This is the second time in a few months that I have reserved a car only to go pick it up and told they have no vehicles or an electric only car with less than 100 miles on the remaining charge. I rented a car in NY with Budget for a day to drive from NY to dc for a couple of hours. I dropped the car at the reagan airport location in dc. They went around the car to check it, and the car was still running, all fine. They told me all good and I left. 15 days after I received a bill for more than 100$ for repairs and tow fees. I called the customer service and they told me that the car was so broken when I dropped it that they had to tow it several days after i returned it. I drove with my kids from NY to dc on the highway for 6 hours without problems, and now Budget tried to scam me to pay for damages that I am not responsible for and probably caused by one of their employees after I returned the car. Maybe there is no damages at all!!! I called their customer service and they transferred me to a manager who told me that they would refund me and it would take 5-7 days. After 2 weeks, no money and i called back today and another manager told me that they do not see in their system that a refund should be provided and of course do not have the full recording of my first call!! Their customer service is so bad and they are lying to customers so they can get red of them on the phone. I checked reviews online, and apparently It happened to several customers. This recent rental experience with Avis has been one of the worst ones I've had. I'm a preferred member and have never had an issue. This place has a weird system in place. My initial encounter with the gentleman once I entered the door wasn't the nicest but I disregarded it. You have to walk and wait in line in the office building lobby next to the actual business front. Then the representatives come from a back door telling the next person to walk outside and around to enter the location. It's weird but not too bothersome because they do a pretty decent job at moving the line along. The best part of the experience was the older woman that checked me out initially. She was extremely helpful and patient. Worst of all, I learned that the staff never checked in the vehicle when I turned it back in. I received a call 3 days later from Avis asking me if I turned in the truck. Then, my app pushed a notification & text saying my rental was overdue. Imagine my panic at the time. The person on the phone then confirms that they do actually have the truck and asked when I turned it in. At this point, I'm mind blown because what are yall even doing??? Then, nearly 19,000 miles were added to my receipt. I only drove about 300 miles or so. Then if you're going to falsify mileage, you didn't even credit me on the extra gas that was in the vehicle...unless somebody drove the truck around after I returned it. Either way, this was the sketchiest encounter I've ever had with Avis and they don't have to worry about me going back to this location. DO NOT RENT A CAR FROM THIS PLACE. I had one of the worst and most stressful customer service experiences I've ever had from this Avis location. I rented in September 2020 and no one came out to inspect the car with me. (They also ran out of cars about five people behind us in line, when we had gotten there half an hour early.) I called inside to ask what we should do and was told we should take pictures of any issues and that's it. Same thing returning the car- no one inspected the car and I was told it was completely fine. I kept all documentation for several months, which became incredibly important when, completely out of the blue in January 2021, I got a bill for over a thousand dollars for damage we had never caused. All we got as proof of this completely manufactured claim were two blurry photos of the entire front bumper being completely removed and other unclear parts of the car that they said we had caused- I think someone would have noticed if we returned the car without a front bumper. And the best part was that the photos were dated from November, when my reservation was from September. I had to spend hours on the phone with Avis fixing their problem, and when they finally withdrew the claim they never said it was their fault, never said sorry, absolutely nothing. This was after literal hours of completely unsympathetic and accusatory conversations with Avis. And then it took another entire month to actually get proper documentation that the false claim against me had been closed. I cannot emphasize enough how much it is NOT worth saving a buck to rent here. They will completely take advantage of you. If you still choose to rent from here, you need to save every single photo and piece of paper they give you for as long as possible. read more

Should have checked the star rating from here before renting, then maybe I would not have been as surprised by the poor service. It took over 20 minutes for them to find the car that I had rented and I had to listen to the staff walkie talkie down to their team where the car was and be told several times that the car was not there. Eventually, they found the car. The car was nice and clean, but once we got on the road we recognized that they charged us for a full tank of gas even though there was less than half of a tank. When we called to notify them (3 different times), no one picked up the phone despite the office being open. When we returned, and I explained the situation to staff checking in the car, they did not seem to care and said it was not their job to handle that. There seemed to be a very clear divide between those operating the check-in counter and those in the parking garage. The car was great (despite the gas), prices were reasonable, and the location was convenient. Where do I start, called and reserved a car paid in full. Went to location couldn't even enter business it was packed with customers waiting. When a few people left we entered , no greeting, no instructions nothing. A customer actually said to go to counter to give name we did, they said ok we'll