They work only on German automobiles, have the same level of knowledge as a dealership 'specialist' and on average, save you 30% to 50% of what the dealership would charge. There are a few things to unpack here, but what I can say is that our relationship was brief, expensive, and didn't leave me with a sense of trust I had with my prior BMW service team. German Autowerks actually motivated me to move on to a different vehicle, because building trust with a BMW needing some repairs can be very expensive. And what I was left with after their service was likely going to require even more money beyond the vehicle's worth. Needed a power steering hose replaced (leaking), oil change, window washer pump replaced, and check engine light diagnosed. So several days in advance, I scheduled a PM drop-off the day before and took the car maintenance day off work as a PTO day. The 2pm news didn't sound encouraging. Aside from the above, they told me my water pump was making noise and needed replaced - and it was such a super priority and they didn't want to do what I asked first without addressing the risk that "my engine could suddenly overheat and catch on fire." I'm old enough to know what it's like to have a water pump go out, but I did notice a "wheen" developing in the engine over the past few months. So I accepted the diagnosis. I accepted that it needed replacing. But some other customer came in and suddenly needed a hitch installed that day, so the owner informed me on this 2pm call that their golden priority meant my repairs couldn't be completed until... Monday. They didn't have the staff. My wife had already left out of town that morning for Spokane. So I had to rent a car through Monday afternoon as she still wouldn't be back and I had kids to shuttle. Awesome. Just a bonus cost to me for someone's hitch priority. At least Enterprise has pick up service so I didn't have to Uber as well. So that noise didn't go away after "repair." I now think it's the cabin fan going. The tech didn't reset my oil service interval, so it now shows I needed an oil change 1,000 miles ago. For some reason, my car now blows full high-heat constantly to the point where I need to run the AC with triple blue dot cool to not sweat during the winter. WTF? Then a couple days after the repairs were done, my radiator hose oddly blows out. The story is that a week or so of exposure to power steering fluid drips before the repair caused a part less than 2 years old to blow out because "it was old and the increased pressure from the new water pump caused it to fail." Interesting. Having had to tow my car from NE Portland and using another vacation day, you bet I wanted my eyes on what they were doing. Look at the X mark on the hose in the photo (right after they lifted it up on the rack) and tell me what you think a realistic conclusion is. And because the radiator went low fluid and started hitting high heat before I pulled over for the tow, the check engine light lit up again. A professional would have known to reset the codes. They didn't. At least the wiper pump works. Can't justify going back with such concerning observations and low-grade professional performance. C- would be the most optimistic grade. took my volkswagen here to get a diagnosis , they told me it would be $75 over the phone but tried to charge me $150 in person . as soon as I left the mechanic , my car shut down on the busy highway . the mechanic confessed to the car sounding different after he had diagnosed it , when i went back to tell them to tow it or get it to start . the old lady at the front told me " what do you want me to do about it " . very not helpful and super rude to their customers . they ruined my car and it only had 70k miles on it . do not recommend and they will ruin your car then not take accountability for it . I took the car to them running and working , the dealership quoted me $1,800 to fix while they told me it would be $5,000 . After i told them no i am okay , i drove off and i was around 200 feet away , the car turned off and would not start at all . they blew my engine and refused to fix it . We've had quite a bit of work done on our BMW's here. It's a small family business and I've had very good experiences so far. They don't overcharge and they are really good about telling me if something really needs to be fixed or if it can wait. Our newer cars still go to the dealership because of warrantees and if I was having really complicated work done I would probably still use Kuni. Also, this shop doesn't seem very interested in any performance work so I'll probably try to find a good Indy Performance shop for a brake and exhaust upgrade in the future. If you are considering German Autowerks for auto repair do yourself a favor and GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! There are many better places within a mile of them. Like so many of the other reviews here my experience with them was expensive and unpleasant. They charge more and take longer to do the work as a standard business practice. They have been the subject of innumerable disputes for poor quality work, and often unfinished work. They have no special expertise in German Autos or any other types of Autos. The parking lot resembles a junk yard of old, un-repaired cars for a reason. Their only expertise is bilking unsuspecting people in need of auto repair. read more

