The food was unique and good. Fred our server was friendly and attentive. When we arrived, the host informed us that we could be seated, but we would only be allowed to be at the table until 5:30 (it was 4pm) as there was a 5:30 reservation for the table. If the host was concerned as to whether we would overlap another reservation, they shouldn't have seated us. Regardless, you don't tell your guests that they have limited time to eat!!! Showed a serious lack of professionalism from the host and from management to allow the host to tell customers they have limited time to eat. Great experience in a beautiful area near the botanical gardens. Our server, Fred, got us off to the right start with a bottle of wine from Arizona that was a white blend. The appetizer may have been everyone's favorite part of the meal as none of us had ever had anything like it. The melted cheese and corn was unique in flavor and our fears of the wasabi overtaking the dish were forgotten after one bite. Dinner for my sister and I were the steaks which were cooked perfectly. Unfortunately this place gave my boyfriend and I violent food poisoning. Yesterday we went there for lunch and shared the oyster mushrooms. He also had a burger and I the rice noodle stir fry. We were both vomiting and defecating all night and day. So bad to the point I had to go to the ER in a city I am visiting. Hopefully I'll be discharged so I am able to catch my 6 am flight. We didn't have reservations, so walked in, and they were able to seat us at the bar after a few minutes. You do have to have tickets to the Botanical Gardens to get inside (I think), as it's inside the entrance. We got the fried cauliflower and shishito peppers - I think this was my fav dish of the night. Probably some of the best fried cauliflower I have ever had. One of the coolest places in Phoenix especially during the cooler months when you can sit on the patio. What a lovely venue! We made reservations for our anniversary dinner on a Saturday night. We sat on the patio and loved the view. Service was absolutely top-notch. The drink menu is fun - signature cocktails, local brews and a nice wine list. I started with the Sapphire- vodka, blue curaçao and ginger ale with a white meringue cookie floating on top. A bit sweet, but fun. For dinner we had local canned beers, the Hubbs had the blueberry sour and I had a white chocolate wheat. Very good. Our starter was the chorizo Brie- so good! We could have made a meal of it! We split a small root veggie salad. The dressing was a toasted sesame we both loved. For our entrees, I had the cheese tortellini with chicken and mushrooms. The Hubbs got the Teriyaki NY Strip. Mine was huge! Grilled chicken breast atop the tortellini in a mushroom sauce. Very yummy, and half came home with me. We were disappointed with the steak. It was tough, which was surprising at that price point and the steak knife provided was not very sharp. It was flavorful- the teriyaki was just right, and served with a wasabi hollandaise sauce, sticky rice and baby bok choy. This restaurant is located at the middle of the arboretum in Phoenix. What a fun place with lots of vegan options and meat sides for those meat eaters. The flavors of my Thai noodle bowl were spot on and just enough heat to make it interesting. Lighting outside was terrible for pictures so don't judge this place by the customer photo. My photo was so bad looking I refuse to post it! If you happen to be here at Christmas- get tickets to the luminaries event and reserve your table for dinner at Gertrudes. My niece invited my sister and I to the botanical gardens for a mid morning stroll. We didn't have breakfast so by the time we were done in the actual gardens we were famished. As we were getting ready to leave the gift shop we noticed gertrudes so we all agreed to have lunch there. I'm so happy we did. Gertrudes is one of those places that welcomes you with a wonderful atmosphere great service and amazing food. We ordered the elote fritters & bread platter to begin our meal. We came here on New Year's Day for brunch. We didn't realize until after we been seated that brunch was only served on the weekends. Oops! Should've done more research. Anyway, I ordered a Bloody Mary and the hamburger, medium well. The Bloody Mary you need to drink with a spoon as there's so many herbs in there, it literally clogs the straw, making it impossible to drink through the straw. Not to mention all the little specks it leaves on your teeth. (I'm not joking about that.) After a while, you just give up. The hamburger was decent, if under cooked. Definitely more on the medium to medium rare spectrum. It was chat broiled so it had good flavor and it was huge, making it impossible to finish in one sitting. The vegetarians in our group raved over the risotto, not so much over the polenta. The green chili hummus was just so-so. Not much flavor to it. The best thing about Gertrude's is the patio, surrounded by the garden. Beautiful location. read more

This place was pretty overrated and overpriced for what it is. We came here around 4-something after visiting the desert botanical gardens and since we didn't have a reservation, they initially were reluctant to seat us, but managed to squeeze us in and let us know that they would need the table back by 5 for a reservation. The restaurant was pretty empty but we were seated on the outdoor patio. The view was pretty nice which is probably why the restaurant received high ratings from other reviewers and service was good too, but the food was waaaay overpriced. The tortellini was just okay -- kind of tasted like a microwave pasta from the store. Our bill was over $100 for just 3 dishes, one of them being a salad. You're pretty much just paying for the view when eating here. 2.5 stars; rounding up because the service was good and they were able to seat us without turning us away. read more