call you when your ready. Spoke to same customer he said he's been waiting 45 minutes, I couldn't believe it. During our wait time I noticed 2 other customers outside waiting, he said they have been told there car is ready but been outside still waiting. After waiting and watching still more and more people I heard the counter employee tell a customer there is NO cars, there bringing cars over from Baltimore MD. Ok so why take people's phone reservations and take there money when there is NO cars available???? At this point we decided to cancel reservation and book a car elsewhere. The lady at counter says yes I will be reimbursed $375 but it will take 3-5 days. Ok, whatever we left. Tried booking another rental car w another company and my credit card failed. I phoned my credit card company and was told it was charged $375 plus a deposit hold of $100. Now what?!?! So frustrated we left very upset and headed home, no vacation for us. It was really all you could ask for in a rental company! Clean car and place, very quick to get car. No extra charges or hidden fees. Just be careful when you get the insurance- they will try to sell you on insurance but we did it through Orbitz so already had the insurance so just be careful so you don't buy 2 of the same things. ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!!! I don't even know where to start with this Budget location. We arrived to pick up 2 rental SUVs to begin our drive home to Tennessee. Upon checking in with Will, things took a turn for the worse. I was told that they only had one of our vehicles. Now, mind you, we had a total of 6 children and 2 adults on this trip. We were ready to get on the road and Will's response when I informed him that I had confirmation emails and texts for the 2 SUVs was that they thought I double booked. I made these reservations back in January 2022 and now here we are and it's July. Why in the world if they thought I double booked would I not receive a text/phone call/email??? Will's attitude was less that pleasant and when he informed me that he needed the information for the driver of the 2nd SUV, but would not allow her into the office area, we did become very agitated. The other driver was my sister and she had her 9 and 11 year old children with her. They were told they had to wait outside...in the rain. This is NOT acceptable at all. I had to get her license and stay inside with Will and he even needed a signature from my sister and I had to take the paperwork outside. I truly do not understand why she couldn't just go inside and take care of the paperwork for the SUV she drove. They finally did get the 2nd SUV there and we were able to leave about an hour after we arrived. The guys who brought the vehicles up and worked in the garage area were nice and easy to deal with, but not Will. He was not helpful at all and the way the whole thing was handled was poor business. read more

It's not as bad as the reviews here would have you think. You just have to know how to rent a car and you'll be fine. Check the receipt before you initial and take the key: If you return the car late (usually past a 30 minute grace period), yes you will be charge a a fee, often an extra day's worth. if you pick up the car before your pick-up time, you are literally renting the car early. They tried that on me once. I stood there, calculated it out, saw what was happening and called them out on it. Have them change the return time and you'll be fine. Inspect the car before you drive it out of the garage, inside and out, (check the heat in winter, a/c in the summer) and yes that includes the gas tank. If you leave with half a tank, you're only required to bring it back half a tank. Write down ANY damages or scratches you see on the slip, you want to do this! Keep the damage slip for proof for at least two weeks after the rental. That's just common sense. If there's an error in charges, contact customer service via their website forum, they always respond/fix it within 24 hours. If you want to make any changes to your reservation before or during your reservation, call the 800 number. It's just so much easier. No, just because you have a reservation doesn't mean your car will be ready. That's not how car rental companies work anywhere in the US. (Unless you're a high-tier rewards member.) Yes, there is an additional fee if you use a debit card. All the rental companies have this posted on their counter and their websites. Yes, if you are under 25, there is an extra fee. Get a AAA membership to avoid it. Yes you are responsible for any damage that happens to the car, including a flat tire. If you want good rental deals, use Autoslash.com. Get Avis Preferred or Budget Fastbreak. It's free and will save you a lot of headache. They make commission on the upsell, but you can pre-select your choices by having their memberships. Yes this location is high-trafficked, but that's why people use it! I never had a problem with the counter folks. Yes the garage is dark and the garage folks aren't all that friendly. But if you spent 8 hours a day, 5-stories under in mostly darkness, how friendly would you be? Know how to rent a car. You'll be fine. read more

