We were lucky enough to find Bill on our first attempt to locate a clock repair shop. It was about three years ago when we took Bill our first clock. It is a late 1890's German clock one of two clocks from my parents estate. I can remember the clock on the wall when I was a child and loved the tone of the chime and the ticking of time passing. I was nervous to leave the clock with someone I did not know, until I met Bill. You could feel his enthusiasm and we were impressed by his knowledge and his willingness to answer all our questions. Bill is a true craftsman and passionate about his work. Over the last three years Bill has cleaned and serviced seven clock for us. He is honest as the day is long, his work is meticulous, and he goes the extra mile to educate his clients on the care and maintenance of their clocks. The most recent clock we took to Bill was a beautiful Vienna style 2 movement 1890's German clock. The case was warped, coming apart and had other damage. I have had Gesswein's Clocks twice since i moved to Scottsdale. The first time was two and a half years ago when we moved in. I asked him to set up the clock since I did not trust the movers. He arrived promptly, got the clock up and running and replaced a door key and winding crank that the packers had managed to lose/ Today he came back for a full sevice call. He left carefully written instructions on what I should do to improve the accuracy. As he was working he gave many good tips on how to care for a clock and especially what to avoid doing. I have an Ansonia Loire mantle clock that dates from about 1910. It belonged to my grandmother, so it's important to me. It has never run very well. I took it to Bill, who cleaned and oiled it. I have had a love of antique clocks especially German and French clocks since I was probably 9 years old and have been collecting them for about 30 years. There is something almost a little romantic and certainly warm and nostalgic about a pendulum driven clock. Before I started working with Gesswein's I have either been to most of the other clock shops and have had lengthy conversation with them. I am very passionate about these old clock for all they represent of the way they are made, engineered, and thoughtfully crafted. I believe what set Gesswein's apart from the pack is not just his knowledge and passion of clocks, more over it would be his people skills and the way he shares that knowledge and passion. I bought a pendulum wall clock about 30 years ago, and since then have had interactions with both clock shops & small clock repair places, for cleaning or shopping for another clock. Past concerns included questions about prices or value, the level of competence of workpeople, and the timeliness of services. I have had issues with one or more of these with everyone I have dealt with in the past. So when my clock stopped working, I researched repair places on Yelp & Google. I found good reviews of Gesswein's Clocks and decided to try him. My clock was diagnosed and then fixed on time and for the estimated price. Bill's warmth, knowledge, and passion have been noted in previous reviews and I concur on all accounts. While I was picking up my clock, I browsed around his shop and found a gorgeous 19th century clock that I fell in love with. I found the price very fair and gave him a down payment. It was refurbished and ready a week before he said it would be. In the course of putting it on the wall, I lost hold of it and it fell, exploding into more than a dozen pieces. I was heartbroken, but called him to fess up and see whether he could put it back together. I brought in the pieces and he said he would give it a try, and then gave me some good-natured grief. In three weeks he had it reassembled. It is on my wall now, keeping perfect time. I could not recommend Gesswein's Clocks more strongly. I've had 2 old clocks refurbished and repaired by Bill Gesswein. They were in disrepair, had cracks and one was even missing an integral part. I originally thought the wall clock would only be used for piece parts. He completely repaired them both inside and out and even found a wood part that was missing to complete the upper part of the clock. They were cleaned, oiled, repaired and look like new. One of the clocks is really old and required a lot of work. These clocks both run like new and look beautiful. Bill is an extremely friendly and likable person and treats each person that comes in to his shop as a new friend. He works hard, has integrity and absolutely loves what he does. Without knowing Bill or having a reference for his work I phoned him to have a look at a grandfather clock owned by my employers which had stopped working. I've worked for my employers for over 3 decades and I am entrusted to make intelligent choices. There was no question that Bill knew the business from the questions he asked on the telephone about this particular brand of clock. Upon arrival he explained that the movement and all moving parts needed a complete rebuild/overhaul because of lack of tri-annual maintenance. With great hesitation and unable to contact my boss to 'buy into this,' I gave him permission to do the work. He gave me a reasonable price up front and delivered and installed the rebuilt parts before the deadline he gave me. He explained things to me about the care and maintenance of the clock that neither my boss or I understood about the clock. The clock has worked and kept correct time since the repair 3 months ago. When he came to install the repaired parts I brought a vintage 1700's clock from Paris which was dry, split in many areas, the face was in need of repair and it just needed a lot of TLC. Several weeks later I picked up my clock and the price was less than quoted - because 'he had fun' rebuilding my clock. I recently took a battery-operated old-style wall pendulum-style clock to Mr. Gesswein. It hadn't been working for awhile, and I didn't know anything about this clock as I inherited it. However, the pendulum bob is different, the weights look different, and my old clock works were not stamped "Seth Thomas" and now they are.
