Half of our group had never been to a Korean BBQ before so we asked for some guidance and our server was happy to recommend some popular meat options. Everyone enjoyed getting to cook their own meats after first being a bit uncertain of doing so. The table favorites were the bulgogi, the Hawaiian steak and the brisket. We tried the spicy calamari and everyone that tried it liked it. I don't think there was anything we didn't like. The pork belly was sliced thicker than I'm used to so it wasn't a favorite. Otherwise most choices were good. She came to ask about dessert but we were all too stuffed for that. Service at times lagged a bit but overall not bad. The thing to be aware of is taking kids here and maybe even some adults. Unless you're ready to eat the price will be higher than you want to pay for a few bites. read more

Visited on a Sunday night with family and it was a bit of a letdown. We arrived around 8:30 PM, and about half the menu was sold out. I understand it was late on a Sunday, but it was surprising that so many items were unavailable. The waiter even asked if we wanted to upgrade to the premium option, but even then we still would not have been able to get several of the regular items. Some items were pretty good, like the calamari and brisket, although you can usually never go wrong with brisket. Other items were not as impressive. The server was also a bit clumsy and forgot a couple of things during the meal. The restaurant itself is large and can accommodate a lot of people and big parties. I have heard it can get very busy, but when we went it was fairly empty. Overall, I feel like there are better KBBQ spots than this one. read more

Worst experience ever Did takeout.. Couldnt do it online because it wouldnt let me select 4 of the same meats so had to do it in person. Manager (im assuming based on attire) was super helpful. Was told 20-25 min. 40 min later 2 servers finally hand carry my takeout containers from the kitchen up to the host stand. The haole girl proceeds to drop a container on the ground, right in front of me, and pick it back up like nothing and place it on the counter. Thankfully it didnt open or idk what she wouldve done then.... On top of all that she had the meanest RBF. def not someone who should be working anything related to hospitality. Fast forward Get home. Carrying the bag to my house, whole thing rips open from the bottom. Because why? The container she dropped is completely cracked so all the vinegar and water from the radish wraps is all over everything including the bottom of the paper bag. Luckily all containers survived and i didnt lose any food. Salad also had no dressing. And we got no sauces for our meat. Its cheaper to dine in than pay $80 for a terrible experience. All things you get for free during dine in, you have to pay ala carte for. Salad. Radish wraps. Rice paper. All the banchan. Tried calling them to talk to someone to get my tip back, because that def did not deserve any tip since it was def not prompt nor was there any service or hospitality from anyone other than the manager. I've been to this location before and usually have a great experience, but this visit was honestly disappointing. When we arrived, about half of the restaurant was closed off, and one server, Janelle, was handling the entire open section. She seated us and took our initial order, which included meats, krazy sauce, and calamari rings. The calamari took around 20 minutes to come out, and when it finally did, it was cold. It was obvious it had been sitting out for a while instead of being served fresh. From there, the service only got worse. It was extremely difficult to get Janelle's attention because she consistently prioritized larger parties and would walk past our table quickly without checking on us. Not once did she come by to ask if we needed anything or wanted to order more. We had to call her over every time. I ordered the krazy sauce twice, and both times she forgot it. There were also no grill changes at all, even though we saw her changing grills for other tables. Meanwhile, our grill was burning, and we couldn't get her attention to fix it. When we placed our second round of orders (2 premium steaks and 2 honey soy beef belly), the steaks came out quickly, but the beef belly took about 15 minutes. During that time, our grill was burning and we were already getting annoyed that our server didn't come to check on us. Because of that, we turned off the grill and decided we were done eating. Of course, the honey soy beef belly arrived right after that. At that point, I asked to speak to a manager. A food runner named Kyle helped us. He was very kind, apologetic, and professional, even though the situation wasn't his fault. He brought out the manager, Hoku, and this is where the experience became even more frustrating. Hoku did not come across as helpful or apologetic in any way. She didn't greet us properly, didn't ask what the issue was, and showed no urgency or concern. Instead of trying to understand or resolve the situation, she seemed dismissive and uninterested from the start. Her body language and facial expression made it feel like she had already judged the situation before even hearing us out. I had to explain everything without any meaningful response from her. There was no apology, no acknowledgment