Roll up, roll up, get all your sweets needs here....Opened last week, this brand new shop on Gloucester Road is a traditional sweet shop. I sense some sort of revival in old skool sweet shops in the air at the moment, two in the space of a few months. Scrumptiously sweet are putting all their efforts into standing out. Being the modern day sweet vendors they are, they've taken into account dietary requirements, so along with the traditional pick'n'mix selection, they also have a range of gluten and sugar free sweets - in my opinion that's quite innovative when it comes to sweets. Along with this, there's also a few chocolates on offer, as well as gift wraps and cards. Although they're doing their best at trying to offer as much as they can, their strength is obviously the sweets and the massive range they stock. This might be an excellent place to pick up a few gifts at this time of year - they offer the option to create your own gift jar out of their stock. It's all pretty cheap as well, which makes the whole place even better. On the occasion I went in it was pretty busy, but the staff looked totally in control of the situation - I expect they'll be consistently busy up to Christmastime. My personal favourite is bon bons; the ones from here had just the right crispier outside coating to chewy inside ratio. I strongly advise the raspberry ones. The only thing missing? My bon bons were served in a plain white paper bag. Surely they should know that the striped pink and white bags are the only way to go!
If you have a sweet tooth, you will be in your element in Scrumptious Sweets. Remember the good old days when Newsagents a-plenty sold colourful arrays of jarred sweets, which sat tantalizingly on the shelves? And under parent law, (if your folks were anything like mine) you were limited to 50 pence worth of your chosen candy per week? Humph. I digress. Anyhow, If this was so, a visit to Scrumptious Sweets will transform you once more into a kiddy in a sweet shop (as the phrase goes), but now (hopefully) you'll be free to buy as many sweets as your heart desires. The selection of jarred sweets is overwhelming, and you will probably not know where to begin with your orders! The shop sells other scrumptious delights such as exquisitely decorated truffles and a range of aesthetically pleasing sugary gifts for the world's sugar lovers.
Stepping into Scrumptiously Sweet is like entering a transporter into a different era. Reminiscent of the 50s, the shop is stocked to the ceiling with jars and jars of colourful sweeties. Remember Popping Candy? Dummy Lollies? Sugar Spacehsips? they are all here and for a very cheap price. One whole side of the shop is dedicated to pick 'n' mix goodies which are onlt £1.35 per kg. They also sell shoelaces which are a metre long! The lady at the counter is very friendly and delights in telling the customers about all the sweets and which ones are best.

Every childs dream! (And of course, every adult who is not afraid to let thier inner child out!) I walked in and my mouth dropped, still possesing my sweet tooth, which I might add I hope I never lose, I was in heaven, all the bon bons under the sun, sugar coated jelly sweats, gobstopper, massive gobstoppes, sugar laces, liquorice alsorts, boiled sweets... oh it was just wonderous! No one in thier right mind can walk into this place and not feel the smile burst onto their face. There is something about sweet shops that just make everything with the world ok. So, if you need a bit of joy in your life visit scrumtiously (not enough shops use this as a name!) sweet and get that inner child buzzing with wonder and excitment about which sugary susbtance will soon be hitting your taste buds and filling you with complete satisfaction! read more
If I'm planning to walk from Gloucester Road to Bristol Temple Meads Station rather than be lazy and jump on the bus, I always make sure I stop by at Scrumptiously Sweet to treat myself for being so healthy. Yes, yes - a contradiction in terms! Just walking through its doors brightens my day. The shop assistants greet you with a warm smile, offers you an array of childhood delights from strawberry laces to chocolate bon bons. With a bag of sweet treats in my pocket, even a long walk in the cold is an attractive proposition! read more

Hurrah, a proper old fashioned sweet shop. It has the range of sugary goodness that you'd expect from such a fantastic establishment, sugary laces, chocolate mice, fizz bombs, fudge and a whole range of sherbet dips. When the lovely assistant could see I was looking for something in particular he asked if he could help. Sadly the sweet of my childhood doesn't seem to exist anymore except in my memory. I'm not going to tell you what it is as together we decided that I should in fact try and create this sweet myself! I may give it a whirl. If it tastes good, I'll be sure to bring a sample to the lovely shop assistant as a thank you. read more

Sweet shops like this always have real resonance for me because they remind me of sweet days when I was a kid. Because my brothers and I had such sweet teeth, my parents tried to keep control of our habit by limiting it to a Tuesday binge when my dad would arrive home from the local sweet shop with his pockets bursting with white paper bags full of everything from fried eggs and popping candy to sherbert dips and lemon bon bons. It didn't work though, now we all in charge of our intake we are hardcore addicts. And my husband is one too. He can eat a bag of Haribo in under five minutes just by ploughing through. And thus I have resisted going into this marvellous shop for so long because I knew I would get hooked. However, after being a bit mean to my hubby the other day, I decided to stop in and treat him with a big sack of pic and mix. I was expecting it to be like the cinema where you almost have to remortgage your house when the dreaded weigh-in comes around but I was pleasantly surprised at the cost. The pic and mix selection is great, with all the old faves from milk bottles and white chocolate mice to teeth and even beer bottles. But there's also shelf upon shelf of childhood sweets you can buy by weight and all the old favourites are there. The shop also offers a wedding favours service and retro stuff for party bags. And there are gluten, salt and sugar free alternatives as well as boxes of handmade Belgian chocolates. It's bloody marvellous. You'll have to place a restraining order on me to keep me away! read more
