Do not use Getaround. At least half the time, the cars do not open, or are in need of major repairs. When they do work, Getaround will use your credit card to repeatedly charge you for bogus fees. Look them up on BBB. I wish I had before using their services. Every time I have used them, it's when I was in a bind and needed a car for an emergency, but I have not had a single smooth experience. Here is my experience briefly - 1. Reserved a car for three days; got sick and cancelled the reservation. they kept the entire rental cost of $170. 2nd time rented a car and discovered air leak on one of tires and try to change spare tire and no tools to change spare tire. Paid out of pocket to fix it, no refund. 3rd time rented another car to drive Uber and discovered the car does not have proper documents for UberX, rent $80 per day, car returned. no refund. Do not use this service. Consider this a warning. If you run into an issue, such as with a third party or you yourself run into an accident, the customer service is absolute trash. This is the most unprofessional renting company I have come across in my life. I really hope they shape up or close down. I have been charged with a damage fee despite giving insurance information for the third party that scratched my rented car. I was not refunded and the insurance card was never charged. I rented a fetaround for UBER and was given a disaster of a car. I paid $200 on BOOKINGFEES! + insurance and daily fees. It was a total of 400. I drove over a pot hole and drove the car back one day later in communication with get around. get around tried to deduct an additional amount of $500 from my credit card that was thanks to FOD declined. Instead they just stole the $50 that was left from the credit card. It it was a rf trust worthy company, they would have send me a bill with a demand of an amount that I owe. Do NOT use this service. You might be tempted because the cars generally tend to be cheaper than with other car rental apps, but you will soon discover why this is. Without exception, every single one of the cars I have rented with Getaround (6 or 7) have had serious problems (with brakes, fuel gauge, headlights, dead batteries, on and on). Two had to be abandoned and towed because they were entirely un-driveable. In the beginning, Getaround customer service was very nice and accommodating, offering quite reasonable discounts on future rentals, which explains why I continued to put up with their terrible cars. The last time I rented with Getaround, I discovered the headlights did not work an hour away from my home destination at night. The customer service representative refused to reimburse me for the taxi ride home and told me I should wait for and then ride with the tow truck. Once, a customer service representative suggested I ride in the car while it was being towed. Ridiculous. The last straw happened when customer service contacted me two days ago about a car I rented in November 2019. The owner alleged I damaged the car and Getaround conveniently lost the photos I submitted for the pre-inspection. For evidence, Getaround had photos taken a week after my rental ended. Although I pointed this out, Getaround never responded to my concerns or produced more compelling evidence. Despite my express statement that Getaround did not have permission to charge my card, they still charged me $833. What a scam. I have initiated a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. I have two cars listed on Getaround. The customer service used to be great, you'd email them a problem and they would solve it. Now it is awful. Takes them forever to respond, can't submit reimbursement without a huge headache. And the take 40% of the fee and charge you a monthly fee for the GPS unit that is installed on you car. Please this is a dire warning for Owners of cars that want to put them on this platform. DON'T! Getaround did not properly vet a renter, he damaged my car with roughly 2,500 in repair needed. I have spent excessive amounts of time on phone with customer service representatives that say the same thing. "Sorry we're still reviewing claim and we'll get back to you." No when ever gets back to me. There is no way to get through to the claims department and there is no one in a supervisory role that can address your concerns. I am honestly beginning to think this is a very poorly run racket. I honestly think there is one person in customer service that goes by multiple names - Paul, Fred, David. It's all the same dude and it's all bullshit. There is a phantom guy named David in claims who is yet to contact me. It's absurd. My car is in shop ready to be repaired and I cannot get GetAround to guarantee reimbursement. I am at the end of my rope and am most likely going to have to go to Small Claims Court. UPDATE: Getaround just informed me finally after I posted on here that they will not cover any of the damages. The did not properly vet a driver (I have evidence as they stupidly cc'd me on the back and forth emails with the driver trying to cover their asses two days after the incident). The driver abused the car, busted a tire, and then proceeded to drive with a spare for what seems like over 50 miles (as it