of the poor service, and no effort to make things right. To make matters worse, she didn't even communicate basic information like our total. I had to ask for it myself. For someone in a management position, the lack of professionalism, accountability, and customer care was very disappointing. They initially tried to charge us for the honey soy beef belly we didn't even get to cook, but eventually removed it. However, considering the overall poor service and lack of management support, I would have expected some kind of additional accommodation. Overall, the service was slow, inattentive, and frustrating. Janelle seemed overwhelmed and unable to manage her section, and the manager handled the situation very poorly. The only positive part of this experience was Kyle, who genuinely tried to help. It's disappointing because I've had great experiences here before, but this visit definitely lowered my impression of this location. If this is how service is when it's not even busy, I can only imagine how it is during peak hours. If a server can't handle all the tables in their section, let alone properly take care of a party of two, they should not be responsible for that many tables at once. I hope management takes this feedback seriously and works on improving both service and customer care. read more

Saturday February 7, 2026. After working out at the new Planet Fitness in the mall. We decided to go the food court upstairs. Looked around kind of expensive. Pay that much might as well spend a little more and eat good at Gen's!! Service is friendly and fast. Food came out right away. Let's start and get to cooking our lunch. Food is good!! My sister and her family love this restaurant. There was a newer location that opened near them but they still prefer to drive further to this location. This time, we had a party of seven (4 adults + 2 kids + 1 baby). We got there at around 5 on a Saturday and waited maybe about 10 minutes. Our waitress seemed nice but she must have been new because she was kind of terrible. She didn't even know how to start our grill (turns out you need to add water first so that you don't start a grease fire, which she wasn't aware of. Kind of concerning). She would forget a lot of items, we'd have to ask for items multiple times (including basics like water or utensils), and she would constantly bring out incorrect items). Our grate was also never changed (again, probably due to lack of training) until we asked, since some of our meats were starting to taste burnt. Avoid the cooked menu items. The kimchi fried rice and japchae were terrible. Stick to the meats. My top three dishes were still the Hawaiian steak, honey soy beef belly, and pork cheek. So it's nice to see that at least the quality of the meats have remained the same. It just seems like they might have a really high turnover rate and waiters don't receive adequate training, probably due to that fact. Went for lunch on a Saturday. Found out Fri/Sat/Sun is dinner menu/prices all day... we didn't know. Server number 1 was a bit slow but nice and courteous. She explained the process well. It took a while for our dishes. Took a while for our grill to be replaced, it was charring and smoking and not pleasant. They simply grab it with tongs and walk is with it. Hmmm. Not good if it drips on the floor... Server number 2 made up for it with awesome service and our dishes came out quickly. Food was good to excellent. Bulgogi had some chewy sinewy sections but was tasty. Pork belly was great. Thick bacon was great. Calamari steak amazing. Steak was good. Spicy pork yummy. Popcorn chicken yummy. Honey chicken was good. Asst veggies were ok. First platter didn't have mushrooms and zucchini was way too thin. Second player had mushrooms and zucchini was sliced a little thicker. Bell peppers should have been sliced better. Korean mochi with sweet paste inside was awesome. Our booth had a drippy AC above my seat. When we were seated, I thought it was damp because they had wiped down the seat. Wrong. Drip, drip every so often through the meal. May be why the second server asked is we wanted to move but by then we were settled and had started eating. Drinks are refillable. Would have been 4 stars if our first server had done better and the AC wasn't dropping on me. Tips: Don't dress up. You will leave smelling like smoke and bbq. Ask for daikon wrappers. Pickled, very thinly sliced, and you put your cooked food in it taco style. Awesome! Overall a great experience but go on a weekday for lunch for lunch prices if you can. Been to alamoana location a couple times and today was my second time at this aiea location! First off I'd like to say I don't like doing negative reviews but this one as a little bit of it....The girl that sat us put us in a booth and I'm a big guy it was uncomfortable but not unbearable, and I know I could of ask to be moved but I channeled me inner skinny guy and didn't mention it. Our server was great and the food is always good. But couldn't help but notice all the chips in the dishes the serve food on, one was pretty bad and I'll post the picture! Anyway another thing I noticed is veggies and sauces our out on a lot of tables even tho no guest are seated at those tables. We asked about the potato salad they use to give server bring out the food said they don't have, we