They offer free water bottles and cute homemade Fredericksburg sugar cookies made by a local bakery. We have taken my BIL to most popular spots in Austin, however, we were looking for some new things to do. Thus, I headed to the Austin Visitors Center located on 5th Street near Congress. Let me be the first to say that the Austin Visitor Center has completed changed since I was there last. The last time I visited they were giving out maps, bluebonnet seeds and other trinkets. It is a full-on operation now...y'all! The Austin Visitor center has transformed into a one-stop shop for travel info, local recommendations, and shopping (yes...shopping!). Shopping includes clothing, hats, magnets, stuffed animals, to name just a few. Wow...I was not ready for this paparazzi of items. Other services include free maps and guides, tour booking services, free Wi Fi, restrooms, charging stations and luggage storage for a small fee. In addition, their coffee shop, 5th and Brew, is a nice respite for tourists. The space is large and spacious. The ladies in the Austin Visitor Center were super sweet and helpful! The ultra nice people invited us to take the museum tour with a free veterans access. So I paid my $5 for my wife and we took the self guided tour. We read the plaques and history of the city of Bastrop. Then we ran into the guided tour guide. As it was just us, we got a private tour of the museum. There is a lot of history in the state of Texas. Seems like each city has its own unique story. I invite you all to get out and explore this great state. Especially the downtown areas. We had no clue what to look for, what to do, so I figured to hell with it, let's go to the visitor's center and see what they suggest. We parked right by the door and when we walked in, this teeny bopper pounced on us and welcomed us in. She was very friendly and asked us where we were from, what we were doing, etc. She suggested a couple of wine tasting events, a couple of restaurants and left us to browse through their pamphlets and brochures. I suddenly had to use the restroom which left the rest of the fam to hang out with said teeny bopper. When I came back, I saw her pop in a video and tell everyone to just go ahead and turn the tv off when the video was finished. I asked, "What's this?" to which I was told, "Shut up and enjoy the video." Wow. Ok. LOL! It was the history of Bastrop. Now, I've lived in and out of Texas pretty much my whole life and had no clue - none whatsoever - that Bastrop was ALMOST the state capital. It was an interesting, yet cheesy video but it fulfilled its purpose. There was a lot of information available (and not just for Bastrop - they had info for a lot of Texas destinations).

Caves are so interesting and there is so much to learn about them . Longhorn Cavern offer 3 different tour options. The cavern walking tour is just like a casual walking tour. The black light tour is where you wear hard hats and walk with a light. The Wild Cave tour is for the extreme explorers who are okay with tight spaces . I chose the cavern walking tour. I highly recommend shoes that have a tight grip. The gift shop has really good options for keepsakes. Also, if you get thirst drinks are available to purchase. I saw a section for pizza, but it was sold out. I had amazing time during my visit. The cave is beautiful and there is so much to see.

I did a wild cave tour without the extra charges that Longhorn collects. At Longhorn, our guide, Johnson did an amazing job with our small group of six people for the 10:45 AM tour. My brother and I initially registered for the 11:00 AM tour and am glad that we were suggested another time. We passed by the 11:00 AM tour and they had 40+ people in their group. Johnson showed us cool geological formations. We saw dolomite, calcium bicarbonate, chert, limestone, geodes, stalagmites, stalactites, and quartz crystals. Johnson is somewhat funny; he had a bit of quirky and dry humor. I enjoyed the history of the caverns, but some of it I thought was interesting. It was really delightful to learn that in the 1800's, before the CCC got involved, the locals would dance and play music turning the cave into an auditorium of entertainment. Johnson said that if certain geological formations glows, it is growing. Very catchy phase for memory. I got to see a few bats hanging out. They were tricolor bats which are smallest bats. The cave is cool, but thankfully not slippery. I was wearing no grip support shoes, but I didn't fall or have the urge to fall. There are mats on the floor of the cave to prevent falls. Johnson gave us more time to look around and admire the geology. My brother and I weren't required to bring our own flashlights. Johnson had a flashlight, but forgot to grab the blacklights. What I find is strange is that this is a state park that you cannot renew your state park pass at. This park headquarters is very different than the rest considering that there's a third party company handing the cave tours, they sell ice-cees, popcorn, and the gift shop is very big and vast. The others don't have this. It is questionable to me. I was told that I needed to go to Inks Lake to renew my pass. The cave tours are very pricey. Kickapoo Caverns tour was very affordable at $10. You can use the park pass. You can't get your state park passport stamped at Longhorn Caverns either. It seems like Longhorn Caverns is more for profit and the history about the cavern could be overly exaggerated to attract customers. My opinion. It was hard to believe half of the things what Johnson was telling us. There's one portion of geological formation in the cave that is "dead" because in year 1919, the locals went exploring by touching the formation it "killed" it. I preferred Kickapoo Caverns and the Caverns of Sonora a lot more. Even Inner Space Caverns and Natural Bridge were very exciting to see. Longhorn is cool, but didn't give me that WOW-factor, but I still had a ton of fun on a Sunday morning.

