Where does one start? Let me first say that on several occasions myself and my boys have landed here on a weekend of motorcycle riding and have always found the bartender Alicia very pleasant and a good reason to take a break and hydrate. She's always been fun and upbeat and even a bit eclectic if you will. (And I will) This bar is quaint and has not much to offer other than the obvious refreshments and a feel as though you are walking into a "devil may care" or blithe type.of spaghetti Western. All the corny memorabilia you'd see in an old wooden sidewalk town bar with about the same level of cleanliness. The ($6.99) lock on the bathroom door is broken so you have to brace your foot against it whilst attempting to utilize the facilities. Not really something you'd expect to see, especially when you see what they charge for drinks. But hey, it's a destination and I was destined to have fun. This snowy winter night I was invited out to see a Reno band perform. I assumed the turnout would be small since the weather was less than cooperative and this bar is not quite on the beaten path. To my surprise the bar was standing room only and it would take some 10 minutes to make it the 30 or 40 yards from front to back to utilize the broken bathroom. When I ordered my beer from the "cocktail matress" {sic} who's name I don't know I asked her if this was a regular crowd and she stated " I only know 3 people here tonight, the band brought the (125-ish) others. the band (American Flats) was very good and definitely kept the place alive and the girls pouring drinks. Towards the end of the evening the band was loading up and I overheard (a man who later called himself the owner) telling one of the band members (in loud and demanding voice ) that he wasn't going to pay them and that "this place is a bucket list for you to play, you should thank me." It then got rather heated between the two. Now I'm not sure what the issue was, I came to see the band and according to the bartender the other 120+ people did as well. So in my limited bar owner experience it sounds like there was a nice "quid pro quo" situation at play and for certain the bar was getting paid so from where I was standing the band should too. (But what do I know?) Just then a guy walked up to one of the guys and said "welcome to our world, we deal with this every time we play here." (Implying that this happens often) I then headed outside to finish my beer just in time to hear the cocktail waitress, standing arms folded, one 1982 leg warmer clad leg in front of the other, head cocked with a slight rear lean (as if she was looking for a fight) telling the people outside at a picnic table "it's illeagle to play music out here on your phone, TURN IT OFF! " Now I'm not an attorney so I'm not going to even guess what law would be in Jeopardy here, but based on the criminal prices for a beer and the violation of fire code with the bodies they packed in this place I would have never guessed this bar to be crawling with "legal eagles" but hey what do I know. As I turned to go back inside I observed the owner and 4 or 5 patrons coming out with the owner yelling "fuck you, call the police I own this place." The patrons stated "pay the band" and this squabble continued until the Douglas county sheriff's office arrived 2 deputies deep. I assumed they were there for the heinous crime of the Steve Miller Band being played from a cell phone. But I'll never know. They talked to the owner for a bit then came outside. Here's where I'd like to split my review in half. I'd certainly give the deputies 5 stars and a half star to the bar. They were pleasant and cordial, even making conversation about cigars and some other pleasantries with some of the patrons outside. Side note- It should be said that I did here music coming from someones phone and not one arrest made so either she was mistaken or this 1984 Kevin Bacon "footloose" reference may have been just a bit off mark. Perhaps her "bitchin" yet skullduggerous leg warmers we're just a tad too tight. Anyhow it just got worse from there so we left, vowing not to return again during this administration. Look, bottom line is, I have no idea who was right and who was wrong, but I will say this, whatever your squabble with the band maybe, take it off stage next time my friend.we we're all asked to be there and we all gave of our hard earned monies this evening. Well all of us but you that is. When you refused to pay your debt you called the police to side with your "I'm the owner" bully-esq platform. Not cool. In closing I will say this, it certainly makes for a shit night when all you have to say as you walk away is "the cops were the nicest employees we met tonight." Douglas county S.O. 5 stars. What an amazing place! On the way home from Gardnerville my colleague mentioned that Nevada's first thirst parlor was in Genoa. So naturally, we had to make a stop to see what it was all about! This is such a cool little place with so much history literally everywhere you look! The authentic atmosphere is so inviting and you feel immediately like you are stepping back in time. The old wooden floors and the diamond dust mirror were incredible to see! It was awesome to read about the history of the bar and all the famous people who have visited. In the back there are bricks that people have carved their names or messages into that are fun to look over! Overall, this is just a cool place and I would love to go back again, order a cool beer, sit out on the patio and enjoy the atmosphere! read more

I'm not going to go on and on about this Thirst Parlor, Bar. Almost everyone in their 4 & 5 star reviews have hit the nail on the head. But I will say: I was glad to hear a ton of great music from the Jukebox (Blues, Rock, etc) and the bartendress was kind enough to lend us her heavy duty flash light to check out some of the stuff too high up the wall to see with the naked eye. This is defiantly a tourist trap but clearly the locals love the place as well. I'm fairly sure an entire college history class could be taught from the memorabilia on the walls of this place. I came here in august 2019 to check out the town of Genoa. The saloon is pretty cool and it's the oldest in Nevada. Def not a dive bar but more historical and catered to cowboys. Def worth a trip for everyone to see. Oh yes the town of Genoa is also very Stunning read more

I just love the whole of Genoa and this bar is no exception. We visited it yesterday, which was Tuesday, at about 4 pm. The place already had quite a bit of people in it but by 6 pm, there was a crowd, which I think its a great sign, considering it was Tuesday night. Had a nice chat with a bartender, who was very nice, couple of local beers ( from Carlson city ) and went to sit on the front porch - great pastime. Definitely will be back. read more

