Gentile's is the creme of the crop if you are in need of any fresh produce or rolls. They have a large variety of fresh fruits and vegetables including potatoes, turnips, melons, bananas and oranges. They also have fresh juices and breads. I especially love their delicious tea biscuits. They also sell Entenmann's cookies, cakes, donuts, brownies and eclairs. Nothing at Gentile's is really gourmet, but you shouldn't come here expecting that. The prices here are very reasonable and you don't have to buy in bulk. However, their avocados were pricey. The produce is very fresh and the staff always replenishes the items when they are running low. The parking situation was not bad when I was there even though the store was crowded. The lines went very quick! The staff was very kind and professional. One of the workers helped me find the produce I needed! At checkout the cashier was very nice! read more

Gentile's has been a Broomall staple for produce and holiday decorations for many years from their little stand that used to be located near Haverford hospital to the big building They've been in since the late 80's. Yes there is a Gentile. And yes this has been a family operated business for nearly 40 years. I believe this is the second generation owning and running. Mom and Pop for sure. I've been coming here on and off, mostly on since about 1987 and it's always been a pleasant experience. It has all the staples but then you also find things that you don't see elsewhere. The place is always clean. It can get busy with a capital B on weekends but they have plenty of parking outback and some in front. Been going here for years. Good produce, good prices. Checkout staff seems like it's mostly kids. They can be slow sometimes, but they are almost always friendly. Have to dock Gentile's half a star for the fact that they seldom open more than two or three checkout lines no matter how crowded the store is, so there's almost ALWAYS a long wait. Of course, I have to take some of the responsibility for the wait time, because I will ALWAYS go to ANY OTHER line than the one being run by that sour, short-haired woman who seems intent on turning surliness into an art form (you Gentile's regulars know EXACTLY who I mean). We use Gentile's for standard produce. You will get a good deal on the basics; bananas, celery, carrots, cucumbers, lettuce, tomatoes, potatoes, etc., but without organic options it's mostly a basics-only kind of place (i.e. the "dirty dozen / clean fifteen" produce list); we buy the clean 15 here. Pros - good deals on standard basic produce - they take credit cards - they bag your produce with care Cons - parking is AWFUL! (very often they require police assistance to direct parking lot traffic) - EXTREMELY crowded at almost all times of day - long lines, which don't move particularly fast - nothing gourmet or exotic for the foodies out there - few if any organic options - employees aren't particularly knowledgeable about produce It is frustrating to call asking for certain items, and have the Gentile's employee have absolutely no clue what you are talking about. To me, I'd think if you work in produce you might at least familiarize yourself with the market. Sadly, this is the kind of box store attitude they have there, which is a con for us. The checkers are nice, sometimes very slow, but decent enough. The staff of the floor always has an attitude. If you want the "farmer's market" ambiance, you are better off headed to Wolff's in Media (or way out to Linvilla Orchards). Those places go all out for fall with oodles of varieties of apples, pumpkins, gourds, etc. Both places also offer extensive gardening / nursery items in the spring and fall as well. While I understand Gentile's fills its own well-needed niche, it is not the kind of destination experience you get at the other places. Also, at the others, you will talk to people who not only have heard of what you want, but know quite a bit about it as well. read more

I really love their produces, however, an old lady that work's there are not friendly. There was a time I asked about buying a case of a produce. She told me no, we do not sell it by case. We only sell by big hug case which cost thousands of dollars. I was surprise she said that. I have purchased cases there like tomatoes and broccoli. So I thought they might sell this product by case too. Really, I was just asking a case of a product. She don't have to say things like this like I have no money to buy it. No matter I have a money or not, (even though I do own a business) sometimes a case of a bit cheaper. Nobody would not want to buy a case if their family is big, while it saves too. One of my favorite places to grab fresh produce. Their produce is not only fresh but also very reasonable compared to other grocery stores and produce markets. I love that you can literally pick out your own produce and don't have to worry about not finding out that it isn't good until you get home. Even the Brussels sprouts are in a large bin and you can pick every single Brussels sprout you want. They also take cash and card, which I know some produce places only take cash. The staff are pretty helpful and I always ask about different fruits and vegetables and finding out if they are in season or not. Fruit and vegetables calm me...unlike Robin Quivers. So whenever I get a chance I go to farmers markets, fruit markets, and roadside stands looking, smelling, feeling and tasting a wide assortment of fresh produce...I do. Recently during an all night blood orange binge someone told me about Gentile's Fruit Market. There I was on my forty third blood orange when a really pale guy dressed in all black asked me if he could suck my blood. I said sure...so he took an orange and sat down. He was deliberate in his movements... definitely deep in withdraw...nothing worse than a man in the midst of blood orange withdraw. He bit into my offering and then immediately spit it on the ground. "Die you bloodless freak" I screamed as I pounced on top of him and savagely beat him with an over ripened Ugli fruit. A few hours later he woke up sticky from the juice and properly humbled. A good old fashioned fruit beating will do that to you...trust me. He apologized for his behavior and told me that it was the inferior fruit that made him act with such foolishness. As I was about to beat him again with a pillowcase full of pomegranates he told me about his shopping at Gentile's. I held off for a minute, the pillowcase firmly in my hand. He looked scared. He had every right to be. He promised me I could find great food at an even better price. Suddenly he was gone...well...actually the glue I sniffed kicked in and I may have fell backwards into a stupor...either way I was going to find this place. Two days later I was in Gentile's. The place is small, but loaded with great quality produce at exceptional prices. For example I bought a pound of sun dried tomatoes for 2.99. They were flavorful and would have cost 5x that much at a grocery store. The fruit and vegetables they do have are high quality. They also have a small selection of local bakery goods, milk products, and other foods. My ONLY complaint is that it is small and there could be more of a selection. The few times I have been back, and I am an avid customer now, the selection is mostly the same. The prices are amazing and the quality is great...just some more selection would be perfect. If you are within 25 miles of the place it is worth the drive. read more

