The two movers were incredible--professional, hardworking, careful, and so kind. I am writing this more than 14 months after my experience, as it has taken me this long to mentally unpack, process, and hopefully move past what I went through. I am genuinely still at a loss to adequately describe how negative of an experience I had dealing with this company and the woman who runs it, who I'll call C. Far in advance, I received a consultation from Gentry. I itemized every item to assist with the accuracy of this quote. I agreed upon the amount, and I was told to be ready for the movers at 9. Assumed that I was dealing with a reputable company that respects other people's time. I left my dog at daycare - this would save her the fear/confusion of having many strangers tear apart her familiar space. This was important to me. Dog Daycare would not close until more than eight hours after our start time. 3 minutes before 9, I receive a call from C. My job was indefinitely delayed, and vaguely being worked out. But, not to worry! "I never leave a customer out to dry," she stated. She was going to send some men just finishing a morning job and some other workers - unclear who they were or if they officially worked for Gentry. ETA now 11. My initial instinct was to allow a measure of grace. Things happen, and though far from ideal, I was not going to let it slow down my momentum. 11 a.m. arrives. No show, no contact of any kind. I sit and wait for this company to show up. I ring them - no answer. 90 Minutes. I drive to their business. 0 lights on, 0 vehicles in lot, doors locked. 2 Hours. I continue leaving frustrated phone messages. 0 pickups or return calls. A few minutes before 2, I received a call from an unknown number from out of state. I picked up, and a garbled voice told me "we'll be there in 10 minutes." OK, I thought. This must be a situation in which a good company will give a reasonable discount for the headache, and we can now move forward. I witnessed about 40 minutes of very productive progress by the workers. However, C's unfair treatment of her workers was clearly taking hold. The workers and their (friends unaffiliated with Gentry?) also brought along a young man. I gleaned that he was someone's child associated with the original job. He was struggling. It came to my attention that he was in the middle of a dietary fast. Gentry sent a fasting kid to help with a significant moving job, and his pace was completely on my dime. The men (and one malnourished teenager) who had just finished another job only to be thrown immediately into another were slowing down fast. Every 15 minutes of work, these men opted to lay down in their truck for 30 minutes. I do not think these men were inherently lazy. They were being taken advantage of by C just as much as we were. But, all on my dime. At 6, we had to pick up my dog as daycare closed. She was, as expected, very scared and confused to be in her home while it was emptied by strangers. My heart broke for her. At 8:30, I believed my day from hell was finally over. I was emotionally, spiritually, and physically spent. I was looking forward to sleeping, regrouping, and having a serious conversation with C about my experience and expectations for a reduced payment. Unfortunately, I would soon come to realize that the grand finale of this traumatic day was still to come. C forbid her workers leave my residence before I delivered full payment immediately - 0 questions asked or grievances considered. Told me she was driving to my home to collect. C repeatedly spoke to me in a condescending tone - "not to be fresh, but...what did you expect?" I was exhausted at this point, and yielded to her. I could continue to tweak and refine this because of the amount of frustration, anger, and regret that I feel for ever having called this company. However, I cannot in good conscience wait another month to save as many of my fellow countrymen from this avoidable suffering as possible. Whatever conscience permits a company to treat both its customers and workers in this manner is ultimately a matter between Gentry, C, and whatever god they answer to. read more

My mom has alzheimer's and they were very kind to her because she was very confused as to what was going on. I appreciate the 3 gentleman that made her feel comfortable. If I could give Gentry 10 stars I would. They moved a 4-bedroom home 3 days after the biggest snowfall since 1978 with nothing but politeness, cheerfulness, and great respect for our belongings. The extra steps they took to make sure everything was moved carefully was mind blowing. I don't think they ever touched a wall or a door or a railing in either house. And with some of the easier access points blocked by 3 feet of snow, that's saying a LOT. The team definitely knows their stuff- Mike and TJ never stopped and were so fun and nice. And Tony is the absolute best - you're so lucky to have him - a true professional who knows his business inside and out and takes respect to a new level. We used Gentry a few years ago when my mom needed to be moved