I have to admit, I've got a soft spot for places like George's on Park Avenue in Winter Park--it's got that effortless charm...The kind where the atmosphere wraps around you, the location couldn't be more ideal for a lazy morning stroll, and the food is amazing....it hits the mark without trying too hard. But, and here's where it gets a tricky, service can make or break a place, especially one with so much going for it. I've seen enough eateries come and go on Park Avenue to know that a stumble there is like forgetting the punchline in a joke--everything else falls flat. Take my visit, for instance. Rolled in around 8:25 a.m., figuring since they open at 8, the breakfast buffet would be all set up and steaming. Nope. Not quite. Everyone has those mornings...So I hung back the recommended 20 minutes, no big deal, and then dove in. Asked for a coffee first--simple enough. Loaded up on those eggs (amazingly fluffy, by the way), some well cooked bacon that snapped just right, creamy grits, fresh fruit, and yeah, I grabbed a pastry. It all tasted spot on, like they'd nailed the basics with a quiet confidence. But then... the coffee arrived, and poof, my server vanished into thin air. No pop-bys to see if I needed a top-off or, heaven forbid, a napkin. Zero. It was almost comical, in a sad sort of way, like being the last kid picked for dodgeball. I finished up, feeling oddly abandoned, and headed to cash out. Joined by another patron, we stood there at the register, watching the chef and staff buzz around like they were in a different dimension. Felt eternal, but probably just five minutes. Not the vibe you want, especially when the food's begging for a return visit. Look, perhaps it's just an off day, or maybe training could use a nudge--nothing major, but fix that, and George's could be the go-to I'd enthusiastically tell my friends. For now, though? We came for lunch on our anniversary because Brandywine's (the former cafe here) was a place we came while dating. George's Catering also did our daughter's wedding reception, which was outstanding. But today? Not so much. It was a cold day so we came for the homemade chili. I got the cup and my husband got the bowl. We shared the 1933 Salad because it sounded delicious. My cup of chili came out cold! When I sent it back it was reheated to warm--not hot. I finished my cup before my husband's bowl was served. It came with fresh bread but we had to ask for butter. The chili was mediocre at best. When the salad arrived it was piled with a good portion of meats and cheese, a lot of romaine, two olives and two small tomatoes. The dressing was great! The man working in the kitchen seemed terribly confused--not knowing a cup from a bowl. The cookies George is known for were no where to be seen, just a sign in the empty case that said, "peanut butter cookies". Ordered a black coffee @ 11:05. Kindly inquired 2 x inside and was informed they are brewing a fresh batch. Flagged down a male server @ 11:44. He advised it's still brewing. Departed restaurant @11:50 w/o coffee. Of particular note, two other tables that arrived after 11:00 AM were also waiting for coffee. After visiting the Morse Museum, I walked over to George's Cafe for lunch. The interior was very cozy and eclectic. The girl working at the front counter was very nice and helpful when ordering. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich with the house made potato chips. The sandwich was very good and a plentiful serving of chicken salad. The house made potato chips were SO GOOD. You must order those as a side! There is a soda machine to help yourself when it comes to drinks. My food only took a short amount of time to come out. After lunch, I saw cookies come out. I ordered the chocolate chip and oatmeal cookies. The oatmeal was so good with the icing on top. The chocolate chip had a ton of chocolate chips. I gave it many chances, but the experience just kept letting me down. Sometimes the food is good, sometimes it feels rushed and careless. My most recent sandwich was over-toasted, barely filled, and missing the side it was supposed to come with. Went today during the art festival. Service is poor. We walked in at lunch time and waited about 15 minutes before staff said anything to us. 3 different servers walked by us without saying anything to us. After 15 minutes, a server finally asked if we were ready to order. I asked if we could order cookies and she gave me a rude look and said "we don't have cookies". Their sign literally says "cookies and catering" and tons of cookie options on their menu. She didn't elaborate and kept staring at me smugly. I said thank you and left. While we waited the 15 minutes I overheard a server say that two tables were missing items and the table next to me was also complaining about how they forgot their grilled cheese. Food for thought. We ordered take-out and I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was even after it was transported and sat for a bit. The portions they give you are huge. I ordered a Turkey sandwich and each half has three thick chunks of