Someone on Next Door posted a plea to help this market out because they've had a tough time. So, being a community activist and small business advocate I decided to start doing some shopping here for some basics. I had about $80 to spend which is a lot to spend in a corner store. At 10:25 AM July 31 I entered. The owner was at the register with a customer. The customer was wearing a face mask - the owner was not! I pointed to my own face mask and said "Mask, where's your mask?" He glared at me and shouted "Don't worry about it!" I left. Well, worry I do. This virus is getting worse, it's spreading! I will not support a business with such atrocious disregard for health AND the current laws about wearing face masks in places of business. NOTE: this man is handling food as well! When I drove past I saw that he'd put one on. But as far as I'm concerned it's too late. I'll never support this business which doesn't not care about public and community health. read more

It's super messy all the time (both cluttered and dusty), and doesn't have much of a selection. Add to that that the older guy behind the counter never wears a mask in the middle of the pandemic, and you gotta wonder what you might be catching from this place. read more

Small family-run business, tasty sandwiches! Will have to try their home-made hummus and baba ghanoush next time!

This small corner market is a nice family-run business. The owner is the sweetest guy who treats you like you're entering his home and he wants to make you a sandwich (which, of course, you pay for). Today I sampled his wife's home-made babaganoosh and hummus - very tasty. The babaganoosh was tangy and smooth, and not very smoky - most places go nuts with the smoke flavor, and I'm not into that. I've only had a sandwich once or twice years ago, and it was quite good. I haven't tried a falafel sandwich yet, but I intend to at some point. The prices are higher than a larger chain grocery store, but obviously a small market can't compete with the volume sales of a Safeway. I'm glad this store is here. The location is convenient for me because I'm often in the neighborhood for Feldenkrais classes across the street. read more

Loved the vibe - felt like family and community. Walked in late with the intentions of picking up a couple of bottles of wine and left with homemade hummus and a few other things ;-) Everyone was very helpful and friendly- it was refreshing. read more

In all of these years, I cannot believe I have never reviewed Chenery Market. This is a family run business. If you live nearby and they don't have your flavor of ice cream, they'll have it the next time you come in. The baba ghanouj and hummus are the best I've ever had. Mike's sons are so kind and always looking out for the neighborhood. As a sidenote, they are always giving sandwiches and coffee to the mentally disabled men who live in a home a block away. Some reviewers complain that prices are not always consistent, or a bit high, but it doesn't matter. These are salt of the earth people that are generous in all kinds of ways. read more

Everything for a delicious dinner. Homemade hummas, babaganoush, tabouli, falafel balls, pita, etc. Good service. The quality is very good too. If they don't have it, the will order it or make it for you. I always leave happier. read more

I love this place. I love a good family-run business, and will happily forgo a trip to Safeway and fork over the extra $$ to support this locally-owned shop. One of the owner's sons usually works the counter while Pops sits in the doorway and surveys the neighborhood. He always has a kind word for me, and sometimes gifts my kids a piece of fruit or candy. This little jewel of a shop is stocked to the brim with imported and micro-brewed beers and offers a respectable shelf of high-end liquors. Plus, they always have the trendy flavors of Coke and Pepsi, and a fine selection of juices for the tots. I've yet to try their hoagies, but I'm sure they're bomb. Be sure to ask about mom's house-made hummous. read more

Before anything, this store is for the neighborhood's convenience for those who live nearby. So each time I see a post regarding the higher prices, they do not understand economies of scale nor network effects when they compare the cost of a gallon of milk or a bottle of whiskey here vs. the cost of the same items at Safeway or another store with lower cost. However, this isn't about economics, this is about Chenery Market and my experiences when I shop there. The prices are higher than normal (see my explanation above and do your research), but even that, the owner seems nice, the store serves tasty sandwiches, babaganoosh, hummus, snacks, and drinks. This place is also conveniently located near a busy intersection (a short 1-block walk up the hill) near San Jose Boulevard and Randall Avenue, which is near a MUNI metro stop and a freeway entrance/exit. Overall, I'd come back here as this place is more convenient for small sized purchases in this neighborhood compared to other alternatives. read more

Right down the street from where were were staying so many visits over 9 days. Felt like I was leaving friends when we returned to Florida. Mike and his family are very warm and friendly. Killer home made hummus and stuffed grape leaves.I would go to pickup a few things and always come back witha lot more. Mike is a consumate salesman but in a nice way.He made me a turkey sandwich which must have weighed 2 pounds. Always offering "free coffee." Will miss mymy daily stops there. Nothing like this kind of neighborhood market in my neck of the woods. read more

Ugh. I gotta say, I don't like this place. The owner is extremely friendly, if by "friendly" you mean "continues to try to upsell you on his babba ganoush when all your really wanted was a gallon of milk." I personally find that really annoying. And speaking of a gallon of milk.... the prices for it are outrageous! Almost double what you'll pay at Safeway. I really wanted to like this place because it's so conveniently located, but the prices are just too high to justify going. I'll walk down to Church Produce or drive to Safeway instead. read more

Awful customer service and dirty. Be careful with how much they charge you as well. It's too bad because it's such a nice neighborhood.

