Gary has serviced two prior refrigerators, a first-gen SubZero (horrible!) and a first-gen GE Monogram (a little better). But because these over-priced behemoths were headaches, we switched to a Kitchen Aid from the old Galvins in El Cerrito (RIP) about a decade ago and have never had a problem, until... Long-story short: returned from Thanksgiving trip to find the bottom freezer frozen over like a winter in Fairbanks before global warming. My wife immediately said let's buy a new one, it's time. But I remembered Gary. After one short cell phone call (he was enroute to help another customer), and a couple of follow-up texts, he not only diagnosed the problem but quickly walked me through the fix. I'm not a customer of General Refrigeration, but I called Gary enough to bug him that I owe him a great review! I have a vintage camping trailer with a 75 year old refrigerator. It just stopped working and I called all over town to find someone who could diagnose the problem and either recharge or repair it. I couldn't find anyone who would work on it, including General Refrigeration. However, I also couldn't find anyone who could even speak intelligently about the issue I was facing other than General Refrigeration. Gary took time out of his day on several occasions to help clarify how the system worked, how it is evacuated, how much torque the pieces should have, etc. He shared his personal phone number with me so that I could text photos to him so that he could provide better feedback. In the end I wasn't able to work with General Refrigeration or anyone else on the repair or restoration, but I greatly appreciate the time that Gary spent helping me. read more

I contacted General Refrigeration because my ice maker went out on my Samsung fridge over the weekend. Gary left me a voicemail the next business day letting me know the technology with Samsung is constantly changing and he wasn't sure if he was up to date. At one point, this owner was extremely good at his business. These days I am not so sure how to characterize the problem. The two times he has made in-home visits, he has down played the problem with my refrigerator and while pleasant, did not want to do a deeper dive into assessing what the problem was. Rather, he brushed the problem off by recommending I defrost the refrigerator. And while I expressed reservation, he did not offer to investigate further. BTW, I was not a one-time customer. I have used this business for several years. In fact, I started using this company a few years into having purchased my refrigerator. So the owner had a history with me and my appliance. My better instinct told me to get a second opinion, and I did. And I was right, the next company found the source of the problem and confirmed a much needed repair. The Gary I once knew, would have done the more intensive diagnostics. One might reasonably argue that maybe he felt from his experience that all the refrigerator needed was a minor tweak (in fact the unit that produces ice needed replacement). But having a history with the appliance and knowing how old it was, the possibility of something more serious should have been considered. I also indicated I'd pay for his time. So money was not an issue for me. I eventually used the second company to repair the refrigerator and they were excellent (and noticed that they consistently receive 5 stars). So there are a few takeaways from this experience with the owner: #1. He truly believed it was a minor problem and offered a simple solution #2. He didn't have the time to inspect the issue........ or the one which would make me pause to call him again: #3. He didn't take additional steps to get to the root of the problem or at the very least, rule it out. Two stars for the owner being very pleasant and responsive as other yelpers note. My freezer was working but my fridge wasn't, and Gary opened the freezer and knew exactly what was wrong in like 3 seconds. He swapped out a motor right then and everything works now. I wish I could give more than 5 stars! Gary is my new go-to guy for Refrigerater repairs. He is brilliant, creative, and a pleasure to work with. He solved my problem (which couldn't be solved by two other companies in 4 separate visits) in no time flat. My freezer was icing over because the door wasn't closing properly. And the door wasn't closing properly because the ice scoop was backwards preventing the door from fully closing. The previous repair people needlessly replaced the seal, the sensor, and the Freon, all to no avail (except the second company managed to break a spring in the door). Gary shows up and fixed the problem by turning the ice scoop in the other direction. Gary is the best there is. And did I mention that he responded promptly, and came to my house very quickly?! (I had to wait weeks in between appointments with the two other companies.) Gary has my confidence, my loyalty, and my gratitude. read more

The water dispenser suddenly stopped working. Check Warranty: phooey! six months out of warranty. What to do? Call Gary. He talked me through and in a few minutes helped me solve my problem--two days ago I installed a new water filter, flushed the system per instructions, and water/ice seemed to be working hunky dory. 36 hours later the water dispenser started making a loud noise and water flow dropped to a dribble. Next morning I tried reinstalling the filter, figuring that was likely my trouble source. Didn't help, in fact, was worse no noise and no dribble water. Arrgh. Call Gary. He talked me through in 5 minutes. Turns out that filter needs to be pushed in REALLY hard--had to close its little door with the heel of my hand--really shoved it. Magic. My 10 year old Jenn Air (Maytag) refrigerator stopped cooling. Another refrigeration tech referred me to General Refrigeration so I called Gary. The first time I called he spent a lot of time on the phone explaining how I might be able to fix the issue myself. It didn't work so I called him the next day. He came over within 2 hours to diagnose the problem. He could have charged me a bunch of money to try to fix it, but he recommended that I replace the unit instead. A couple of years ago, my ice maker stopped working and I gave them a call. Instead of coming out and charging me to diagnose the problem, Gary suggested that that my freezer defrost overnight.
