One can never have enough merriment in one's life, can one? But what does merriment mean? Apparently, here it means pairing their housemade donuts with an alcohol selection that includes wine, champagne, and mimosas. I wasn't aware of their offering when I came in here quite by accident. I had no idea that it was a big deal when Mayor Lurie cut the ribbon for its opening early last year. I guess there were long lines for their donuts in the early days, but it was considerably calmer when I was here recently for what was a relatively upscale school lunch. I ordered the $12 bowl of Classic Tomato Soup made with roasted tomatoes and topped with basil, croutons, and a splooge of sour cream (Photo 8). Naturally to go with it, I had the $14 Grilled Cheese with aged gruyere and cheddar. They were melted together between slices of grilled sourdough toast accompanied by a side of mixed greens (Photo 10). Pretty straightforward but reasonably satisfying. I said to myself I should come back some time for a donut, and I did. They were huge, so I went with the slightly more modest $4.75 Churro Cruller (Photo 9). A bit crispy for me, but it was merry enough even without the booze. FOOD - 3 stars...pretty decent all-American fare, nothing that beyond AMBIANCE - 4 stars...nice vintage Art Deco feel with tall ceilings and marble finishes SERVICE - 3.5 stars...friendly enough TOTAL - 3 stars...need to try other dishes beyond the donuts RELATED - Exploring West Portal? First time here and they have a gluten friendly donut so I had to try it! Big line right after I got in and staff is very patient as people make decisions. Parking is easy in the area and had no issues. There is not a HUGE amount of seating but seems people usually take things to go. The donut was okay! Very fluffy and cakey and not too sweet. It filled a craving. I used the restroom and it was very aesthetically pleasing and clean! The non gf ones look delicious so I'm jealous!
I was in the neighborhood with a few friends on Saturday afternoon and stopped by on a whim. It was pretty busy inside, but we managed to find a seat and the inside is so cute and chic, very new school café style. We weren't feeling super hungry but just stopped in to get some snacks so we tried the strawberry pistachio cronut which was doughy and good but a little too sweet for me as well as the donut holes which were very puffy and delicious. The hot chocolate had light fluffy marshmallows and was perfectly creamy. I loved the ambience inside although the treats are a little too sweet for my palate personally. It's a great place to stop by though if you're looking for a nice place for a date or a friend catch up in West Portal.
First time. Cool spot with a bit of a diner feel that is more modern. Friendly service. Wonderful gourmet donut options (big enough to share) along with toasts and drinks. Booth type seating and a great spot to hang out and catch up. Worth checking out.
I came here for a quick bite since I was in the area. I've heard good things about this place but mainly for their donuts. When I arrived in the afternoon, it looked like half of their selection of donuts was sold out :( I didn't end up getting any donuts since they didn't have the unique flavors left. I did order the grilled cheese sandwich though. It was pretty good for what it is, except I probably waited 20 minutes for this sandwich. I don't know what took so long because I was the only one that ordered something when I arrived, and everyone else sitting was all about to be done eating or already finished so it didn't seem like anyone else ordered any food. I do want to come back to try their donuts since that's what they're famous for, but I'm not sure if I'd want to order something again from the kitchen if it takes that long with already no wait.
First off, super cute and classy place. It's clean and bright and the pastries look extra decadent. Everyone was friendly and there wasn't a wait when I went Saturday around noon. I only ordered one item. Creme Brulee Brioche ($5.50): At first glance: crunchy shell, puffy bottom, and a delicate gold flake on top. I thought of all items, this HAS to be the one to try....... It was one of the worst donuts I've ever had. The shell layer was so thick the rest slid off after one bite. It was basically a sheet of hard sugar at that point, and it was no longer appetizing. Too bad.
Very cute date spot to grab coffee and stay a while Loved the strawberry champagne brioche Absolutely decadent and jelly filled! Street parking or paid parking lot across the street Helpful and friendly service Thank you!