to assisted living. When we needed to move ourselves, they were the only call we made. Moving is an emotional, difficult time. The move from the home we were leaving started off auspiciously as one of the first boxes moved was dropped. The mover went through the contents and said nothing was broken but when we unpacked at our new home we found an expensive Orrefors vase was indeed broken. From then on, that part of the move was completed in 3 hours when the original estimate was 6 - 7 hours. At the conclusion the drivers told us we would see them between 8 AM - 8:30 AM two days later. Move-in day at our new home we waited until 9:30 AM and then called the office and spoke with the owner who said she would follow up and find out why they were late. We did not hear back from her and they showed up at 10:30 AM and told us they had over slept. The move in went fine, they were finished in 3 1/2 hours. We believe this is due to the fact that we sold many items that were included in the initial estimate. So why a 3-star review? We were completely unpacked in 2 days and realized we were missing many kitchen items, at least one box and possibly two. We called the office first thing and spoke with Ana who was going to check with the drivers when they got back, but we never heard back. We called the next day and again spoke with Ana who was going to relay the message to Christine. It has been a week since we made these calls and we have not heard back from anyone. Word to the wise, in hindsight, we should have absolutely walked the truck before they left. As we are 100% certain the box(es) were left on the truck. Unfortunately the missing items were valuable to us and very much needed in our new home. read more

WARNING...Do not trust this company. RUN. I am currently in litigation with them because of several issues...the theme here is THIEVERY, UNPROFESSIONALISM, SEXUAL MISCONDUCT, and FRAUD. * They stole $2,000 in cash from my home when they entered and began before I arrived on site. This is grand larceny. * They charged me hundreds over what I signed for on the credit card slip for the final bill. This is fraud. * They did not finish the job so I had to hire more movers the next day. This threw off the entire closing process. * They broke several pieces of pottery and glass due to shoddy packing. * They practically chain smoked cigarettes the entire move and took breaks every 30 minutes. * They smoked weed the entire time and told me they couldn't do the job without being stoned. Then, one of them fell down a flight of blue stone steps and cracked him shin, arm, and head. * One used my bathroom without permission and stunk up the entire house, ripping a custom blind handle completely off the blind in the process and leaving pee on the floor. * Sexual Harassment. One of them said he'd like to have a "roll in the hay" with me because he'd like to be with a red head. This was a NIGHTMARE move and continues to be a NIGHTMARE now that I have to take them to court. Not ONCE did Christine call me to apologize or see what she could do to make things right. Not once. They are under investigation. I have stopped payment on my credit card until these crimes and complaints have been addressed. You have been warned. BTW...30% of the Gentry moving reviews are 1 star. Start to finish, my experience with Gentry was exemplary. I've never used pro movers and was super nervous. Christine walked me thru the process on the phone. Then Matt came over and did the estimate. On moving day it turned out i had more stuff than estimated, they were totally cool, and went to get a bigger truck. Joe and Sean and Mike were like a team of Herculeses. It was super hot out, and they soldiered thru, carrying furniture, appliances, boxes down and up narrow 100 yr old winding stairs, and into a low ceiling basement. Every time I apologized and offered them water, they were like, NO WE'RE FINE THANK YOU. I gave them some cash, I wish I had more. Just exceptional humans. And a great operation overall. Used Gentry to move recently, they are great! Called into office and Mike came out to quote and review the moving needs. We have several glass tables, large mirrors, large TV's and glass curio's they need extra care in addition to a full household of furniture. Prices are competitive, maybe a little higher than the cheap guys but their care, attitude, service and follow through is worth paying just a bit more. The move was seamless, Tony and his crew were friendly, hard working and great to work with! Gentry sent a crew to load our household furniture into a storage pod. The crew was outstanding. They were very thoughtful and recommended certain things to us. We hired Gentry to move our household in early January; we requested a full-service move as both my partner and I have significant physical limitations. The estimator never did a visual review; basically just gave us a formulaic equivalent of how much it would cost. Come move day, they had 6 folks on site, and off the bat, they were unprepared for the amount of packing we requested. We