Getaround is a life changer for me. The customer service is fantastic and highly responsive. The system works great as an owner, using the calendar, and anytime there are any issues with the car not being returned properly. Seen any strange cars parked in front of your house for days on end? They disappear for a day or two and then they're parked in front of your house again? You may be a victim of the new car sharing service called Getaround. I just found out about this after talking to a renter/driver of this car who was instructed to re-park it in front of my house. This business was also verified by a DC policeman. From where I'm living, someone is running a commercial business in a residential neighborhood. As if we don't already have enough parking problems in DC! The car in question has temporary Maryland tags. Any car without a paid-for DC parking permit is allowed to park for only two hours on my street. After being ticketed a number of times, this car now has NEW temporary Maryland tags! Are they making enough money to pay the tickets and then get new tags? I'm calling DC City Councilwomen Mary Che next to see if anything can be done about this. read more

I haven't rented yet because I'm leery of their insurance coverage. If you get hit by an uninsured or underinsured driver, or if someone damages it while you are parked and leaves (i.e., not your fault), you may get charged up to $1000 or $2500. Also, credit cards don't cover like for normal car rentals or Zipcar, etc. read more

Getaround is a great service, and anyone in D.C. without a car should look into it. Good selection of vehicles, and it's usually cheaper than Zipcar, even after paying to refuel. What is more, their customer service is very responsive. As far as the downsides: Like a Zipcar today, the cleanliness of your rental is hit or miss. I haven't experienced anything that would deter me from continuing my trip, but it's never as clean as a rental from a company like Hertz, or back when Zipcar started in the late 2000s. With that said, I do recognize my standards may be too high. Also, unlike Zipcar, you will have to return your vehicle to the pre-rental fuel level regardless of how full it is. I don't really mind that aspect as I seemingly am always under a quarter tank with all my recent Zipcar rentals; but the time to refuel is a factor. read more

I was never able to use the service yet. The first time I tried I had an emergency come up and I had to book the car right away for a few days well once I'm paying I get a notification that I can't book for another 24-48 hours while they verified my identity. I was in a panic and I emailed customer support since you can't call them. They got back to me and I explained my situation and was told I would hear back in an hour. Well 2 days went by for me emailing them (I missed important things at work) and they not getting back to me. On the 3rd day I got an email saying I was all set up and ready to book. That was a few weeks ago. So this morning I had something very important to do again this evening and I tried booking the car hours in advance and guess what? I get a notification saying I have to be verified again! I sent an email to customer support and I didn't get a response. This company is causing more stress and panic in my already hectic work life and I haven't even been able to use the service yet!! This is just so upsetting. I was really excited about this service when I first heard about it. Now not so much. read more

Horrible service. Call center misinformed me on how to book a car for Uber and when I called and asked for a refund they were rude and nasty and hung up on me repeatedly. I had to call for 3 hrs straight to get my money back and after they finally refunded me they blocked my account so I could not rebook and drive for Uber. I had the worst experience with Getaround. Their app and website showed the car I rented across the city, and when I arrived, they rudely kept telling me it was there. Not only wasn't it there, it was miles and miles away. After that rude customer service I was booked in a car 2X as expensive and was left to pick up the large tab. There was terrible customer service throughout and were not willing to help in any way with the cost I beared because of their incompetence. Would never recommend this service to anyone. read more

I've been contacting GetAround since Monday to have my account verified they said it would take 24-48 hours to get my account verified. Called Wednesday turns out they never received my verification photos that I sent via email. It's now Friday and now they're asking for pieces of mail with my address and date listed. I've been highly inconvenienced, this process to just get my account verified is too much of a hassle. If GetAround is going to say it's going to be 24-48 hours to get my account verified they should at told me ahead of time when I sent over my license and other information so I could send over all the verification information all at once instead of having me wait then tell me last minute that I need more pieces of info to verify my account. It's ridiculous!! read more

