So here is the story. My wife and I were driving from Cincinnati to Kingsport TN on July 12th. Our 2019 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Car breaks down on 75 south due to an HEV light. Thankfully my wife calls AAA for a tow. We know that we have to tow it less than 100 miles or we pay extra. So we look up the closest Hyundai dealer headed toward home. And we come across Gates Hyundai. I call them Saturday morning around 9 to see if they can look at the issue. I am told by the tech (Ethan) that there are only oil change people in on Saturdays. I wait til Monday and don't hear anything from Ethan so I call Monday afternoon around 4. He says the tech is looking at it and can't get the engine to start so he is trying to bypass the code to see what else is wrong because he is only getting a communication error code and he will give me an update tomorrow. (First of all, does that not sound totally crazy?? The car basically went into safety mode because of an HEV issue and they tried to start it anyway. WOW) So Tuesday the 16th rolls around and I get a call at 11:20 or so from Ethan. He says the issue is a Power Relay Assembly. Part is a $700 part and they order it. ETA is Thursday the 18th or Friday the 19th, so car should be fixed when they get it ( 1 labor hour job.) I call Thursday, no part. I call Friday, part is now on back order and we don't know for how long. So I ask Ethan, "Hey, this is our main car, so can you just call me once a day with an update even if it's nothing?" Monday the 22nd + Tuesday the 23rd rolls around and I once again don't get a call so I call late Wednesday the 24th (12 days since being towed in now). Part miraculously comes in as I call.... LOL. It's now Thursday the 25th around 11am and we need to know if the car will be done or not (reminder, we live 120+ miles away in Cincinnati) so we can get a baby sitter for our 2 year old and 7 month old. I call and am told it will be done by 2 pm. My wife and I leave at 12 noon, stop for Lunch, and get there at 3:10pm NO JOKE... AS WE PULL IN, we get a call from them saying that part didn't fix it. We go in and talk to a service manager named Richard. He tells us that the relay was the first issue, but the Safety Plug was bad as well, they just didn't know until the new Relay was put on. So they give us a loaner car and we drive back home. Paid a baby sitter $85. So Monday July 29th the Safety Plug is put on and that STILL didn't fix the issue, so we are told "Hey, it's the 12V battery now so we are going to put in a new battery." So once again we go most of Monday not hearing anything, so I called back late Monday afternoon. They put in a 12V battery and yet again, nothing! So now they are recommending a new Hybrid battery. And oh, yeah, we already called Hyundai and your warranty company and it's not covered. At this point we are up to $1600+ not including a $7,000 battery in costs and NOTHING WAS FIXED. So my wife escalates the situation up to the GM Scott Boggess. Scott is totally dismissive of the situation as we ask to take off all parts and just let us come tow the car back. We tell Scott that we want to pay nothing more than a diagnostic fee. They were trying to make us pay roughly $1005 because they didn't want to take a loss.... LOL! WHAT A JOKE. We had the loss of time and money! Finally they agree that we will pay $202.34 for a diagnostic and we will tow the car to our mechanic. So we drive back down to Gates over 2 hours, pay $120 to tow the car on Wednesday July 31st to our mechanic in Cincinnati. I get a call on Friday from my mechanic saying "I don't know what Hyundai was doing. But we looked at the data we were getting back from your car. Looks like there was a communication issue and the car put itself into a safety mode because it was basically off timing. We did a software update and it's been running since early Thursday. We drove it around 3 times and it's running like a dream. How does $440 sound." RUN AWAY AND SAVE YOURSELF THE STRESS!!!! read more

