Finally checked out Black Phin over the 4th of July weekend. Been on my list to visit for a while! Coffee was delicious but service was mediocre. I wasn't in a rush, but because the machine that spits out the order was apparently out of paper, the baristas never made our coffee. After watching 4 different customers that came in AFTER us got their orders, I inquired at the bar and got a pretty sad excuse about the paper. No acknowledgement that we had been waiting. read more

When I came across the name of this restaurant, I was super excited. I am a lover of Vietnamese coffee and will always look for one when I'm traveling. That being said, it is a particular method that I'm expecting... as well as a particular strength I expect to receive when I order one. Even if a phin filter is not used...convince me with the taste of the coffee. From the moment they started making my coffee, I knew it wasn't gonna be what I wanted. However, it was already too late as I was invested and had driven quite a ways and brought a friend with me. I ordered a Vietnamese coffee and when I saw the worker walk over and get my coffee out of a big beverage dispenser with a spigot, I cringed. And yes, it was just as bad as you might imagine if you are frequent drinker of traditional Vietnamese coffee. It was not strong, not sweet, and actually had some bitter notes. My friend got a churro coffee of some sort and was satisfied, but nothing to write home about. I gave the stars for the ambiance of the shop. It was different with lots of plants and flowers and was really calming and cute. But I was disappointed in the coffee overall and would not return. The name of the shop just really threw me for a loop so please don't be fooled or enticed by the name. I cannot speak to the other items on menu although we did try and order a particular pastry and it was not available. UPDATE: To address the concerns of comments left by the owner I'm well aware of authentic brewing vs. Western methods as well as the beans used. I'm also accustomed to waiting 10 minutes for my coffee at many locations because I understand the process. I do however understand that this process may not be conducive or practical to their business. My intention is not to detour business but to be real about my experience and to help others that may have similar expectations. To assume that my expectations are shaped by "western coffee expectations" seems...biased. I live close to a predominantly Asian cultural center and for other reasons that I don't feel the need to validate, I think my take is pretty solid. I believe in supporting small businesses but will not give a great review if it is not warranted...which is subjective. A somewhat hidden gem! Located next to a CrossFit in a very industrial building, I almost didn't spot the entrance. It's located inside the Harmon Collective, and you'll find plants, ceramics and trinkets for sale as well as surrounding you everywhere. There's plenty of seating and free WiFi. They have extended evening hours until 9pm and a cozy seating area inside, which is nice for those who like a third space hang out after work on a weekday. I wasn't sure what I wanted so I asked the employee what he would recommend that was iced and not too sweet. He suggested the Vietnamese Coffee with Milk, and I subbed Whole milk for Oat milk. This coffee shop has been on my list for a while, and I can see why people rave above it! An adorable rainbow walkway welcomes you to a warehouse style entrance to a cozy cafe adorned with pottery and plants. The aesthetic was absolutely perfect for a quick break or change of scenery. I was welcomed by one of the staff who asked me if it was my first time visiting and then proceeded to explain the menu and current available offerings. It was great to see this level of passionate service from a local shop. We discussed some different options and I decided on the lemon elderflower iced espresso. It was light and refreshing - definitely a delicious summer option. Drink was 10/10 and I would definitely recommend it! I also got a honey butter croissant which was crunchy, sweet and chewy - perfectly cooked. They didn't have any matcha available when I was there but there were so many other options that it wasn't a huge concern, more just a reason to return! I'd was interested to see what they did with the old Heavy location and I saw that they had turned into a coffee shop so I decided to check it out. Black Phin is a Vietnamese coffee shop. Upon walking in, I was surprised to see it still looked a lot like the old plant store. There was a good amount of seating throughout the main cafe space. The interior had the same furniture and still sold plants so that was really nice to see as someone who loved the old store. The baristas are always super sweet! I usually get the two younger guys when I go in and they're always so nice. They are happy to make any modifications to your drink. The menu is super limited so I always get the drip coffee with extra sweet and condensed milk. They don't really do flavorings for the coffee, but the sweet and condensed milk makes it super sweet and the perfect flavor. This place is definitely something you check out, especially if you love a basic quality drink! read more

This is a great cafe, with lots of space and plants and chill music. I tried the matcha latte with ube cold foam and it was delicious. The customer service was very good, they completed my order very quickly. They have a table in the back with outlets for people who need to plug in their laptops, so I was able to get some work done. My only issue was that the seating was uncomfortable. Hopefully they update or add more comfortable seating. read more

