completely baffled by the bad reviews on this place and feel they are totally unfair. I searched for a place that I could shoot steel case FMJ ammunition to save some money and this place popped up. Today was my first time going here. The kind lady behind the counter was very pleasant and courteous. I found her to be very friendly and talkative as well. The gentleman whom was calling cease fire on the range also I found to be a decent person as well. As far as a shooting range, I thought the place was great. I had a wonderful time today. Is it an older range? Yes it is however I don't think that this at all takes away from the quality of the establishment by any means. The clientele that was there were very nice too. There were 5 older gentlemen, a husband and wife with their 3 children and then the people next to me was a dad with his son which I ended up having a great conversation with. I don't understand why people have such a negative view on this range. People complain that they were yelled at or treated unfair. If you were yelled at you were probably doing something unsafe or not following the rules set forth for the safety of yourself and others. Most ranges will tell you to leave if you are doing something unsafe so for them to simply yell at you I think you are lucky that they are cutting you slack. Those whom have called these people who own the range mean I think probably have a hard time in life in general and maybe don't understand respect is a two way street. I personally would like to thank the owners for the great afternoon I had. It has been a rough week after being laid off and this place certainly made up for it. I now can say I have a favorite outdoor range in DFW. I was going to visit this shooting range but after reading all of the negative reviews I decide not to. The reviews that I've read it seems to point towards terrible customer service and that means everything in my book especially if I'm spending my money there . There were more negative reviews than positive reviews. i'm sure at times that the owners may had some bad days, but those bad days seem to be more frequent than good days according to the reviews, so I will not be shooting here or giving it a try. Or until I start seeing more good reviews on this range because I really would like to try it out. So I'll spend my $20 at Eagle gun range where I can shoot all day and leave to go get lunch and come back and won't lose my spot on the range. Yes it was just confirmed the man that answered the phone was rude! No question about it. I asked a simple question, what does it take to be able to shoot at your range? The man on the other end of the phone responded, $19.00 dollars and a Texas drivers license! Click.......HELLO, HELLO It seems that click was him hanging up the phone. Usually something like that would have set a fire off inside of me but these days I'm learning to accept rude behavior. That rudeness will not keep me away and I'm not even a gun nut. I grew up right here in Garland.and have lived here most of the last 40 plus years. I remember my dad and I going to the Garland Range back in the early 70's. Seemed like fun to me. But I'm not going to the Garland Range cause you have to buy special bullets that really should be less expensive.I'm going to the rude Gibson Outpost and Shooting Range in Mesquite, Texas because I want to shoot real bullets and think about olde times. Been shooting here on and off for the last three years or so (probably in the neighborhood of 10 visits). I like this range. You can shott FMJ and they have 100 and 200 yd rifle. Mr. Gibson has always been friendly enough, but the Mrs is no doubt moody :-). Really no big deal. I understand where some folks are coming from, but I've honestly had no problems there. If you're looking for a clean, safe place to shoot for a fair price, you're good. If you're looking for warmth and to make friends with the owners, look elsewhere. You can expect less than perfect service in almost any business, and you will find unhappy customers all over. However, people don not take the time to write and post bad reviews unless they have good reason. I certainly wish I had read all the reviews about this worthless place prior to going with my family. Due to the high number of bad reviews on this business, you should take them seriously...THIS PLACE SUCKS...AND I WILL NEVER GO BACK! Spent (I mean wasted) $67 for membership dues and shooting fees for myself, my daughter and my nephew. Afternoon of fun shooting and learning, turned to shock, when some hell bent, old man, came up from behind to my (13 year old) nephew and started berating him for taking pictures of his property and threatening to sue him for a million dollars. Our whole group was in shock as we listened to him ramble for 30 seconds how taking pictures of his property was illegal and not permitted. I didn't want to argue with him...no joke...he acted like he was high on drugs. I've seen drug addicts with calmer demeanor. At the end of the day, we are packing up the car in the parking lot, and again I hear him yelling at another couple clear across the property for taking pictures with their family. 04/04/2015, i have been a devoted member of this gun range for over 25 years, this is a family owned buisiness, they are very informative on any questions you may have. the range fee is very resonable, they are very strict on the rules, this is why i like this range, you feel safe here, because not everyone may understand nor (((embrace gun safety))). if you come to this range and feel that you paid the fee for the day to shoot and you can act or behiave in an unsafe manner, then you need to go somewhere else. the gibson family is doing us all a favor by supplying us all a place to shoot safely. may the family legacey live on. read more
