Dog park at Gene Reid Park in Tucson, AZ 11/27/21

OVERALL Needed a place to let my kids let loose after being on the road for 9 hours after visiting family for Thanksgiving in New Mexico. Gene C. Reid Park was the perfect place to do so - not to mention it was free! ENVIRONMENT It's desert life. I didn't expect lush green grass everywhere, but the many dogs on leashes seemed to enjoy the grassy fields that did exist. I'm probably forgetting stuff, but while we were there saw the following: + baseball backstops + dog park + playground (two separate ones) + ponds with lots of water birds + Rose Test Garden (don't know what the hell the test was... the roses grew fine) MY FAVORITE PART... How big the place was. NOT SO FAVORITE PART... No major complaints. SERVICE I never saw any park employees, but I can tell that they do a good job of keeping the place picked up. PARKING Ample free parking all around. Thanks, Tucson. | Park: 4 | Service: 4 | Environment: 4 | Price: 5 |

I went to the south west corner (22nd & Country Club) of Reid Park with my kids (8 & 6) while the kids were on Winter Break to keep from going stir crazy and we're pleasantly surprised by this corner of the park. There were large grass fields, which are a luxury in Tucson with backstops for soccer, softball, kickball... As well as a number of play structures for kids of various ages. A little further in there is a duck pond fed by some man made waterfalls that connects to a larger pond. Living in the desert, sometimes it's nice to be able to see some moving water. The kids loved watching all the different birds in the pond. A sign said that feeding the ducks was not allowed. They also have covered patios that you can reserve for parties or gatherings. Overall a great place to spend an hour or two with the kids. And this was just one corner of the park. There's the zoo, golf course/ driving range and other athletic areas. What a blessing to have a place like this in town.

Reid park just remodeled one of the playgrounds. There are giant chimes and drums for the kids to bang! The 2-5yr old section of the playground is nice too but not nearly as extensive as the section for the older kids. So, of course my baby wanted to go on the big kid playground...and I turned into a helicopter mama bc I was worried she'll get trampled or hurt. It's easy to see why she wanted to go to the big kid playground though. The older kids have a giant playground with a giant car that acts like a seesaw. The kids love it. They have 4 regular swings, two baby swings, and tucked around the corner they have two "rocket chair" swings the kids actually get strapped into. Lastly, there is a structure that looks like a giant trampoline obstacle course.

Beautiful park with a lot of walkways, grass areas, a lake, a pond, and numerous amendments attached to it. I could start listing for probably an hour, but you don't want to read that. I will say the zoo is connected to this park. My boyfriend, puppy, and I enjoy walking around this park because it is well lit at night (it gets too hot during the day) and the park itself is very clean. We do not really use the dog park because it is not well maintained, not because of the park, but because of some of the people who use it. It is a common problem...one rotten apple spoils the bunch. There are also numerous events held here that are a lot of fun. We were just at Puppy Fest which was so much fun and my puppy loved meeting other dogs. This is probably one of the best parks in Tucson.

This is a cool place to take the kids during the summer. They have the chance to swim all day and they can interact with other kids as well. It not too expensive and they have lifeguards here.

Or if you prefer, you can walk/run/bike along the wild side on the packed sand next to the paved trail weaving your way through the mesa verde trees and mesquite. Bring your dogs too, they'll also enjoy it. Most of the year, the river bed is dry and filled with scrub brush common in the Sonoran desert, but occasionally in the spring when the snow melts in the mountains, or during the summer monsoon season, the river will completely fill and the water will rage. Some have even been known to try riding a raft when the water reaches the banks. (FYI, don't do this! It isn't safe.) There are several city parks like Brandi Fenton where you can park and start your journey. Best to look at maps online to find the closest entry point and parking location convenient to you; as the park does cross over a lot of streets. In the distance, you will be able to enjoy the view of Mt. Lemmon and the rest of the Santa Catalina mountain range as it turns different hues of pink, red, orange, brown depending on the time of day you come. Sunrise in the summer months and sunset in the winter are great times to go in order to stay comfortable temperature wise. The trail was an almost daily staple in our lives when we lived here and walked the dogs along the trail or cycled and ran with friends. Even returning, while driving through town, we couldn't help but stop and take a stroll down memory lane by revisiting this lovely gem in Tucson.

Quite miraculously, they've survived decades of floods, droughts, and vandalism. They exist because during World War I, a man named Felix Lucero lay seriously injured on a battlefield in France. Wounded and in agony, he proposed a deal with God: If he survived, he'd use his natural skills as a sculptor to create religious statues. After returning home from the war, Lucero set about making good on his word. In the late 1930s, he lived in Tucson, Arizona, in a shack beneath a bridge. From there, he began creating beautiful works of art. While in Tucson, Lucero spent years crafting detailed statues of religious figures out of sand and debris from the Santa Cruz River, which he then slathered in a protective coat of plaster. He created iconic Biblical scenes, including the Last Supper, Joseph and Mary, and Jesus on the crucifix. Though Lucero died in 1951, his work is still standing--which is amazing, considering the statues weren't built from lasting materials and have faced frequent vandalism over the years. Many are damaged, but they still stand tall. Dedicated locals have worked to salvage and repair the sculptures after each vandalism incident, and in the 1980s moved them to form this sculpture garden near the very bridge Lucero once lived beneath.
