I buy from Giant Eagle mainly for convenience since this is where we buy our prescriptions now that I am retired and they are a Medicare preferred vendor. Since Covid hit and I almost died from it 4 years ago I tend to order online and pick up my order, again for convenience. The downside is that I do not go into the store all that often so I don't select my merchandise but depend on a "shopper" to make selections for me - most times they do a great job - but often the brand I select disappoints. I selected Giant Eagle brand applewood bacon and this is what I got. As I separated the slices of bacon I found that the slices varied from thick to super thin and in between and then underneath the slices I found this clump of short fatty slices that I were gross. I guess they could be used if you were trying to melt them down to make a greasy puddle to fry breaded chicken in, but I don't cook in grease and to me they are just garbage and something I've paid for but cannot use. This is disappointing that I've paid for a pound of bacon but certainly did not get a usable pound of bacon.

Three issues with this particular giant eagle. The first and worst issue is they refuse to staff enough cashiers (see pic). You can literally spend 40 minutes checking out in there, which is ridiculous. Second, their carts too often have bad wheels. Not sure why they don't invest in some higher end carts. Third, for whatever reason their green peppers look like they've fought wars. It's a weird quirk about this place but their green peppers are almost always terrible. If you can just go to the waterfront. In an off-peak hour you might be ok.

    Lots of peppers

It was a really bad experience the deli and produce section did look really nice but all I wanted was a gallon of water. It took me 15 minutes to check out after o got the water. It's Friday night you would think they would of had more cashiers. Half the self checkouts weren't open and the few that were had problems. Definitely frustrating

There is only 1 person register open. Lines are up through the aisles. There is no items on the shelves compared to Monroeville.

I also appreciate the fair return policy, if something is wrong they refund your money and also you can replace the item. They don't give you any grief if you need to return something like Giant Eagle. They have certainly expanded their selection and the quality has always been good. The only issue is that the items come and go just like Trader Joe's. I love the hummus chips that pop up every once in a while, but then they go away quickly. I have always loved the fact that they never use plastic bags, which is very sustainable. It is very good to have them in the neighborhood. Please note: if you park out in the front you will not be able to transport your groceries in a cart out to your car. The store is wired so that the cart gets locked up if you try to leave out of the front door. This can suck if the back parking lot is full.

The selection of products is smaller than what many other grocery stores offer, and the prices are low to moderate. My husband and I shopped at this ALDI in the South Side one time. We saw a decent variety of fruits, vegetables, dairy products, eggs, meats, seafoods, snacks, pantry items, beverages, and other products. My husband commented that the chicken cost less than the chicken at other grocery stores. We purchased several snack foods and beverages for a stay in a nearby hotel. The cashier performed their job well. We did not have to wait in line for long, and the transaction had no errors.

I'm regularly coming in for a roast beef sandwich, lettuce, tomato, mayo on rye bread and they make it just the way I ask them because I'm fussy like that. I truly appreciate that they have high-quality fresh produce, excellent meats, pantry staples, a quality selection of crackers and cookies, Bread Works bread, and the best local ice creams. But they also have ready to bake hors d'oeuvres and fancy little tidbits for a last-minute party. I don't know what our neighborhood would do without them.

The selection of groceries and deli offerings are always fresh. The have the Boar's Head brand of deli meats and cheeses, great selection. If you dive into the grocery selection you'll find a lot of special things there, fresh, frozen and dry: Meats, cheeses/dairy, breads, snacks, condiments, baking items, beverages... Some interesting vegan options are here too. This is a very curated and enjoyable market. Shopping here got my household through some hard times during the pandemic. I can't say enough good things, if you are ever in the area you should stop in and check it out.