I keep hearing no kings all this week. What if I told you there was a king in San Francisco. This king is located in West Portal on West Portal Avenue . It's the newly crowned by some Foodies in SF. Inside you will see paintings with crowns and you also can wear a crown and be a Queen or a King for just one day. It was long awaited arrival last year has been worth the wait for some to get the sweet Royal treatment. Hey you even get the red carpet treatment before you enter . It's called George's Donuts & Merriment and it has one of my favorite new donut in San Francisco. On a Winter last January stroll you can find a gourmet donut shop/ cafe/ breakfast / lunch spot which serves lots of King items on the menu. You can find the King fries( not to be mistaken with Burger King), King cookie, and King Tonic . They also have drinks like Red and White wine along with Rose and mimosas. I had to get the gourmet donut Strawberry - Champagne brioche. The Strawberry-Champagne was berry sweet like champagne. I then tried the white chocolate Matcha donut. It was not too sweet. It is Don Juan de la Matcha's new favorite donut. To wash it down I had the Queen Hibiscus Tea on Ice . Although the prices of this place are those with champagne taste but it's worth it. A new crown jewel when it comes to gourmet donut shops. Who says there are no kings in SF? San Francisco in 2026 is in an "upswing" with a strong start this Winter and into next season in the "Spring" and enjoy different desserts and the gourmet "donut ring" and yes its all made inside in honor of George the "King" Come also get crowned with paper crown and be a "Queen"and enjoy donuts that are the color of Don Juan Del Matcha "green" and also enjoy the "Avocado Tartine" and also add the King Salmon as "protein"
There was a line out the door on a Sunday. The line moved fast and they were out of some of the donuts at around 1pm. We had a strawberry champagne brioche, a chocolate cruller, fries with aioli sauce, and avocado tartine. We came for the donuts and they were too sweet, especially the strawberry champagne one. The chocolate cruller was good but nothing too special. Fries portion was huge and the avocado tartine was good. The space inside is small and need to wait for other customers to get up before you get a seat. Service was good and the food came out pretty fast. Everything is self-sevice (water, utensils, napkins, takeout box).
I'm surprised this place has such a low star average! We were actually headed elsewhere, but were entranced by the gourmet doughnut display and the chic interior and ate here instead. Really beautiful spot to meet up with friends. Order at the counter- plenty of brunch options, as well as all their donuts of course too Stream enjoyed their coffee and espresso drinks, which were from Four Barrel. We had their breakfast sandwich, avocado, toast, yogurt, parfait, and tomato soup. Everything was fantastic ! The breakfast sandwich came on a soft brioche bun and had a juicy filling of melted cheese, egg, and bacon and a side arugula salad. The avocado toast came on fresh rustic bread and I opted for the option to pay extra for a poached egg . It also comes with a side arugula salad so it doesn't end up being a good meal Yogurt parfait is huge comes in a huge bowl; definitely shareable, with tons of berries and sprinkled in crunchy granola. The tomato soup was hearty with a kick. We enjoyed that it had a tomato flower taste, and didn't taste creamy. Adding in more croutons would've made it perfect. Glad we came upon this cute spot in downtown West Portal !
I came to George's Donuts and Merriment with a few friends, excited to finally try their highly talked about brioche donuts. The space itself is quite small but charming, with a fancy, regal décor that definitely leans Instagram worthy. The staff are friendly and seem to know the donuts well. If you're into café aesthetics, this place checks the box. We tried a few donuts: Key Lime Pie brioche, Crème Brûlée brioche, Strawberry-Champagne brioche & the Vanilla Bean Glazed Cruller. The Key Lime Pie and Crème Brûlée brioche donuts were the standouts as the fillings were flavorful and worked well with the donut base. The Strawberry-Champagne was okay, with a sugary exterior and a jam-like filling, but didn't quite stand out. As for the Vanilla Bean Glazed Cruller, I couldn't really taste the vanilla in the glaze, it leaned more toward just fried dough than anything special. Overall, I expected the brioche donuts to be fluffier, but they were a bit heavier than anticipated. The Four Barrel coffee they serve was a nice touch and did help balance out the sweetness of the donuts. If you're into beautifully presented treats for social media, this is definitely a fun place to stop by.
5% surcharge. Parking is difficult. 5.0/5: Vanilla bean creuller $4.50. Exceptionsal. It's heavier than usual, but has great texture. 4.0: Raised Glazed classic $3.75. A little denser and moister than a typical raised donut. Not as good as the ones at Stan's in Santa Clara. 3.5: key lime pie brioche $5.50. It's OK. Not as good as the brioche donuts at Satura Cakes. It's missing the buttery-eggy-flavor.
