Fast, friendly service. Food, however, was not that great. Had fish and chips. Chips were soggy. The fish was crisp and crunchy on the outside, but the inside was mushy and very bland. We tried out Gene's after my sister's play at the high school and I was pleasantly surprised. It may not look like too much from the outside but we ordered a family order of the fried chicken, 2 beef rolls, a small pepperoni pizza, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, and onion rings. The fried chicken was so fresh, hot, crispy, and delicious! The pizza was also very good, but I didn't care too much for the beef rolls. The beef itself was a little dried out. The sides were all god as well and the prices weren't bad at all. The service was pretty good, too, nothing outstanding or terrible. The chicken, though, made the visit worth the while! I followed a suggestion from a local neighbor, so since our choices are limited due the covid-19, I decided to order a beef roll with onion rings and let me tell you it was the best sandwich I I've had in a long time. One of our family favorites for the past 20 years or so. It is a very non-expensive place to dine but has good food. It is an American type menu with some special items such as a Beefroll ~ if you haven't had one of those before you will want to try it. Their service is usually up to par but there is not a non-smoking section and smoking section (they are just both in one large room) so that is why I give it 4 stars. Not a place you need to go out of your way to go and try but if you are in the area and don't want to spend too much on a meal it would be a good place to try. read more

First thing I thought when I walked in is, hmm needs a remodel. The inside of this restaurant is very old, yet spacious. It has a counter in the back that resembles a fast food joint, though they have a waitstaff. A bit confusing. The pizza was....meh. A bit strange, with the ingredients cut too large on top of the cheeze. We ordered motzarella sticks and were given 5 that were reheated out of a freezer bag. It was just not worth it. I've been going to Gene's since I was a kid. The chicken is really special. They also have incredible pizza and breaded mushrooms. My favorite has to be the beef roll. I also can't resist the handmade milkshakes. The bonus has to be that everything on their menu is available for carry out. Gene's Chicken and Carry Out is a secret treasure of Sandwich IL. Sherry is a great person who was assisting us. Definitely ask for Sherry. We had the 1/2 Crispy Chicken, chicken rice soup and Beef Roll was very good. Service in this Town Fair of Sandwich is wonderful. Talk about southern treat in a Midwest state. Gene's has been my favorite pizza for as long as I can remember. I had my 10th birthday dinner there (26 years ago). It is so very good. They do take an hour for delivery but that is ok because you just have to plan for it! Husband likes the gizzards on Thursdays. read more

I have been coming here for the last 25 years. I have turned plenty of people on to their Beef Rolls. These are the best!! Always get mine with a side of gyro sauce! Prices are great. Nice local place. As long as their doors are open, we will continue to come. read more

A toss up between here and brothers? You have a tie. Pretty much the same resturant but I would say gene's food is a pinch better. The service is mega bad but what can you expect from a resturant in this town. If wasn't for the price it wouldn't be worth going out of the way for. We always get the Philly and breaded culiflower. A pretty good place to stop and eat in Sandwich. I stopped in a few nights ago with my husband and daughter. I remember it being a little better years ago than it was the other night. Used to love this place! But they have changed over the years. Now their gyros aren't from the spit and it taste like cheap meat. Fries have changed. Pizza is all right but isn't consistent on taste. Was very hungry and trying to find a place in Sandwich to eat. One of my friends told me to try this guys out. I didnt know what to expect but I will tell you one thing it is an amazing place. Food is awesome. The people are very nice and professional. They treat you with respect and their service is amazing. It was funny because I live by O`hare and I drove 2 weeks later to get some to eat at this place because thats how great the food was and because of their service it made me go back. If I could leave zero stars I would. For the second time in the last year they have screwed up my order. I called to night to let them know even the remake they sent out was still wrong and the owner was rude and a jerk. I will never eat or order from there again. The worst costumer service I've ever seen. I work in the food service industry and would never treat anyone the way he treated me. I would be fired if I treated a costumer that way. Out of all the Greek family style diners in the area, I'd rate Gene's up there as one of the best, if not the best. We've never gotten bad food here, unlike most of the other restaurants in the area. The prices are very reasonable, and I'd rather see them keep it that way instead of doing a remodel and having to raise them for a better ambiance. Their patty melts and gyros are fantastic. The staff is always friendly and helpful. I've gone there to order carry out more than once. When I've sat down at the bar counter to look over the menu, they automatically serve water without asking. As someone just ordering carry out, it was unexpected to be served a glass of water, and a nice gesture that won't be forgotten. I found them to be very friendly and quicker than most fast food joints around. read more

This is one of those great local places - it's been there forever, has the same items for the last 25 years, same people have owned/run it forever. I love these places; I'll take them over chains any time. Two things for improvement: bathrooms - got to go through the ktichen (ok, I can live with that); huuuuuge menu, and the only thing on it that wasn't cardiac-inducing was a grilled chicken sandwich. My family has been here quite a few times and it the food is good. The beef rolls are the best! The place isn't fancy or super clean but if you can look past that it is a nice place.
