These guys are the best! As an owner of a 2011 Mini, it can be frustrating to find a mechanic who knows his/her way around these little cars that come up with a lot of problems 100k+ miles on. Going to Herb Chambers in Boston was driving me out of my mind! This garage is fair and friendly. I came up short on oil and although they didn't have an appointment open to change it, they topped me off until an opening the next week so I could drive to and from work. The only downside is that they get more business than they can handle, meaning it can be 2+ weeks before you can get into the shop. read more

After years of owning my Porsche and going to multiple shops with horrible repairs that led to different problems, I've learned my lesson and now stick to the real professionals: German Performance. Dealing with Marc is always a pleasure as he's smart, and a very amiable guy. You pay for what you get with these guys and that's great, no bullshit service. My only issue is that it takes them a while to get back to voicemails and calls but I assume that's because they are very busy and take pride in their work. Highly recommended!! read more

The service was so good at German Performance that I felt compelled to create an account here at Yelp to write this up. The owner, Marc, is fantastic. He was super helpful in coordinating a complex scenario while I've been out of the country. I needed to have a car held in storage and then towed to his place for service. He's been super straightforward and honest over the phone and always up-front on the price. He set time lines, communicated them effectively and delivered on time. I wholeheartedly encourage anyone with a Porsche to head over to his garage. M read more

I own a 2002 BMW M3 E46. I don't normally write reviews, but GPS has done an exceptional, quick, and reasonably priced job twice in less than two months, and their work and shop needs to be recommended and highlighted in some way. My most recent episode had my starter dying over Veteran's Day weekend. With nowhere to tow my car, I parked it outside their shop, hoping to negotiate with them on Monday and schedule it eventually. They were extremely accommodating, fixing my car and back on the road, squeezing me into their packed schedule. I personally feel that they are honest, trustworthy, and will always do what is necessary first, while also advising of likely potential future issues. This is reinforced by the fact that everyone who works there works on the car. You may talk mostly with Rob or Marc or billing and parts, but knowing those two also work on cars adds credibility and flexibility to be able to discuss with anyone there issues you want to address. You won't feel pressured into doing anything either. I'm glad that I found out about this shop and I think that their following and reputation will continue to grow. I don't plan on taking my car anywhere else. Word of advice: if your car needs work, it'll take 1-2 weeks to get it scheduled. Call early! Also, if you have the parts, I'm told they will do the work at their rate - very fair arrangement! read more

Marc has been a wonderful mechanic ever since I moved to Boston two years ago with my Porsche 968. It is a rare model and has had a host of problems but Marc has been able to keep her in great running shape through it all, at a fraction of the cost other shops would have likely charged. I've been to a number of shops all over the country and German Performance Service has been the best! read more

Took my Mini to GPS to get an oil leak fixed. The correct repair was made promptly for a reasonable charge. Mini's are highly complex autos that are difficult to service and GPS is up to the task. The only real alternative, the dealers, simply cannot match GPS. They also noticed a couple of side issues and dealt with them. A holistic approach to my car's health? Nice! If your Mini is out of its warranty period, GPS are your service guys. read more

One of friend referred me to Rob here at German performance and it has truly been an awesome experience working with him. I have been going here for years now. They are honest, knowledgeable and reasonably priced. I highly recommend them, Marc and his team is just simply awesome ! read more

I can't say enough about German Performance Service. I dread bringing my X5 in for service so much that I avoid and neglect it. These guys did an amazing job. I'm completely satisfied. Bravo! read more

Excellent shop!!! The staff (esp. Rob, but everyone else who I worked with) are very knowledgeable (IMHO) had were extremely helpful each time I spoke with them. I bought a used 330xi in manual and the clutch went a few weeks after I bought it. The car was covered under an extended warranty, so I brought it to Herb Chambers to have it looked at and was told that I needed a new clutch and flywheel to the tune of around $3k, and that it wasn't covered by the warranty. On the recommendation of a friend, I took it to GPS for a second opinion and told that only the clutch needed to be replaced, which they could do about a third of the cost. They fixed the clutch and I have since put about 20k miles on the car w/o any trouble. I've since brought the car in for various maintenance tasks and each found them very honest and reasonable, which is hard to come by. I since moved out of state and was looking for an opinion on new tires for my car. I decided to call GPS on the off-chance that I could get their opinion even though I wasn't going to go through them. Rob was very generous with his time, not only going through the details of different tire options but also offering to review auto shops in my area to help me find a new place to bring my car. Overall, I was very impressed at how honest Rob and others at GPS are and at how reasonable their prices are. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is looking for somewhere in the area to take their BMW (or other German car). read more