Went here to see if they had a car I was looking for. They asked if I wanted to trade in my car for the new car I would buy. After inspection, they would only give $500 for it. The three star is not because anything bad happened here. It was just an okay experience. They were really nice to offer to pick me up if I did choose to buy a car because I would have to leave my car there, drop off the new car at my place and then go back and retrieve my car. If I could give zero stars... I would. I still can't believe the awful service we received. On Monday, my husband's car broke down and he had it towed to Gates Hyundai. He was pretty sure he knew the issue was with the bracket holding his alternator. Bolts had fallen off and caused his fan belt to be destroyed. He had work done on his car due to recall so we thought it'd be best to take it back there. They then charged us $170 to tell us he needed a new alternator and this would cost around $1700. We knew this wasn't right. We had the car towed to Evans Auto. When it got there he called us to tell us the alternator was now missing and another piece we had bought for the car and left in the backseat!! After going back to get the parts it turns out they had lied to us, because the alternator was completely fine! I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the problem was caused from when Gates worked on our car previously... but I can't be for sure on that. Evan's Auto was amazing and fixed our car for an extremely affordable price! I can only assume these mechanics work on commission and wanted to try and make as much money off of us as possible by buying a part we didn't need. They managed to get $170 to waste our time, but we will not be returning. read more

This was our first time purchasing a car out of State. We have two Huyndai dealerships near our home. One is approximately a 15 minute drive, and the other abour 40 minutes. The one we have purchased 2 other Huyndai's off of. We attempted to stay local and purchase our vehicle from the one we had dealings in the past, but they did not want to try and attempt to get where we needed as far as payment goes. The other dealership was way off as well. My husband went online and tried to find my Sonata and found one that met all our needs at Gates. It wasn't too long after he submitted his online requets, that he was contacted by Zach. Not only did Zach contact my husband quickly, he also made up a video so he could see the car first hand, since there were not any pictures online of the vehicle (it had just arrived on the truck). They had sent us one deal, and even though it was not where I needed to be, we made the 3 hour drive to see the car and attempt to work something out. After we drove the car, they presented the same deal to us. We told Zach, that we had to be a X amount, and that just wasn't going to work for us. We thanked him for all his time, but we were going to have to pass. Zach went back to his Boss, and they made it happen. We were escatic! They made it quick and easy. Everyone was super friendly and valued our time. While we were waiting on them to type up our paperwork, another employee took me out and showed me all the features of my car and how to link my phone with the car. I really appreciated this, because most dealerships wait until you are about to leave. So the used our down time to go over the car. This meant a lot to us, especially since we had a 3 hour drive ahead of us. The only complaint I have, is with the person in charge of finance. We had first told Zach that we were going to go through our Credit Union, and then had decided to use Huyndai finance. We told him that we had been approved and was fowarding the info over to him. However, the finace person ran our credit again through Huydnai (even though we already had approval), AND through 4 other banks. I have worked hard to try and raise my credit score, and did not give them permission to do so. I am pretty sure they are suppose to ask before running your credit through every bank or finance company they deal with. This I did NOT appreciate for one minute, and the dings on my credit score. So, I would make sure you stress this to them, prior to giving them any information. However, given all the other aspects, if/when I need another Huyndai I would reach out to them to work out a deal. I apprecite their work in getting me to the place I needed to be, and back in the Sonata that I have missed driving. I would recommend them for sure if you are in the market for a Huyndai. read more

The new employee they partnered us with was polite and did his best. His trainer was not helpful verging on rudeness. Maybe the trainer was having an off day, maybe it's the heat. My daughter had a 2013 Hyundai Sonata with that famous 2.4 engine. Famous for failure! Her engine was going bad but Hyundai said they couldn't replace it until it blew up. They were getting close to go on vacation but engine was making so much noise they were afraid to take it. So they traded it in to Gates Toyota for a Rav 4. Two weeks later Hyundai called her to pick up her car the engine has been replaced! How sad. Gates Toyota sent car over to get new engine in my daughter's name. Very bad business. I will never buy anything from the Gate's Family if this is how they conduct business. I used to be a customer!! read more