ended up at my house flat, see pic). Autoshop says there was damage to the wheel hub and an entire new wheel in addition to tire is required. Getaround claims this is normal wear and tear. I would caution any owners before they rent their car on here! If you ever run into an issue with your car, expect customer service to take a week to get back to you and not be helpful at all. The connect device also messed with my battery and voltage pressure in the car and getaround would not help me remove it. When I first joined, they had a super helpful number you could call but got discontinued it, I guess to cut costs. I hate this company and would not recommend it to anyone. This is an update I've been compiling over 4 weeks while I wait for the latest Getaround scam to be resolved. Here's what happened: I got an email from Getaround accusing me of damaging a car from a trip that happened 273 days ago. Luckily I am a weirdo and I save all my photos, but what if I hadn't? Getaround somehow keeps managing to make me cry, even when I no longer use their service! I really suggest staying away. Another warning: I incidentally found out during this fiasco that they keep your credit card info on file even after you delete your account. It took me three additional weeks after the fraudulent damage accusation was resolved and over 5 phone calls before it was finally removed. So just be aware that even if you cut ties with this company, a year later they may accuse you of damaging a car AND they secretly have retained your cc info. Getaround is frighteningly incompetent, go with Zipcar instead. Seriously, I've been using Zipcar for a few months now and it is magnificent in comparison. I have nothing but positive things to say. This is a very unethical company. I wanted to remove my vehicle from their platform after moving across the country to be near a loved one with stage 4 cancer. JACK from Getaround walked me through the steps to find a radio installation mechanic in order to have the technology removed from my car that works with the getaround app- promising me that I would be reimbursed. This mechanic was a 45 minute drive from my home (1hr+ round trip). I have not been reimbursed for the uninstallation ($111) and for sending the part in the mail to their California offices ($12). Both JACK and MARICAR are extremely unprofessional, dismissive, and negligent. They have stopped responding to me, telling me to check my paypal account to which of course I have and I have not received the reimbursement amount at all. Please file more complaints if you have an issue with this company with the California Attorney Generals Office, The BBB, and the CFPB. This is a very unethical company. read more

Getaround is the best most attainable solution to the rideshare experience.  My experiences have been exceedingly professional with only kind , understanding treatment... I'm not one to normally post reviews but the terrible-ness of getaround has left me needing to warn others. Sure, if you have a newish car then you are able to make a bit of money when the cars not in use but if I could do it over again I would've never signed up. The customer service offered by getaround is unforgivably terrible. Whether it's for a routine issue or something serious then take FOREVER to reach a conclusion and completely leave you in the dark in terms of communication. I would usually need to send 3 or 4 angry emails / 1 or 2 angry phone calls following up on an initial issue to get any sort of response or update. Also the driver base varies widely in terms of how they treat and respect your property. Getaround has a very flimsy process in terms of inspections before / after a rental so many times as an owner I would notice damage long afterwards a rental because it was in some corner of the car (for example one time a renter burnt holes on the bottom side of my leather sides with an e-cigarette or something similar) and I would have no way of getting compensated. I would advise everyone to save themselves the headache / stress and steer clear of this company that clearly doesn't value the owners who rent out their cars and make it far too easy for renters to get away with leaving cars in terrible shape. read more

When I reserve a getaround it's because I have an appointment I need to get to. Last week I went to pick up my car and it wasn't there. They said the person was late returning--why didn't they notify me? I would be more forgiving if the same thing didn't just happen to my neighbor picking up a car from the same location (Westin at 17th and M). I had to race all the way across town because there weren't any others available. The cars are always pretty dirty inside and gas tanks are never full. I could go on and on, really. The app is ok, except you have to answer all these questions before doing anything. Also, read the fine print, if you get in an accident, regardless of whose fault, it's $1k, for lux cars I think it's $2k. I need to look into alternate options--there used to be a lot more. read more