also ordered the cheese corn and never have that either! I've done here a few times and my last experience was the best one yet. The server that helped us was the great. Very helpful and concerned. He felt like he wasn't helping us enough so he literally cut up my bone in steak before I even started cooking it. He was a very cheerful and great communication. As for the food and drinks it's always great. We decided to go with the most expensive premium menu. It seems pricey but it is worth it if you are super hungry and a mission to eat everything you can till you can't no more. This place is a bitt cold for kids without any jackets on. We're used to the slow service here at Gens but this time we received slow service and raw pork tonkatsu. The manager did nothing to remedy the situation. Then they charge my son as an adult, so I tell him that he's 9. The waiter said ok and walked away and then I'm pretty sure the manager told the waiter to ask my son. So the waiter came back and asked my son if he's sure that he's 9?! Like wtf. I pulled out my son's birth certificate real quick to prove it. This spots great if you go at a non-busy timeframe. Which means avoid any Friday/ Saturday nights. When we went during that time, we rarely had our server to come and take our order for meats. It was a terrible experience when you have a hard time getting a hold of your server. We won't ever come during those times. We went on a weeknight and service was wonderful. We didn't realize they have carne Asada tacos and adobada here where they bring you small tortillas to make tacos! It was a surprising flair to the Korean flavors. We also had the cheesy Katsu which I thought was a great appetizer. Don't get the kimchi fried rice- very mushy and super sweet. We love the sauces and matcha salt that they offer and the Banchans have great flavor. Best time to come is during lunch when you pay less than dinner prices! Plus get your gift cards at a discounted rate at Costco to enjoy more savings. I would've given this more stars but I feel like the service is below standard here. Whenever I'm looking for parking at Pearlridge, I always see a lot of people outside of Gen waiting to be seated in the restaurant. When I found their gift cards sold at Costco for 20% off ($79.99 for $100), I immediately bought it to treat my family. Informed them that we'll have an early dinner around 5pm so we won't have to fight the crowd...it worked! We were lucky to find good parking, no line outside and got seated right away...awesome! Our waiter gave us a few minutes to look over the menu. After giving him our order, the food came out pretty fast. The online waitlist system is weird (it told us there were zero parties ahead of us, and the server clarified that it meant there were zero parties of a similar size ahead of us. We stopped in for lunch and ordered pork belly, which was thick and yummy; two orders of beef bulgogi, and veggies, garlic and oil, and choke kimchi. Oh, and Sundubu soup and rice, which was my favorite as far as all the flavors. Placing the garlic in the oil and making one of the beef orders extra crispy fried in garlic was delish. It is at a mall and is a chain, so I assume it is very popular. They have a full bar. We were seated near the bar and couldn't help but notice aggressive language and borderline verbal harassment between the employees.. Servers constantly yelling and cursing at the young bartender over things she had no control over. As a server myself, I understand the frustration and pressure that we feel during rushes but that is no way to treat or converse with your own employees, especially in front of guests & children. My family and I felt so much sympathy for the bartender after seeing how mistreated she was. Overall, dinner went well but please do better. read more

My family is super fans of GEN, however in our last visit, everything was just NOT working out. As usual the wait to get a table, no big deal. Let's start with the broke tonsils, & scissors, they were dirty (like rinsed and go, with rest of food). Not too picky about the broken plates, but just want to mention it. The KFC was just fried crumbs, the meat was mostly fat. The drink ordered was not what I expected, got 2 drinks that did not tasted good either what I ordered, & I still pay it. Longest wait ever! Then the manager asks us to wait outside and it's not even busy at all. Also, didn't tell the other people who were also waiting on the inside. If you are looking for Korean bbq this is the spot! I have been here regularly since they opened, and it was not as good as it is now. Out of each Gen on island this by far is my favorite. Once you sign in, they text you to tell you the tables ready, so you can enjoy a stroll of the mall. (I am sure all the Gens do this). The seating outside is limited so the makes for a good option to pass time. Our experience: The service is what stands out. It used to lack on the service side the last few years, but when you have good food and a busy restaurant, it's to be expected. We came here this evening and the service was awesome. Nothing like before. I am sure every person will have their own opinion on this, and I'm sure not all servers, waiters, and waitresses are the same. It just so happened that today my family and I were served a great team. The waiter Kyle