I love this golf course and the staff! It is immaculately groomed, the grounds are beautiful, and the staff is friendly, helpful and on top of things. If possible, they let you start early and give you a choice of the front or back nine (the back is my favorite). This is the best place to play for the $$. Fantastic course that's reasonably priced! 18-hole golf courses are hard to come by in the Boston area unless you're a member of a country club. If you don't prefer to pay those ungodly annual fees and want to play a full 18, I highly recommend this course. We played on a Friday and the rate was good. I didn't know what to expect after I paid but man the course was gorgeous. I'm shocked it's a public course. It was incredibly well maintained. I felt it was a little harder than other courses I've played, but it was fun! Highly recommend trying to get a tee time. I don't know what the weekends are like, but I will definitely be headed back! read more

Golfed here the day before thanksgiving - I can't believe how well kept this course is. Extremely late into the golfing season and the greens still weren't aerated, tee boxes were magnificent, fairways were lush and free of leaves. Donald Ross' design is immaculate and the maintenance team has over-performed! I'm glad I was able to play here before moving out of the city. Keep in mind, I played at noon on a Wednesday, I can't speak for pace of play on weekends in the midst of summer. Overall, a great experience and I highly recommend stopping by for 9 or 18. read more

Sorry for those of you who are coming to this page looking for a review of the course, amenities, or cart girl. This review is strictly for the experience/ customer service I received this week. The alarm goes off Monday morning, before I could wipe the sleep from my eyes or process last night's episode of Game of Thrones, a text from my buddy rolls in... "Where are we playing this weekend... weather is going to be PERFECT". Ahhhh who needs coffee when the prospect of golf is on the horizon. So I take to the interweb. Searching all the nearby courses for the best tee time. Make a list of ten times from six different courses and shoot them to the group. After some carefully deliberation and heated arguments we come to the conclusion early Tuesday morning... George Wright... 2:30pm We'll get the perfect mix of a casual afternoon round, take advantage of the warm afternoon sun and relaxing evening sunset. The round will lead us right into Saturday night dinner and drinks. Doesn't get much better than this. I hop on to the new George Wright website - Book a Tee time - 2:30pm - BOOK. Nothing. hmmmm.... click back - click back - book a tee time - 2:30pm - BOOK. Spinning.....Spinning. Nothing. After 3 or 4 more tries with no luck I decide to setup an account and go in through the system as if I was already a registered member. I make it to the reservation screen, add my credit card information, click confirm reservation and voilà it kicks me to a white screen. BUT I receive an email. Title: (No Subject) Body: Blank Knowing I just put my credit card on the line, I immediately call the course to confirm. The gentleman on the phone asks me my name, my tee time, and number of players. Confirmed! Oh hell yea, it's on! Fast forward to Friday morning, my buddy sends a text saying he's going to New Hampshire Saturday afternoon for Mother's day and can't make it. So I call the course to change the reservation from 4 to 3 players and that's approximately when I lost my sh*t. The guy on the phone says my name is no where to be found in the system, i.e. I don't have a tee time. I very calmly said, can you look at 2:38? 2:22? maybe he put it in at a different time. "He didn't, there's nothing here under that name". Well obviously this was a simple mistake is there anyway you can write us in. Maybe push the other groups back to fit us in? "HA, no. We have an outing tomorrow, can't do that" You do understand that I called and confirmed this time with someone in your pro shop? "I don't know what to tell you, your name isn't here" Well now it's Friday Morning almost 24 hours from when we are set to tee off and we don't have a tee time. The worst part about all of this is, I heard no apology, no remorse, just a snarky I don't give a sh*t attitude. Note to the owners/operators of this course: 1. fix your website 2. train your staff to use the system 3. don't be a dick on the phone, especially when someone on your end screwed up In summary, the course is worth it if you can get out there, just don't expect anything over average customer service. read more

George Wright is a beautiful course! It's undergone a lot of improvement over the years and I could easily picture a PGA tournament coming here, given the investment of a little more time and money on the PGAs part. GW has a lot to offer: it is a municipal course, which means it is open to the public and much cheaper than a private course (naturally). The clubhouse is under a little disrepair, but it is huge and has a lot of potential. There's a bar in the back for post-par refreshing and recounting of how you just "finally figured your swing out". The holes are long and plush and can be challenging for a beginner. I speak from experience, as I played one of my first few rounds of real golf here about 5 years ago. The course was nowhere near the great condition it is today, but it was still long and hilly and exhausting. I remember just walking the last 9 holes alongside my group, I was too tired to finish! A cart would be a good idea for anyone young, old or who gets tired lugging their clubs through a long 18. The staff have been extremely warm, welcoming and friendly. It makes golfing here a pleasure. There is a bit for sale in the pro shop area, clubs and carts for rent. No driving range and I don't recall a practice green, unless I've missed it all these times. For those of you looking for a maintained, long, municipal course without the "experiences" afforded by FP, GW may be the place for you. read more