This is the coffee I didn't know I needed. They serve Vietnamese drip coffee and it was so good. I had an iced coffee ( includes condensed milk) with ube cold foam. It was the perfect combination. I ended up staying longer enjoying the relaxing setting. They shared the space with a plant vendor so the space is surrounded by beautiful greenery. There were ceramics for purchase too. I need to go back and try their breakfast food items. Since this was my first time visiting, the guy at the register gave us a quick roundup of their style and popular items. Black Phin is situated in the most amazing co-op space that's shared with a place that sells plants, so it's like you're walking into a lush garden. The man behind the counter was extremely friendly and, since I had never been there before, spent the time explaining the difference in all the types of Vietnamese coffee. He offered recommendations as well. In the end I chose an iced coffee with Ube cold foam. It was absolutely delicious! The coffee was extra strong which I loved! Not my first time drinking Black Phin but it was my first time going to the new space but not my first time in that space, as I had been here many times when it was The Heavy. Either way, it was soooooooo great! First, love that there is parking available near the building. It looks like a warehouse but when you walk in, you are transported to a cozy space full of natural light, plants and amazing merchandise. Yes, I purchased a trinket tray and wanted to buy 100 more things! There are tables throughout to sit and it looks like a place you could work remotely from. I didn't check if they had wifi but I'm assuming they did with the amount of people on laptops when we stopped in. I ordered a Iced Ca Phe with Ube Cold foam and OMG I loved it so much! It was sooooo delicious. Although I did not order food, one of the people we were with did and it looked and smelled so good that it's definitely on my to-do list for the next time I go there. Black Phin is definitely a vibe, not my vibe but a vibe. It's located in like a warehouse. Soon as you walk in there are plants and plenty of seating. It seemed very cluttered for my liking. I got an iced Vietnamese coffee with milk and ube foam on top. It was SO delicious and very strong! I was tweaking for the rest of the day after that coffee. This cute little Vietnamese coffee shop is located in the old Lombardi's Seafood building in Winter Park. It has a small parking lot and ramp access. Once inside, it showcases lush plants, ample seating area, and wooden decor that reminiscent of a cafe in some tropical country. I love the cozy atmosphere with lots of displays and their brand merchandise and pottery. The staff wasn't overly friendly, more passive, but they did their job. The drink prices are comparable to other cafes in the area. We ordered their special iced Honey Osmanthus Oolong Tea and two Vietnamese coffees. One with egg foam and the other with pandan toppings. I enjoyed my Osmanthus tea. It had the perfect balance of honey and tea. It's also rare to find Osmanthus tea on the menu! As far as the Vietnamese coffee, we're not certain it's true drip-style traditional Vietnamese. I'm assuming it is because their name is Black Phin. "Phin" is the name of the small, stainless steel Vietnamese coffee filter. Most of the new coffee shops these days tend to put a spin on the drink by using the espresso machine process and milk powder or milk product variations other than the original condensed milk. It usually has only 2 ingredients, chicory coffee in a Phin and sweetened condensed milk over ice or hot. Lately, I've been disappointed in many of the places I've ordered this drink. That being said, it was average in taste compared to other coffee shops. Next time I'll try other drinks they have to offer as a comparison. As far as pastries, they had a very small selection. I felt it is more of a place for coffee drinks and meet ups. I would definitely come back because I love supporting small local cafes and want to support Asian businesses. Really enjoyed stopping by to have a beverage pick me up while we were in the area, visiting from out of state. It's an old industrial building but they've made the inside extremely inviting. It was packed when we got there, could absolutely use more seating even though there were many tables and chairs set up. I get while people linger because it has such great vibes inside. Wow! The cookie that I got from Cat Scratch Baked Goods was the best cookie I've had in such a long time!! It was white chocolate ube and literally had the perfect taste. I also ordered the ube foam coffee and I loved the depth of the flavor. I had been wanting to come here for so long and I'm really glad I did. I have visited this building previously when it was a plant shop and I think that turning it into a coffee shop here is very fitting. The aesthetic of the place is super cool. This was such a unique space and was quite charming, in its own way. While there were not many items they had to offer, I was torn on which to try. The employee at the register was not only very friendly, but also so helpful in deciding what I wanted, giving recommendations, and explanations of different options. I tried the egg foam and it was perfectly creamy and paired so well with the stronger coffee. I want to go back for the ube! I do not remember what the cookie flavor was but it was so so delicious. The seating area was large enough that I did not feel funny sitting for a little bit, and it was easy for my friend and I to have a conversation without feeling obnoxious. We had a great first experience at Black Phin! They are located inside the old Lombardi's Seafood building (where The Heavy used to be), along with the new plant shop, Kiwi & Fern, and a crossfit gym, All Inclusive CrossFit. I've never done crossfit, but this would certainly be the place to inspire to try -- love the ambiance and the vibe! The staff were super friendly and explained the different menu options. They specialize in Vietnamese phin drip cà phê, and they also have a selection of baked goods available. I was torn between the ube foam or the pandan foam for my iced coffee, but decided to go with the ube. My husband got their signature Cà Phê Sūa Ðá which is Robusta phin drip coffee & sweetened condensed milk. We both really enjoyed our drinks and they definitely pack a punch! We were quite energetic afterwards, so I'm glad we had them early in the morning because I was ready to tackle the day. I also really love the beautiful "Stronger Together" mural they added inside by local artist, Meaghan Cunniffe. Overall, this is a great new Asian-owned biz to support and we'll definitely be back. Stopped by Black Phin between an appointment and errands. Wasn't sure what to expect, but what a delightful surprise. No hot coffees or lattes here. They serve iced Vietnamese coffee and lattes. I went for the "regular" iced coffee, which has a touch of sweetened milk, and a miso toffee cookie...both were delicious. The space is beautiful: much like sitting on an outdoor patio with plants all around. This was a retail fish market years ago, but you wouldn't know it. Service was friendly and helpful. When I first walked inside, I was amazed by the cozy decor. The outside definitely looks a bit unassuming, but don't be fooled! We tried coffees with both ube and salted foam. I recommend to order the plain black coffee and allow the foam to provide sweetness. The ube flavor really shined and I also love how salty the salt foam was-- other places would shy away from that salt level! There's ample seating with also some games to play in a corner. This is the coolest coffee shop I've visited in Winter Park! The location is conveniently located off of Orange Ave and has plenty of parking which is a rarity these days. The shop is very spacious and cute with eclectic decor and live plants. The cashier was nice enough to explain Vietnamese coffee to me which I did try and enjoyed. I also got a pistachio croissant and I wasn't impressed. I'm not sure if this was intentional but croissant seemed stale and warming it up didn't help. I just moved back to Orlando recently and was very surprised to see the Heavy become a cafe (and a CrossFit gym lol). I was not aware of the change until my friend suggested it.
