giant has good weekly specials, a red box dvd location and decent prices. Ethnic selection is very poor. the salad bar is very disgusting with low quality (compared to whole foods) and the soups are heavy cream filled and boring to say the least. the self checkout using the barcode scanner is unique but there is no way to weigh produce. this leaves you confused as to what was scanned. the coupon that pops up based on past purchases does not relate to anything i will buy. this is poor design again, the coupons should excite me to spend dollars on what i would be likely to buy to increase my spend each visit another note on the self checkout, the scanner forces you to put items in the bagging area and there are only 2 bags to fill. this always causes scanning errors. the small details in life matter always. verdict: average, convenient and can improve read more

Being my neighborhood grocery store, I've been to this particular Giant Food countless number of times. I would say three stars is the average I would give it over the three-plus years I've been going there. It's not a great grocery store, but it's still not as bad as most of the Safeways I've been to in DC. I enjoy their good selection, the wine and beer section, the fresh cheeses and their long hours. For the most part, the cashiers are friendly and not slow. When you're a regular, you learn which cashiers are slow and you just avoid them. My biggest pet peeve with Giant is depending on what day of the week you go grocery shopping, you might find they have run out of certain items. Sometimes the milk will have expiration dates within a few days, which I find frustrating. Currently, this Giant location is going through a remodeling process. I gather from what I've seen so far that they are rearranging some of the aisles and creating more room in the store. I'm all for improving the store, but they were doing remodeling work while the store was open. I remember one night about a month ago I went to go pick up a few things and the constant banging was unreal. Some workers were banging something into the floor. Doesn't the store manager realize that loud banging doesn't create a comfortable shopping experience? I went to this Giant yesterday and it seems the remodeling is winding down and hopefully will be finished soon. I do have to hand it to Giant for offering good deals through the use of the Bonus Card. I think this is the big reason why this Giant remains popular. Also in a slumping economy, paying high prices at the Whole Foods in Clarendon loses its appeal. read more

I live in Arlington and I have the option to shop at Harris Teeter, Whole Foods and Trader Joes. The reason I continue to Shop at this Giant is that Hoai runs the self check out like a boss. Incredibly efficient! read more

Giant - Grocery Near Me - Arlington, Virginia

Such a small dumpy giant. They were running out of things on Sunday. I just thought what a derpy giant. Really tiny and things are kinda just scattered everywhere read more

The prices here are OUTRAGEOUS. $2 for ONE avocado? $4 for a head of cauliflower? $5 for a regular sized thing of sriracha? Almost every single thing in this store can be purchased at a significant savings at Trader Joe's or Wegman's or Walmart. Except for maybe seltzer. This store has inspired me on several occasions to change my plans for what to make for dinner that night because I just couldn't justify paying their prices for the things on my shopping list when I knew I could spend like half as much elsewhere. They also never have enough cashiers on hand. I have never not had to wait in line, and I have never seen all the lanes open. Then I always curse myself for going for the self checkout, because I don't think I've ever gone through it without getting some kind of error about an incorrect weight or placing unscanned items in the bags, or something. It obviously happens all the time, because when somebody comes to fix it, they don't even have to look at my cart to know I'm not stealing stuff! It's the busted self checkouts! It's the closest grocery store to me, so I do shop here sometimes out of convenience. But I always leave feeling a little bit sick to my stomach. read more

This Giant Supermarket has everything that I've learned to dislike about Giant Supermarkets in one convenient location: even the sale prices aren't competitive, items regularly ring up for more than the listed price even though I have their bonus card, and the staff hates you. Although I don't have a car, if I did I would be better off setting it on fire than trying to park in this Giant's parking lot, although that's in part because I've noticed that everyone in northern Virginia is terrible at driving. I continue to patronize this store because it is convenient, but I wouldn't go out of my way to shop here. read more

Just not a good Giant. It's small and the parking lot i awful. Tried to go on the way home from work and after spending 10 minutes going nowhere in the lot due to the gridlock, got out and went to Safeway on Lee Highway, where the lot was empty and the staff were friendly. Avoid this Giant, it's not worth the stress read more