A really challenging layout with a lot of character. Greens were tough to read and running a little slow. Many of the holes had either blind drives or blind second shots. This made play excruciatingly slow. Five hour round mid week became painful quickly. I would give the course a 4 star rating on conditioning granted this is a municipal course. Watch out for grass potholes though as you could lose any dental fillings that are loose. Also, a little pricey for non-residents. read more

I love George Wright. It is a fantastic deal, especially if your a resident of Boston, and it has a wonderful layout. I have lived in Boston for 4 years and the more I play it, the more I Iike it. Greens are great, rough is super thick and quite penalizing and some shots are blind/demanding. I feel it offers a great challenge and should definitely be on your list for courses to play around Boston. read more

I played the course today with 3 friends, I had never played there before and 2 of the 4some hadn't been there is 3 or 4 years. I'm a great fan of Donald Ross courses and I think that the condition of the course and the layout was just fantastic. It's a majestic course with its fair share of elevated greens and fairways that invite good shot making and penalize "other". Our 4some had our fair share of both-it was also 94 degrees and humidity that made us all wilt. But, we all agreed that we're eager to return. It's simply beautiful and frankly, I didn't understand the complaints I read. The staff was really nice and the price was fair on a July 4th weekend. This is hands-down the best bang-for-your-buck public layout in Massachusetts. A true Donald Ross gem - blind shots, steep inclines, par 4's that almost don't make sense to go for in two... Yes, this is the toughest 6,400 yards (from the blue tees) you'll find. Don't let holes 1 and 2 fool you - the uphill Par 5 3rd hole is the beginning of a fantastical journey in which you'd better know your targets and distances if you want to score. The greens roll really well, and the tees and fairways are well taken care of for a public track. The 9th and 10th holes are perhaps the two hardest back-to-back Par 4s you'll find anywhere, both measuring 440+ on any given day. The real gem here is the 12th hole, which features a tee shot that you have to smash into a relatively narrow, downhill chute which has conveniently sprinkled fescue everywhere from the 200-275 landing area. Basically, your option here is to go 200-200 into the green or try to bomb one 300 to only have a wedge in. There's nothing quite like a hole that makes think while giving you several options. The clubhouse is... Unique. It may feel abandoned when you walk in it, but their Pro Shop is well stocked and their bar has always been a friendly place to visit. Bottom line: Public golf in Beantown doesn't get better than George Wright. read more

And a heck of a lot less expensive. + excellent overall layout with tons of character + walkable with short distances from tee to green + great value + not extremely long, but very challenging - conditions are usually good not great - 2 quirky holes (10 and 12) and 2 very pedestrian holes (1 and 18). read more

Rough fairways, like a backyard course in some cases. Not terrible for a muni but it's not exactly a cheap course. Great layout though a little short. Driver and woods are unnecessary, you could leave them in the car if that weren't such a risky proposition. Greens fees are a good deal for the location and history but the pace of play is painful at times. It's close to the city but by the time you drive through Dorchester, you could have driven to at least a dozen nearby courses that are equally affordable. It'd be nice if it was easily accessible by public transit but that's not going to change. The people I've played with when paired have been good. It's a very rough and tumble cross-section of golfers, though, and there are many out on the course that should not be. First time there, the group of kids in front of us stole balls from us right off the course. Balls that were in play. Just scooped them up when we weren't looking or couldn't see and slinked off to the next hole. Confronted, they were indignant. In any case: Lock your car. Do not leave your clubs unattended. Keep an eye on your balls. Give this place a shot if you're interested in golf course architecture and want to try a classic Donald Ross course. read more