They charged me for an incident that I did not cause. BEWARE! Make sure to take ALL of the pictures of ALL of the scratches! There is no protection for customers that rent cars. The scratches were all incurred at the same time and I took a few of the pictures and got caught by some minor scratches that I was not able to see in the daylight. read more

Initially, we showed up about 30 mins early, as we weren't sure about D.C. traffic. We called the help desk to see if we could get in the car earlier, as I didn't mind an extra charge. However, there was no option whatsoever for this. So, we just had to wait outside in the cold until the official time came up. We can't be the only ones and won't be the only out of towners in the future to show up early. Also, I didn't have a chance to fill up the gas, so obviously I understand the extra charge for the gas. No problems there. But didn't know there would be an additional $15 charge for not filling up. What the hell is that for? Just seems like it's gouging. To put it into context, we had a Prius and drove about 30-40 miles. 1 bar from the fuel gauge went down. $15, are u serious? I will not be using this service again. read more

I rent my car out on Relay Rides and tried out Getaround and the experience has been absolutely awful. I had pending issues with my car (flat tire etc) from rentals and their follow up was awful, I had to pay out of pocket myself because they never came to pick my car up like they said and never resolved the issues. I asked to take my car off of Getaround and they have to uninstall something from your car- they scheduled 3 separate appointments and never picked my car up and never wrote me back when I emailed about it, which was frustrating because I turned down rentals because they said they were coming. All around awful experience, highly recommend www.relayrides.com though. I've been renting from them for over a year and have had stelar experience! read more

I rent my car out on GetAround in Ballston/Arlington Virginia and it has been going great. Support could be a bit more streamlined, but has been responsive. The new community manager has been easy to access and cares. I have been making money, have had no problems at all with renters, and look forward to having even more renters as the weather gets nicer. read more

Love Getaround, has always worked for me in DC but there's some tips I have: - Be aware of parking, if you're not good at parallel parking pick a car that is in an actual space. It is a bit hellish parking on the busy one ways unless you're savvy driver. - Bring febreeze with you, from other peoples perspectives your car is musty - I would go for full day price if you're about 4-5 hours, it's just worth it instead of scrambling to return at the last minute. - You only return the gas you use but do use your phone to snapshot before and after odometer and tank gauge. Often tanks are half full. I have been hit with a fee before so I will message Getaround to notify the tank gauge when renting. - Getaround is more economical for casual trips like a road trip to Annapolis. If you're running around the city, on a tight clock, and eating up gas, Zipcar may be better because gas is covered in that cost or you can return a car at half-tank. Remember to factor in time to refill the tank. read more

Not one to usually write reviews but I like another car sharer stated, it's necessary to warn others about the terrible experience of sharing with getaround. This is a pretty obscured fact on their website, the "Connect" device installed in your car drains the battery. It is recommended that you drive your car at highway speeds every 2-3 days for 45 minutes in order to keep the battery charged. Why the $%*& would I have signed my car for others to use if I needed it that frequently or for that long? This is for car owners who don't need their car all the time, so that requirement is absolutely bananas. 2 weekends in a row were impacted because I could not use my own car (dead battery) and getting them to respond and uninstall it was a disaster. I recommend staying way, way away. read more

Do not use this service. They love to hit you with hidden fees and other charges that they buried and hidden in their terms of service. And good luck with their customer service. They are more interested in teaching people a lesson than working with their customer to ensure they come back as repeat customers. Bottom line: stay away. read more

The battery was dead when I got to the car. Another time the front passenger seat was completely wet. They have a damage fee of $750 or so if vehicle is damaged in your possession, regardless of fault, and they offer no damage fee waiver. This amount of risk to rent a car is unreasonable. This company is just probably not going to make it. read more

Beware. If you're involved in a collision and not at fault, Getaround's feckless, lazy insurer will drop the ball, concede that you're liable, and charge you $1,000. Even legacy car rental companies offer supplemental collision insurance, but Getaround does not. Probably because they want to screw you with hidden insurance costs even in cases where you're not at fault. Frankly it reeks of collusion by Getaround's insurer. Why would they fight to absolve you of liability when they hide a $1,000 insurance fee in their ToS? Stay away. read more