turkey. And I'm not talking deli turkey. This is fresh sliced roasted turkey. It reminded me of what I'd eat for Thanksgiving. So juicy. While I enjoyed the amount of turkey and the flavor for the most part, I wasn't blown away. Half my sandwich was missing its bread which was a bit weird. It needed something more, too, like a spread or at least more than one packet of Mayo since the sandwich was so packed full. My sandwich came with two sides so I chose the fresh fruit and broccoli salad. The fruit was lovely, a good combination of so many fresh fruits, and plenty of it. One of the better mixed fruits I've had. The broccoli salad was just ok. It was a bit dry and flavorless for me. Let's talk about the cookies. Holy cow, they are so big and packed full of stuff. I ordered the white chocolate macadamia nut but instead was given the peanut butter. Kind of a disappointment since the white chocolate kind are my favorite. I'm not usually a fan of peanut butter cookies at all but let me tell you... this was the BEST peanut butter cookie I've ever had!! It wasn't just peanut butter flavored. There were chunks of peanuts and honey roasted peanuts and gooey honey and peanut buttery pieces. It was mouth watering. Definitely enough for two servings but I ate it all in one. I decided to stop by here out of whim while passing by over the weekend, the sandwiches and salad were surprisingly large, you definitely could get two meals out of each item. I was not expecting it to be counter service, and honestly if I had known it was before arriving I probably would have went somewhere else, but that is just a personal preference of mine, so no fault to them. We had the puddsey, havana, and 1933 salad, all of the items were tasty. I will note that the turkey sandwich was on the dry side, adding brown mustard was a must, I would not have enjoyed the sandwich without it. Also added on was a cup of the soup of the day (cream of chicken), and a cup of chili. The soup was originally sent out as a chili, which they quickly fixed once mentioned. Both the soup and the chili were honestly not good at all. The chili arrived cold, and not just room temp, but actually cold to the touch, and it did not taste good. The soup, while hot, tasted bland and only of carrot. The "service" that we received was decent-ish, the staff was friendly, but they tended to all speak over one another and were rather disorganized. With all that being said, I would gladly return for another sandwich, or maybe to try out some breakfast items. read more

Christmas nightmare. Ordered a simple breakfast and Tom decides in his wisdom to put my breakfast in front of another person already eating the buffet items. Client stupidly says nothin. Now Tom had a 1 in 3 chance of getting this right if his brain was in the proper gear. Table of ladies almost done. Guy eating buffet. Or me. The guy with only coffee and the guy who he saw order the breakfast. Brainiac. My server was blamed wrongly and George sadly should have stepped up to make it right. We were heading down to the Winter Park library but decided to grab lunch first. My wife had been wanting to check out George's Cafe and thus, we found ourselves there. It wasn't busy and we ordered our food. The location and interior was really nice and I liked the decorations. The food was good, and large portions. I think that's the one thing I wish I had known ahead of time was how big the portions are. As a family of 5, we spent quite a bit there So, my recommendation if you go - split a sandwich. I ordered a 1933 salad with no ham. The girl brings out the salad with ham, I told her no ham, she walked in the restaurant and came right back out with the same plate with the ham. I took it in and they brought me out a salad with "almost" no ham. All they did was pick it off not knowing if I may have an allergic reaction. Was really looking forward to this place for breakfast on Saturday. We chose it due to good reviews and its proximity to the museum just a few steps away. We walked in about 8:15am and despite the website, yelp and even the front door listing 8am, the lady behind the counter informed us they didn't open until 8:30. . No problem... We came back at 8:40, asked about the breakfast menu and she told us the only thing available was the buffet but that it wasn't set up yet. (So nothing is available??) Apparently they were working on a catering order and couldn't be bothered with customers. So I asked if they could make a latte. She said they had drip coffee and cappuccino but couldn't make a latte. (Isn't a latte pretty much a cappuccino with more milk???) Enough said, we went somewhere else. I've since heard from several locals that this is a good choice if you want something catered but a crap shoot if you're looking to sit down and enjoy a meal. read more