During Johnson's administration, the LBJ Ranch was known as the Texas White House because the President spent approximately 20% of his time in office there. Johnson donated the ranch in his will to the public to form the park, with the provision that it "remain a working ranch." You can see his birthplace home, school house, the cemetary where he and his family are buried, the show stables, his prized Hereford cows, and even his downsized "Airforce one-Half" Across the street at the state park you can see the home and building of the Johnson's neighbors, the Sauer--Beckmanns in the living history farm area. There is also a bison herd and longhorns on the property.

You can walk through some areas or you can choose to drive. We opted to walk the farm area and drive through the rest with stops along the way. Having a travel agent isn't just a luxury. It's the smartest thing you can do for yourself and your trip. My personal experience: Skip helped us put together a FABULOUS dream vacation to Italy for our 10 year anniversary. From the first phone call to start planning to the day we got home everything went smoothly. He was always quick to respond, personal and worked with the budget we gave him. I'm a wedding and event planner so I'm a very detailed person and used to planning our small family trips but there are so many things to consider for your first international flight. Getting our passports, knowing which airports to fly in and out of, how long of a layover is enough time, how to travel between cities, setting up tours in a city where you don't speak the language, what to do when you're there. Skip sat down with us before we left to go over our itinerary and each activity along the way. Could I have planned this trip by myself? Maybe. But knowing the ins and outs of traveling is what he is an expert in and he can save you time and so much stress along the way. For example: Passports: We were going to just go to the post office to get our passport. When I told Skip our plan he stopped me and suggested a few passport services. As he pointed out, the post office is a government agency. Enough said. They can move slow. They can lose mail. Maybe it's not common but do you really want to take the chance of a single delay and you missing your trip? We took our applications to one of the recommended offices and they immediately caught an error on our form. Had we taken it to the post office, they would have never noticed the error and our application would have been returned and delayed getting our passport. Traveling: When I questioned the long layover there and back Skip advised me that I would need the time to get through customs. Boy was he right! We were never rushed but had it been up to me and I had moved the flights to what I thought were best, we would have missed our flights. Experienced travel agents know what to expect, are familiar with different airports and airlines. Have you ever booked a flight or hotel with an online discount company only to have an issue arise? You are at the mercy of someone on the other end of the line after waiting to get through to customer service and that doesn't guarantee the issue is resolved. $$$ and time wasted. Once we were in Italy, Skip had arranged for concierge services from the moment we grabbed our luggage. We had private drivers and even a private boat that took us from the airport to our hotel. No waiting in line for taxis. No fumbling for directions. We were treated like VIPs from the minute we touched down in Italy until we left. Skip arranged for private tours for the sights we most wanted to see. We avoided lines that wrapped around the block just to get in and were escorted through each area with an informative tour guide. Made the experience so much nicer and allowed us to have the rest of the day to do what we wanted. We visited three cities in total and used the train to travel between them. Skip had an agent waiting for us at the hotel each time who not only got us to the train station but also walked us through the station to our seat so we knew exactly what to do and how to travel. Then when we got off the train our driver was waiting for us to take us to the next hotel. Could you figure it out on your own? Possibly. But again, why have that added stress if you don't speak the language or understand what to do. While on one of our train rides, we watched a young girl get on only to later argue with the conductor, cry and ultimately have to move because of an issue with her ticket. Misunderstandings happen. But a travel agent knows how to guide you through all of that. Our second stop could have been a disaster when we got out of our car and went to check-in to the hotel. Only after having been there for about 5 minutes we realized we had left a bag in the car that had just dropped us off. The bag had all our electronics and most importantly, our passports. I calmly reached into the suitcase and pulled out the 2nd copy of our itinerary Skip had put together for us before we left. I called the number for the car service and within minutes they returned with our bag untouched. That small lapse in judgment could have been a nightmare had we taken a city taxi. We saw some of the most amazing pieces of history, immersed ourselves in the culture, ate some of the best foods and had such a relaxing experience the whole time. Truly it was a dream vacation and one we will never forget and we have Skip to think for that. I have no reservations in recommending him to my clients and brides and using him for every trip in the future!
