In the northwest corner of the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music, a small stone's throw to the east of the Walter Pyramid, and just to the southwest of the Carpenter Center, the Gerald R. Daniel Recital Hall has been the scene of almost daily performances, both individual and ensemble, from conservatory students, teachers, and occasional outside troupes, when classes are in session. A larger number of comfy chairs have been added to the accommodating foyer; and, contrary to the specs to the right of the venue reviews -- now that there are two :p -- there is a TV screen for late attendees to view the piece underway until the next applause cues permission to enter.
I can't think of any classical, jazz, or chorale performance that, at least of the general variety *hasn't* been performed here during any given school year. Personally, I've seen enough of these to verify that as fact; and there has not been a single occasion I could possibly give less than 5 stars to the venue; and rarely less than that to any performance. It's not that I'm incapable of being picky; it's that you're at a conservatory where the top notch instruction shows, without fail, day after day, month after month, and year after year.
The price is to the right, more often than not; and when you do need to pull out your wallet, a tenner will usually grease the cogs on the door for your entry -- except on the rare occasions of touring piano trios and string quartets, which, though 'professional' are never better than the BCCM student performances; and frankly, sometimes just a tad *less*; which is to say, the conservatory students are, for my money, deeply schooled pros often before their junior year is out; and by their senior year, just forget any outside talent, because it's right here. If you've seen any of their Recitals, all free to the public, you know exactly what I mean; and if you haven't, what *are* you doing?
But this was also supposed to be a review of the facility; and to that, I can only give full applause: the backdrops, the sound, the curtain, the occasional projector screen surprise, the seats... Oh, wait, there are one or two squeaky ones; but if you're a regular, you'll remember where they are, PDQ. read more