Oh wow - very surprised by the rudeness of the manager in this location!! I had a minor issue (car without a registration, and registration needed by DMV to get parking permit, so stopped there to see if they could get me a car with a valid registration) -- I am a regular budget customer and politely asked if they could help me with his. Manager came, said cars do not have registration, I asked him if someone could double check (I have had this issue before and most car not registred in Florida actually do), and the reply was "I'm done talking to you, you can leave now", I was just blown away by how rude the manager was. I'm putting 3 because I don't think everyone should be a reflection of bad service due to a few bad apples. I am just so tired of this one guy who acts like he hates the world. He ALWAYS charges me incorrectly. When you bring a car back, you should ask if the tank is filled up. That didn't happen. BUT, he did ask for and LOOKED RIGHT AT the rental agreement that said FULL tank. When I brought the car downstairs to the RETURN dept., the guy downstairs WROTE the mileage AND CIRCLED THE FULL SIGN ON THE RENTAL AGREEMENT. When I get upstairs, the guy at the counter tells me a different amount from my agreed upon rental price. I tell him it's wrong and show him the rental agreement. He says I have to charge you what's on the computer and THEN REFUND YOU. I asked, "can't you just delete that and start over", he says no. I know this is incorrect because it's happened before but I JUST DON'T FEEL LIKE DEALING WITH THE ATTITUDE THIS GUY EXUDES SO I JUST PAY. After I paid, he then proceeds to tell me how the computer automatically places a fee in for the gas. I said but you looked at the agreement and saw that it was full so you could have changed it. What if I didn't have the extra amount in my bank? What if you overcharge me ON PURPOSE and something doesn't clear in my account all because you just don't care about treating people wrong. The customer service is like one or two and that's being nice! I don't understand how people don't understand that to have a job, you have to have people support your job! It's hand and hand. You have a service, I need service. But some people act like they don't need you or your business. To that, I say, shame on you. You should be thankful for the business your business gets. And just like good business spreads a good word for a good deed, so does bad business. As i am sitting here typing this freakin' Yelp review because I'm pissed off by this attitude over and over again. And clean the cars! I'm tired of getting dirty cars. Unfortunately all the reviews are pretty accurate. Only consider this if there are really no other rental options. I've been renting here since 2014 and the reason this location gets any customers is because they are cheaper than their competitors. Extra cleaning during Covid really? Then how come the previous customers sunglasses, paperwork and dog hair was all over the car? They randomly charged me for five days extra rental plus late fees. I even sent them a photo with date stamp and mileage showing the mistake. Now I need to send them my bank account statement showing the extra charge. I'm now on day 3 and several frustrating phone calls with people saying things like I can offer you a 30% refund. I had a confirmed reservation for my rental car on June 15th and was supposed to pick the car up at 1030 am on August 5th when we arrived at the office there was a line outside the building half a block long and only 2 people helping customers. we arrived at 1030 and after waiting for nearly 2 hours one of the attendants told us they didn 't have any cars available and could not tell us how long until the next delivery. They don't deserve the one star! But there is no minus 5 to give them. I rented a car on line on Memorial Day Weekend for Saturday morning pickup. I go to their location on L, which is the bigger site. I stand on line, it was raining for over an hour...finally, i am third in line. The manager and a young woman come out and tell us they have no cars left! After waiting in the rain for over an hour, as you can imagine, no happiness here. They tell us to go to their other site on Connecticut Ave, a lot in the back of a hotel. I jump in a cab, already exhausted and disappointed and i go to 4400 Connecticut. By far, in all my car renting experiences, this is the dirtiest, most unwelcoming, scary and shady people working in it. I had rented a truck, the one they have for me is FILTHY!!! Dented and scratched everywhere...did i say dirty inside and out??? Really, during COVID 19 when you are supposed to clean the cars carefully. The Guy who is supposed to be cleaning is sprawled on a chair with what looks like a spray bottle of dirty water...really GROSS! I have to go somewhere, so luckily I am carrying LYSOL wipes with me. I start cleaning and taking pix of the truck because they are not going to accuse me of banging it up. I sanitize the truck which also smells of smoke, and finally take off. They will not disclose clear instructions and they are either poorly trained or completely un-empowered to support clients with their questions. Vehicles weren't ready for numerous clients and one particular lady was told hers wouldn't be ready for 5 hours. When customers started to express their concerns they kept saying it's not their problem and if you want to give attitude we can return the same. This Budget location is my go to spot for car rentals. The establishment appears to have made many changes, since the last reviews. My experiences has been positive. The staff conduct themselves as professionals, and services has been reliable. There has been a few times, I have rented a car on extremely short notice, and the staff has always been able to accommodate me. The cars I have received are clean and without damage. And I never been charged for returning the car late, although I will admit, my lateness does not exceed an hour. For my next car rental, I will be returning to this L Street location. read more

I arrived for my reservation highly annoyed because I'd tried to call repeatedly and no one answered. Once I arrived, one employee was working the desk, and the phone was ringing off the hook, even though I could hear at least two other people in the back office chatting with each other about matters unrelated to work. The couple in front of me was having a tense discussion with the sole employee working the counter about a $200 late fee for being two hours late. After they spoke with a manager, it seemed they had agreed on something more reasonable. I was justifiably apprehensive by this point that this was going to be a lousy experience. However, a second employee came out front and was pleasant and prompt in getting me into a car. Once outside, the car was pretty banged up but certainly drivable. She took time to note all the body damage and asked if I'd rather take another car. I was fine with it because I just needed transportation for 24 hours, so I agreed to take it. The car itself smelled strongly of smoke, which she had also noted on the paperwork. It wasn't quite the experience it should have been for a rental of over $100 for 24 hours. I chose this location due to its proximity to my son's dorm, and I'll try to find another company/location next time. Still, it ended better than it began, so 3 stars for that. read more

