Bristol Sweet Mart has been on St Marks Rd for quite some time now, having been rated one of the best businesses in the UK. It was interesting to see if they would expand (and how) or if they would continue to run the same. The Deli is the latest addition to this little empire, delivering a unique taster of some foods you wouldn't find in your standard high street deli. Lamb kebabs for 99p (think traditional not pitta bread and mayo), some truly delicious paneer and a sweet section better than Willy Wonka's front lawn are some examples of this new enterprise. The service is as professional, friendly and polite as the main store and similarly I'd be surprised if it doesn't do very well indeed. read more

The Bristol Sweet Mart is Bristol's legendary cornucopia of exotic fayre. Now into its third generation, this family business looks set to carry on developing its exceptional reputation way into the future. The commitment to excellence is impressive, but it's the progressive nature of the business that is truly inspiring. Many of the third generation are recent graduates and female. It is this young feminine influence that has spawned this latest incarnation of the Bristol Sweet Mart, and, for a former Ugandan family of Gujarati origins, this is an outstanding achievement - we would all do well to follow their lead. Recently refurbished, the shop now boasts streamlined aisles with incredibly well ordered stock, and a new deli counter serving a unique and mouth-watering range of food, which is all homemade. Their specialty is chaat, the general term for a selection of nutritious and delicious snack foods with more ingredients than I have word count. They are also committed proponents of the Bristol slow food movement. All of their curries are slow cooked ensuring that the flavours of the ingredients have the time to work their magic, ensuring that the results are authentically superb. It's not surprising that they supply over 100 local restaurants and now cater for a number of corporate and private business clients. Carrying over 8,500 products including fresh produce, dry food and kitchen equipment, the product range is exhaustive. The service is second to none and the knowledge base of the staff is mystifyingly comprehensive. As some of the food on sale is unrecognizable, much less pronounceable, the input from the staff is invaluable. Experimental cooks have cause for celebration. Ask anyone who works here what to do with a certain ingredient and you'll come away with a variety of recipes to try out at home. This is a business that rekindles my faith in human nature. It's not just about the money, it's about quality of life, and getting things right. New developments include a seating area in the deli planned for the summer, and eventually cookery classes, when they find the time to organize them as properly as they would like. It's great to see a shop like this in a less mainstream area of Bristol, giving the residence in the surrounding area something that people in the City centre wont really have access to. The Sweet Mart has a fantastic selection of foods, spices, etc ranging from fresh fruit and Veg to exotic spices and herbs. If your looking to add a little extra 'zing' to your meal it's a great place to come, although don't let the 'zing' go to your head (as my housemates found out with my recent curry!) The website as well is brilliant, providing you with alot of info as well as an online shop. Choice is something you definately get here, as thier website states: "Bristol Sweet Mart is the biggest supplier of Ethnic Foods and Spices in the South West UK, to the general public and to the Indian Restaurant trade. Which means we have the stock ready to sell to you." But that choice and variety means that quite a few of the items can be a little overpriced, but it's definatley worth it. read more

As a local resident to St Mark's road, the fabulous Bristol Sweet Mart is a staple shopping location. With its maze of aisles, the Sweet Mart takes you on an exotic journey; starting with obscure and common vegetables and fruits, to every type of pulse, cereal and seed, all the spices you could wish to purchase and, of course, the fantastic tinned, jarred and microwaveable lazy food of the likes you have never seen! Then there is the Deli Bar - an array of vegetarian and meaty delights to keep blood sugar levels up and spirits high whilst pondering the wondrous shelves of delights. I have tried most of the deli counter and would recommend it all - although, I have yet to try the green stuffed chillies. One day, I will build up the courage! To top it off, the majority of staff there are friendly and helpful - although, there is always one grump in every establishment. They are never unwelcoming and you absolutely ask for help if needed, without being made to feel a bit ignorant. So, if you have a spare afternoon, or would simply like to spruce up your pantry, I would undoubtedly recommend popping into Bristol Sweet Mart for a foody adventure! read more

If I was allowed to shop in only one convenience store ever again, I'd have to choose Bristol Sweetmart in the Easton area of Bristol. I could while away hours just looking at the mind-boggling array of foods they stock there - from knobbly vegetables you'd never see in Tesco to wonderful Indian and Middle Eastern foods such as baklava (sweet honey-soaked pastries) and jars of tangy makdous (tiny aubergines stuffed with chilli, walnuts and spices). Then there's the strange-smelling Ayurvedic Soaps, 'beauty creams', henna hair dyes and herbal toothpastes. And attached to the main shop is the recently expanded deli area, which sells delicious Indian sweets (definitely for those with a very sweet tooth!); freshly made Indian curries, bhajis and pakoras to take away; and Mediterranean deli items such as stuffed vine leaves, olives and sundried tomatoes. Don't expect this to come cheap, though - the prices are probably more expensive than bigger supermarkets (but the choice more than makes up for it) Note that the deli doesn't open until later than the main shop (11am on Monday-Saturday and 12 noon on Sundays). read more

