I first came here about two years ago to photograph the beautiful mural painted by local muralist Joe Pagac. It's the mural on the outside of the Himmel pool. He painted it in 2021 as a thanks to his childhood neighborhood in the historic Sam Hughes district. Red brick and adobe homes line the streets here. Mature trees line the paths. It is a pretty and quiet neighborhood. I took my dog Gretel to walk the mile perimeter. It was a Saturday afternoo and the park was busy! Kids and their families were outside playing, picnicking, skateboarding A few dogs played frisbee. A homeless man was off to the side on the south side pleasing himself under his sleeping bag. I walked past two more homeless encampments along my perimeter walk. I used a portapot near the tennis courts. It gets cleaned weekly. It is a nice park for the neighborhood and a good leg stretcher for travelers coming through, but I imagine this place could be a little scary at night with people sleeping al fresco. read more

This is a lovely community park with lots of areas for different activities and one of the coolest things, an old vintage metal slide that my kids had a blast zooming down. Slide definitely recommended in the cooler times of the year because it is not shaded unless the tree is shading it, but very fun and cool, and there's lots of other shade throughout. The park was clean and well maintained with a large playground and although I have not been to the pool, from the outside looking in, it appears to be very nice. Parking was close by and easy and the park feels very accessible. It's conveniently located and felt pretty safe, and overall is a great park. read more

Being new to Tucson, I was directed to Himmel park by a friend who also practiced Tai Chi. We visited there many mornings, to capture the oxygen rich morning air provided by the plentiful trees growing there. Near the East end of the Park are some vertical posts with horizontal bars, that are perfect for stretching and limbering up. Then there are plenty of shade trees to practice your Tai Chi beneath. The owners of dogs bring their pets for joyful and well mannered play. I have seen Yoga classes holding sessions, and on Sunday, a group of Dancers meet and practice free style social dancing to the accompaniment of a provided sound system. Everyone is moving in their own special way in this special Park. Thank Tucson for your great Park system. read more

Himmel Park is a lovely spot located in central Tucson. There's quite a variety of facilities that make up the park. It's home to the Himmel Park Branch Library, a grass amphitheater, two playgrounds, a swimming pool, tennis courts, and a huge field. I think most people enjoy the expanse. And there are decently covered spaces for kids to play in. read more

Himmel Park is a Tucson staple! Centrally located, accessible, and has a neighborhood feel. You can often see people walk their dogs, practicing yoga, reading, and catching up. I love this park to death. Great neighborhood and is well kept all around. I love the palm trees surrounding it and the place is generally clean and safe as well. I am guilty of it and I know some people aren't the biggest fans... but there is a small dog community here that come out daily to unleash their dogs. The dogs are all extremely well behaved and the community works together to ensure there are no dog poops laying around. The community does a good job also regulating aggressive/not trained dogs to be kept on leash as well. read more

The pool is one of the best pools in Tucson you can have covered plastic containers of water right by the pool as you swim. Nice little park to eat a packed lunch after swimming. No food in the pool area tho . read more

The playground at Himmel Park just got a remodel and it looks great. There's a spot for little kids as well as a new play structure with sun shades for the bigger kids. In addition to the updates to the playground himmel has large grass fields (a rare sight in Tucson) as well as tennis courts, a library and a public pool. You'll often find pick up games of soccer throughout the week and it's a great place for picnics and birthday parties. read more

For a small urban park there are many advantages. Room to walk, a few hills, a library, swimming pool, tennis courts, two playground areas. Nice little park not too far from U of A near lots of to go restaurants on Speedway, so you can get a bag and picnic. We usually come here when the Shakespeare in the Park happens. Grab food, blanket and chairs and watching a play under the stars is awesome. Check for activities. Good little park. read more