I just got my vehicle out of this shitty shop! I took my BMW back in November of 2021 for a valve oil leak in which I was quoted $600 so because their expertise in BMWs I decided that it was best to to leave it there and fix it. Debbie the front person at this shop called me 2 days later and told me that the vehicle needed about 9 repairs on the car totalling $2,100 in which she promise the car would be fixed of all future leaks and services plus would leave it almost in very good working condition so I decided to believe and got it done....They took 3 1/2 weeks until I had to call them and ask if my car was ready well Debbie explained what they did to the car and that there was no more leaks and that my car would be in excellent driving condition oh and she said like no big deal "oh yeah its been ready for a week now"!! Which I thought was very unprofessional on their part. ....a couple of days later noticed in my driveway lots of oil leaks as well as the oil light on on my dashboard so I called Debbie and told her she said bring it in and we will check it... Another 3 weeks went by so again I wanted my car back called them and the car was just sitting in their lot... So I told her I needed a receipt she refused then again 2 weeks later car started again leaking and malfunctioning along with lots of oil leaks I took the car back and she then said there is nothing wrong with the car I spoke to the mechanics and they could not give me a straight answer on what was done previously to the vehicle all they said they fixed the leak and something else for "free" . Got the car out and drove it 1x within 5 day period ( I have a truck as well which i use more often than the car) and went shopping I parked at the parking lot went shopping came out and turned the car on then a "lift signal light" is on my dashboard the locks didn't work nothing worked no radio no navigation nothing at all. My passenger had to go thru my door to her passenger seat to get in cause the locks and nothing worked. So I called Debbie from the parking lot and told her she said bring it in so the mechanics can look at it. So I had to tow the car from woodburn to their aloha shop I called Debbie 2 days ago and she said that nothing works and to sell my car already that she was not gonna touch it and this mechanic issues hd nothing to do with them I requested a refund and she refused hung up on me and said come get your car. Which I did today and the car does not work at all. I beed help trying to figure out where to take it. These people a nightmare they took $2100 and got my car out of their shop in the worst possible condition you guys can think of. IF YOU GO HERE GET A LAWYER. CROOKS! I drove my 81 VW westfalia up 1000 miles to Stay with family and have the car worked on. The car drove over 1000 miles no problem. The compression was weak in two pistons so I decided since I had a little money saveto have it repaired and be more powerful with an engine rebuild. I decided to have the AC tuned up and add an external oil cooler. I spoke to TONY and he said he could do it and quoted me $2,000-$2,500 and said it would take two to three weeks and they would let me know when it was ready. I gave them $2,000 in cash and said I would pay the rest when I picked up ther car... I explained how I just got out of a WHEELCHAIR of almost three years was excited to have this car to travel again after not walking and multiple surgeries. I left car in MARCH and went back to my job in California. I didn't hear anything for a month, then it became two months after calling several times I finally got a call back and they said they had not started on it. I told them I would be in town in JUNE and would like to pick it up for the summer, I told them I would purchase a ticket and fly up to pick car up and drive it back down. This was 6 weeks away. I called three times after a month and no response. I had already purchased my plane ticket and left that on their VM. They finally got back to me and said it would be ready. I came to pick up the car after them having it for almost 5 months and to my dismay it was not even close to be finished. They made several excuses and said that I could not get the car. Instead of being sorry they were upset with me and made me feel like I was an inconvenience. I had a road trip planned in my VW bus with friends so ended up renting a car to travel back down. The car wasn't ready to be picked up until late August...I missed the entire summer of fun in my Westfalia and the car had been at their place for a half of a year. I brought it to them running with somewhat low compression in two pistons but nothing major...it still ran ... just made it slower up hills...flat was fine at speed limit....mind you it made it all the way up just fine from Los Angeles. When I got there my bill all of the sudden was over $4,500 and they had not even touched the AC. They didn't ask me to spend that much and did less than what the original repair was quoted for. They said they would keep the car until I paid it and said that is how much it usually costs and the quote was not correct and there was a misunderstanding. I asked why they didn't authorize this. I had been almost three years in a wheelchair. I was excited to feel freedom of the road in my Westfalia and I just paid it...thinking I would never go back there again. I drove the car directly to my parents house in Banks OR which is about 13 miles away....It is leaking a lot of oil... now oil temp guage not working which had always worked. The transmission