If you come to Tucson or live in the area, you should definitely take a stroll along the Rillito River path. There is a paved path great for cyclists, runners or walkers. Or if you prefer, you can walk/run/bike along the wild side on the packed sand next to the paved trail weaving your way through the mesa verde trees and mesquite. Bring your dogs too, they'll also enjoy it. Most of the year, the river bed is dry and filled with scrub brush common in the Sonoran desert, but occasionally in the spring when the snow melts in the mountains, or during the summer monsoon season, the river will completely fill and the water will rage. Some have even been known to try riding a raft when the water reaches the banks. (FYI, don't do this! It isn't safe.) There are several city parks like Brandi Fenton where you can park and start your journey. Best to look at maps online to find the closest entry point and parking location convenient to you; as the park does cross over a lot of streets. In the distance, you will be able to enjoy the view of Mt. Lemmon and the rest of the Santa Catalina mountain range as it turns different hues of pink, red, orange, brown depending on the time of day you come. Sunrise in the summer months and sunset in the winter are great times to go in order to stay comfortable temperature wise. The trail was an almost daily staple in our lives when we lived here and walked the dogs along the trail or cycled and ran with friends. Even returning, while driving through town, we couldn't help but stop and take a stroll down memory lane by revisiting this lovely gem in Tucson. read more

I am lucky to live really close to the park and the cycling/walking path. Also lucky to have covinced my guy to take our bikes out these past few months. Hey, they've been standing in the corner ,neglected, and he agreed to try it. What I love is you can park at the park, or any other on the route, and just jump.on. also you will see all age groups out here. People on 10 speeds, mountain bikes and some nifty elliptical kinds. I've seen strollers, skaters, joggers and runners and four legged fur babies. The best part is we all get along. Sure,some of us are slow and others are speedy , but it gives me incentive to push myself. The park and the others along the way have restrooms, water and places to sit and relax. It has given me more insight into all the neighborhoods in the area. Yup, still a newbie here I absolutely love this resource we have available and I can say I'm loving it. read more

This path is incredible for Tucson. Today Tucson was out!! All ages, all levels! Biking, running and walking. Some areas are more crowded so one needs to bike slower. There are open spots where one can ride hard and fast. The views and parks along the way are great!! We love to bike on this path because it is fun and safe!! The path is well maintained!! read more

After reading reviews of this place, I decided to come and check it out for myself; I wasn't very impressed... To begin with, while it's an AOK place to take a stroll, it is not by any stretch of the imagination what I was call a "River Park" - how could it be that when there's no water!? My furry buddy enjoys walking and sniffing, especially when there's water for him to play in. If your dog also prefers actual H2O, then I suggest you seek elsewhere for that experience :-( read more

Hey it is the desert ..... this is a huge long park along the river with an excellent path for walking, biking or running. Take water in hot weather. Women should have their cell phone ... there have been a couple of bad instances. Overall this is very clean and very safe. Oddly I have only seen some bunnies and birds, you would think that the dry river bed would be great for animal transition. Some areas have restrooms. This path has become my go to for outside running and walking. It is very well maintained. There are numerous garbage cans along the path and doggie disposal bags available. There are beautiful views if you get out on the path at sunrise or sunset. All along the path there are entrances, and the parking lots to access the path are in some excellent spots. In addition some of the parking areas have bathrooms that are maintained very well. The best part, is the online map of this place. You can see the whole path, see whether its dirt of paved, see where the parking is located, which have bathrooms, etc. And, the best part is they have mileage. A trail that wraps around most of the city! A great solution to get around town safely. 50 + miles of paved path which is suitable for walkers, bikers, runners, etc. The pros are that there are numerous entrances onto the path, bathrooms and even water stops. Weekends the busiest time, so I take advantage of the weekday mornings. It's not the most scenic route at least on the southwest side of town, and personally I don't recommend to go out alone at slow times of the day/evening....questionable characters hang around below the highway underpasses and it doesn't always feel safe, but that's just my opinion. Ultimately, I'm just grateful to have the river path as it allows for locals to enjoy a traffic free route. read more

Once you get over the initial sadness of realizing that there's no water in the river (right...I live in Tucson...desert...right, this makes sense), you realize that the park is a real gem. I usually come here for running, but the park is commonly used for biking, as well. There is a wonderfully paved path, as well as a dirt path that runs along side of it so you have options. Most of the path is flat, which is makes it a great option for anyone who is new to running/biking, or trying to get back into shape. Don't miss the opportunity to experience a bit of mother nature right in the middle of Tucson! Every summer night, thousands of bats wake up from their day's slumber from underneath the Campbell avenue bridge that intersects with the Rillito River Path (just north of the Trader Joe's) and they take flight! This fun and free summer activity is sure to impress kids and adults. To really make the night special, I recommend showing up just before dusk, grabbing a snack at Trader Joe's, and taking your folding chair to sit on the path or in the dry river wash to witness the coolness of the nightly event. For those who want to learn more, at least once each summer season, the Rillito River Project hosts an official education event about the bats. I also recommend this path for walking, running, or biking -- it is well maintained and is especially nice in the early morning or evening hours. read more