I LOVE this park. Yes, LOVE. I love the diversity of activities you see here. Soccer, ultimate frisbee, jogging, dog-walkers, you name it. I have even seen jugglers and sword-fighters multiple times. My most recent discovery is a group of gentlemen who hang out and play their drums on Sundays. Totally random: I once saw a group of people doing some kind of weird seance/ceremony on top of the big hill, with chants and all. This place is also host to mini-Renaissance festivals. So not my thing but it is really nice to see. I do bootcamp at Himmel and running the hill is a great way to get your HR up. I just got back from a Food Truck Round-Up held at Himmel and knew I had to review the park. The round-up had a very low turn out (which seems to be rare) and I was so bummed. Having a round-up at Himmel is a great idea because it's such a large park-it would be a shame if the low turn out would prevent more round ups from being held there. Himmel is a great Tucson park. It's huge, clean, and has a library inside of it. Yes, a public-library inside of the park. It doesn't get better than that. On top of this, my Corgi Daisy loves it. And, quite frankly, a Corgi badge of approval is the best badge to be gotten. read more

Five stars for being a beautiful park with big shady trees. However, I'm writing as a grumpy dog owner. First, the grass has those annoying burs which get into my dogs paws and fur and has to be cut out. Second, in addition to burs I have to contend with jerk dog owners actin like it's their own dog park with their off-leash dogs. Mine do not do well with other dogs, I feel extremely uncomfortable with dogs off leash running about. For some reason people feel exempt from the leash law here. Occasionally, I will come here for a lunch date. Some of the cement tables are a bit beaten up but they get the job done. I love the library part of this park. The tennis courts always seem packed. Parking is ample. There's a decent bathroom with a water fountain. I've never used the pool. It's a pretty park but not for my dogs, so not for me. read more

A decent smaller sized park which I use primarily for laps around and getting my fitness on. It has tennis, kid's swings and such, some exercise equipment that has seen better days. A number of people use the park to, shall we say, sleep in, but that's parks these days. The library offers one of the best perks here. read more

Himmel Park - Himmel Park 2019. Armchair workout? - Parks Near Me - Tucson, Arizona

As a mom with four kids, I spend a lot of time at parks, and I've visited both the well known ones and the obscure ones all over Tucson. Himmel is by far my favorite. There are two separate playgrounds, one with equipment geared especially towards toddlers, and lots of large trees that provide shady retreats from the sun. Several grassy fields lend themselves to soccer games, slacklining, tai chi, stilt walking, boot camps, cricket matches, and a plethora of other activities. On any given weekend, you may find a renaissance festival, drum circle, martial arts match, birthday party, or photo shoot. The amphitheater (or "Hippy Hill" as the locals lovingly refer to it) hosts a Shakespeare in the Park production each fall, and is also a favorite for kids of all ages to run or roll down. Dogs on leashes are welcome (there is a hefty fine for being caught with your dog off its leash) and people seem generally respectful of cleaning up after their pets. In the summer, the Himmel Park public pool opens up, and is a nice way to beat the heat (admission is only $1.25). There are also lighted tennis courts, and you'll frequently see tennis matches playing here. And Himmel Park is also home to a charming little library, which includes a wonderful children's section, meeting rooms, and computers for public use. The library also has free wifi, which can be accessed from almost anywhere in the park (and is kept on 24/7). Occasionally food trucks will park around here, and it's fun to grab a bite and enjoy it on Hippy Hill or at one of the picnic tables or benches located throughout the park. The city also parks several large recycle containers here, which is great for those bulky items that don't fit into your dinky home containers (like appliance boxes). If you haven't been in a while, give it another visit. The city has been investing money into Himmel, renovating play and exercise equipment, reseeding the lawns, removing old unhealthy trees and planting new ones, and updating signage. There are plans in place to build a courtyard around the library, and there is talk about incorporating some garden space. The neighborhood takes a lot of pride in Himmel and it shows. It's also safe - I've gone jogging here on many an evening, and the neighborhood combined with the all of other nighttime park activity (like jiu jitsu practices!) put me at ease. For a downtown Tucson park, Himmel can't be beat. read more

This is a nice resting spot when I'm biking home form downtown. I wasn't really tired but it filled my heart with joy to hear all the kids running and playing. I sat and cranked out a few pages on my book. Afternoons during the week is a good time to go if you're not into crowds. There's all kinds of events happening on the weekends. From birthday jumping castles to jousting. I think I've seen a soccer game or two. Now that I think about it these events happen late afternoons too. read more

