At the far end of Long Ashton, Gatcombe farm is a quaint farm with a really rural atmosphere, even though Bristol is only about 10 minutes away. With geese, sheep and ducks at the front of the farm, this is an ideal place to entertain children on a weekend.
The farm shop itself has seen a massive transformation in the last five years. I remember when it was not much more than a small stall in one of their barns. Now, though, it's a fully fledged building in its own right, complete with butcher's shop at the back, with all the necessary state of the art equipment. The shop stocks everything from pastas, to fresh fruit and veg, to a really impressive supply of fresh meat, available from the butchers' counter at the far left wing. The meat is either from the farm itself, or else locally sourced.
They've also got a cafe/restaurant to the right of the shop, which serves a hearty menu of locally sourced food at good prices - mains generally below a tenner, and paninis under a fiver. They serve full english breakfasts all day (always a massive plus!), and the restaurant doubles up as a carvery, which gets very busy on a Sunday, as you can imagine. A really worthwhile and sustainable enterprise. read more
