We got our Ford F 150 truck transmission done in Lynwood over a year ago, for around $5361.00. It shifted hard and we took it in several times and they did not fix it. We then took it to General Transmission for get a second opinion. They were honest about the work that needed to be done and the cost. They had to do more investigation and needed to drop the transmission which cost about $1400.00. It made no sense to have them put it back in and take it back to Lynwood to try to have the other (no so competent) company fix it. So, General did it on 10/18/23. My husband is self employed and needs the truck to work...no work/no pay, plus we need to move. GT charged us less overall than the other company. Painful lesson... The truck is working great. I had a transmission repair recently and it took a long time because they had a hard time locating parts for my particular car, but they did keep me posted on the problems and costs pretty well and it did end up less expensive than replacing the whole transmission at say, the dealer. I think he was conscientious about controlling costs for me. There's a one year warranty on the work they did also. This business has been around for decades which is a good sign. read more

I did everything I could to treat it gently, but a week before Christmas my van broke. It would only drive in reverse. Not having enough money to pay to get the job done twice, I carefully selected General Transmission because of their documented history doing more than they were required to do and that they have stood behind their work even when they have the option not to. One reviewer was outside of the warranty period and Mark repaired at no charge anyway (check out the posting from Elizabeth on 02/08/2021). They did everything they said they would do (follow-up, stayed within the estimate) They did more than they had to do (applied a coupon that was on the website without me bringing it up When they heard I was making childcare arrangements to get the van they brought it to my house. They got my van repaired (and delivered to me) within a week. Transmission work, unfortunately, is difficult. Mark is conscious of the financial impact and he and Cindy have worked out the best pricing they can to be fair to everyone. That includes the flat labor fee, the markup on parts, and leaving it up each customer if they want to pay an extra 3% to use their credit card. I appreciate what they did for me, and am confident the job was done well. If in the future I find there was a problem I'll make sure to update this review. read more

Nice people, but they wanted me to pay around $2,000 just to pull out my transmission and see if that's what was wrong with my car. They didn't even know for sure if that was it. After that, I would have had to pay even more IF they were right. Ended up going to a Chevy dealer instead and they found out it was something else. Something much cheaper to fix. I wouldn't recommend going here unless you already know for sure what's wrong with your car and if you're willing to pay A LOT. I don't want to call them scam artists but...it kind of seems like they are. Especially since it looks like other customers that went here are either having to pay more or less than what I would have for the same amount of work. read more