Love this place for a quick lunch, coffee date, or just stopping by for donuts to-go! I've come here a couple times and have left delighted each visit. My first visit was with my sister and toddler. We were met with a warm welcome from the staff, and they gave us a lovely corner booth seat after a 5 min wait. The king fries were the standout, and the turkey club was also really yum. Don't sleep on the donuts, loved the classic glaze, donut holes, and chocolate cruller. I came back a couple times to pick up donut holes to-go, and another time for a coffee chat with a friend. Such a cute spot and will definitely be back!

Got the cinnamon pastry, chocolate chip, peppermint tea, and chamomile tea. Both pastries were too sweet to our liking but were good in flavor. Both teas were a good pairing to the sweetness of the pastries. Place is aesthetically pleasing, plenty of seating inside and outside. I saw one staff who seemed like a manager, constantly cleaning and attending to all customers with a great attitude. Service was kind and efficient. read more

Walked in on a Sunday at 11am and was able to find seating right away. I've been wanting to come since they opened, but heard that the lines were pretty bad. I think the hype has died down enough where there isn't too much of a wait at peak brunch hours. If you want to just walk in and grab donuts to go, it's pretty quick. The service was very friendly and attentive, we asked a good number of questions and the staff were all very helpful. You order and pay first, grab a number, and seat yourself. The food and drinks came out at a good pace. I loved the interior and I think it's a super fun place to have brunch. Donuts - the filled brioche donuts and donut holes were amazing. The dough is super light and airy, and the filled donuts had so much filling. The key lime and strawberry champagne fillings were super flavourful. Chicken panini - a really delicious savory course to balance out all the sugar. The bread was perfectly crispy and chicken was juicy. read more

Had a special birthday break for a coworker (at a previous company) and ordered some donuts from George's. The first thing I noticed was that it had this French theme in its design and it was very cool. It also smelled like a french pastry shop, which was also cool. I've been fortunate to have traveled to Paris twice. First, the donuts were sublime and were a hit at the office. We ordered a few dozen so this guy had three (hee-hee). These were gor-may donuts and I would have settled for Hostess. But we ordered the gor-may shizzle for our corworker. GD&M is probably the best donut shoppe I've tried in the City. I plan to make it out there and have more. Now for the pics. read more
I've been here a few times and just love this addition to the neighborhood! The staff is always very friendly and helpful. The restaurant itself is beautiful and clean. This particular Saturday morning, I purchased some donuts to share with friends. Their donuts look so delicious and are beautifully crafted. I love that they are continuously changing their options. The donuts were a hit and I'll definitely be back again! read more
Order: Creme brûlée donut: looks amazing. not the fluffy or pillowy texture of a brioche donut, glaze on top was thick and sticks to the teeth. did enjoy how there was lots of cream for the interior, but overwhelming. Staff provided recommendations and friendly. Plenty of seats inside and the environment is modern, bright reminding of a European cafe. read more
I don't remember why I was in West Portal so early in the morning. But I remembered that I've been wanting to try a donut from George's. And I was fortunate that there was no line when I got there. I got the crème brûlée donut, which was a brioche donut with a crispy sugar shell topped with berries. The brioche itself was a little dry, but the cream helped. The sugar shell was thick, and it reminded me of that scene in Amelie. So I enjoyed taking cracks at it. And despite all that sugar, it wasn't too sweet. A few weeks later, I found myself in West Portal again with a friend. And we decided to have lunch there. I got their heirloom tomato and mozzarella sandwich, that came with a green goddess dressing inside focaccia. It was yummy! The tomatoes were juice and the green goddess dressing gave it an earthy flavor. And I enjoyed the crunch of the focaccia, which was panini-pressed. Had I known it would come with potato chips, I wouldn't have ordered the a side of the Fries for a King. They are huge! It can definitely feed a table of four. But I love potatoes, so it was a happy mistake. I ended up saving half a sandwich with the chips and just noshed on the fries. The house made garlic aioli dip was rich, so it truly was made for royalty. I think a dash of lemon would've given it the acid to balance the richness. But overall it was good. It's so beautiful inside. The minimalist, mid-century-esque decor is totally my style. I should ask them where they got their fixtures from. I'll have to find myself in West Portal again soon to try more donuts. read more