were moving both our household and a storage unit during this move. Instead of splitting up and packing both locations in parallel, they did one and then the other and decided they were not going to finish in the time allotted. No problem, things happen, so the next day, they unpack and give us a bill for $8000 for something originally quoted for $4000. So we got some things so overpacked it was ridiculous or not packed at all; it was clear at least some of the team doing the work looking for ways to extend their time. When we complained that the price was so far outside the quote, the first thing they did was accuse us of being thieves and not to charge back the CC. We just wanted to express that this felt like a bait and switch, but we got aggression in response. Frankly, if the bill had been 8K on the estimate, we would have been ok with it, it takes what it takes, and we relied on Gentry to make sure we were getting the best bang for our buck; instead, they let us flounder and then acted surprised when we were upset at a double the price. I'm sure they will come back with photos and excuses on why it was so much more, fair enough, but we relied on them to give us an accurate quote, but they didn't. It wasn't the price, it was the surprise. The second gut punch here is that unless you know to ask for more insurance, they pay 60 cents per pound. The movers broke the screen on my 65-inch curved TV; they offered 36$ but later bumped it to 100$. I understand this is their obligation, and they follow it to the letter. So, in conclusion, looking at all the responses, these folks, wittingly or unwittingly, took advantage of us. If you do not understand how this works, they will not offer alternatives, like more insurance or an onsite visit; you have to know to ask these questions. A business that does well by its customers makes sure they are informed of all the options, not fall back on the fact that their estimator phoned this in, didn't properly review it, and we paid the price for that incompetence. All I can do here is give you my experiences. I'm not going to tell you to avoid them at all costs; it looks like they have plenty of happy customers, so draw your own conclusions. read more

We've had quite a few bad mover experiences but saw a tv ad for Gentry Moving and decided to give them a shot. Right from my first contact with Pam the sales manager, I knew we made the right choice. She was cheerful and answered all our questions and concerns. Communication whether by email or phone was great. Then the movers showed up. Friendly, courteous and respectful of our furniture and personal items. Handled everything with care, wrapped everything with moving blankets and never stopped loading. It was not an easy move; a basement apartment with a turn in the staircase and a low ceiling height. To my surprise, not one nick or damage on anything. They took apart some of the furniture and reassebled it at the new place. They tested the recliners to make sure they worked before leaving. My move with Gentry was HORRIBLE. It took them almost 11 hours to move me from one apartment to another 5 miles apart. My furniture was not protected resulting in damage, scratches, tears and stains. Holes were made in walls and they couldn't even sweep up their mess. But the worst was how I was treated by the owner Christine. Over the course of three phone calls, she got more and more agitated with me, like I was wrong to expect compensation for the damage they caused. She would only give me a paltry $350 if I signed a waiver stating I would not give them a bad review on social media. Well, it looks like she is more concerned with her reputation than in setting right a terrible outcome. I will now face repair fees to a common area upwards to $1,000. I could not be more pleased with my experience with Gentry. We needed a pier wall bedroom set moved from one side of Elizabethton to the other. I used facebook messenger to ask whether they were experienced with unassembling such large, cumbersome furniture late in the evening expecting a reply some time during business hours the next day. I got an answer that evening from someone who obviously knew both their schedule and capabilities so I booked that evening. I received a text the day before confirming my appointment time as well. The three guys that showed up were about 10 minutes early and professional. They very quickly dissassembled the furniture and had it loaded into their truck. They even had the forethought to plug in the lights before setting the headboard in so it's ready to go. All in all, a wonderful experience. Highly recommend! read more

Read my update on 4/28/2022 before using Gentry Moving & Storage!! This mirror is over 80 years old and was given to my parents as a wedding present. Both my parents are gone and this mirror is precious to me. I have been waiting five years for the damage to be repaired. They did not wrap it to avoid damage, they forgot to take it off the truck and did another move and did not know it was on there until I called looking for it.