I don't own a car and have only used getaround to rent. I've rented a little over 6 times over the course of the past 2 months. I typically use it for rental periods of 5 or 6 hours as it is very convenient to be able to rent a car that is within a 5 minute walk instead of taking time to get to a car rental agency. Also, for these shorter rentals the price is similar to those of a rental car agency as most cars cost $20-$30. I've also found it to be very useful on holidays when rental agencies are packed and their prices are increased. For daily rentals I sometimes still use traditional car rental companies as many times they are very inexpensive at only $30/day, whereas Getaround Cars are usually around $50 per day on the weekends. I've only had one minor issue and that was when my rental period backed up to another renter and they were late in returning the car, so it wasn't available when I went to pick it up. I was able to communicate with the owner, but when I called getaround no agents were available. Getaround did return my call about 15 minutes later. Communication was good with the owner who had heard from the renter that he was running a little late, and luckily the car was there about 10 minutes after my rental period had started. In the future I'll probably avoid booking a car if I see it reserved right before my rental time to avoid this conflict. Also, the app did not allow me to cancel the rental even though the car was unavailable at my pickup time. I believe only a getaround agent can do this. If I could have cancelled I would have just rebooked with another car that was close by. Getaround did give me an extra hour of use in the car due to the other renter being late. read more

Update 11/11 I called Getaround to get an update today and they said that even though i gave them the police report, they did not bring this with them to get my car released from the impound lot. I also asked for a car that I can use as I wait for my car and it's like pulling teeth. I mean, this should be covered by insurance but they have been not helpful at all. No one has been in communication with me. I still keep having to follow up EVERY DAY with continued frustration. The customer support is great. They're very responsive and willing to collaborate on any issues. They get back to you quickly; are always nice on the phone, and document nearly everything via email. For rentals for Uber driving, the 2019 models are often a great offering. Anything earlier than 2019, be flexible and prepared for minor issues - low-tire-pressure indicators; less-than-optimal phone mounts; oil-lights. The cars can often use a vacuum cleaner and/or car wash. Don't expect to get high marks for "clean car" from Uber riders. I'm ok using these cars on an hourly basis for Uber; I doubt I'd rent one for long-distance, multi-day trips - unless it was a new model. Tom read more

At this point I am done with Getaround. I would give them a zero if I could, but there is no option to do so. I have not used their service in about a year for the reasons listed in my previous reviews. I sent them e-mails on April 12th and 14th of 2022 requesting them to delete my account. I opened help desk tickets #7606842, #7575250, and #7564436 requesting them to delete my account. THIS IS FIVE TIMES I HAVE REQUESTED THEM TO DELETE MY ACCOUNT AND IT IS STILL UP. I logged in just this afternoon and my account is till active. At this point, Getaround has permanently lost my business and they will not get it back. Just take the Metro to the airport and rent a car there. These car-sharing apps are an excellent concept, but these tech companies are absolutely incompetent and tone-deaf in their customer service. I have had similar experiences with Grubhub and Uber Eats. The quality of the service is so poor that it is not worth having at all. I also vehemently object to them requiring my Facebook username and password to use their service. The only things they need from me are my driver's license number and credit card, and maybe proof of insurance. I tolerated them requiring my Facebook credentials when I first started using the service in 2018, because their service was very good at that time. I have had nothing but run-arounds from them since then, and at this point I have absolutely lost my patience. This is a grossly unethical company. I used to rent my cars through Turo and had a few situations where I was not at fault, but the end result always left me feeling like they weren't customer or guest friendly. Ultimately, I left Turo and started renting through GetAround and I have not had one situation/question/concern that wasn't handled expeditiously, professionally or appropriately. From needing to switch out of cars at the last minute because I wasn't happy with how I found the car to helping me locate the keys when the Host mistakenly claimed they were elsewhere on the posting. NEVER USE THIS CAR-SHARING SERVICE. The rates are good, but you are completely at the mercy of the car owner, and if you get an unscrupulous one (as I did) who claims that you did something bad to his/her vehicle, you have NO recourse. GetAround will just go and charge you some ridiculous amount without even letting you defend yourself. This is because THERE IS NO PHONE NUMBER TO CALL TO GET GETAROUND'S CUSTOMER SERVICE. They will just send you an email to say that the car owner made