Mike and his family took over this market several years ago, and since then he and his sons have been slowly turning the place around. Before it was a magnet for robberies and was poorly stocked with stale and past due date items. Now, if there's something you want, just ask and Mike and his family will do their level best to stock it for you. We visit the market weekly for in between runs to the bigger markets. In addition to stocking a little of just about everything, Mike stocks a great selection of wines and beers, and he runs a good little deli making made to order sandwiches. He also provides homemade hummus, Baba Ganoush, and other Mediterranean delicacies. It may not be a perfect market, but Mike and his family always strive to help you find what you're looking for with a friendly smile. If you're in the neighborhood, stop by, say hi and give them a try. read more

This place is down the street from me. It reminds me of little bodegas and delis in nyc. It's family owned and mike and his son and wife are usually all there. They have a good selection of bathroom essentials and ready made food and preserves. They Also have a good selection of beer and wine if you are passing by on your way to a dinner at somones place. If you live locally and would like them to stock something they will find It! They also have yummy homemade Mediterranean food. As for the price labels...this is not the first store nor the last that doesn't have price tags (ever been to macys?!) And no matter what it is definitely cheaper than Church street market down the block. Support local family owned businesses! read more

Nothing's ever labeled with a price. The cost of any item will fluctuate +/-10-20% every time you go, all based on the whim of the proprietor. Every time the store's open, the proprietor's ENTIRE family is just lurking around. It's already a very small store, and add to that the intimidation of the entire family's eyes following you as you peruse for goods is plain creepy. Also, whenever you check out, the guy will try to upsell you on his wife's hummus and babaganoosh (sp?). Maybe it's good, maybe it's not. I've only had the hummus once and it was ok, to be honest, but goddamn, do I hate being upsold when I'm ducking in for a quick 6-pack. Oh, and this happened once as well. I was extra lazy and decided to just buy a dozen eggs from them. A few days later, I noticed the expiration date on the carton was crossed out w/ ink and replace w/ a later, handwritten date. The eggs were fine, but c'mon, that's pretty shady. And that's gotta be illegal, right? I will gladly forgo the convenience of this store's location and walk an extra 3-4 blocks to Safeway or whatnot to get consistent pricing and not get surveilled while shopping. Too bad Yelp doesn't allow you to give zero stars. read more

Im torn... 3 stars because I swear the prices are rediculous, but then sometimes they're not. It's my best grocery option, finally there's one in Glen Park but Im not sold on it for some reason. I discovered his wonderful sandwiches the other day. He has a sweet deli slicer and has really fresh ingredients. Plus, he keeps the lid to his deli refrigerator/bar closed so nothing spoils. The sandwiches are reasonably priced and are a great simple deli sandwich. The rolls are always fresh and he'll tell you what he got most recent to make the best out of your sandwich. If I'm looking to pick up a sandwich to go by my house, this is where I go. They also have fresh-homemade hummus and babaganoosh that are really good too. Ask him what was made that morning. This place is great. The owner is always there and he's the nicest guy ever. He always asks if he can help you find anything, they usually have it and he knows where it is. It's a little expensive and sometimes it feels like they're following you so you don't steal anything. But they're really polite. PS. They also have blunt wraps. read more

I visit the Chenery Market almost daily, since it's right down the street. It's a family-run business, and sometimes Mike, his wife and three sons are all there. They know my kids, they know my dog. And, even better, Mike stocks the things he knows I need -- gallons of Berkeley Farms milk, cans of chicken meat for my dog. As others have commented, their hummus and babaganoosh are excellent. On weekends my husband sometimes walks down to the corner to get one of Mike's sandwiches rather than make his own. read more

Can you say Bodega? Yes well as far as a bodega goes, this place is great and that's why I give it 5 stars. Of course he up sells, at least its homemade hummus and not some pre packaged crap made in a factory. If you can't find what your looking for, just mention it, he'll have it stocked in a couple of weeks. His prices are a bit higher than the chains stores, but what do you expect for a corner store, it's about convenience. I'll pay a few extra cents for a single product rather than take the walk to Safeway, where I'll be hassled by either petitioners or homeless people, and then have to decide whether to walk thru the pigeon droppings or the chewing tobacco waste which lies right in front of the entrance. Mike and his whole family are super nice and I feel lucky to have them in the neighborhood. The Chenery Market reminds me a lot of NYC bodegas, and the friendly folks that run them. read more

Was visiting SF from New Zealand and went in to buy a bottle of red wine. My debit card purchase wouldn't go through (apparently) and so we tried again. Now I see I've been charged twice! Even though I didn't sign for the first purchase! Last time I go into a store like this without cash. read more

It's close to home and has stuff. If you happen to be drivng by (usually late at night) and have a bass system that is shaking your entire car, you'll probably want to stop here for a good 10 minutes to ponder the impressive selection of alcohol behind the counter. read more

An interesting market. I live just up the block. Every time I go in there the price is different by 20%. The guy guesses at the price and nothing is labeled with a price. Additionally you have to deal with the steely eyed stare of his wife telling you you are not welcome. Terrible place, overpriced, and bad atmosphere. Head down to Chuck's grocery on Church just a few blocks away. Chuck's is great. A lot of natural foods, everything is priced and they welcome your business. read more

Life saver! Long story short, making Christmas cookies with several kids and didn't have frosting. I know, rookie mistake. I tried to have them use other frosting like items and it was not working. Kids were getting super impatient and on Christmas Eve, I was trudged out in the rain to look for frosting. This market was suggested as it was close and I kind of laughed because it was so small and there would be ZERO CHANCE that they would have frosting. Lo and behold, several plastic jars of vanilla frosting!! For that, I thank you! read more

I live way up Red Rock Hill so I don't walk down here as often as I should. Actually not a "regular", but when I praised their stocking of my favorite, the rather obscure Caldera Brewing's "Hopportunity Knocks" beer, they went ahead and re-stocked it with TWO cases! I'd been begging Molly Stone's for over three months- these folks got it in a week. I do most of my shopping at discount stores like everyone else who drives, but I always try to keep a few good stores in business. This is a top choice for any neighbors who agree with that theory. read more