I was in Phoenix for a day and stopped by Gertrude's for a quick lunch before heading to the airport. Loved the place and the service. I ordered the charcuterie board for lunch and it was very filling and tasty. The meat was a bit salty for my taste so this was the only part of the plate I ended up not finishing. A nice little brunch/lunch spot inside the botanical garden. The weather was pleasant so we sat outdoors under an umbrella for brunch. The veggie frittata was good and had a healthy helping of filling but tasted like a flattened omelette...so nothing so unique. The side salad was fresh and not overdressed. The French toast was hearty and filled with ingredients and not too sweet. The veggie wrap was okay but probably too many greens and not enough other fillings. But the homemade chips were crispy and great. Service was nice and they had a musician playing the guitar. Overall a pleasant experience! Not as Hot as they think they are. For a pretty overpriced bar & grill style restaurant that seems to be very popular, in my view they've got work to do. My pulled pork sandwich arrived floating in a lake of cole slaw dressing. The bottom half of a quite fancy bun was sopping-wet soaked. I salvaged it by using multiple bar napkins, first mopping up the puddle then inverting the sandwich and squeezing out the soaked bun into more bar napkins. In retrospect I should have sent it back. The Basil-Berry lemonade was pretty good, but are we now paying $4.50 for a glass of lemonade? I will try them again next time I'm at the Botanical gardens, but sheesh! read more

The reason for the review is probably the same reason the place has only 3.5 stars. The food is very basic, using similar ingredients throughout, and a bit pricey. But, it's also pretty good so no major complaint there. The two additional stars were docked due to the heightened amount of pretentiousness and the curt manner of the waitress. The place is staffed accordingly so there should be no issues, but there were. And rather than return, I just want to make sure you know what you are getting involved in because the food is, as stated, pretty good. Not fantastic, and service wasn't good. You decide. read more

Really enjoyed brunch after walking the trails in the botanical gardens of Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, AZ. It was unexpected to see a really refreshing menu that goes beyond the basic restaurant food. I enjoyed a salad of cucumbers, jicama, and watermelon! I added boiled shrimp for protein and it was just so pretty to look and so yum to devour. I guess on my next visit to the Garden, we shall meet again. read more

Came here for brunch on a weekend prior to browsing the gardens. Great food, including some very unique options. The biscuits and gravy and BLT were especially good. Decor is a bit out-dated, though it's nice if you're able to sit on the patio during good weather. Also, there are no restrooms especially close - you have to walk past the main entrance to use the common ones for the gardens...if they're open, which they weren't when we were there. A beautiful restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. Came with with friends for lunch. They have a smaller lunch menus then what you find when you look them up online, but ask if something you saw online is also on their special menu that day. They also have a Brunch menu served on weekends. Located past the ticket area of the Botanical Gardens you don't need to buy a ticket but it is polite to let the security people know your just going to Gertrude's. The menus is very southwest so there are spices that you may need to ask about in the food. Which is what I had to do, because I have problems with hot Mexican spices. Our waiter was wonderful and very patient with me asking questions. I ended up having the cobb salad and I ordered chicken in my salad to make sure I wouldn't have a reaction to any spices. I really like their watermelon green tea. We all had a very relaxing lunch and never felt rushed. We all felt that the food was good but expensive for the portions. I added chicken to my salad which was $10.00 extra. (Surprise) It was fine. Would I go back? Yes especially if I am already at the Gardens and get hungry. read more

While you stroll along and observe amazing varieties of cacti in the Botanical Gardens you may quench your thirst and fill your tummy. Go have lunch at Gertrudes in the Botanical Gardens. On a sunny day we enjoyed the patio with cacti all around and curved bill thrashers and cactus wren singing and building nests in cactus --- it is early spring in the desert. Good entertainment! Relaxing! Musing! Food was good, tried the grain, seed and passion fruit salad. Wife and a friend feasted on a big plate of arugula and date salad. Indeed, I tried and really loved the all natural prickly pear cactus drink, very refreshing. At the end of the day we went back to the patio for happy hour and again watched the birds. Just had an amazing meal at Gertrude's. Started out with the fried cauliflower & shishito peppers. OMG! I had to stop myself from finishing it because it wouldn't have left any room for the other wonderful dish I wanted to have: the wild boar. This last dish comes in a bowl, wild boar delicately seasoned over a sweet buttery tamale, accompanied by a sea of black bean puree. It tasted like my mom's cooking: Delicious and very heart warming, very comforting. Back to the cauliflower-they're sweet, sour and have quite a kick to them. I started my meal with a hazy IPA and ended it with a lovely local tempranillo that paired beautifully with the boar. Christine was a grade A server, coming around often to check up on me and to help me decide on the perfect meal. Thanks, Christine! You're amazing. A friend and I came to Gertrude's after a nice walk in the garden and was welcomed warmly at the bar. The overall ambiance this Friday evening around 6 was lively but not too rowdy....Lots of snowbirds we suspected given the age of the crowd. Actual tables were reserved and the wait for one would have been 40-45 minutes and the outdoor patio seating area also seemed quite full. I'd probably sit at the bar next time as well because service was fast and you get a birds eye view of the hustle and bustle of the restaurant. Our bartender/waiter was friendly nice and gave a good recommendation for a wine. So we settled in with our drinks and had a great time. We didn't eat dinner and instead went for the apps - (gf) smoked and fried tofu with achiote and mango Chile chutney and a side of fingerling potatoes. Both were very good and I appreciated how the menu seemed exotically Arizonan-fusion with ingredients of the Sonoran desert like agave, nopales, achiote and some Asian-inspired tastes like kimchi, chutney, tofu. The wine list is good and diverse with several as wines across white and red. This is evidenced by the average 12 dollar/glass prices but the pours are generous. The dessert list looks intriguing and that's probably what I'll head for next time. The Abuleta's Tres Leches and the Sweet beets cheesecake looks especially tantalizing for the taste buds. The mains / entree list had a good number of good looking meat dishes but it is very pricey. The cheapest is an $18 burger which sitting near the kitchen we noticed was always the order up. Overall a nice place to splurge a bit after a nice afternoon in the garden. But maybe stick with drinks and people watching ! read more