Why would you go to Himmel Park over Reid Park if you are in the middle of Tucson? Himmel Park is a great place to have a picnic; the trash cans are emptied regularly and it is dog-friendly. You can play volleyball, soccer, frisbee, or basketball here. There is also a community pool. Himmel Park has a library on the northeast corner of the park. Himmel Park is on a large square patch of grass. In the early morning or in the evening, some people are doing "boot camp classes." That would be cool to see people doing tai chi. If you like grass and picnicking, Himmel is an excellent location you should check out. read more

I really "Like" Himmel park...sure, it's smaller than Reid park...however, I find the intimacy of this little park to be comfortable, friendly, and at times entertaining, with the sounds of drumming in the past from drum circles, jugglers practicing their art, and also in the past have been enthralled with reenactment of knights and sword fighting in display of the earlier lifetimes of our existence... Amazing huge park, great for babies. So the park has plenty of spots for toddlers, which was great since we have one. The green areas are well maintained and not very crowded, which allowed my baby to walk and walk and walk. It looks like a good place to have a nice bbq, and some people were taking pictures for a wedding. read more

When I think of parks, I picture green grass, tall trees, vast fields for kids to play, basketball courts and maybe even a pond or a pool. An acceptable park doesn't require every one of these features, but each one positively impacts the experience someone can have at a public park. Granted, in Tucson -- especially in the winter -- it's next-to-impossible to have perfectly maintain green grass; especially grass that gets stomped on with cleats throughout the year. Yet, somehow certain parks (i.e., Ft Lowell Park) are able to maintain exceptional grass despite the exact same circumstances. At my step-daughter's most recent soccer game, the fields become this mixture of wet dirt, dust and dead grass. Numerous kids throughout the park fell victim to gravity and a very hard, rough and dirty surface. The bathrooms are disgusting. I won't elaborate further and, to be fair, public park bathrooms aren't exactly known to be charming. But a little upkeep would certainly be appreciated by the general public. The positive aspects include space, plenty of separate fields for numerous sports and it's centrally located. It hosts numerous and sometimes extremely random events. It has disc golf / ultimate Frisbee, areas for joggers and walkers, soccer, baseball, etc. Plenty of tall trees and sections for little children to play. I just wish that the grass was attended too more frequently. I am not asking for perfection, or even necessarily comparable to what is produced at Ft. Lowell Park, but something that is a bit softer than hard dirt and dead grass. It's definitely not a park I would avoid by any means, but it needs an incalculable amount of work done. read more

This is a fairly nice park and alternative to the "big boy" of the neighborhood--Reid Park. There's plenty to keep you occupied in a relatively small setting. There's tennis courts, playgrounds (appropriate for older and younger children), basketball court(s?) and a large field. On my most recent trip, this field was being used by a number of people for flying kites. Fantastic!! There's also exercise stations for adults. The playground area has a sand substrate which isn't my favorite. I'm currently in love with the recycled rubber foam flooring used on playgrounds that I've seen in other cities. Still, the kids all seem to love the sand! Around the area are plenty of trees, all of which are either palm trees or other smaller trees that appear friendly for climbing (no thorns!). All in all, just a fun place to go on a sunny afternoon. Enjoy! read more

Great neighborhood park in Sam Hughes. There is a library, tennis courts, soccer fields, playground, basketball courts, workout (pull-up station etc) areas, and swimming pool. There is a nice path thorough the center where I like to walk my dog (on leash of course). The landscaping is well maintained with green grass!!! Great mountain views between the palm trees. Approximately 25% of the area is shaded. On Sundays you will find food trucks lined up on 1st street near Tucson ( behind the tennis courts). read more

My favorite place in all of Tucson are the tennis courts at Himmel park. There are 8 hard courts; 6 are in great condition. The other 2 have some cracks due to nearby tree roots. The tennis pro's Casey and Carl and very friendly. You will find Casey giving group lessons almost every morning. Typically the courts lights are turned on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The 4 courts on the south side have more fence barriers between the courts than the north side, so I prefer to play on these 4. Court fees are $2.50 per person. On the weekend you can find the friendly group of "Himmel Hackers" who bring their guitars and play tennis and music for a few hours. read more