George Wright Golf Course is the best municipal golf course in the Greater Boston area. And, some might argue that it is the best muny in Massachusetts. I believe even Golf Digest said so. (Now, I'm distinguishing between GW and other public courses like Granite Links in Quincy or Blackstone National in Sutton because those courses are not municipally owned or operated.) The highlight of the course is the condition of the greens. I have played many public, private, and resort courses, and George Wright's greens compare favorably with some of the better courses. You won't find lots of unrepaired ball marks, spike marks, or patches here. They roll truly and at a moderate pace. The greens really cannot be any faster than they are because they severely undulate on certain holes, a Ross trademark. (Play the seventh and eighth holes at Plymouth Country Club, a Ross course with very fast greens, and you'll experience the wonder of missing a putt from above the hole and having it run all the way off the front of the green.) Another highlight is the challenge. This is not a long course. However, in traditional Donald Ross fashion, short does not mean easy. There are several elevated greens with deep bunkers, and going over the green on approach can mean death (see Holes 5 and 10). You will use every club in your bag when you play here. You probably will not hit a lot of the greens, so a good short game is key to scoring well here. Also, there are only two par fives, and neither of them are reachable in two except for the longest hitters, so command of your short irons is required. I also like that the course is not a "firing range". There is usually plenty of room between holes, so errant shots aren't always aimed at your head.. Yet another positive is the overall condition of the course. Forget the traditional image of the muny with parched fairways, bumpy greens, and unkempt bunkers. Parks and Recreation does a great job keeping the course in shape with the budget that they have. One caveat is that it may be difficult to get a prime-time tee time if you are not a "member" here. You may end up playing in the afternoon rather than in the morning on a weekend. And, there's no driving range, but there is an expansive practice green adjacent to the eighteenth green. I play George Wright almost anytime I can. Carts are expensive ($20 per person last time I checked) but the course is walkable. It is hilly, but it's a nice brisk walk, and you'll really enjoy the beauty of the course more on foot. I highly recommend this course. read more

This is my favorite golf course of all time. Designed by Donald Ross the George Wright Golf Course was built in the 1930s and is known for its challenging layout and magnificent vistas. The course is characterized by narrow fairways, unconventional green layouts and some steep hills. It sits close to some swampy land and can be rather soggy in places. This is not a course where brute strength comes in handy. Rather, it's a test of patience and shot-making ability. Some holes, such as the first and ninth are relatively flat and easy. Others, such as the second, tenth, and thirteenth are characterized by tight turns, unexpected dropoffs and maddening tree locations. Even if one is doing well, there are a couple of nasty surprises at the end in the form of the sixteenth and seventeenth holes. The former starts in a valley and ends on a hill while the latter begins on a hill, drops into a valley and ends on a mesa - if the golfer can navigate around several strategically placed sand traps. Ross obviously didn't want this to be an easy course and it isn't. From start to finish the Wright is an excellent test of any golfer's tactical skills. Amenities, consisting of a small clubhouse, pro shop and limited food services, aren't elaborate, but they're better than what should be expected from a municipal facility. Parking is free and ample. There are a lot of great things about living in or near Boston. The George Wright Golf Course is one of them. It's a true urban oasis, and surprisingly affordable (even for non-residents). George Wright getting a lot of praise here, well I hate to be a downer but I thought it was just a little better than average. First off some positives, I thought the staff was great, everyone was really friendly, all good there. The course was also maintained pretty well so far so good. The layout is kind of what brings it down a notch for me. I know this is a Donald Ross course but I don't think this is one of his better designs. It is a very forgiving course, wide open fairways with very little out of bounds and for some, perhaps that's just what they want. Me, I want a little more excitement. It was just sort of bland, you could miss a lot of shots and still score decent. I may be a tough critic but I've played better courses not far from Boston, at the same price point. This is not to say you shouldn't play here because I will go back again, its good for a city course. read more

A first time at GW. A real classic. We played from the Blue Tees (6400 yds). I saw reviews that this is a short course, it is not. Some very long par 3's and some long par 4's. There is only one cut of rough and it is thick. Many elevation changes and lots of blind tee shots. This is a real challenge the first time you play here, a real challenge. The greens are in great condition. Not as Donald Ross like as some of his other layouts but the greens are small and challenging. Beware the false fronts and don't hit it over the green. Walkable but the elevation comes at you quickly with steep faces to climb. it was 90 F and we were exhausted. We should have rode but for $45 this was a real deal. The City of Boston has to be proud of this gem. This is real golf. read more

Close to 6 hours to play 18!!!! Come on crew!! A ranger will pop out once in a while, but only to help with blind shots, which doesn't address the problem of hackers out there screwing around. Absolutely no emphasis on pace of play. The course was also severely hacked up with deep divots left unrepaired, and greens really bumpy due to more green divots. The 8th green actually has a 6 to 8 inch divot right in front of the hole from some punk who was not happy with his game. I grew up playing this course, and it started to get better, but I will not be back for a long time. read more

Prices are unbeatable. Run by a cool family who are so welcoming and accommodating. Such a fun atmosphere they provide. Half the reason I play here is the cold beer and camaraderie waiting for me at the "19th hole". Love it! read more