some claim against you, and that 's that - they believe the owner and not you. In my case, the owner claimed a "dead battery". It wasn't dead when I parked the car, and I didn't leave the lights on or anything that might drain it, but I wasn't even consulted by GetAround before they charged me an additional $50. Now, today - July 30 - I get an email from GetAround's "Claims Team" saying that for that very same trip - which occurred on JUNE 29, more than a MONTH AGO - the owner is also blaming me for two flat tires. Again - those tires were fine when I parked the car. And I had taken a very short trip from DC to Vienna, VA, in which I stayed the entire time on large, well-maintained roads (hardly likely to cause TWO punctures). What's more - get this: The email says that if they find that the owner is telling the truth (without asking me, of course), "you will be responsible for the damage fee of $3000, or the cost of repair." So, because this guy says that his tires (on a ten-year-old car, I might add) went flat, I get notified A MONTH AFTERWARDS I used the car that I am the one responsible for the flat tires (And when did they go flat, exactly - yesterday?). And I can't even call GetAround to complain about this because - yes - THEY HAVE NO NUMBER FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. The only time you can get a person on the phone (at a call center overseas) is when you are in the middle of, or just before, a "Trip". Which you may very well need to do, because it is often impossible to FIND the car you booked (there will be an address for it in the app, but the car is rarely parked at that location). The people who will help you find it are very nice, but they are not really part of the company. And YOU CAN NEVER GET ANYONE FROM GETROUND ON THE PHONE (not even the people at the call center) other than when you are actually in the middle of a Trip. So disorganized. Showed up at a huge lot at Union Station. Getaround employee was no help - cars are randomly strewn about the lot. After looking for 25 minutes, no car. Called customer service. After 15 minute wait, they said they car I had paid for and reserved was rented out to someone else. Arranged for another car online with customer service. After looking for it for another 15 minutes, no car. Also rented out. Arranged for a third car. Found it after a 10 minute search. It was dirty, but at least it was there. I really wanted to love this company and switch from Zip Car. However, the company is still clearly figuring things out. The fact that I just registered my personal information - including DL# and credit card - with a company that is still working out its kinks is frightening. I just went through the entire process of connecting my FB account for verification, finding and reserving a car, and then entering in my personal information including driver's license and credit card information. I had also bought a Groupon and used the voucher card. Because the resulting screen letting me know my reservation was being processed just kept spinning, I called their support number. Of course, I couldn't find a phone number on the site. I had to Google search for it. At no point in the process did the website alert me that I also needed to take of photo of myself holding my driver's license for verification. It said it needed my FB account for that. It also wouldn't let me complete the process unless I allowed them access to all my FB contacts. I normally decline that access b/c it's used for spam marketing. However, I agreed this time. So if they also needed a photo of me holding my DL, why do they need photos of me at a Halloween party or on vacation? Additionally, when I spoke with customer support, I wasn't even told how to upload my photo with DL. He just kept saying I had to do it. Moving on - the website also never raised a flag to say that while I thought I was reserving a car for same day use (literally within a 30 minute window), I wouldn't be approved for rental for another 24-48 hours. If I reserved a car for use in the next 30 minutes, how was I supposed to pick up the car if Getaround wasn't planning on verifying me for another 24-48 hours? read more

A driver in a Getaround vehicle rear-ended my 20-year-old daughter about two weeks ago. The driver gave my daughter his drivers license and insurance information, and I called. At this point I have spoken to two or three people at Getaround, having called multiple times. They have yet to allow me to talk to anyone in their claims department, or to a supervisor. I have no claim number and no follow-up information. My daughter doesn't feel that she suffered any injury, but the back of the car is bashed in and I would like to get it fixed. For us as non-car-owning city-dwellers who sometimes want to get out of town for the weekend or just visit friends in the suburbs for a few hours, Getaround has proven a great option. There are more cars than Zipcar, it works out significantly cheaper (typically $7/hr instead of perhaps $12/hr for Zipcar), and there's something nice about borrowing a real person's car. It's also a much more attractive option than renting from a traditional agency (Budget, Enterprise, etc.), since we