This is the best park in Tucson. Seriously. They (Tucson Parks and Rec.) actually spend money on maintenance to keep the grass lush and benches clean, drive away the Hobos (without force) before the more affluent residents show up to play tennis, and provide baggies for dog owners such as myself to clean up the waste from their companions. Indeed, a nurturing environment for bringing the community together to enforce a healthy lifestyle. I'd wholeheartedly recommend bringing your child/pet/friend/lover/mentor/relative/archenemy here for a superb time! ******** HOWEVER, there's one glaring issue with the park users which most can attest to. Now, I've only seen this occur two or three times, but when it has happened, I've been close to calling the cops. Which makes me worrisome as I know the 'penultimate' or devastating issue will arise one day because of these ignorant owners. This being, the prevalence of lunatic dog owners thinking that by some godly affinity they can reign in their dogs by walking without a leash. Apparently positive conditioning can ensure that a dog won't attack another innocent LEASHED dog, ever. *WRONG* The attacks I've seen, usually by owners with pit-bulls (not to typify), are beyond insane. One innocent, little border collie with a wander-lusting elderly woman fell victim to an attack by a selfish dog owner that was looking the other way when his pit-bull lunged at the poor puppy. I held my dog back immediately and watched as the elderly woman fell to the ground. The pit-bull owner, just now realizing what happened, lunged to stop his dog, but the damage was done and the enraged pit-bull had drawn blood. The border collie lay on the ground whimpering, while the seemingly sweet elderly woman rushed over, still crawling on the ground. I was disgusted and hadn't been able to pull out my phone to record this, but noticed that blood was gushing from the puppy's neck! So, I ran over to help, as the man with his pit-bull sprinted off, can you believe it?! I tried to chase him down but the pit-bull started sprinting way too fast and I was already trying to help this poor, elderly woman with her injured dog. I didn't know what to do... Luckily, I managed to help the woman by carrying her dog back to her SUV and told her about the nearest Hospital clinic, while still looking for that bastard dog owner, to no avail. I found out a week later when the border collie was back with her owner, that she paid $1,000 for the stitching and to prevent her puppy's death! This is why YOU KEEP YOUR DOG(S) ON THE LEASH! Though not all dog breeds are aggressive, all dogs possess prey drive and when in a high-energy environment, death is likely to occur with UNLEASHED DOGS. I'm so sick of everyone acting like it's okay. People walk past with a sly smirk as their two dogs jog alongside without a leash, but I know, deep down, that the propensity for violence is there. Just waiting for that innocent puppy to come their way... So, just wanted you all to know that you should take pictures of owners without their dogs on the leash and send them to Tucson Parks and Rec. It's a $500 dollar fine as listed at the entrance, but Himmel Park has no security because the community is generally so kind to each other. Please, for the sake of the community, children, puppies, and our future, end the lunatics who keep their dogs off of leashes, report them promptly to Parks and Rec! (There are dog-parks, at least four in Tucson, so it's NOT an excuse) read more

Himmel Park is a nice, larger park in the middle of Tucson. It's a great alternative to Reid Park, but it can get nearly as busy at times. And rightfully so. The city does a good job with the landscaping and upkeep here. The grass is usually mostly green, the trees and bushes are manicured, and the overall aesthetic of the park is pleasant. It is almost always clean. I don't remember ever seeing trash on the ground at all, and they regularly clean the massive amounts of dog poop that's left all over because of rude dog owners who refuse to clean up after their pets. (P.S. CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR PETS, not only is it disgusting not to, but you can spread really nasty pathogens to other pets or even to us humans!) Himmel Park seems popular for the soccer players, as well as for BBQ's and jumping castles. There's even some playgrounds for kids. Overall, it's a really good park to have a get-together, or to just take an evening stroll. read more

my husband took our daughter and i to this park yesterday. it was a really nice park to walk around in. there were a lot of people in the park: soccer players, yoga ladies, dog walkers and parents with their kids. they have two playgrounds for kids with swings and slides and a jungle gym. it seems to be kept clean and well taken care of. read more

Perfect little park near my apartment. It is big enough for your dog(s) to run around. At different times of the day, you may see different group of people working out, playing baseball, on the swing set; such a lovely little park. After a long run and work out I like to just lie on grass and look up at the sky. read more

Fun park in central city. It was soccer fields, a play ground, tennis courts, a pool and a library. I often use this as a starting point to park at for runs around U of A and downtown. The grass is a little sad, even for Tucson grass. I still enjoy this patch of park near the U :) read more