What a cluster. Was to pick up a car at closing but had to modify the reservation for pick up at opening the next day. Agent said that only the corporate call center can modify reservations. Ok, I call the corporate call center while in the lobby of this place and they tell me that oh no, only the franchise location can modify the reservation. The franchise agent is kind and tries to address by calling his boss who says no problem, we can honor the the original rate. I pick up the car next morning to be told that since I'm picking up the car the next morning (1 minute into opening verse 1 minute before closing the night before), the rate is more than double the original rate. The agent is about as kind or customer friendly as a fence post. I bring the car back the next morning (waiting for them to open btw) and am charged a third rate that is 25% higher than the second rate I was quoted. Wow! Three different rates despite being assured I would be given the original rate. Now that's a way to run a business! Fortunately the corporate customer service rep was a bit more accommodating and certainly knew customer service. Car pick up was almost as entertaining. I'm given the damage slip by the not so customer friendly customer service rep saying that "Phil" checked the car out, here's all damage, sign it. I politely ask for the slip and the opportunity to check the car out before signing. I was informed that if it damage was there, Phil found it! I have so much reason to trust this franchise so far. Lo and behold, a scratch on the hood through the paint that wasn't on the slip. Phil may not have had enough coffee that morning. Rent a horse or a bike, or hitch hike. Some of the worst customer service I have ever experienced and these people that work there know they are pieces of work. They are very arrogant and carry with them some sense of entitlement. I was greeted with an 'Avis or Budget?' question and then asked to wait while the guy sipped his water and then asked again 'Avis or Budget?' WTF?!? I then waited for over 35 minutes for the car to be made available despite having a reserved pick up time. Was told that my reserved vehicle type was not available and had to pay the same amount. We had a reservation on a Saturday but when we arrived there were 5+ people waiting for cars, and no cars available. One person had been waiting for over two hours. The customer service representative told us that our reservation did not guarantee us a car, that she could not call us when a car was available, and that she could not guarantee that any car would be available before the location closed. When we called customer service to see if they could transfer our reservation, they offered to transfer it to another location that was closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Everyone who had a reservation was livid, and the rental car company offered no solution. We were blown away by how badly this company is treating its customers! read more

I had the worst service interaction I have ever had with Will. I waited in line for over an hour to be told they were out of compact vehicles. I asked for a courtesy upgrade and he refused. I asked to speak with his manager and he refused. I calmly expressed my frustration and then he threatened that I wouldn't get a car if I didn't stop talking and wait outside. I am done Ronny. I don't care how convenient this place is. They are cheats and liars. I returned a car right on time and their computer systems were down so I didn't get a receipt. Big mistake! They said I returned the car over an hour after I actually did-- no doubt the time their computer started working again. And because there is no conception of customer service, the employees left the extra 28 dollar charge on my account. Thx guys! They also hand wrote in the contract that the gas tank was not full. Well silly me for trusting they would honor that. They charged me for not filling up to a full tank even though I filled it up exactly to where it had been, no doubt since their computer system was never updated. CAREFUL, DO NOT BOOK. I booked a car for the weekend, when I came to pick it up the mess in the front desk was already apparent. When I returned it two days later, I was to,d by the front desk that the system is down so they will have to send me the receipt by email. I was asked to park the car in the return location, and was also told that I will get some money refunded as I returned it with more gas than I took it with (nice-I didn't know they do that) After two days, when I did not get the receipt, I tried to contact the branch. Getting them to answer the phone was impossible. When I finally go them, I was out in hold for 15 minutes until the call was disconnected. Meanwhile, I noticed a charge o $400 more than what my rental agreement was. I called again the next day, and was put on hold again. When someone did answer, I was told that they need to "locate the car and make sure that it arrived". Really? I need to wait, with a heavy charge on my credit card until they will search for the car? They should have fixed their records when I returned it and not hold me hostage until they find what they did with the car I returned to them in time. I went to the rental office and the manager refused to talk to me. I tried to show him the location record on my phone when I returned the car and an employee told him she remembers me and nothing helped. After 5 days and hours of phone calls and an unpleasant visit to the branch, I got the phone call from the branch manager saying that they found the car, they rented it out to someone else and they are willing to give me my money back.