You simply cannot beat Gentile's.It is a family run business that definitely ranks top in both quality of products and service. They always have the freshest produce available and their prices cannot be beat anywhere in Delco. Their dairy and eggs come from Kreider Farms in Lancaster County, and I just love the Iced Tea and Mocha Milk they produce! I worked here for a short while when I was 15-16. I can say from first hand experience that the owners are wonderful people. They don't just put on a good face for the customers, then treat their employees badly. They treat the employees with the same amount of respect that they show their customers, which I find to be admirable as well as a rarity in the work force these days. Easy location right off of Rt. 252 in Newtown Square. The parking lot is oddly shaped, but it is easy to find a spot. Just know that it gets packed in there during holiday season, Saturdays and Sundays after religious services! All in all, you should stop here for all of your fresh produce needs. The prices are the real driver for me. You can buy one bell pepper or 10, thing here is that you have the choice. Lots of herbs, cantaloupes, lettuces, bok choy, milk, even some specialty items on the one wall like local honey. All items are very fresh and ready for consumption. It is also better than produce junction because you don't have to buy a sack of apples to get a good deal. Hands down the best produce market around the West Chester/Newtown Square/Media area. Its indoors, open year round, better prices than local supermarkets, and generally very high-quality produce. Even has fresh Amoroso rolls and other goodies to round out your shopping. Hell, 2 weeks ago they had $.49?! containers of blackberries which I bought 10 of and wound up throwing in several dishes. For a produce market, it really isn't lacking anything unless you are trying to cook an ethnic food (e.g., Indian, Vietnamese, Mexican) that requires a somewhat unusual ingredient. Perfectly understandable. Even then, they might have as they do carry some Asian/Latin vegetables/fruits although it isn't a wide selection. Service is also great including the people working on the registers who are pretty fast. Even the long lines on a Sat/Sun morning move along at a fast clip with no more than 5 minutes in line. The only thing is that this place gets incredibly crowded on a Sat./Sun. after 9:30-10 AM and stays that way until the early afternoon. Means lots of cranky older people including one old lady who plays bumper cars with your cart with her electronic wheelchair. The selection of produce by mid-afternoon can get a bit lean too as they often either run low on certain items or even run out including the mixed greens. So if you want to go, get there early and if you have kids bribe them with something good to keep them content. read more

Good fresh fruits and veggies Friday through Sunday. I went there on a Wednesday and most of the stuff is gone and/or wilting. I never shop at Acme (across the street) for produce anymore since at Acme it always cost 3x for the same item. Gentile's offer seasonal plants at very reasonable prices. You can also get bread, milk, eggs here. If you are familiar with Produce Junction it's similar atomsphere but you do not have to buy EVERYTHING in bulk. I had my first foray to Gentile's today and was really impressed. The bounty of fruits and vegetables were fresher than pretty much any mainstream grocery store I've been too. The main draw here is also the price!! I purchased the following items and spent just under $20: (5) red peppers, (4) oven fresh rolls, (2) portabella mushroom caps, 1 1/2 lbs broccoli, (1) cucumber, (1) green onion bunch, (1) package of grape tomatoes, (1) LARGE bunch of basil and a gallon of milk. Under $20!!! The only issue was the checkout line, I thought I was going at an off time, 10:30am but was in line for about 5-8 minutes. Also, parking is limited but neither of these facts are enough to keep me from coming back again. read more

You definitely can get the same cheaper in the city, but here in the burbs it is a great alternative to the produce at "crappy" Acme or other supermarkets. You can get same or similar quality at Whole Foods or the Farmer's Market in Wayne, but will pay 3-4 times as much as you will at Gentile's. If you spend fifteen bucks, you're probably bringing home a huge haul of fruits and veggies. They also have staple items such as honey, eggs and milk for cheap. I haven't been to Gentiles since I was a kid, but stopped by on a whim recently! All I can say is wow! I picked up spinach, green onion, asparagus, mango, kiwi, avocados, local pesto, whole wheat couscous, and a loaf of bread and spent $25! I would have paid twice that at any major super market! Quality is great too - my fruit is still not quite ripe, but better than getting past due fruit that just rots! I will be back next week and for weeks to come! read more