One day we topped off a visit to Quincy Park with a shopping trip to Giant, to see how it compared to our beloved Harris Teeter. Verdict: easy victory for Harris Teeter. We can be kind of cheap, and we proceeded to check every single piece of produce we have ever bought to compare the price to HT. We were surprised to see that HT had the same or lower prices on pretty much every single one- potatoes, apples, onions, lettuce, etc. Same for the meats and packaged foods. Maybe we got there on a bad sale week too, because I saw nothing with a for sale sticker that even compared to Harris Teeter. Actually there was one: they had a stand of damaged things and there was a large poptart container that looked like it had been run over by a truck for $.75. We bought that. The environment here was also much more crowded and cramped than The Teets. And worst of all NO FREE SAMPLES!!!! We were horrified. We will never come back here. Harris Teeter has better prices, deals, and plenty of free samples to share. Now I'm in a ranting mood, so I have one more thing to say that bothers me any time I enter any grocery store: Not everyone who buys bread has 8 children. There are single people or couples who also would like to buy healthy bread but there is no way they can get through a whole massive loaf before the bread goes bad. Can't grocery stores sell half-loafs for half the price of a normal loaf of bread? I would like to eat sandwiches, but after always having to throw about half the loaf out, I have given up buying bread. I'm sure Arlington has lots of people like me, and selling bread in much smaller portions would be a welcome gesture. You can still sell the enormo-loafs, just sell smaller ones too! Gaaaah. In conclusion, if you live in the Ballston area and need to choose a grocery store, go to Harris Teeter. Take advantage of their great deals and enjoy their free samples while you shop. Don't come here. read more

Maybe it's because I'm used to NYC and Boston but this grocery store is great. Self check-out is a pain but it's everywhere now. The complaints about the parking lot are fair, friends have been hit while trying to leave. read more

SEVEN DOLLARS for arborio rice? $4.99 for a small box of cheese tortellini?? I went shopping here thinking it would be cheaper than Whole Foods, which is within walking distance of me. Not so. Instead, I ended up ditching my shopping tasks halfway through my list because I was so frustrated with the shoddy produce, the high prices and the rather...odd... people schlepping around in front of my cart. I'm giving it two stars because the woman cashiering in the absurdly long checkout line was quite nice. Oh, and because their leeks are cheaper and better than Whole Food's leeks. That's it. Not worth my time to come back here. read more

I actually drive a bit farther out to this location because I prefer this Giant to the Giant in Lyon Village. They have a larger store and wider selection of food, not to mention the pharmacy is great and the blonde pharmacist that works there is such a babe and so nice! I like this GIANT because I think they have a great selection of meat- always fresh and often on sale. I came a few weeks ago while they were renovating and that was a clusterfuck and I was a bit stressed by everything being out of place aka not where I know I can find it. Fast foward, I stopped by last night and really like what they've done. Store was upgraded, more self check outs, new checkouts, everything was clean and organized....rearranged but I'll get used to it I'm sure. read more

I shop here because it is super close to my house, and on nice days I can ride my bike here, that is unless I'm buying more than a couple of grocery bags worth of stuff. It has milk, bread, eggs, and sugar. It also has a decent assortment of cold cereal...a must in my eyes. And there is always a sale on ice cream, my waistline hates you and loves you at the same time. It doesn't have a great assortment of vegetables, cheese, or meats. So if you're looking to cook a fancy meal, you're probably going to have to search further that this local spot. What it does have going for it though is that it is cheaper than Harris Teeters. So for the basics and convenience I come here, but I will always be waiting for that Wegmans to hit North Arlington. p.s. the parking lot is not so great read more

So, this isn't the best Giant I've ever been to, but it fits the bill and gets the job done when I need it. I haven't had as much trouble finding things like some of the other reviewers. It's bigger than the Lee Highway Giant, but smaller than most Giants outside the Beltway, which is to be expected for this area. The decor is middle of the road also, but most of all this Giant is easy and convenient for those in Ballston/Virginia Square area. I can walk here when I want to pick up the basics that I wouldn't normally get (or pay top dollar for) at Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. Overall, this Giant is kind of Meh, but it works for me. read more