This is the third repair done by Mark on one of our vehicles. About 15 years ago, the transmission on a Chrysler mini van needed to be replaced. General Transmission quote was 1500 less than the local dealership. The budget was very tight, so we went with General. Mark completed the job quickly and completely. Fast forward to two years ago. My daughter's 14 year old Explorer's transmission went out. Mark's quote was very close to the local dealership, but I went with Mark because of our past experience. The Explorer was fixed quickly, and my daughter was back on the road. Two years later, and less then 9,000 miles driven, her transmission went out again. We called Mark, explained the situation. He said to bring it in and let him look it over. After checking the vehicle out, Mark said that he had no idea why this one part (sorry I don't remember the part) went bad. It should not have. He had never seen or had that happen before. He offered to fix her transmission for the cost of the parts only. Understand....we were over a YEAR past the warrant. Mark could have told use, "sorry" but he didn't, Mark and Cindy did the "stand up" thing that is so rare today, they stood behind there work, and made a problem right. I had my Tranny worked on by another shop and then something else supposedly went wrong with it again 6 months later. I work on vehicles all the time and I know that when you get into an area of the vehicle you can see other things that might need to be replaced soon so you either do the work then or at least make a comment about it. I spent a ton of money at the other shop and when I returned with the new problem they just acted like I still had another ton of money to spend on it. There was no way that the problem was not obvious when they had it the first time so I simply could not trust them. I came to Mark at General Transmission and he identified the new problem right away and the estimate that he gave me WAS EXACTLY what it cost!!! And he also told me that since he was not able to completely remove the tranny and go over the whole thing, (I didn't have the money for him to do that), but he told me anyway that he felt everything was fine but he couldn't guarantee that something else might not go wrong. That is usually not what people like to hear but I would rather hear that from a mechanic instead of them trying to butter me up or feed me a line of bull unlike the first shop. I had the pleasure of dealing with Ray from start-to-finish on a new transmission for my town car company 2003 Lincoln Town Car. Now, per my agreement with Ray, I will not disclose the INCREDIBLY fair and honest price that they replaced my transmission for but what I will tell you is that they charged me to the penny what they estimated. I will also tell you that three of them stayed late to get my car done by 6pm on a Friday like they promised me. I will recommend them to everyone I know who needs high quality repairs and since replacing transmissions is part and parcel with the limo/town car business, I will be bringing them ALL of my cars as needed. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY!!!! THEY ARE SCAM ARTISTS!!! If you do not listen to my warning make sure you have everything in writing before they do anywork as they like to change their estimates. They told me a high of $2,800 to fix my transmission and a low of $2,100. I called them to stop the job which they agreed they would and hadn't started yet, then when I called them back an hour later and told them the dealership I purchased the car at was going to do it for less with a longer warrantee and to tow it there they told me they already took out the transmission and in order to get the car back I would have to pay them $900 cash! For doing nothing!! Then they told me if I left it there and had them do the job it would be $3400 ($600 more then their high end estimate). They are seriously disgusting liars and to top it off they knew I was going in for breast cancer surgery the next day and still did this to me. I honestly have never met such horrible human beings in my entire life. My dealership came and towed the car for me...General Transmission put the transmission in a box in my trunk. Don't let the 5 star better business bureau rating fool you..thats just something you pay an annual fee to get....go to this place and check it out yourself, it speaks for itself. I have been wanting to post this for some time now. I have known Mark & Cindy for close to 25 years, I found him through the Little Nickel back in 1989. I had just purchased a 1979 Fiat X19 with a bad transmission. Mark had his business on site at his house at the time just starting out, I could tell by talking with him he was a straight shooting honest guy. At the time I was just stoked that he agreed to take on the project being what it was. Long story short, a few weeks and headaches later, the Fiat was driving and I was happy. Since then I have owned almost seventy cars and I think Mark has worked on a least a dozen or so of them and I referred a few to him as well. Mark was Exceptional with his service. I did a lot of research before choosing the shop for my transmission repair and am glad I ended up where I did. He quoted me a price the first day and never changed it during the process. In fact, he asked me each time we spoke if he could charge a little more to my credit card so I made about three payments until it was complete. We hit some snags along the way, really bad luck on my part. Apparently the final part needed for my car was nowhere in the US. Bummer. (Mark said it was only the second time this had ever happened to him) He was great throughout the whole ordeal. He checked with the parts person every few days and updated me regularly. In fact, he was going to offer me a loaner car so we wouldn't have to pay to rent a car due to our unusual circumstances! Luckily, we got our car back 2 days later and didn't use his offer, but GREAT customer service to offer it to us! And he delivered our car to our house since I work 12 hour shifts and was unable to pick it up for another 5 days. Great! Great! Great! I called mark on doing a transmission job on my 91 pick up he told me it would be 1095 for them to take the transmission out and to put it back in. A few days later I called him and told him that I would like to know how much 8th was going to cost to fix it. He told me that he couldn't give me a exact price because he didn't know how what was wrong with it. I then ask for a high ball amount a worse case. He told me he didn't know until he pulled the transmission out but he would not be able to do that Intel I gave him $1100. I then told him I didn't want to pay 1100 then have 1000 bill on top of it I could get a rebuilt for 1315. So he told me it should not be that much so I payed the 1100 like an idiot. Then I have been trying to get him to tell me the parts cost for three days now and finely he told me 1200 in parts he thinks . That he would call me later that day I still have not heard from him. So instead of paying 1800 to get a rebuilt transmission and having it put in now I am stuck paying 1100 for labor and 1200 in part and 200 tow bill. I should have read and listened to Angela B from Maple Valley. My vehicle was already at GMC with a quote for $3,500 with a 3 year 100,00 mike warranty, then I received a referral for General Transmission. I spoke with Mark and he assured me repairs could be done for $1,678, but only a one year 12,000 mile warranty. But for that price, I can do without an extended warranty. I chose Mark at General Transmission and was informed repairs would cost $1,678 and work would be completed within a week. 2 days later I was contacted by Mark stating my tranny was broken down and they needed another $1,708 to complete the repairs. I refused to pay the amount, but could not be allowed to take my vehicle in parts. I had to haggle with Mark to reduce the cost and discovered I was being charged 500.00 to replace a torque converter that did not need to be replaced. I would highly recommend another transmission repair company or make sure you receive a hand written and signed document with all repair costs included, plus witnesses to any conversations or paperwork. To throw salt into the wound, I am taking my vehicle back to have further work done as there are still issues with my transmission. A 1 star is very generous in this case and we will see how the diagnosis and repairs go this time. read more

I had a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder where the antifreeze had mixed with the transmission fluid. Mark offered to check out the transmission to see if it could be saved. After checking it out, he let us know that it would require a major rebuild. We decided to trade it in instead and Mark did not charge us for the inspection. Would give ZERO stars if I could. If you are someone not very familiar with vehicles, DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT let Mark work on your vehicle. He will quote you a price and then when the work is actually performed he'll say oh I quoted you the parts price only not the labor involved. He doesn't test his work well as he'll return your vehicle to you "fixed" but the next morning the vehicle won't start. It takes forever for Mark to get back to you. He ignores anyone calling within their warranty period. He tells his receptionist to tell people he's out on a test drive, and he never calls them back. read more