Pretty awesome, long walking and biking path. It took me 43 minutes to ride the entire north side path from Craycroft to the end at River and basically the I-10. That's a long time without having to stop! There are some nice parks, bathrooms and water fountains along the way. Cutting over to the south side of the path can be fun, but it starts and stops often. Be warned, near the mall it just dumps you into the mall parking lot. Not too safe. But it is nice to get a change of scenery sometimes. The path can be crowded, but be nice and yield to the people you should be yielding to and you and everyone else will have a great time. read more

Nice straight paths that are paved for running or jogging. There's a lot of scenic desert landscape to look at, and for those that are taking their dogs for a walk, there are dog scoop stations to pick up after your pet. In general, people along this trail are pretty good about keeping things clean, which is very nice compared to other parks where you have to really watch where you step! read more

I really really love this trail for a run!!! I cannot stand running uphill so the fact that this trail is long, straight and flat is quite the plus. I start at the River and LaCholla and run to Oracle and back...a great 6 mile haul. One of these days I want to go to Campbell, eat and head back. The fact that it runs along a river will is a plus when water is actually running!! If you are a walker, make sure to watch the wash closely for wildlife! Things to watch out for...bikers and rollerbladers. For the most part they're friendly toward walkers and runners but there is always an exception to the rule! read more

I love the Rillito Riverwalk! I bike a portion of this path at least 3 times a week, usually in the mornings but when the weather is nice in the afternoons too. I have never felt unsafe and enjoy the friendliness of the other people walking/biking here. Okay let's face it: we live in a desert, so there isn't any water in this river. Sure, every five months or so we get a big storm and some flows through (don't blink or you'll miss it). Otherwise, it's a dry wash. And that wash is often used for horseback riding (the word equestrian, which is such a cool word!) or for sleeping hobos. But along the River Park is the totally super cool path. For someone like me who needs to walk (and boy do I need to walk, run and bike) it's a great path. It stretches all over the place, from Craycroft down to the Tucson Mall, and wraps around along the I-10 (don't worry, you aren't on the freeway with traffic) and down to somewhere around the detention center on Silverlake. Along the journey there is water, restrooms, parks, and places to jump on and off. It's a super commute. Sure it's a bit hot during the summer. Go early or go late, or slather on a lot of sun screen, and hit the trails. Be mindful of other people coming and going on the trail including bikers and folks immersed in their music players. Dodge strollers and dogs. And have fun. And I'm serious about the sun screen. Skin cancer is no fun! read more

Great park to take the dogs on a walk, play with the kids, or jog around with the stroller. There are bathrooms, shading, a playground, grass, water fountains, and trails. I love to take the little girl I nanny for on a jog, not only because the stroller guarantees a nap without fail... But because the park is beautiful and feels quite safe! There are other families and children all around. We stop at the shaded picking tables and it doesn't ever feel neglected or dirty. In the evenings my boyfriend and I take our two dogs on a walk through the trails and let them bounce around in the grass if we don't get to the dog park before dark. The only bummer is there isn't much lighting in the park. The best part is the park has water fountains for both you and your pets, just like the dog parks! read more

I love taking my yorkie on a walk here on a nice afternoon. It always makes me happy to see so many people of all walks of life exercising (running, biking, walking) on this trail. The trail is paved, with views of Tucson's desert wash. I've seen the wash running on occasion, but usually only during the summer monsoon season. There are several doggy poop-bag stations and trashcans, which keeps the trail clean and beautiful. What a fantastic gem in a city. The paved walking/biking trail runs for 12 miles along the Rillito River. While most of the trail has sides on the north and south, there is a stretch from Country Club to Alvernon that only runs on the north side. There are bridges to cross over the river every 1/2 or 1 mile. The signs are very clear marking the distance to the next major street. It's great to push yourself to go just the extra 0.5 mile on a run. There are many parks to explore off this path, including locations with restrooms and water fountains (albeit, they spit out hot water in the summer). My favorite stop is at Brandi Fenton Park, where you can park as well. To explore a little in the desert, I like to wander around Rio Vista Park (on the South Side between Country Club and Campbell). read more

The Rillito River Park is a great way to get out and run, ride bikes, or simply relax and enjoy the desert landscaping. During Springtime, there are some quite amusing lizards and ground squirrels that run all over the path. Coyotes are also often seen roaming the wash. And of course, during Monsoon there's actually water in the river, so the park lives up to its name. It can be pretty crowded, so do remember to be considerate. Also, beware rollerbladers. I've been almost clipped by these well-meaning but out of control exercise enthusiasts. read more