Very disappointed. We ordered a cold ham and cheese sandwich, a blt, a goat cheese sandwich, chili and a French dip. Took 40 minutes to get some of our food and it all came out wrong. If I could give it 0 stars I would. My salad was supposed to have pine nuts on it. They brought it with none. When I asked they said they're out of pine nuts so they put onions on it instead. It also came with no dressing and I had to ask for dressing. My daughter got the ham and cheese on rye bread. My other daughter got the blt with sour dough. The first thing we got was a plate of rye bread, provolone cheese and bacon. Not sure who that was intended for. It took twice to remind them to bring ham. It took another 5 requests and 3 plates of wrong bread to get sour dough. My husband's French dip was cold and came out 15 minutes after the rest of our food. Keep in mind on the menu it was listed as "hot sandwiches." His chili came out wrong as well. It was supposed to have cheddar and bacon on top. Instead it came out with sour cream and chives. It also came out cold. This place should go out of business. I don't know how they could serve food like this. We paid $74 for our incorrect cold meal. The food quality, service, price and atmosphere are all going to meet or exceed expectations. 4 stars - This is for a place that is good, I would drive a little out of the way to go, and the food and service is good, but maybe not amazing. Also for me, this could also be a great place that serves Pepsi products - automatic 1 star loss - bad management decision. 3 stars - This is for a place that I view as standard. Nothing special, nothing lousy, not a place you'd avoid like the plague, but a place that is not one you really look forward to either. 2 stars - This is for a place that had something go wrong or something perpetually wrong. The food and or service is likely consistently suspect here (they probably serve Pepsi too). 1 star - I can't see wasting time writing a review on a place that gets a 1 star. Wow just wow ! This was the first time we have gotten to experience George's since they moved from the Lee Road location . We loved it then and I have followed them on Instagram for a while and I need they were doing breakfast ! It was so good ! I had the eggs bacon with the most amazing cheese grits I have ever had . The portion was so big thst I took half home and had it for breakfast the next day . The ingredients are so fresh and delicious . The cheese grits come baked in a small casserole dish . You also get a choice of banana bread or a bakers basket filled with mini baked goods . My dad got the chicken and waffles and it looked so good ! It was slathered with pecans and looked amazing . I can't wait to go back again for lunch ! The staff was so friendly and the vibe in the restaurant is so welcoming and homey ! I had seen a local news piece bragging about the Philly here, so we took our family for lunch and got there around 1:00 and when we started to order, the cashier basically slowly tells us that they are out of about half the items on the menu, including the Philly. I don't know why they couldn't have just written a quick sign to put on the door letting everyone know they were out of almost everything. So my wife and I ordered a couple of sandwiches with some chips, that were okay, and we ordered a grilled cheese with chips for our girls. Our sandwiches came out, and a few minutes after the waitress asked if we were missing anything. We said the grilled cheese. So she walks back to the kitchen and asks the cook about it, and we literally hear him say "Oh sh*t!" So they quickly cooked one up and brought it out without the chips to go with it. The server tells us that they had now run out of chips too, but were quickly cooking more. Ok, so we sat for another 15 minutes and no chips ever came out, so we just left. I know that busy restaurants run out of things sometimes, but the way that this was handled made me wish that I could have rescinded my tip. read more

I have made two visits to this Winter Park mainstay, one lunch and one brunch, and both were excellent. I am a fan of solid bakeries offering quality meals and George's does just that. For lunch we had a Roasted Turkey Melt with bacon accompanied by the best potato salad if I have had since leaving NY German Delis behind me. It was both chunky and creamy and well seasoned. They have hand crafted sodas and are making some awesome chocolate chunk cookies. On Saturdays & Sundays, they are doing an early brunch buffet (8am - 11:30am) for only $17, which was even better. Benedicts, Shrimp & Grits, quiche, fresh pastries, eggs, breakfast meats, fruits and freshly made pastries, with coffee and juice included. Friendly service and a hometown vibe. Have been a huge fan of George's Cafe for a number of years. My husband and I visited the Lee Road location regularly and got over to the new Park Avenue location this past weekend. The food is still amazing and it still has the same colorful and quirky atmosphere that I love. You really can't go wrong no matter what you order. The quality and quantity of the food are second to none and the cookies are the best you will ever eat in your life! We recently George's cater a dinner for six at our home. Our guests all raved that it was one of these meals they ever had. George's staff are friendly and professional.