can often walk to the car and then start driving almost instantaneously, rather than fill out paperwork, etc. The fact that they install devices in the cars is obviously a big help in that respect. (I note that several car owners complain that these devices drain the battery massively, so hopefully that's something Getaround can address.) The downsides fall into two main categories: issues related to the concept, and issues related to Getaround's execution. In terms of the concept, one issue is that renting real people's cars means cars are not always going to be the latest model with all the nice new features you'd get with a traditional rental car (or a Zipcar for that matter). Another issue is that the car may not be especially clean. We've not had any particularly negative experiences in that respect, just don't be surprised to find a certain amount of dog hairs/crumbs/general grime on occasion. In terms of Getaround's execution, for the most part it's been a positive experience. First off, the app works fairly well, as does the website. They are a little bit primitive, though, and one issue in particular is that the (Android) app often seems to forget my login details, but instead of just asking me to log in again, it gives an error message and no clear way to log in again. Another issue was that I recently tried to make a booking, only to be told I had to go through the driver's license verification process (which involves waiting for a manual review) before I could do so. I had already done this months ago, so it was frustrating to be made to go through it again with no explanation of why. Third, the pricing structure is a little bit silly in one regard. It turns out that, while you can rent a car for a full day at (if memory serves) 8x the hourly rate, if you book a car for 7 hours and then extend the booking by 3 hours, you'll end up paying for 10 hours. So in some circumstances it pays to book the car out for a full day even if you don't plan to keep it that long, just in case. There isn't even a way of ending your booking once you do return hours before the end of the booking, in order to free it up for someone else who might want to use it. Lastly, unlike Zipcar you have to fill up the gas after each rental, even if it was only for a few hours to drive a few miles within the city. And of course you have to pay not just for the gas, but also to rent the car for the additional time it takes to drive to the gas station and fill it up. That feels like an unnecessary hassle. To summarize, we are happy Getaround users and will continue using it and recommending it to friends. We're hopeful it takes off a bit more, so that a few more cars will become available and so that Getaround can invest the resources it will take to smooth off some of the current rough edges. read more

UPDATE: Finally by 8:45 AM after an hour of talking to support I was connected to a customer service rep who said they would make it right by Venmo'ing me $160 to cover the cost of my rental with another company. They followed through on this, and in fact sent the amount twice, apologized again, and said I could keep it as it was, once again, their mistake. So I think they are good people trying to do the right thing, but if I can't be sure I'll have the rental I booked a week in advance on the morning I need it, I'm not sure I can trust their service. When you need a car, you need a car, and unfortunately I only need to rent when I need 6+ seats, which very few of the cars on their service have so the options for backups are few. read more

I had high hopes for this site as it was suppose to bypass Zipcar in terms of being able to bypass paperwork. I unfortunately experienced the same verification problem as other users. I sent my picture for verification 20 minutes they sent me instructions but I never got a reply about my next day booking. Please know that most of your customers come here because of the wait times for zip car was too long. The fact that the DC office is open but can't verify because verification can only be done in the back office in California just makes no sense; verification and booking should be in the same time zone. The battery died during my rental and because it's a Prius, we couldn't put it in neutral to push it into a spot. It is sitting in a private lot thankfully but it is blocking two cars and I have no way to move it. I've been calling the "24/7" helpline all night with no answer. The owner is also completely unresponsive. They have my cc on file and are charging me by the hour. Do not ever use them. I may have to cancel my cc just to stop the charges. read more