was slipping and acting odd which had been replaced just 4,000 miles before and never been a problem... The lights on the dash now flickered. Turn signals don't work, and Heater isn't warm It also would not start unless I played with shifter. I called them immediately and they seemed annoyed with ME? Instead of being helpful they were upset with me. The guy who just handed them several thousand dollars to give me a leaking oil car. They said to bring car back. I did...they said they forgot to tighten up a hose and screw and it was OK now That the oil temp guage was working now and the lights on the dash was not their problem. I drove a bit more and it kept leaking brought it back and they said it was fixed. I drove the car about 400 miles and they wanted me to come back at 500 to change oil and check engine...I came back at around 400 to be safe... they changed the oil...said all was fine and working and I left... The car kept leaking, not running right etc...so I decided to take the car to Halsey Automotive...he said whoever repaired the engine didn't hook it up to the tranmission correctly and it was totally botched...The seal had broken and I had to have a transmission rebuild and all the seals corrected as it was not alligned when the motor was put in. I called Tony and he said that was not his problem. They refused to return my calls or get back to me so I had Halsey Repair it. Dash lights blinking, less power, and still wouldn't really start unless playing with automatic shifter. 1,800 miles on NEW ENGINE and it stops...Temp said fine. I towed to VW Dealership and they said the engine had blown up. Whoever put it in didn't know what they were doing."" YES less than 2,000 on engine and done. They refused to help me. Made me split towing. After 6 more months gave me back the car. I drove it home. Still leaking oil, go to start it...Wouldn't start. They refused to return my calls. Anyone know a good lawyer? These guys provided me with outstanding and fast service when no one else in town would. I had a simple problem that everyone else wouldn't even look at for at least a week. German Autowerks however, made an exception and got me in quickly. They're obviously smart enough to see a simple-fix problem and get the customer back on the road instead of making them book an appointment over a week out. Steve is very straightforward and budget understanding. And, he's a friendly, happy guy. The waiting room isn't awful, but it's also not really family friendly. However, there is a Starbucks 2 buildings down, so if you're going to take your car in and wait, take your laptop there! The most important part is that their technicians understand German automobiles and are *aaahhh-mazing*! Our car went in for an oil change, and came out "repaired" - another shop told us we needed $1000's put into it because this and that was wrong (thus the ticking). Turns out there was an issue with removing the oil filter ... so we can only assume that the last shop skipped that challenge and was going for our wallet because once the oil had a chance to move around in the engine and get cleaned out, it's not ticking anymore. NEVER TAKE YOUR CAR HERE. YOU WILL REGRET IT. Tony charged me $100 just to diagnose when I was originally told it's free (all they do is hook it up to a computer and read codes. Takes all of 2 minutes.) I went here based on a recommendation from a different mechanic. Turns out they are extremely incompetent when it comes to newer vehicles and just all around sketchy. My car died or stalled twice on the way home. Next day I took it to ARD Tuning around the corner from this place and had the issue that was diagnosed here fixed for half the price!! Almost a $700 difference. So my suggestion is if you have a German or European vehicle in general, drive right past this place and hit up ARD. Whatever you do, do not leave your vehicle with this establishment. You will 100% regret it. read more

I recently purchased a used VW Jetta. From day one, the front end made a moaning sound around corners. I was taking it to another nearby VW/Audi specialist, who could replicate the noise, but didn't know where exactly it was coming from. I decided to drop by German Autowerks. A very nice gentleman named Bill test drove the car with me. He replicated the sound and had some ideas. Later that day, he called back and informed me of a TSB issued by VW for this problem. I took it back a few days later and they drained and filled the gearbox with the updated fluid. THe noise is gone. I appreciate that Bill went the extra mile by searching through the literature; the other shop obviously did not. I will return to German Autowerks for future services when needed. read more