Was in the area and decided to stop by to try their donuts as I've heard so much about them. No line and quite a few items in the case to choose from. Had to give the creme brulee brioche a try and also picked up a chocolate cruller for the hubs. When I think of creme brulee, I think of the thin sugar coating that cracks when getting to the custard. Unfortunately, the sugar coating on this was too thick. It was hard so a little difficult to bite through and then it got stuck in my teeth. The brioche was soft and light, but, to me, the filling didn't really have much flavor. Hubs said the chocolate cruller was flaky and not too doughy. He liked the chocolate and stated it was a good donut, but nothing in particular stood out. read more
Stopped by earlier today for a quick coffee and sweet treat after lunch. I was pleasantly surprised by how cute this cafe was on the inside! We were seated upon arrival and placed our order rather quickly. Unfortunately, a few of the pastry options were already sold out and we were there at around 1pm? Bummer. I ordered a coffee cake with a pumpkin latte with less sweetness and oat milk while my friend ordered a Halloween donut and pumpkin latte as well. I will say that everything here is on the MUCH sweeter side...I barely finished my coffee cake and had to take it to go. My latte had a pool of syrup lingering on the bottom of my cup. I'd say there's much room for improvement regarding the taste of their drinks and baked goods. Then again, I'm not surprised as their specialty seems to be donuts. It did take while to get our check as well. 3.5/5 stars but I'll round up to 4/5. Id come back to give George's Donuts another chance! read more
This cute little donut store is located in West Portal. It's a pretty busy area so it's hard to find parking, and the store does not have their own lot. The donuts were pretty but their flavors have a lot of room for improvement. Some were way too sweet, some had a weird texture, and some had a weird aftertaste. Some of the doughnuts were too dense and kinda on the dry side. We were expecting to have gourmet doughnuts since that's they're known for. The doughnuts came in a cute pink box with a gold sticker seal. However, the doughnuts were quite disappointing to say the least. read more

Such a cute spot!!!! I'm surprised I haven't seen this place trending yet on Instagram for San Francisco. It's definitely gives chic cafe, and I'd be curious to learn more about their nightlife since they had some beautiful bottles out. We figured this was just a donut joint. The donuts themselves are good, not great. I am also not the biggest fan of brioche so that probably Makes me a bit biased. I think our donuts put us at $40 give or take. Such a nice little treat to take to the beach read more

Very pretty inside, beautiful and creative donuts. They are a bit pricey, but would come for a special occasion. Some of the filled donuts can be quite messy to eat. My favorite classic one is the chocolate cruller, but the raised donuts and vanilla glazed donuts are fairly standard. Recommend the filled donuts, chocolate cruller, and the donut holes since they're made fresh! read more
We stopped here for a birthday treat and were greeted with kindness and sweet treats. The donuts were delicious, though they were limited in supply at the time. While stopping at the restroom we noticed they were making more (they keep making them!) and asked if we could get one. They let us know how long so we sat and they hurried to get us a cream filled donut with strawberries. It was delicious! They had some time left on the crème brûlée donuts which was a bummer since we had to leave soon and it was a long drive. They hand decorated one for me and got it out quickly so I could have one! It was delicious!!! The building is decorated elegantly and we enjoyed the experience. Recommend! read more
The height of merriment! For every $20 you spend today you get a raffle ticket to win giftcards, doughnuts, mugs, etc! Happy Doughnut Day Yelpers! Where else would you go for National Doughnut Day? George's of course! So glad they opened this so close to my house! I've always wanted my own personal Doughnut store! These are fancy doughnuts. Strawberry champagne, bacon valrohna chocolate, etc. All the doughnuts are made in house and you can get alcoholic drinks to make you even more merry! My coworkers and I often come here for coffee and doughnuts and their great salads and sandwiches if you're looking for something more healthy. We always feel welcome here, and the service is on point. King George may your doughnuts reign for many years to come! read more
I came to George's after eating lunch down the street at Elena's, and loved it! There was no line on a Sunday afternoon, and there were people inside but wasn't over crowded. The cafe inside was beautiful and very relaxing, and my bf and I ended up sitting at the bar space. We ordered a rose latte, LoFi Spritz, and a chocolate crueller donut. I had high expectations for the donut from all the reviews on social media saying there are lines for these, but I honestly just thought it was ok. I did appreciate that they were $3-5, and it was better than spending ~$15+ for a dessert at lunch! I loved the rose latte, and the LoFi spritz was very refreshing! I wouldn't wait in line to eat here or grab a donut, but if it's not crowded again and I'm in the area I would stop by again! read more