Since becoming an MGA course this track has been greatly updated..if you havent been here in a few years due to old course conditions...I recommend a revisit.. George Wright is not just a good municipal course, it is simply one of the best golf courses in Mass. Unreal layout, extremely challenging, and as of about 6-7 years ago, very well maintained. I grew up on this course so I am slightly partial but I have literally never brought someone on that wasn't very pleasantly surprised. If you go in late June early July you literally can't find a better course for your money. In 08' the PGA said it was the 14th best public course in the United States. Get at it. read more

I am now a big fan of George Wright Golf Course. This was my first round of golf in Massachusetts in 2011. The best part of this golf course is that it is accessible via the T. I took a 39 bus to forest hills then a 50 bus right to the front of the property. The club house is really old but very cool looking, almost like and old castle. The pros and staff members are very nice and the golf shop is clean and has a nice selection of apparel and equipment. They don't have a driving range but the practice green is nice and big and right near the first hole. The course is designed by Donald Ross and it is a great layout. The greens are nice and the overall conditions are very good for a muni. This course is a must play and I recommend it for any skill level. read more

Definitely a challenging course, especially if you're not that good at golf (I'm glad I bought an extra sleeve - left a lot of balls in the woods/brush), but well-maintained. The snack cart was around regularly, and rangers were around to check on time. I played on a Monday afternoon and there was a regular stream of people on each hole, but it wasn't packed. We ended up waiting a little bit on the last 5 holes or so, which wasn't too bad. It ended up being $64 for a non-resident, 18 holes with a cart plus the sleeve of 4 balls. read more

Out of the Boson area munis, this is definitely kept in the best condition. It is also the most challenging. I saw a few reviews saying how wide open it is- pretty sure those reviews were meant to be for Franklin Park. I wouldn't say it's tight, but there is trouble on most holes if you are off with your driver... Lots of trees and a couple water hazards. Also a few holes demand straight AND long drives (9 and 10 are both about 450-yd par 4's from tips). Overall it's a tremendous value. It is kept in better condition than many courses charging a much higher price. Seems to get better every year. Just avoid peak times. Pace can be pretty slow. read more

Without a doubt the best municipal course in the Boston area. After moving to Boston a couple of years ago and being used to some really good golf courses I had become a little frustrated with the quality of the public courses in the area. I randomly played George Wright a couple of weeks ago with some friends with little expectations. However, I was extremely suprised and pleased to find a beautifully built country club and a great course design and layout. I didn't give 5 stars for George Wright being the best golf course in the state, rather 5 stars for being a municipal course, reasonably priced, with a great layout and condition. The course is challenging and requires some "target golf." It rewards good shots. The greens are in good shape. Outside of some soggy areas the fairways allowed for good divots and some spin. read more

I frequently play George Wright throughout the season and I have to say it is in fantastic shape. They have done a great job restoring this course and you can't beat the price. They had just renovated the 13th hole and it looks like it will be a beautiful hole once everything is grown in. Right now it looks great and I can't wait to see it next season. Everything on the course is from good to great shape. Anyone who has not played this course, should do so. It is a challenging course, but fair. There are a lot of holes with blind shots and there are drastic changes in elevation. You will have fun on the course and it rewards good shots. A great Donald Ross design. read more

As far as municipal golf courses go it doesnt get any better than this. I have played many Donald Ross designs (most of which are private) and this one is as good as any of them....maybe better! Residents of Boston may not realize how lucky they are to have such a hidden gem!! I understand that conditions can be somewhat a roll of the dice....but lets be honest here...you get what you pay for. Those of you who want perfect lies and white bunkers.....you can pay $125 and go play a course like Pine Hills in Plymouth for example. Right now the greens are fantastic and the fairways are a little soft...but really everywhere is with all the rain we've had recently. Anyways.....would highly recommend.....great course for beginners...but also a real challenge from the blue tees for the best of golfers. read more

The course is in great shape and is constantly being upgraded . Greens are always in very good condition for all the play they see. Several holes are blind shots that you had better know where to put the ball if you've never played the course . The grounds keeping crew did a great job of clearing out bushes , trees , and poison ivy for those stray shots . Keeps the pace of play moving since people aren't spending so much time looking for lost balls . Excellent job on the remodeling of the clubhouse and nice restaurant . Only downside is there isn't any Marshall to keep the pace of play moving when the course is busy . read more

I played this course back in the day when I played for my high school team. It felt a little long to me probably because I did not play it before and I tend to shoot higher scores my first time playing a course, but it was a fun time and would go there if it were closer to the suburbs, I think our bus ride was about 40 minutes or so. I love Donald Ross and Wayne Stiles courses they can be played by anyone the pro, amateur or the weekend player. Both of these men have had a great impact on Golf in Massachusetts, and designed a lot of the classic private and municipal courses that are well known. Some of the private courses are open to the public a couple days a week, you just have to know where to look! read more