Marc and his crew are masters of their craft. If you are looking for a mechanic shop that does good work with a quick turn around time, look no further than German Performance Service. As a new E30 owner they were able to get my car back in proper form and give me an attack list of things I can fix on my own. It is refreshing to find a mechanic shop that enables its clientele instead of misleading them. Not only do they have access to a wider variety of parts than most dealerships, they also have a pedigree that many repair departments lack. If you have a BMW and you live near Boston, it would be foolish to take your car anywhere else. read more

Marc and the rest of the gang are great at their craft. You can talk to them about any aspect of your car. They show the replaced parts and freely give their time to explain the progression of a failure. Their patience with dumb questions is very much appreciated. GPS knows the cars they work on inside and out and their diagnostic skills are great. BMW and Porsche owners are fortunate to have such great assets available to us as Marc and GPS are. read more

I hesitate to write this review because once word gets around it is going to impossible to get my car into GPS! Marc and his team are performance car enthusiasts. They are knowledgable, practical and reasonably priced. As importantly, they are genuinely honest and nice people. I really enjoy bringing my car in to catch up and see what projects they are working on. I won't let anyone else touch my '89 911. read more

I brought my car in to have the clutch cables replaced--which they did a great job on. At the same time the "check engine" light was on which they were told about. When I picked up the car, the cables were fixed but the "check engine" light was still on. They told me all it took to fix the light was to reset the switch which they would do the next time I brought it in. Huh??? read more

Just got my MINI COOPER S '03 serviced and had some minor things repaired. Marc and his team did a great job and graciously answered my questions. Will definitely return for future service. read more

I don't let anyone touch my MINI Cooper S besides the dealers and German Performance Service. I had my oil feed line to the turbo replaced and they did a great job. They are very knowledgeable about MINIs and answered all my questions. read more

These guys are great! Fixed my car quickly and for quarter the cost of the dealer.

I've now been back to GPS five or six times, and without exception they deliver an impeccable service experience, thoughtfully diagnosing issues, recommending what's necessary and helpful, and explicitly NOT recommending anything extraneous. Work is done to the highest standards and priced fairly. As someone who isn't afraid to DIY a lot of repairs, I've found GPS very open to helping me figure out what is DIY-appropriate, and what might need their help (and they've bailed me out of a tricky situation or two when complications arose). Truly, they're a stellar shop. Too bad yelp doesn't allow six stars. read more

My radiator hose blew this morning on my way to work. I called German Performance Service to see if they might have one, as the other two locations I tried did not. He ordered it for me over the phone, and had it delivered within two hours, and at a great price. A life saver for sure! read more

Look no further, these are your guys. Marc and Rob are patient, thorough and will take amazing care of your car and your peace of mind. They are talented, honest and willing to go the extra mile. I brought my Mini in for a specific issue, which they fixed, but they were able to help with tires as well. I'll be back for all my Mini needs. read more

Marc and Now Rob (Contact Guy) are the Best. Every Spring when I roll my 1997 BMW 328 IC Convertible out of Storage. I clutch My Chest Thinking This is the Big one Wezzie. Rob and Marc are always Dead on what the car needs if anything and the price is very very reasonable. read more

Hands down the best place to take your Mini Cooper! I have worked with GPS several times now and can always expect fast and professional service at a fair price from Mark and his team. They are quick to respond and are wonderful to work with. I would highly recommend them to anyone. I'm so glad I discovered GPS! Thanks so much guys! read more

This is a professional and integrity-driven shop. I spoke with Marc and he gave me over the phone advice that saved me quite a bit of money. We are new to the area and having a BMW shop that is incredibly knowledgeable and skilled to deal with is so reassuring. I will always come here for my BMW repair needs....so glad GPS is here in the area. Makes it nice when a team is knowledgable, honest and approachable without the pressure and hard sell of the dealership. Don't hesitate. These guys are the real deal. read more