10/3/20 We bought cooked snow crab legs in the seafood department. The discount was about 50%. At home we found that the crab was expired and smelled like ammonia. Such high discount can not justify expired and spoiled products. read more

This Giant just finished undergoing a renovation that has made it much better than it was pre-Renovation. The biggest benefit of this store is unlike most grocers in the area it sells Boars Head meat. Now if you're a meat snob like me you know that Boars Head blows away most of the other crap that you get in store. Cracked Pepper Turkey and Sharp Provolone are life. I go here to get the Boars Head and string cheese, and sometimes pick up other staples as well. I will admit that their seafood and meat area does still look a bit sketch, and their fruits and veggies section is small and below quality... But Boars Head people BOARS HEAD! read more

Agreed: not the largest one in the area, not the fanciest, the parking lot is small.... BUT you can zip in and out at times with the self-scanning thing (whatever it is called) AND THE BEST part about this store is Betty at the deli. Even if you don't want anything at the deli, just go by and say hello; she's so darn nice. read more

Even though there's another Giant across the street from my apartment, I tend to shop at this location more often, for the simple reason that it's bigger than the Lee Hwy location, and has more products that I need. The produce usually looks good. I bought strawberries, which are delicious. The check-out lines tend to get long, but the cashiers are usually friendly and quick. I do wish that the Giant prepared more rotisserie chickens. It seems like if I get there after 5:30, all the prepared chickens are gone. read more

If it weren't for the customers, this place would be A-OK. It's just an average grocery store. The only problem is the people it attracts. Not the staff; they're nice. The customers. Pretty much to a T, you're going to be bumped, blocked, chortled at, and eyed down. ...and expect scratches and bumps on your car when you get back to it. On the other hand, though, it is probably the finest way to see the North American grocery store a-hole outside of it's natural habitat: the Whole Foods. read more

Good typical Giant. It has a wide selection. It is larger than the Giant on Lee Highway and offers more products. However, if you are purchasing fresh produce, I recommend the Lee Highway Giant. read more

I tried to buy a pound of bistro turkey and felt like being ignored only because I asked the guy at the deli shop to help me out. He was cleaning the cutting machine when I asked and he hesitantly suggested me to get from the cooler where he thinks there is one. I asked him, that can I have it a little bit thicker than usual. It is because they cut it thin and breaks out when I pulled it out of the bag. Anyway, he is there to do the job, cutting meat the way the customer wants. If he cannot or hesitantly do it, why should I shop there or why he should be working there. read more

Hallelujah! They finally got them self check-out lanes AND changed that fug Giant logo.

I'm giving this Giant a 4-star rating not because it's inadequate or because I've had any issues, but rather because it's just a typical grocery store. It's very conveniently located to residents of Virginia Square (and some of Ballston) and it does have ample private parking (which is truly a luxury in this area). I've always found the store to be clean and the food selection to be accommodating, though I could personally do with more meat options. The sushi in the back is decent, especially for the price. The only complaint is that the staff isn't terribly helpful and the Giant is always packed (though that's probably a testament to the convenience). In any case, perfectly good grocery store that's just a walk away from most residences in the area. read more

They've gone to almost all self checkout lanes, and it's very slow especially if you have, or are behind someone who has a full cart. This store has high prices, almost no customer service, and a very small parking lot. read more

Giant in general, and this one in particular, is about the lowest end grocery store I would ever go into. Poor selection. Poor service. Low-end products. Last time I was in there (I happened to be driving by and didn't want to take the extra 5 minutes to drive over to Harris Teeter to pick up a couple things) a roach scampered across the floor in the dairy section. I told the manager, and he asked me to identify the variety of roach - clearly he has some experience in this area. This store is dirty and should be inspected by the County health department. Stay away! read more