The people are great when it comes to buying your car. But when it comes to helping fix it it is a nightmare. I got a new engine 3 months ago. They had it for 9 weeks. After 3 months of having it now it is having another issue and no one seems to know how to help other than fixing it. The parts are no where to be found and they have NO loaner cars, which I was told at first one wouldn't be given to me because ky warranty didn't cover it even though had they done it right in the 9 weeks they had it, I wouldn't be in the position I am right now with NO car. After struggling for 7 weeks last time, they finally gave me a loaner the last 2 or 3 weeks of it all. Now we are at yet another situation where they can't help. This is completely aggravating and disappointing from Gates. I have been with them 7 years and this has been the worst yet. No big issues have happened in the past. My car is a 2014 with 41,000 miles and it shouldn't be where it is now. It has been well maintained and cared for. Before you buy, just know they are great but thats their job when selling. But when it comes to fixing things later on down the road, good luck. read more

With the sudden temperature changes, a few lights on the dash of my car keep lighting up and the service team here was ready to help and even washed my car! Gates Hyundai has treated me great the few times I've taken my vehicle to them. I first used them because my original dealer, Hyundai of Nicholasville provided terrible service in every way and ignored me when I asked them to look at what appeared to be rust spots in the paint of my new Accent. After giving up on Hyundai of Nicholasville (after months of the run-around or completely ignoring me), Gates Hyundai quickly figured out that it was rail dust. They gave me a loaner car and within a couple of days the problem was fixed. Most recently I took my car in for a synthetic oil change for a reasonable price of $60. They also inspected the vehicle, investigated a strange noise, and washed the car for free. I barely had time to drink the free water and eat the free chips in the waiting room before I was out of there. The whole thing probably took 25 minutes. read more

Back when I owned my Santa Fe, I'd usually take it to the dealer in Lexington for service, since I'd had great results there (I couldn't find a good foreign mechanic in Richmond I could trust). I wish I'd just kept going to Lexington. I brought it in for a timing belt replacement, which had to be done at 60k. Well, it doesn't have to be done, but if it fails and causes engine damage after 60k, Hyundai's a lot less likely to honor the warranty. I left it with them in the afternoon, and told them to only perform the timing belt service, and not to perform anything else until I called them. I wanted to ponder my options with the other "recommended" services. I didn't really think they were necessary, but I wanted a second opinion from my dad. I got a call the next day from them, telling me it was ready, and I could pick it up. Total bill, 800 dollars. "What the hell?", I exclaimed. They said they did did the whole 60k service. After I told him I did not authorize it, the guy on the other end of the phone (the parts manager), said there was nothing he could do (basically, tough shit, cough up the dough). I told him I wasn't going to pay it, and I'd call back tomorrow and talk to someone. Talked to Brian, the service manager the next day, and his whole attitude was "What do you want me to do about it?".. really off-putting. They finally budged and didn't charge for any of the services, and I presumed, fished the old parts out of the trash (if they even did any work.. I checked and my air filter was filthy), and put them back on. I went in to pay, and the service manager brings 2 of his techs into the office and they all stare me down while I'm paying the bill. He left the oil change on there, and I told him "No, I do my own oil changes. I didn't authorize this either." To which he got even more red and said "So I guess I'm gonna have to eat the cost on this too?" I also remember once, before I ever took it in for service, asking them if they'd order a new console lid, since mine was cracked. I never got a call back. So, their parts manager blows too. I left with my car, and have never returned. Sorry Lexington Hyundai dealer, I'll never cheat on you again. Gates, your customer service absolutely sucks, your Hyundai service people are crooks and liars, and I'll never set foot in one of your dealerships again. read more

I bought my first Sonata at Gates Hyundai Richmond KY. Upon the purchase the agreement was that the down payment would be "rolled into" the trade in of my other vehicle. As many of us know, when you're signing all of the papers to purchase a vehicle, the finance manager knows what to do and how to distract you. Well, after all was said and done, after I received numerous phone calls from Curtis Ream on my personal phone and AT MY WORK, he threatened to sue me for a down payment on this car. I endured this for 6 months until he threatened me, realizing then, that by fighting this in court would only cost me more. I will never purchase another vehicle from any Gates owned business and I recommend anyone reading this thinks twice about taking their business here. They are clearly not business men, you cannot trust them nor their word. Crooks is putting it nicely! read more