German Autowerks has done an outstanding job with my daughter's 1991 BMW. The car has quite a few miles on it but it is still a very nice car. German Autowerks has handled the repairs professionally and economically! The technicians diagnosed an electrical problem last year, quickly and inexpensively. The car has been running well. But yesterday the car stalled and we had the car towed to the shop. A new alternator installed would have been about $550, but Bill searched and found a used alternator from a parts place in Stockton and had the alternator shipped to the Hillsboro shop! The alternator installed will be a savings of at least $200 and even though it is a used part, the shop is doing a warranty for 6,000 miles or 6 months. This is an update to an original post that i made on 2/23/16. They tried to repair a cold start problem and could not fix the issue. After 3 failed attempts, instead of promptly returning the payment, we had to go through a credit card dispute. I won the dispute, but it took some effort. Here are some notes: 1) They have been through the credit card dispute process many times before (obviously... since they don't have the expertise to repair my German Auto). They knew exactly what to say to the credit card company and my credit card company actually ruled in their favor. I had to take it to the next level and pin them on their legally advertised warranty to hold them accountable. 2) The total process took 6 months. They fabricated excuses and reasons to delay the process as much as possible. I believe that their business model is to drag issues such as this out as much as possible until the customer gives up. For $800, it really wasn't worth my time, but i was angered and i could not let these thieves steal my money without a battle. If they were going to steal my money, I wanted to make sure they actually earn it, :) 3) Here are the actual documented excuses they claimed: Excuse #1 - the car was actually fixed; customer must provide proof that it was not fixed. I rejected this excuse because their 4th diagnosis was to have additional reprogramming needed. Excuse #2 - they claimed to have made a verbal offer to pay for reprogramming at the dealership but customer declined the offer (THIS IS ANOTHER LIE). This was closed by my offer to take the car to the dealership for the final reprogramming. Excuse #3 - they did not want to schedule the appointment with the dealership, but only offer to reimburse me. This was rejected by me. They finally made the appointment after i proposed to take it to arbitration. Excuse #4 - they made the appointment, but refused to pay upfront. they wanted me to agree that i would end the dispute if they agreed to pay upfront. I reminded them that they failed 3 times, and that if they failed again, then i will still require a full refund. They finally agreed to a full reimbursement without the reprogramming at the dealership. This was in May, a full 5 months after their failure to repair my car. After the agreement, i still had to send documented emails, deadlines, and warnings of legal action before they returned my payment in June (another full month of delays). 6 full months. They are very good at lying. They know how to lie and reel in new customers, and how to lie and work the dispute process. Don't let them waste your time. Take it somewhere else. read more

I had an appt this morning called in to see how long it would take to look at the issue, the guy on the phone said his name was Jason, but sounded like he made that name up, acted like I was inconveniencing him by calling, last week the person I talked to who sounded like him but was nicer said they wouldn't charge to see if in fact the oil filter housing was leaking I wanted to verify today before I came in that was in fact the case and the guy today is like we don't usually look at things for free, then said I will have the owner call you and just shoved me off to no where land, I told him I thought he was being rude and he said oh well. Honestly I would rather be treated professional and pay double than use these guys after this. EXTREMELY unprofessional and rude is all I can say. read more

Took my car in for a timing belt job. Got the car back later that day. The next day I got a CEL. Called them and they said to bring it in. When I did finally have time to bring the car back they let it sit for a week before even looking at the car. I called many times to check on the progress and kept being told they would call back. They never called back until I called them first. The owner of the shop tried to blame the cel on something else and tried to say it was my fault. He never even questioned the work from the mechanic. After a week they finally got around to double checking the timing and it was in fact off. Until then the owner seemed very defensive and didn't seem to really want to help solve the solution. So a job that should have only taken a day ended up taking a month since I had to reschedule my time around just to get the problem they caused fixed. I would not recommend these guys to anyone. They don't keep promises and don't care about customers. read more

The receptionist, my guess, is also the owner. The way she does business is untrustworthy. My husband and I work for a big company nearby. The first time we took our car in and asked if they give company discounts. She started to tell us no. Her husband walks in and said yes. This time around, we asked her again. She tells us "to be honest, I've worked for that same company for 14 years. You guys make a lot of money. I only give out the discounts to retirees who can't afford to pay." I can respect that. But how does she know that we're not on a one income and have a sick child to care for? If we were rich, we'd be driving a newer car than the one we took in for them to fix. Unprofessional. It almost seem like she wasn't going to honor the 10% discount they posted on their website. I just found out they replaced the brake rotor without letting us know before hand. Yeah, not coming back. By the way, it's stupid of them to not give the big company discounts. We know so many people at our company and we can't and won't recommend them. read more