It's a typical mediocre Giant grocery store, but the checkers here seem to be even slower than normal. For the average grocery trip, go to Trader Joe's another 2 miles east. The only reason I come here is to get specific brands of products that I want to use in a dish I'm making. read more

Conveniently located within walking distance of my girlfriend's apartment. It gets the job done, and we never have issues with getting what we need because Giant usually has it stocked. The negatives are the small parking lot (sometimes we drive there), and the service is a little slow from time to time. read more

For a store that is constantly taking up valuable aisle space for restocking during ALL hours of the day they seem to be constantly out of stock of everything. The self checkout machines are temperamental and half the time you'll have to wait for help or just walk away. Couldn't find anyone behind the deli counter so I went to another department for help, was told I just need to yell loudly until someone comes out. Once a cashier just left her very long queue to go help a lady load her car after the lady insisted she didn't need any help. She never came back. Everyone had to go find a new line. No thanks. Heading to Harris Teeter. read more

Although it's not like one of the mega-newly constructed Safeways we're seeing in the area, this Giant is pretty good. There is a good flower selection, large fruit and vegetable section for the area, and an efficient and VERY CUSTOMER FRIENDLY deli section that allows you to place your order electronically and you can pick up your order when it's announced over the loud speaker. Moral of the story, place your deli order first, then pick up other items, then pick up your deli order. Good parking, never had a problem. The cashiers are also very nice! read more

I've developed a pretty poor impression of the Giant chain of grocery stores and this one's no different. I love their Nature's Promise brand, but after moving and coming to this new location, I've finally sworn off Giant forever. When you walk in, you will find that all the produce is rotting and covered in flies. No one cares to clean up. And, in standard Giant fashion, no one here seems to know how to bag groceries either. Go to Safeway on Columbia Pike instead. It's amazing by comparison. read more

I've shopped here for years. I used to like the store -- it was well-stocked and I like Giant's products. The check-out staff was always poorly trained and surly, but that was balanced by the convenience and product quality. Not any more. The shelves are not stocked, there's little variety in the produce, and the check-out staff has tanked. One young man rang everything up and then just started on the next customer, shrugging when I asked if he planned to bag my items. This week there were two checkers on duty -- one rubbing her eyes nonstop and the other doing a full-hand vigorous swipe of her runny nose. Usually the staff tries to ring up the shopping bags I've brought in with me (Giant brand, no tags, dinged up from previous trips), even after I explain that I paid for them weeks ago. The balance has finally tipped against shopping there... read more

I started going to this Giant three years ago when I first lived on S Stuart.. then I kept going when I moved to N Carlin Springs even though the Teet is right there. Now I live on the Pike (can you tell I'm that person that moves every time a lease up??) and still drive to the VA Square Giant.. my boyfriend mocks me endlessly because he goes to the newly completely renovated one just three blocks away. I like my old kind of dingy small Giant! And I also happen to have a work schedule that isn't 9-5 so I hit the store a lot in the middle of the week when its just me and the elderly.. thus I don't experience the parking issues other reviewers complain about.. but back to the store. It has what I need in a convenient small space compared to the massive Teet. The produce is fresh, I haven't had any problems with the fruit or veggies - and I am a veg so I'm always buying different produce. The pharmacy is dependable and really quick at filling prescriptions while you wait. I've never run into an issue of a product not being in stock, except for eggs once but apparently there was an issue. The staff is friendly and attentive, for instance two weeks ago there was a coupon in the weekend mailer and I forgot it when I went in later that week. The manager told me no prob, I could bring it in before it expired and have it credited. Three days later I came back and the manager recognized me without having to refresh her memory. I thought that was great customer service, I didn't expect her to remember me or my coupon but she did and I was in and out within a few minutes. I'll keep going back to the little old Giant, I don't need shiny white linoleum floors or spacious aisles when I go grocery shopping, just attentive staff and good quality food. read more

I seriously felt like a VIP walking into the store. I constantly met with smiles and greetings by the employees. Things were organized and moderately price. I will def frequent this place more. This is a thoroughly mediocre grocery store and I am glad that I don't live near it anymore. Their fresh food offerings were an insult.