He easily answered all of our questions and allowed us plenty of time to make our decision. When it came time to sign the paperwork, the rest of the staff was also friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. We've use this service department every since we bought our Santa Fe 2 1/2 years ago. We live in Lexington the dealership is in Richmond. They send someone to my wife's work when she worked in Lexington leave her a vehicle then service our vehicle and return it all on the same day. My wife now works in Georgetown and nothing has changed they send a man to her workplace pick her vehicle up take it back to Richmond complete the repairs and return it all in the same day. Great service excellent repairs always a smile on their face I give this dealership service department five stars. read more

If I could give negative stars, I would. This awful place has had my car for over 3 months and has awful customer service. M engine needed to.be replaced and they told me a maximum of 5 weeks. We are pushing 14 weeks. They keep telling me it will be done today and have been for the past week and a half. They dont communicate at all and didnt even give me a rental while I waited for them to fix their own freaking mistakes. I am sick of this place and no one should ever take their car here. I compared prices with other dealers and got about the same price at each dealer, within a couple of hundred dollars. Gates was $137 over the cheapest offer and the last dealer I shopped; but the staff was far more enjoyable to deal with and got me a better interest rate. After the purchase I started to use their service department for both of our Hyundai cars. I had one communication break down and it was resolved quickly. They have provided great service and repairs for my cars for over 2 years. I would recommend them over other central Kentucky dealers for sales and service. read more

FIRST OFF I bought a poniac g6 2010 for 10000 a week later the transmission goes out ... what the hell... so I call them up they say what do u want us to do about it after a couple of da6s of fighting it they fix the transmission for free..... 3 days later the head gasket blows and the timing belt snaps causing engine damage..... and no nothing was low on anything. .. so I call back again and tlk the manager they say theres nothing theycan do..... wtf they are liars and sell crappy cars. read more

This is my 1st car buying experience. The salesperson was awesome and very helpful. He would email me back on any questions I had and was very helpful. A few weeks later I dropped my car off for the 1st car wash. When I went to pick it up the service guy backed my car into the one parked behind it. It only put a small dent and some scratches. I understand things happen. They gave me a nice loaner. 4 days later I went to pick it up. While wiping the dirt smudges from the trunk inspecting it I noticed a deep scratch on the trunk the size of my fingernail in a cross shape. I assumed they set something heavy on it. I wouldn't accept it. 3 days later they called and I ask if it was washed and they said yes. When I picked it up the outside was clean but inside was a 1 minute job, windows was streaked and dusty. I am very disappointed in the service department. The best part of the deal in buying my car was the service department. I'm afraid to get my oil changed there when the time comes for one. I may be wrong but I believe a dealership is only as good as the service department. The trouble I'm having with them at this moment is the place I got my vehicle financed through don't have no record of me. I hope this get resolved soon; or maybe they will give me the car lol wishful thinking. I would say that my next car buying experience will be somewhere else but this will be the only new car I will ever own unless I win the lottery. read more

Good experience with Gates Hyundai. Traded in my 2012 Jetta TDI for a 2012 Civic Si and received a much better trade-in than with other dealers I had spoken with. I don't know how much of that was over allowance and added elsewhere, but on paper it seemed to be a good deal. Ended up getting the car I wanted for the payment I wanted. My only negatives with my experience was the sales manager pushing warranties HARD on me. I'm not exactly sure if he was genuinely concerned about the car or he just knew the markup on these plans were really, really high. My other minor complaint was the car was not serviced before I took delivery. I changed oil in the car the next day and it was extremely filthy/black. But (so far), the car is doing really great and the staff was helpful in getting you in/out the door quickly. I drove two hours to Gates Hyundai from Eastern Kentucky. read more