I have recently been introduced to a more alternative style of cooking which means using lots of spices that aren't found in supermarkets. Since trying this style of cooking I am now hooked, so I swiftly sought out the nearest spice shop. Bristol Sweet Mart has a large variety of spices, herbs and alternative foods from all around the world. The prices aren't toooo bad but do expect to pay much more than in more popular shops. To really get my senses flowing I like nothing more than spicy, herby, well seasoned meals - and I love to cook them myself - a modern cook in my world kitchen (or so I'd have my friends believe). As much as I enjoy the convenience and selection at Sainsbury's, there was something it just wasn't doing for me - so I went on the lookout for a spicier alternative. What I found was the Sweetmart on St Mark's road in Easton, and so a lifelong affair with flavour began! I slipped in the door and sashayed down the aisles of tumeric, smoked paprika, jerk seasoning - spices from the West Indies, the Far East and South America - I am smitten. There are bog standard (and hence overpriced) alternatives to everyday produce - crisps, tubs of humous, cereals - but the sweets and condiments rock. Stock up on all the vegetables for a Carribbean feast - plantains included (or is that a fruit?) or just enter the shop to inhale all the amazing aroma. The sweet Marts is a varied shop with many world foods which is great and in recent years me and friends used to talk about how nice it was to shop there. Although in recent months i have noticed a distinct arrogance and obnoxiousness on behalf of the people running the store.I think the shops past small popularity must have gone to there heads and they tend to act as if this is the only shop in the world ! I rarely go there now unless i am desperate for somthing as its an uncomfortable experience and i usually leave feeling stressed. I have also experienced staff being manipulative and rude with there sales tactics.. There are other similar shops popping up in the area now which i will happily support instead. read more

Beloved by Bristolians for years, this shop has seen recent expansions in its premises to stock even more of its amazing and exotic cornucopia of ethnic foods, herbs and spices. If a recipe needs an unusual ingredient you can't find elsewhere, the Sweet Mart will surely come to your rescue. It supplies Asian, Middle Eastern, West Indian and now Polish products as well as a huge variety of oils, pulses, rices, halal goods and Indian sweets. I'm so lucky this is my local shop! The Sweet Mart empire seems to grow rapidly and some of this is due to the well earned support they've created in the neighbourhood. For anyone who hasn't been it's worth a trip for the variety of herbs and spices, dried goods such as rice and pulses and good range of fresh foods including bread, cheeses and meats. They also manage to squeeze in a good stock of wholefoods and the entire place is littered with cooking pots big enough to bathe in teetering on high up shelves. My problem is their fruit and veg can be very poor quality and most of their non-Asian goods can be bought at a better price elsewhere. I too have noticed some fairly unfriendly dealings from some of the staff and several years back had them run my debit card twice and then refuse to refund me. I had to get my bank involved to get the money back. This soured me for some time and I refused to shop there. Now I have drifted back due to convenience. A few tweaks in customer service would bring this place up to a 4 star joint. read more

I love this place. I live locally but it's a two hour bus ride away so I only make it up here occasionally, but wow, is it worth it! As soon as you walk through the door your senses are assaulted with the well stocked aisles full of colourful tins, packets, jars, boxes and fresh produce, and oh..the smell, the scent of spices, the waft of the delicatessen!! I cook a lot of Indian food, and this place is just great for big bags of seeds and spices and flours, and you will pay far less than the pathetic little jars you get in a mainstream supermarket. I could spend hours in here, some of the foods you won't recognise at all but some is just your standard vegetarian fare. But they do stock all the Gits mixes, the idli, the dosa, the vada, one can order these online but postage costs bump the price up and a day out in Bristol is always great. I squeezed in Arnos Vale cemetery, then later a glass of wine and a spot of shopping in Cabot Circus. There are also balti dishes, incense, sev makers and henna paste. I love the fact that one can buy foods which have to be imported from India, "Monaco" and "Parle G" biscuits for example, a sweet reminder of my own travels around the subcontinent. The deli is to die for, all weighed and priced up as you go, then you take your receipt to the till with your other groceries and collect your treats, Gujarati samosas, paneer bhaji, and barfi, lovely proper Indian fudge, although alas they had run out of the pistachio one today...I still spent ten quid just at the deli though. Be warned though, it's easy to go in with a budget in mind, and just as easy to leave having spent double, I normally stagger onto the bus with a huge heavy bag or rucksack of treats.
