I came in well after 2 o'clock and they were still busy breading FRESH chicken and dropping it in the fryer! I had lettuce, tomato and mayo. And the slice of tomato....Was a quarter inch thick.!!! Not a skimpy thin slice. The Sweet tea was excellent as well!!! And this place is clean!!!! I always look at the table legs....spotless......floor and counters are all clean! I am very impressed and will definitely be repeat customer every time I'm in this area! Their prices are amazing too! I am really glad I found this place. The chicken was good, probably a slight step above most Popeyes in California. The real home run for me was the sweet potato pies, those had me hooked and I'd come back solely for them!! Stopped in here on our way through town as we headed north to NC…read more It's a popular place at lunch, with what was obviously nothing but locals. As we were not, we definitely got a few strange looks, which I definitely expected. There's maybe 10 spots to park along the side and they've got maybe 10 tables inside in which to sit. Pretty limited menu of burgers, dogs, and frozen crinkle cut fries from the heat lamp. Overall, I'd rate the cheeseburgers and hot dogs we had as completely forgettable and below average. Definitely not worth what they're charging ($3.95 for a cheeseburger, add like 70 cents for lettuce and tomato). Hate to say it, but you can get a better burger that's less greasy from Hardee's. Worse than that is the fact that their hot dogs are cooked in oil...it's the weirdest thing ever and something I've never seen. Unfortunately, that simply made the dog the greasiest I've ever had. Not a fan. Check out the pics I posted for their menu and prices. Note that they do not do free refills on fountain sodas despite what they're charging. Their system of ordering and filling each order is literally about as inefficient as you can possibly find, which did nothing but make each customer's wait that much longer. This place is likely an institutional treasure to locals but to city folks like us that are used to modern efficiency, it was like watching paint dry and getting teeth pulled. Uggh. Top it off with service staff that was glum and displaying the omnipresent "I hate my life" attitude, and my wife and I both said to one another right away, no way we'd go back. The locals probably don't want us stopping in anyway...damn city folk that we are. I'm wondering how in the world this place is still in business? As you'd expect, no free wifi here.

Johnsonville is a small town with few dining options, especially sit-down/table service…read morerestaurants. Shady Rest has been in town for probably 25ish years at this point and is still going strong. I visited for lunch with family after a funeral service. There's a large dining area as well as two semi-private rooms you can reserve for bigger parties. You can call to order takeout. In addition to daily specials, the regular menu includes seafood items, salads, burgers, sandwiches, and sides. Liver and onions and hamburger steaks are also popular. I had a fish sandwich with sweet potato fries. The fish on the sandwich was good, although I wish I had fish in each bite of the sandwich- it was a small portion. I had to ask for tartar sauce, and the server brought it promptly. The fried squash was everyone's favorite, and six of us shared (and devoured) it. The food is simple and VERY inexpensive, and for two sandwiches/fries and appetizer, the bill was less than $25 after tax. The main reason I'm giving three stars is the tipping policies. For one, there's no line to leave a tip on credit cards. Instead, you must request cash back and tip with cash. I saw the notice on the register before receiving my check. I already had cash, as I prefer to tip in cash at restaurants- I know the servers receive it this way. When I saw the sign, I let my uncle know as he was paying for my aunt and other family members and using a credit card. I respect Shady Rest's choice of policy, but wish it was better advertised that tips are cash-only. Our large group only had two servers, and they worked super hard and deserve as much as they can possibly make via tips. This is especially true in a rural area where dollars are tight and fewer people carry cash these days. For a small-town meal, Shady Rest is simple but reliable, with options for everyone, plus the prices are low. The next time I'm in town, I'd order again and cross my fingers that fried squash is on special.