I went yesterday and bought 2 burgers from the food truck and 4 beers. Went to get another 3 beers, waited in line 20 minutes and decided I was done with the line after spending 10 minutes without it moving at all. The bartender was messing around with a customer trying to get a t-shirt and then going to someplace in the back to get blended drinks while leaving a bar of 15 people and another 15 people in line hanging. I went across the street to buy a beer instead and they didn't have singles so I bought a 9 pack. When I came back I was immediately confronted by a guy claiming to be the owner and telling me to enjoy the free concert. He said I couldn't bring outside beer in and I told him I'd be happy to buy more beers from him if the bartenders weren't dikking around and leaving customers waiting for so long. He was a real jerk and just said bye. I've been coming to this place for 5 years and never had a bad experience until yesterday when I found out what kind of person the " owner " is. How about alternatively he pitches in and start slinging drinks to help out or better yet he could have asked me what he could get me. I'm giving three stars because of past positive experience and yesterday's negative experience. The band unfortunately missed out on tips from us because we left suddenly. The Genoa Bar is an amazing landmark nestled at the foot of the mountains of the Toiyabe National Forest, directly east of Lake Tahoe and below Genoa Peak. The Old West memorabilia (which looks authentic, is all over the place, the Bar itself if very old and worn but in great structural shape. I couldn't stop looking at all the interesting decor. The place was lively and welcoming. I had an opportunity to chat with the owner (Willie Webb). Willie was as cordial and personable as Bar owners come. He made me feel welcome. Because of the time of year (late March), the place seemed to be filled with the warmth of the locals. I'm pretty much from Texas, I felt right at home here, easily. This is a place I'd love to frequent and would definitely recommend to anyone visiting the area. 5+ Stars for the Genoa Bar! read more

I have no idea why anyone would want to drink here. Usually I would give a place like this one star, but it gets a second star because it does have the advantage that if you are a smoker, you can save on cigarettes by merely drawing breath in this bar. Your clothes will reek of smoke even if you just duck in momentarily for a view of the women's lingerie hanging from the rafters. You've seen women's brassieres, right? Good. Then you can skip that part. If you are dressed like a normal adult (i.e., wearing normal clothes and not a leather biker jacket complete with matching assless chaps) and you want a drink in Genoa without risking lung cancer or a very expensive dry-cleaning bill, go to the bar across the street at La Ferme instead. Or you can have a beer at "Genoa's Newest Bar", on Main Street almost directly across the street. Or go to the Country Store on the corner just across the street north of the Genoa Bar and buy a little something to share in the park. read more

This place is the site of the first time I ever got drunk in a real bar (when I was 18), The first place I ever played video poker (when i was 16), and THE center of rad activity during the world famous Genoa Candy Dance. My wife and I got married in Genoa, and the unofficial "after, after-party" was here. All of the people I love the most were drunk well beyond the point of reasonable. It was the happiest moment of my life, thus far. And it happened here, under the watchful gaze of Raquel Welch's bra, and a sympathetic bartender that called me "honey" all night. Genoa Bar would've easily gotten four stars out of me based on the simple fact that it's a dive bar - and oh lordy do I LOVE me some dive bar. But Genoa Bar stands out as a dive bar. As soon as you walk in, you know there's something different and a little special here. Maybe it's that the place has been around for so long, and all the dirt and dust and history it's accrued through the years give this manky little joint the prestige reserved for historic monuments. Maybe it's the cross section of bikers, tourists, locals, and hippies from Tahoe that makes you take a step back and grin when you walk in. Maybe it's the old arcade games used as tables, or Raquel Welch's bra hanging on that deer's antlers. Aside from whatever gives it that special "magic", GB has a great selection of brews / liquor and (as stated by many before me) the jukebox has a killer selection of music. If you are anywhere even marginally near Genoa, it's worth stopping by. Even if it's only to rub up against a wall and get some of that Genoa Bar magic (okay, dirt) on your shirt. read more

Horrible experience! If I could give it zero stars, I would. Visiting from Canada with my best friend staying at Wally's Hot Springs. Decided to go to the "Genoa Bar" our last night there. While having a cocktail and exchanging jokes with the bartender, we noticed a couple at the bar begin to argue very loudly about "bills" they had to pay, later to find out it was the owners. Suddenly, the man began yelling that he was the "fucking" owner at the top of his lungs and screaming at the bartender and proceeded to slam bar stools into the bar to the point she left hysterically crying. It was the most pathetic treatment of an employee I have ever witnessed. So unprofessional and trashy. We've heard so many great things about this historical place, being the "oldest bar in Nevada". Needless to say, we couldn't cash our bar tab out fast enough to get out of there. Won't be back. Farewell, Genoa! read more

The Genoa Bar is one of the greatest places on Earth! Jukebox: Awesome music, limited genre of music, which is great because you don't want to be sitting, having a drink and have some out of place music come on. Plus $5 lasts forever. Pool table: I totally get to show off my skills... or AKA: embarrass myself as I slop shots in left and right. (I wish it wasn't $1 for each game though) Bartenders: The one who worked this last weekend was pretty hot and really nice! Slot machines: They have about 6 machines, all seemed kind of fun, but I mostly played the poker ones. Drinks: Some were light and some were heavy handed. I wish they were all heavy - average prices. Outdoors: Killer patio out front with lots of picnic bench seating. The weather was so killer that we sat outside quite a bit. The Genoa Bar is Nevada's oldest bar, which is pretty cool. Some very famous people have drank at this place. On a whim, I drove over the mountain from Tahoe to the 'dry' side just to explore. When I found this joint I almost didn't go back (my girlfriend was very persuasive in making me leave). A great old west feeling bar featuring: - a good jukebox - Guinness (in the desert!) - relics from Oklahoma and elsewhere - an awesome ice cellar (that you can't go in but still cool) - really cool gas lamp chandeliers - Great staff!! - Fun and interesting locals All the things that make an old west dive bar/salloon.