was amazing, and the whole crew tonight was fantastic. My family and I never had to ask for a refill (I know it's a little lame, but when I rate places of business I look at the little things like this). We got here at 5:50 pm. We ordered and waited patiently. The time slip shows 6:19pm, and we've only received one of the four meats we that ordered. We were just sitting on our phone, waiting. After waiting for 17 minutes, our server finally asked if we needed anything, and honestly, I told her to follow up on our order first. At exactly 6:50, we received two more meats--which were still not correct. I asked one of the staff if someone could change our grill because we couldn't cook our meat properly if it looked like charcoal. She then said that we should ask somebody else, "just ask somebody else or just ask a server. I'm the runner that's why. Who's your server?" I understand that she's a runner, but she could have tell anyone to change our grill. Our server was away unlike she claimed that she's just around, but did she even looked at our grill? After another 20 minutes of waiting, I told our server that we were ready to leave and that we'd just pay the bill. She asked if anything was wrong, like a typical server would, and I voiced my concerns as a customer. I understand they're busy, but I've been feeling more and more disrespected during my stay. Our server was extremely disrespectful. She kept nagging that she's around and that we should 'approach her'--she even said, 'Yeah, I did check on you and ask if you needed anything'--but only every 15 minutes! I forgot her name, but it starts with 'J' lol. I brought up this issue with the manager, who handled the situation well. Once the check was given to us, I immediately placed my card on the table and waited for them to come collect it. But then, our server came to take the check, and guess what? Another 20 minutes went by, and my card still hadn't been returned. That's simply unacceptable. So I went straight back to the manager, (who's at the entrance) and I told her that I had been waiting for my card for the last 21 minutes. $115 for one woo baesal, one japchae, one calamari, one deep fried Mandy and two drinks. However, he still did his best to give great service and was friendly. One the food came out, things were good. Portions were good and the cuts of meat were also good. My favorite was the woo baesal (thinly sliced beef belly) The place felt greasy and needs a deep degreasing clean and some of the plates and dishware were chipped and skewed signs of heavy use. We weren't allowed to sit at any booths, she wouldn't give us a reason why.... She said if we wanted a booth we would have to come back another day. TOTALLY CRAP!! As we was trying to talk to her and figure out why, they sat the family after us at a booth.... She said the managers were busy dealing with other things and it would be a while before we could talk to one of them. We ended up just walking out and leaving. I'm still in complete shock and confused. I feel like we were targeted or something.... When we first got there to be added to the waitlist, she saw me my husband and our child, she even asked if we were gonna need a highchair. Me and my boyfriend recently ate at Gen's in pearlridge... terrible choice. I gave this place so many chances to improve but nothing has changed. Our server checked up on us twice. I ordered 2 appetizers which was the cheese tonkatsu and the bulgogi fries but it never came out at all. We ordered the brisket, it didn't taste like the same from before. It tasted dry. I would definitely prefer this location over Kapolei. Been trying to go to the Kapolei location for a while now... But every time we go there, there's always a super long wait or a lot of food is unavailable to order. We made the drive to Pearl Ridge and decided to put our name down while we shopped around. We seen that our name was 3rd in line and small parties ahead of us so we went back to the location. When we got there, 30 minutes had passed and our name was still 3rd? When I went up to the desk I asked about it and the host said we just sat all the big parties and your name is 4th in line actually. When I asked about their "list" she said that was inaccurate and doesn't display all the big party's! This blew my mind. I wish they would tell us before hand while we are waiting with our 1 year old and 6 year old who clearly is impatient. I was super upset at that point and then they finally said a table opened up for us. Regardless, we made the best of it. We like coming for the Kalbi and my kids enjoy all the sides. This is the second review I'm posting for this location. The first one was to put the spotlight on our server JayC who was amazing and we always hope that we get him as our server when we go there. This time our servers name was Jayna. She was spot on with everything we needed. We never had to ask more than once and she checked up on us from time to time in a timely manner. We really appreciated her service and told her that now we look forward to having either her or JayC as our servers when we visit Gens Aiea location. Every other server that we've had cannot compete with these two. Gens should really look into having Jayna and JayC train all the other servers. We frequent this location often and every other server we've