My car was broken into not two weeks of being on Getaround platform. The product is flawed as the cars keep getting broken into. My car was in a secured parking lot and that didn't stop the car thieves. The cars are an easy mark for car thieves because the app tells them exactly were the car is and they all know the keys are inside of the car. They break in with the intent to steal the car and if they can't get it because the ignition is deactivated they steal the keys so they can sell the transponder for a few dollars. Leaving the owner with the cost of repairing the window they broke plus the keys that were stolen, in the best case scenarios. I haven't even made $30 in rentals and now I have $500 in repairs. They need to figure out a better system than what they have now. I would not recommend putting your car on the platform. The insurance they offer only covers the car if it is rented. So all of the repairs for vandalism and theft will be the owners responsibility. read more

So I recently got a job that made it so I don't drive my car hardly at all anymore but my lease isn't up til March. I decided to give Getaround a try since it seemed pretty low risk with their insurance policy and ability to unlock my car via the app. They also gave me 30 days no-cost and a guarantee of a certain amount of money if I made my car available a certain amount of time (I won't say how much since my particular deal is over I believe). Let me just say, I am really impressed. My car's first rental was July 26 and here we are at Aug 18 and I'm at about $425 in revenue already. I will update if I experience any problems but so far its been smooth as can be and the money is already better than I expected! read more

The experience with the company had been unprofessional since the day I signed up. When I signed up for the membership, it took six days for them to verify me (after I had to call them twice on the matter). They have horrible customer service. I rented a car yesterday and the car was not in the location stated on the app. I called customer service and the gave the wrong street name. Then when I finally found the car, it had trash in it and the gas tank was not full like it said it would be. The icing on the cake was that they stole my money! I made my reservation with extra time in insure no late fees, and I returned the car early. I called to get the reservation to end, and they refuse to end it. They have taken 9 hrs of my money and refuse to credit my account. Don't waste your time with this company. read more

Where do I even begin??? I rented a car that specifically said that was ready to use with Uber and after driving the car of the lot I tried to go online the Uber app did not let me stating that my account needed attention I called Getaround and was told that when this happens the car is added manually and that this will be done right away, then I'm told that the car has been added and that if I continue to find difficulties is with Uber, I could keep going but to resume 17 hours, 5 conversations with Getaround, 4 Conversations with Uber later a dumb representative from Getaround tells me that I have to take the car back to is location because the registration is expired, I almost forgot to mention that the license plate that I was given in the app did not correspond to any car on the lot, I have to walk around on 97 degrees to figure out which car it was. I would recommend that if you want to preserve your sanity you DO NOT USE GETAROUND! specially in the Washington DC area, this was my first experience and everyone involved ruined it for me. read more

Here is my experience: I booked a car for 1 day in 5/2016. A couple of months later, they notified me that I have a parking ticket and went on charged my credit card without my permission, which didn't make sense to me. All they gave me was a citation number and asked me to call the Montgomery county to figure it out myself. I called but all it says is that the balance has been paid but no other info. I had to ask for proof of it. After several email exchanges, they finally sent me a photo of the ticket. It turns out it is a speeding ticket taken by street camera, but NOT a parking ticket. I don't understand why it was so hard for me to provide accurate information and the actual ticket in the first place! The ticket fine is $40, but Getaround want to charge me additional $25 processing fee? I would understand if the car was towed and they had to go retrieve it, but this is not the case. All the owner has to do was upload a photo to Getaround. I am willing to pay for the $40 fine but has never agreed to pay $25 processing fee. I had one similar experience a few years ago with another regular rental car company (Avis), for which I had to pay the ticket but not a cent more (no processing fee)! So the bottom line is, if you don't want to pay hidden fee and deal with unclear communication from Getaround customer service, then go with conventional car rental company. That was my first Getaround and also my last Getaround experience. I will only rent from conventional rental car company from now on. It's just not worth the hassle. read more