Just starting off I didn't like the lunch menu when all the dinner menu looks good on yelp.... ~after walking for multiple hours in the garden and then 45 mins wait the lunch menu is not worth it. I recommend getting food at the cafe. The menu layout is not good as well as I don't know why steak is an add on but hummus is a main ??? Maybe I was just in a bad mood from the heat but I just didn't really enjoy my experience. Especially seeing good options on the yelp page but they said it's only offered for dinner. So I ended up ordering the 6piece tofu and hummus plate. The tofu was actually so filling I couldn't finish it. It was just too much protein and not enough anything else. Glad I had the cucumber and carrots from the hummus plate to help the tofu go down. The flavor of the tofu was actually good just a bit too dry for the heat. I would only recommend checking out the dinner menu. The lunch menu is not even worth it when you are hungry and tired from the sun. read more

This place is the Holy Grail of dining: A reasonably priced, darn near farm-to-table menu of local meats, produce, dairy and drinks. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and un-pretentious. You can't beat the views of the Desert Botanical Garden from every window, and the patio is huge and well-shaded. There's just nothing not to like! Sunday brunch is well worth the drive, whether you select from the Breakfast or Lunch menu. Yum! read more

Not your average museum cafe - Gertrudes was an absolute delight. Swung in for a mini snack before our Instagram afternoon of cactuses! The carrot hummus n arugula salad was yummy. My son devoured the chicken fingers and we both enjoyed our afternoon cocktail - French Rose' for me and blackberry Shirley temple for my lil valentine. It was lovely and the ambiance and service was spectacular. Love that everything is Farm to Table! This was the best meal I had on my trip to Phoenix! Visiting Phoenix from Oregon it was hard to find clean eating and gluten free options. This food was delicious. I had their arugula salad and braised beef, my daughter and husband had the tamales, soup and Mac and Cheese all of these menu items were cooked perfectly and were gluten free. Our waiter was respectful and warm. He was very prompt and accommodating. The desserts we devoured were the donuts which were served warm with dipping sauces and the blueberry and lemon custard. The donuts were delicious! The custard was possibly made with blueberry compote which made it a little too sweet and not as fresh tasting. The atmosphere was beautiful surrounded by the dessert botanical gardens. I will definitely be going back to Gertrudes soon! read more

The food was great and our server, "Abby," was super friendly and pretty on top of things. They have a decent selection of wines and beers, especially local beers. The portions are pretty big. I have a HUGE sweet tooth, but couldn't find it in me to eat dessert. My wife had the chicken and mushroom tortellini and it was so good. The mushrooms are locally sourced and the mushroom flavor was pronounced, but not over-the-top (I love mushrooms, so I'm mushroom-flavor-biased). The chicken was perfect. I had the braised beef. The veggies were great: Came with little fingerling 'tatoes, carrots, and brussel sprouts. The "micro" cilantro on top of the beef was surprisingly intense, but not overpowering. I shouldn't have finished nearly the entire plate, but couldn't help it. That's why dessert didn't happen. We'd been talking about eating at Gertrude's for years. We bought yearly memberships for the Desert Botanical Garden and passed the entrance to the restaurant each time we've visited the DBG. So glad we finally made reservations. read more

Decided to stop here before meeting with our wedding coordinator at the Botanical Garden. We arrived at 3 which is when dinner was said to start. However upon arrival. We were informed that it wasn't going to be taking place for an additional 30 minutes. We decided to stay and just order a drink and a couple of appetizers. 2 glasses of wine, 1 cocktail and 1 soda. And we ordered the eloté fritters alongside with the "morsels". The fritters were extremely overcooked and only tasted like crema and burnt oil. And the morsels tray had undercooked floppy tortilla chips. The waiter never came back to check on us as we paid as the food came out. And drinks were never refilled. There were literally only two other tables of a total of 4 people. There was no excuse to the waiters tardiness. For the price point I am very disappointed. The only reason this is getting the rating it is. Is because I appreciate the lengths they went to for sanitizing and social distancing. I don't imagine I will ever come back. read more