We couldn't be more pleased with our experience at German Performance Service. After dealing with what we believed to be a dead battery, and then after failed attempts to jump start the car, what we believed to be a malfunctioning starter or alternator, we had our car towed to GPS after business hours. They called the next morning to say that the engine only required a new connection to the starter, a part that cost $40. They billed for one hour of service, the replacement part and a replacement tail light bulb, which they noticed was out. They also fully charged up the battery and topped off the oil without any charge and without our request. They offer a complete service offering, and we couldn't be more impressed with their integrity and ability to have the car repaired so quickly. This will be our dedicated service provider in the future. read more

These people are as good as the raving reviews they receive here. It's very hard to find honest, genuine and all around nice people that don't try to charge you $$ at every opportunity they have. They actually went as far as counseling me on how to manage my repair in the most cost effective way. Marc and Rob, thanks a lot guys! read more

I have been there several times, with two BMWs. They are shade tree mechanics working indoors, and I have not been (to not make a pun) steered wrong a single time. They are not looking to run up your bill, and they maintain a genuine, intellectual interest in the problem you present them with. I have been a sucker for whatever an authorized dealer claimed. If they said I needed a right -handled veebeelfeetzer for $1000 I would've said go right ahead. GPS, on two occasions, gave me email instructions on what to do, and it worked, and I'm someone who is unable to do more with a car than wash it. Feel free to contact me directly. I am the real thing, not a shill, not a relative, but a customer who has been pleased with exceptional service. Could they screw up sometime? Sure, but they'd ponder on what went wrong - be happy to talk to anyone at all. Peter Stern read more

I own a cherished Z3 M Coupe and after years of frustration and doubt with the BMW dealership, a chance encounter with another Coupe owner turned me on to Marc and GPS. I love the guy and this place. Honest, expert, fastidious, technically proficient, this is where to bring your car. There should be 6 stars for GPS! read more

Bar none - this is the best automobile shop in Boston and certainly the place to take a German car for any needs. I have a 2008 Mini John Cooper Works with less than 40,000 miles. Given my brother specializes in German autos and also owns his own auto repair shop on the west coast, servicing my car at a high-quality location with knowledgeable and personable staff has always been a priority. Rob - and everyone else at GPS - operates with the utmost professionalism. They are able to appropriately identify and triage issues requiring immediate repair versus issues that may require maintenance at a later date. Furthermore, they offer these services at reasonable costs (still expensive because these are German cars, but much more reasonable compared to the local dealer) and always contact you in advance to authorize repairs. This is in stark contrast to many shops which will look for small flaws or other ways to nickel and dime customers. I would recommend GPS to anyone without hesitation. read more

This shop is fantastic. I have had problems with my daughter's Mini that only seemed to worsen every time someone worked on it. Being new to the Boston area, I had no idea who to call but some research sent me to GPS. My only regret is that I didn't find them sooner. Rob worked with me to have the car towed to the shop; he communicated with me during the entire process, keeping me informed of what they were doing, and finally letting me know what was causing the problem. It was an electrical issue (among other things); they repaired it and even informed me of a recall that had been issued by Mini on a previous costly repair performed by another shop!! I can't recommend GPS highly enough!! Rob was great to deal with--he was very knowledgeable, always returned my calls promptly and went that "extra mile" to help me. This shop is truly one of the best I've ever dealt with and I would highly recommend them. Special note to women: this shop doesn't treat women with that condescending attitude that you find at many auto repair centers. I was always treated with respect and had whatever questions I asked answered in a professional and respectful manner. Great people, great service!! Thanks, Rob, for all your patience and help!! read more

I totally agree with the previous two reviews. Mark (and Keith) did a tremendous amount of work on my 1990 BMW over the past three months. Mark is a very intelligent guy and communicates in very clear terms what the problem is and what your options are--and that skill is crucial especially when the customer is not all that mechanically savvy. He will offer to save you some money by not installing the most expensive or new OE part around, if that's what you want. (Some BMW specialty shops will only install new BMW parts.) He's very good at explaining the pros and cons for your options. My engine blew a bearing and he was able to find one for $500 from a friend, and even spent some (unpaid) time helping his friend extract it from his car and transport it to the shop. $2400 for a used engine, installed, is not bad at all. Their hourly rate could be considered a little high by some, but I have learned from past experience that you don't want to crimp on a labor rate when you're dealing with a beloved classic car. Even though I live in Acton I find their shop to be accessible because it is close to the Porter Square commuter rail station (and to Alewife T station). GPS is the fourth indie shop I've tried, and I won't be going anywhere else anytime soon. read more