Getaround is illegally charging me tolls fees to my card without authorization. This has been going on for over 5 months and they can't figure out a solution. I ended my contract with them over 12 months ago yet they keep charging me for tolls that are not part of an active rental. They are charging me for tolls that I drive through in my own personal vehicle, using my own E-ZPASS pass device. They won't return my money and have not returned my messages. Getaround is a scam. Overall - we have been happy with Getaround, and we are definitely going to keep renting our car in it, but here are our pros and cons so far for anyone thinking about using it. Pros - Extra $100 a month for doing almost nothing (and we are a family of four that needs the car a fair amount) - Great renters. We have yet to have a major issue (smoking, damage) with a renter. We have only had minor stuff like being a little late or not refilling the tank Cons - I don't know what the solution is, but refilling the tank is definitely an issue. A renter who uses a quarter of a tank doesn't want the hassle, but then we have to fill it up before the next renter and it affects our profits - Customer service is super fast about getting you signed up and your car listed and ridiculously slow about everything else. I have been a long-time getaround user, I rent cars almost on a weekly basis to take my son to his daycare, to pick up relatives from the airport, to go visit friends in the suburbs, etc. After so many rentals all I can say is that every new rental is like playing the Russian roulette: you never know if the car is going to be where it's supposed to be, and if it is whether you will be able to access the car. Today everything that could go wrong went wrong. I had a car reserved for an hour to take my son to daycare and then be back home in time for an important work call. The car I rented has an assigned parking spot in a garage near me. When I get to the garage I open the app and it tells me that the car is actually parked outside, about three blocks away on S st NW. This shouldnt happen as the car must be returned to its designated spot in the garage. Nevertheless, I go look for the car outside the garege, but it is nowhere to be found. I walked around the block, walked through the back alley parallel to S St, nada. Now its been nearly 30 mins that I have been looking for the car (the rental was for one hour). I call getaround, I explain the situation and tell them that now I am late and will probably miss my call, I demand an uber to and from the daycare. They say they cannot do that. Instead they refund me for the car I never found and book another car back in the garage where I had just come from. That took another 20 minutes. At this point I should have been coming back from dropping off my kid, instead I am in some alley with no car and drenched in sweat. I walk back to the parking garage, the other car is there, when the rental starts I try to open the car, nothing happens. I try again, no dice. I call getaround once again, the rep tells me that the car cannot be opened because it has no battery. *expletives*. I tell the rep I am just going to take the uber. at this point I've wasted an hour of my morning and I am still at square one. $20 later I took my son to day care and made it back in time for my work call. thank you Uber, at least you are reliable. These kinds of things happen to me at least once a month with getaround, but today was the pinnacle of absurdity, with two rentals in a row going south and now Im $20 out of pocket, when I was planning to just spend $6 on a one hour getaround rental. I have one more rental scheduled tomorrow, which I am hoping will go well. But after that I will look into other car sharing options that are reliable. You have such a good product that creates value to all stakeholders. If only you were proactive in solving these kind of problems, for example, by sending me an alert to let me know that the car wasn't in its designated spot and booking another car automatically. Yes, your rates are probably the cheapest, but your service is not reliable. and ultimately that is what consumers value the most, reliability. To know that our time is respected and valued. I don't have a car, and have no interest in buying one because of the constant hassle of cost, insurance, maintenance, and parking tickets. When I discovered Getaround, it made my life so much easier. I have rented from Getaround about 20 times, ranging from one hour to four days. I love the flexibility of being able to use a car right in your neighborhood to do those big trips to the grocery store, to pick up furniture I bought on Craigslist, or whatever I can't do via Metro. The prices are honest- if it says $7/hr, that's what you're charged. There is a $1 charge for each booking, so if you rented it for 2 hours: $7/hr x 2 +$1 =$15. Cheaper than a cab, Uber, or Lyft- with all the freedoms of driving yourself. Everything is App-based, so keep make sure your phone is charged up. The App is simple, works well, no complaints. I live in Capitol Hill and there are 3-4 within short walking distance of my house, including a $10/hr truck, a $7/hr car, an $8/hr Audi, and an $11/hr Camero. If I try to book last-minute, sometimes all of the options are booked and I have to take the Metro to a car outside my area. Great options, and I'm glad it's popular. It's still cheaper to rent a car for a long trip using Enterprise or other typical car rentals, but for convenience, it might just be easier to grab a Getaround. I've never had any troubles with being overcharged, with cars not being where the App says they are, etc. I'm very happy with Getaround and I hope that more people join, so that there are more cars available in every neighborhood. read more