If your idea of a great shopping experience is empty shelves, dirty floors, rude employees and long lines then this is the place for you. If those things bother you, then stay away. Tonight despite 5+ people in line for the single assisted lane, they decided to only keep that one register open. The employees that should have been stocking the shelves were too busy talking to each other in very crude and foul language. read more

I've been a big fan of self-checkout at this Giant. I can just scan and bag and usually be on my way until this past weekend. The software on the self-checkout stands has been changed. Yesterday I bought $90 worth of groceries and expected to just scan the exit bar code, swipe my credit card and be on my way. Unfortunately the machine didn't like my "phone number" that I use to identify myself at Giant and after an employee tried 3 times until successful getting me identified the software kept hanging. I repeatedly had to wait for an employee to unlock the machine which was an all round horrible experience just trying to get out of the place. I would like to say Giant "upgraded"the software but that just isn't true. It appears Giant just threw the new software onto the machines for customer testing. That's probably a lot cheaper than actually having to pay for software QA testing! The new software is quite user unfriendly, the labels used on the buttons and the workflow just don't flow well. At points in the workflow the machine just freezes. Evidently, this software wasn't tested very well and just slapped onto the machines for the store employees and customers to deal with. I went back today to buy a few items and noticed the store has signs on the machines asking customers to bear with the change of software. I gave the machine another try and got a little further before it froze and an employee had to unlock it. If you shop here and are in a hurry, it might be best to use the checkout lines for a few months until the old software is put back in place or the new software is tested and debugged by the customers using the crappy, new software system. Giant might consider having the software designers work a week in the store helping customers check out and use that knowledge and experience to go back and redesign the workflow into something that is easy and intuitive to use. All we are trying to do is check out and pay for already scanned groceries... not sign up for healthcare!! It shouldn't be that hard to have an easy workflow for scan/bag and pay customers. read more

I don't buy food from here. A lot of stuff isn't rotated properly. I've found expired products, quite a few times. Produce looks like it's been played around with. This has been my primary supermarket since it opened, but now I have given up. Too many surly staff, too many pricing errors (always in their favor surprisingly). When they correct it, they always act like I am putting them out and they are doing me a big favor by correcting it. Not everybody is surly, but enough so I am finally going to the very friendly and customer-focused Harris Teeter on Glebe Road. What a difference. It's not even that much more expensive, if it is at all. I leave with a smile on my face instead of feeling dissed. read more

In terms of the food shopping aspect, this grocery store is fine; however, the management is rude and not helpful. A significant portion of the employees are incredibly disinterested and bored with their jobs and that is evident in the way they treat the customers. There are several people there who are very helpful and friendly, but the majority seems barely able to make eye contact with customers. read more

I live in the Ballston neighborhood and have been here for 15 years, and my husband for 30 years. This store has been "Our Giant". I have always loved the convenience and the helpfulness, kindness, personalities of staff, and the smiles of everyone I see there. Today, I learned that my most very favorite cashier, Von, has been "let go". That young man didn't have a mean bone in his body. I'm so disappointed, I don't think I'll go to this Giant again for a long time. I think they should re-think their HR procedures. Von may not have been the most educated person in the staff, but didn't it tell you anything, Giant Management, that he always had such long lines that you had to call other people up to run registers just because he had so many fans? Seriously, every day I went to your store and got to see Von, it MADE MY DAY. Which word didn't you understand? IT MADE MY DAY. I couldn't wait to go back and see him the next time. He is a sweetheart and was always advocating the benefits of using the Giant card, and how much money I had saved over the year, and also when I needed to go get an extra special bonus he reminded me I needed to go to the Customer Service desk and not just walk out. I'm sorry you guys have to run your business like this. I will send letters. I'm very upset about this. Whatever you guys found as reason to fire him, shame on you. SHAME ON YOU. Be careful what you say about people. What goes around comes around. I'm praying for Von now, I hope he finds an EXCELLENT outstanding job now and will be a manager and will dust how you guys treated him. Patty Bristol read more
