One time I even came to buy Thanksgiving meals for 21 families as part of a fundraiser through work and cleared out their inventory of some items so one of the managers (Adam) ordered more for me so when I came back to finish my shopping they'd be there. Some times of day there are long lines with only a couple registers open and occasionally the cashier swipes the items too quickly that they may miss a discounted sticker on items that may be expiring soon...so I pay more attention now to make sure things ring up correctly. Sometimes I find items I'm looking for out of place because another customer has obviously just left it in the wrong aisle when they changed their mind...but these kind of things can happen anywhere. Overall I'm really happy with the selection and prices here. I'm now in a rhythm of checking the ads for the following week (placed near the exit) when I walk in and check the current week's ads too in case something goes on sale the following week and I just need to wait a day or two to buy it. Definitely a neighborhood store to help the community with some healthy food options potentially. I stuck out that the employee was wondering what I was doing at this venue until I said TooGoodToGo. Almost docked a star but the man was nice enough to take his time to pack me some goodies and then pointed me to the free table of things as well. A man on the side of the street was trying to say hi to me but I thought he was going to ask me for money. So I didn't reply. I knew that I was in a respectable neighborhood (Cobbs Creek) but I also know that I don't live here, I stick out, and it is Philadelphia proper. It felt awkward to look around inside the small store even though there were 10 min left. Everything seemed ready for closing up. I would've gotten there sooner but personal things came up. Once in a while I would get something that was not as fresh, but it was very rare. Philly Foodworks is unique among csa-type distributors because they have a full online grocery store you can shop from, whether you're getting a produce box or not. I was able to get almost all of my groceries each week from Philly Foodworks with their numerous options. If you shop around, you can find really affordable items as well. Subscriptions for eggs, dairy, and meat offer further discounts. In general, I ended up spending as much, or a tad less, than I would for the same items from an actual grocery store. I only ever shopped online, but I believe they also have a store front you can go to if that option is better for you. They deliver right to your doorstep for a small fee and the actual process of getting groceries/subscriptions was always a breeze. The quality of the food cannot be overstated. Once you go direct from the farm, it's hard to go back to the tasteless big-box grocery store produce. The eggs and milk were also amazing, as was the beef. Last but not least, they're a great organization with increasing access, sustainability, and regenerative farming practices at the root of everything they do.

They make the baked goods and its obvious all the veggies are not from their garden, but that's fine. At first it was great, all was super fresh, then a few weeks in I started getting home with stuff finding it not to be that fresh. The cucumbers were older, not firm and ripe, etc.. If I wanted to walk back in the heat and exchange it I could have but it wasn't worth it. It appeared to me that they were left over from the last week but that is mere speculation. I should have looked closer. There isn't a selection of organic things, they don't mention it so I assume they are not organic. Even if they said pesticide free it would be a great help, because I know it costs money to be certified organic. Because of that I will only be purchasing things with a thick rind, like melons and such. The baked goods are yummy for what they are but really white bread type things. I tried the whole wheat and it was "wonderbread" type whole wheat. Not fond of the swiss cheese, or the chocolate chip cookies. The sticky buns tasted good... but better buns are found elsewhere. The prices are not cheaper than the super market either, or even other farmer's markets, which was surprising. I found a better quality of produce at the South Street Supermarket the last week I attended this farmers market. So yes, its nice to have it there. But I will go to a store that has an organic option and breads with higher fiber counts. Other stores, farmer's markets and Reading Terminal are better bets for that. That said, if you live near the park, don't want to go far, and don't care about eating organic veggies you will love it. It's about location, location, location. The products are very much like that offered in a non-organic supermarket.