One of my fav paths to run on in Tucson. It is domestically kept, but feels a little adventurous as city running goes. It has many fun bridges to connect the sides that are pedestrian exclusive and you can always find other runners, walkers and cyclists smiling back at you. Love walking my pup around the park, and all of the Campus Farm area. Very clean, very peaceful. The riverwalk is well cared for, lots of poop stations and I've noted that there's stations for people to fix up their bicycles while on the path. Very thoughtful! "Mornin!" someone says to me. I am not from here and always say, "Hi!" Fellow Arizonans tell me that "Good morning!" or "Morning" is appropriate. Do not respond with "Hi!" is what I have been instructed. I live right next to the Rillito Wash, and it is unique. There is rarely water in the "River," but when there is, it is incredible to see. I used to run on the pavement northern side, but now I run on the canal side on the south. Believe me, running along the Rillito is so much better than running along the canals in Phoenix. There is some shade and not as much monotony. At Campbell and River, around dusk in the fall, you can see the bats - in case you were wondering what people were doing under the bridge. You can also see some people riding horses in the wash. Cyclists, cross country runners, walkers - I love Tucson. Just don't be alarmed when you run under the bridges and hear a cough - sometimes there is someone sleeping up there. I never knew until one day I heard a cough and looked up! read more

I lived in Tucson for 6 years and I can't believe I did not find out about this place until today! I've been trying to find a dog friendly hiking trail close to my place and this was perfect! The trail was paved along with a side dirt trail that we were able to use. The difficulty level was very easy and leisurely for my fur-baby. The trail continued diagonally from Limberlost and Campbell to Craycroft. It seemed endless! The only thing I would suggest are more dog friendly water fountains along the trail. read more

One of my favorite activity to do is walk from Swan to Campbell and back. I used to run the route when I was into running and would take my dog to keep me company on these runs. Our beloved Arlo had to be put down a few months ago so I don't have my partner in crime with me. However, it is a delightful place to see the skate boarders, bikers, walkers, runner's come here to be in the beautiful outdoors that we are so lucky to be a part of. It's especially a fun place when the river is actually running during monsoon season or some Winter rains. Plus all the dogs out for a walk. Just a delight to have the Park go all the way through town. You can pick up the walk at many locations. Behind St. Phillips is a nice place especially at dusk when the bats emerge from under the Bridge. It's a wonderful site to behold. read more

A great way to escape the city without having to even leave it! I go here a few times a week with the pup and we love it. There is a well maintained paved trail and also a dirt trail. Beautiful views of the mountains and desert scenery! Sometimes you'll even see some coyotes just hanging out in the desert area. In the dirt trail a lot of people play fetch with their dog or let them off leash. It's a lot of fun and my dog always meets new friends! read more

I start my runs at the access point near River rd and Orange Grove off near i10. There's a small parking lot off of River rd where you can access the trail. I'm writing this review because while I was on my run someone went through my car. I still love this trail and think it is very good but this is just a reminder to never leave anything in your car while you are out. I was only out running for 30 minutes from 9AM-9:30AM and someone went through my car and had taken my dash cam and a shirt? and went through my glove compartment and my arm rest storage area. Luckily I never leave a purse or a wallet or anything valuable in my car on my runs, I leave everything at home. I did file a police report for that area so if you use that access point you are aware of it. Just something to keep in mind and to remember. I also did have my car locked, BUT I did leave my window probably 3-4 inches cracked open so that's how they obtained access into my car. Be safe everyone!!!! Leave everything at home! read more

This is a nice path for walking, running, bike riding, etc. I went on a weekday morning in October and it was not very crowded. I parked my car in the North parking lot which had several available spots. The views are typical desert scenery...mostly dry land and cacti. I passed a horse farm, Children's Memorial Park, and some auto buildings. I have heard there are great hiking spots around Tucson but I haven't heard of any other park paths such as this one. I think it's a good choice if you want to get out and move. read more

Honestly, I cannot believe I hadn't already reviewed the Rillito River Park/Trail being that it is one of my ALL-TIME FAVORITE places in Tucson!!! I think of it as one of Tucson's hidden treasures because 99% of the time when I mention it to a friend, they had no idea that it existed (even though people probably drive over it at least once a day!) This is the perfect trail for walking, jogging, biking, or even horse riding. It's where I first learned to run and it helped me go from running 1 mile up to 13.1 (a half marathon!!!) And its so long that the entire half marathon could literally be run on it! Over the past few years a lot of money has been put into the trail. It's gone from being almost all gravel to being almost all paved. And there are several parks ("kid" parks & "dog" parks) along the way. And its got gorgeous views of the mountains. Plus, in the Spring when the snow is melting the path actually fills with rushing water (same thing after a big Monsoon storm). It's one of the most serene areas in all of Tucson. Great for dog-walking or leisurely strolls with friends as well as for serious runners/cyclers prepping for their next big race. Whatever you're into - just get out there and check it out! I didn't even realize the was considered a park, because it's so long! This is really well-maintained and not too crowded. Bikes and peds share the path and it's seamless. I really enjoy walking and biking it on a cool day. This is a safe place to cut through the city and just enjoy your day. read more