had hasn't been the best experience. We actually haven't been back to Gens Aiea in awhile before Friday night because of our last visit and the service we had. The floor manager was no help at all either. Excuses after excuses were made about why the server wasn't doing well. When asked "if you know she can't handle it, why do you guys keep giving her more tables to serve and aren't helping her?" The manager couldn't answer me. She could only say I'm sorry and moved onto the table next to us who wanted to complain too. The manager was only sitting down or walking around laughing with and distracting the servers. One party ended up speaking to the manager as well and left. On a separate visit, our waiter was really rude at first by saying "we start customers off with the premium unless you tell me otherwise" I was shocked because that was the first time we've heard that. When I say we frequent this location often, I mean it. That was the first time I've heard about that. I asked why is that? He said that's just how he's told to do it. Why are you allowing your servers to push the premiums onto us like that? The price for premium is already ridiculous to begin with. And in this economy?! No way. I'll stick to the regular menu. I'm usually the type to leave positive reviews, especially for places I genuinely enjoy. Unfortunately, today was a real disappointment. Before anyone comes at me, I understand how demanding this profession can be--my mother was a waitress for years, and I saw firsthand how exhausted and sore she came home every night. When we arrived, the restaurant wasn't busy, although it did pick up later. Our waitress appeared overwhelmed and struggled to keep up. I asked four times for a straw and waited about 24 minutes before finally receiving one. Our drinks were never properly refilled, and when they were, our used cups were taken and refilled instead of being replaced with fresh drinks, which is something they used to do in the past. Empty plates were also never cleared from our table. Small things--like kimchee--were never brought to us despite asking. Several requests went unanswered, and the restaurant had run out of multiple items--no green salt and no skirt steak. The grill also couldn't be changed when requested. At that point, my patience had run out as well. I haven't been here in quite some time, and based on today's experience, I don't see us returning anytime soon. Haven't been to Gen in Aiea in about a year. We came on a weekday for lunch and it wasn't busy at all. We got seated right away and was offered to try the premium menu which included dinner menu + $20. I didn't even know they added wagyu meat to the menu and other delicious meats. Our server was great and definitely convinced us to try the premium menu. The food was delicious! My favorite from the premium menu is the premium marbling center cut marinated short rib. The marinated long bone short rib steak took a lot longer to cook but it was the best tasting as well, the meat was super soft it melted it my mouth type of soft and I prefer my meat medium rare so it was good with a little bit of redness to it. As for the wagyu, it was cut so thinly it was hard to judge if I liked it or not. It reminded me of brisket. I think if it was cut into thicker pieces you would be able to taste the richness of wagyu but it was ok. Overall I totally forgot how delicious Gen was and would come back occasionally. We had a party of 5 for dinner on a Friday. There was a line when we arrived, but it moved quickly. We had Rachel as our waitress, and she was great! She checked on us multiple times to make sure we had everything we needed, and our food came out quickly. The food was delicious and everything was fresh. It was my dad's first time trying this type of restaurant, and he was a little unsure at first about cooking our own food. But after eating, he was pleasantly surprised and kept saying how glad he was that we went. I went to Gen Korean BBQ House on April 12 around noon with my boyfriend, about an hour after they opened. We got seated right away, which was nice and quick. We mainly came because my boyfriend loves making wraps with their lettuce, ssamjang, and garlic, and I was really looking forward to the rice paper so I could wrap my meat and salad, but they were completely out of both garlic and rice paper. We honestly thought about leaving at that point, but we were hungry so we decided to stay. After we ordered, it took about 20 minutes for the food to come out, which felt pretty long considering it wasn't busy. Our server was okay. He checked in occasionally but, anytime we asked about something missing, he had to go back and check instead of already knowing the status. Overall, the service just felt off. I asked for an extra pair of tongs and never got them. My boyfriend also asked for a few things that never came. Our salad didn't come out until much later, and we didn't even get the usual banchan you expect with Korean BBQ until we asked about it more than halfway through the meal. On top of that, they only gave us one napkin each, and they were out of several items like cilantro, garlic, rice paper, and even grenadine for Shirley Temples. It felt like we were constantly having to remind them about things the entire time. Overall, it was a pretty disappointing experience.
